Donald Trump has already spent $1.75 million redecorating the White House

This morning, I was reading this story about how Republicans are going to argue that Robert Mueller’s investigation should be defunded soon, because they’re worried about taxpayer money all of a sudden. I would believe it except it’s clear that Donald Trump, his administration and the Republican party are trying to loot the country for everything, and that they don’t give a sh-t about taxpayer money. Between the expensive private planes being used for personal trips to the ridiculous amount of Secret Service protection being extended to the Trump family and their cronies, don’t even talk to me about wasting taxpayer funds. It’s especially egregious when Donald and Melania have apparently been spending money hand over fist to redecorate the (All)White House in their tacky-ass image:

Donald Trump has spent $1.75 million in 9 months of living in the White House, NBC reported. According to government records, some of the costs accrued include $17,000 for custom rugs, $7,000 for furniture pedestals, $5,000 for wallpaper, and $12,800 for a custom conference table made by the same company that once built a table for former President Richard Nixon — although the company’s website notes that “Nixon paid for the table himself.”

While the records don’t detail specifically which rooms the funds were spent on, NBC points out that some of the redecorations seem like they could be for Trump’s residential mansion.

The hefty sum isn’t markedly larger than the amount spent by previous presidents. By comparison, NBC reports that Barack Obama spent $1.5 million on redecorating over a similar period of time. Though they note Obama made a point of paying for some of the costs out of his own pocket. A spokesperson for Trump has yet to comment on whether the current president has done the same. The West Wing also underwent renovations this summer.

In August, Trump created controversy after reportedly telling a group of members at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf course that the reason he visited the club so often was because “that White House is a real dump,” according to Golf.com.

A White House spokesperson later said the statement was false and Trump denied the accusation on Twitter writing, “I love the White House, one of the most beautiful buildings (homes) I have ever seen. But Fake News said I called it a dump – TOTALLY UNTRUE.”

[From People]

There were like a dozen people who went on the record saying that they heard Trump call the White House a “dump.” He even lies about that. And how much is Trump spending out of pocket for the decorations? My guess: nada, nothing, zilch. Previous first ladies fundraised and used private funds to help with the upkeep and decorating and renovating for the White House. Laura Bush did a major decorating project in her husband’s second term too. My guess is that Trump wanted to redecorate EVERYTHING because he can’t stand living in a house that was previously lived-in by the Obamas. Plus, Trump is tacky, so he wants everything to be gold-plated and gaudy. The White House interior probably looks like an Atlantic City casino now.

If Mueller’s investigation is defunded, I will happily donate to a GoFundMe.

    No gold plated toilets yet?

    • Juls says:

Bigly’s tombstone will read: “Elvis, my toilet was made out of GOLD, loser!”

      • Beth says:

Trumps last meal on the bathroom golden throne will be a greasy bucket of KFC and beautiful chocolate cake instead of pork chops like Elvis had

I thought he’d go for marble, gaudy gold fixtures, and waterfall features on the walls, like that horribly decadent and dated look in Trump Tower in NYC. Money does not buy class, Donald, Jesus.

    Poor white house.

Somehow, I doubt any attention or care has been paid to preservation. He fired the Chief Usher months ago to bring in his own person. Rumors are that she had raised concerns about some of the changes he was making were not in keeping with the character of the building.

American taxpayers have spent $1.75 million on the White House “redecorations” because a classless, arrogant, small dick with bad taste needs his ego stroked.

    There. Fixed it for you.

Every presidential couple since the Kennedys has made over the decor of the white house. Usually the private rooms, a couple of state rooms and the Oval office. The money comes from a fund named White Jouse Historical Association.

Some renovations are horrendous and others were lovely.

They tend to use a mixture of furnishings already present, decoratively significant artwork from Museums and commission new pieces.

Personally, i feel the Oval office make over is wasteful because it’s re-made several times by each president. That rug in the centre has been rumoured to cost as much as $100,000 due to the fact that it is a bespoke commission. And it’s rarely re-used by other presidents. I think only George W re-used a previously commissioned rug for one of his renovations.

My favourite personal space is the Obama renovations, though i disliked the decor for his Oval office except for the central rug.

Trump’s office was made over with curtains from the Clinton presidency and rug from the George W presidency. It’s funny that he managed to find yellow/ gold accents in the white house storage to make the office resemble Trump tower.

Cote de Texas blog has several lovely posts about all the white house renovations through several presidencies starting with Roosevelt. https://cotedetexas.blogspot.co.uk/2016/11/finally_8.html

It’s quite clear that regardless of public protestations of the various presidents using their own money for a few items, the starting point for all these renovations is ‘money no object’ regardless of the fact that it’s donations / nonprofit organisations picking the tab. They all spend like lottery winners, and each is determined to make it over in their image.

I’m pretty sure everyone posting knows that each administration does redecorating. Most adhere to some historical, aesthetic mandate in their efforts. trump knows nothing but ‘dictator chic.’ The WH is our house. We pay for it and don’t want trump’s nasty, tacky taste polluting it.

      • LAK says:

        It is what it is.

They’ve all redecorated according to their taste which was successful in some tenures and unsuccessful in others. All spent ridiculous sums.

As for historic aesthetic, i beg to differ since they have all been very different styles since Truman. Only Jackie tried to use the classic architecture of the place as her guide in her design projects.

And as for history, let’s not forget that Truman had to rebuild the entire house after he found it a neglected, rotting dump full of Victoriana decor. It’s not as old as you think nor is it the original design before Truman.

Will Trump give us dictator chic, may be he will, and may be he won’t. He’s already tried it with the Oval office, and i remain amused that he used the Clinton curtains and the W rug to do it.

      • Jerusha says:

After the trumps are expunged I’ll be fine if the whole place is gutted. I don’t know how their stench will be removed otherwise. If you’re paying for any of this I’ll respect your opinion, otherwise, no.

      • LAK says:

I understand your point with your first 2 sentences, but i’m confused by this, “If you’re paying for any of this I’ll respect your opinion, otherwise, no.”

        What does this mean?

      • Jerusha says:

I apologize for my bad mood this morning. I am just fed to the teeth with all things trump and his enablers. You’re British, are ypu not? I was just saying that since I never comment on the BRF’s cost to the British taxpayer since it doesn’t affect me, I got a little testy about anyone not being taken to the cleaners commenting even slightly favorably about their latest expenditure. No problem with anyone anywhere in the world commenting on issues affecting everyone, e.g., NK, climate change, ISIS, etc. once again, sorry for my snotty mood, but I hate trump with every fiber of my being.

    • kibbles says:

I realize that this will never change, but it’s such a waste of money regardless of who is the president at the time. I lived in an apartment for three years and didn’t even drill a nail in the wall because I knew the place wasn’t mine and that my stay would not be permanent. Being president should be a considered a public service. They should not even receive that high of a salary let alone millions to waste on decorating a place they won’t even spend more than eight years in, some only four years.

  7. Bijou says:

Of course they are worried about spending too much of THEIR money- I mean, tax payer dollars…so they can gold gilt everything in the WH and tacky it the fuck up.

  8. robyn says:

Trump has hideous taste. However, the WH probably needs some upgrades so this is likely the least of anyone’s worries. All I can say is Mueller better hurry up and reveal some impeachable goods on Trump or Trump will make sure Mueller lands in jail before he does.

The Trump Russia investigation in the House, Senate, and Senate Judiciary are officially over. The GOP senators on 2 of those committees have hijacked the investigation and are turning it into an investigation into Hillary, Obama, and Uranium. Mueller needs to start investigating Chuck G and Nunes for obstruction of justice. To help Nunes and Chuck G in their investigation against Hillary and the fake uranium story that had already been debunked, the Dotard pressured the DOJ into lifting a gag order on an FBI informant who claims to have information about the fake Hillary story. The press needs to start asking what do the Russians have on Chuck G and Nunes to make them act like this.

    1) reading this and the story of Dolly Parton’s mom sewing her toes back on herself in the same day hurts my heart (yes, Parton’s story is old but there are children in the US today living in that same poverty)?
    2) what the hell is a furniture pedestal and why does it cost so much? I’m so poor (by comparison) I thought a pedestal WAS furniture!

  14. Aimena says:

Y’all, I’m trying not to get too excited, but did you see this?

The place could use a fumigator to clear out some of that entrenched Trump stench.
