Will Smith parodies son Jaden’s music video, Icon, in honor of 100 million streams

Dad humor is having a renaissance of sorts. Sterling K. Brown’s This is Us character Randall is a master of the Dad joke and you don’t have to go far on the internet to find a Twitter feed or Buzzfeed article packed with groan-worthy paternal humor. So, it’s probably no surprise that Will Smith, who has long had a reputation as a funny guy, has gone from being the Fresh Prince to the King of Dad Humor, some of which comes at the expense of his son, Jaden.

Proud Papa Will thought up a special way to congratulate his 19-year-old son for the success of his latest album, Syre, which has reached 100 million Spotify streams. The 49-year-old singer/rapper/actor took to Instagram on Tuesday to share his humorous take on Jaden’s video “Icon”. Donning a grill, oodles of chains and a Dad-appropriate slippers and white socks combo, Will recreated a few scenes from the video, and congratulated Jaden for the Spotify milestone, declaring, “I’m proud of you man. 100 million streams. Congrats! I love you.” In the accompanying caption, he added, “It is a Delicious Gift to a Parent to Admire his children. Keep Doin’ You!”

Will’s video has amassed over 4.5 million hits, but he’s got a way to go to catch up to the almost 44 million views of Jaden’s video. Fortunately, Jaden shares his Dad’s sense of humor and posted a comment on the video, calling it “the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life” and calling him “the best father anyone could ask for.”

I love a good Dad joke, and Will seems to have an endless supply. He loves joking with Jaden, cutting off and then donning his dreads. He also made sure to take some time out of his day to show off the hideous Christmas sweater he received from his wife Jada. Will’s YouTube channel, currently featuring vlogs he’s made while promoting Bright, is full of jokes and cutting up, and, hell, the first five minutes I watched was better than all of that Netflix flick.

I love Will. I have such a soft spot for him. Honestly, after watching both Will and Jaden’s versions of Icon, Will’s is better, even though his is satire. I love the white socks and slippers lmao! I’m stunned how Icon got 100,000,000 plays. It’s a terrible song. Also, I can’t with Jaden’s faux intellectual, pampered rich kid self.

    • NameChange says:

Even Jaden’s response was cringey. His writing shows his lack of schooling.

How? It’s an Instagram comment not a PhD thesis. Some people here really think their sh*t don’t stink and it’s hilarious. Love Will and the song is great.

      • NameChange says:

You don’t have to have a PhD to know the difference between “to” and “too” and throw in a period or comma. Feel free to stan for him if you want to; the rest of us don’t have to.

eh i don’t have other samples of his writing to compare it to but i once got an unexpected check in the mail from my parents when i was REALLY struggling and sent my dad a similarly effusive text. i love will smith so obvi a little biased here

Yeah. I’d say, “Poor Jaden. Living in shadows of awesomeness must have sucked giant turds,” but nah. Jaden is his own problem. Kudos to a great dad.

  3. Hm says:

Will is too funny and jaden is slightly less annoying than he was a few years ago.

  4. Sullivan says:

    That was cute.

I’m glad Jaden took it well. If he hadn’t it’d be kind of awful for Will to have done. Because honestly – these kids are his responsibility. He didn’t seem to have them focus on actual education, and I question how much they were left to their own devices growing up. I’m not saying they’re bad kids at all – but there’s a good deal of the cringe factor that comes from the way Will and Jada parented them, so it’d be kind of dumb for them to mock them.

    • jwoolman says:

Many missed opportunities, but at least they all seem to genuinely like each other. The kids seem kind to others.

lol, at these spicy comments. I had no idea Icon was by Jaden Smith. All the youths around me play it ad nauseam. It’s a hype song. I like it and I like the Smiths.

    His instagram is pure gold.
