Blake Lively jokes that she’s her own stylist because of ‘control issues & a big ego’

Blake Lively Departs GMA

Did you know Blake Lively doesn’t have a stylist?!?!?! This is the biggest breaking news since “Friends costars Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox are friends in real life!” One of Blake Lively’s biggest claims to fashion-fame is that she doesn’t have a stylist, that she talks to designers directly, that she has developed her own fashion eye, and that she really enjoys styling herself. It’s her “thing.” Now, do you believe that? I believe she doesn’t technically have one stylist working for her. But I believe she works with stylists who work for particular designers or design houses all the time. Still, there is a distinction, so whatever. In any case, Blake Lively gave an interview to Women’s Wear Daily about how she’s her own stylist. You can read the piece here. Some highlights:

Acting as her own stylist: “It’s a lot of work – I mean, it’s not hard in that we all dress ourselves every morning. So once you have the clothes, you just pick out what to wear like any other human being does. But it’s easier because you have access to clothes and so it’s not that hard. The hard part is going through all the fashion shows and screenshotting all the looks you like and calling them in. I have an assistant who helps in calling in the looks. But a lot of it is I have relationships with the designers.”

This year’s Met Gala look is already in the works: “I just sent Lorraine Schwartz and Christian Louboutin my dress, and said, ‘Ok let’s do something special.’ They’re making something custom for it. So it’s kind of nice, because I have a bunch of artists around me who I have direct relationships with. It’s sort of a group effort with that. I rely on people who do that for a living rather than outsourcing it to someone else.”

She does it because she has control issues: “Probably because I have control issues and a big ego – that’s probably the honest answer. I just like it. I love design and I love fashion and it’s a way to be creative. In my job I get to be creative, but it’s over a period of time and so many other people are involved, whereas this is a beginning, middle and end, and I get to be creative and there’s an end date in the near future. It’s the same reason why I like doing my friends’ hair and makeup or cooking – you get to be creative and finish it. Whereas with my job you do it and then two years later it’s finished. It probably goes back to the control issues; it’s like, ‘Ok I did it, I completed it, it’s done!’”

I think if you’re one of those women who enjoy fashion and styling and makeup, then you probably should act as your own stylist. It does seem like fun, especially if you have those designer connections and you can just call up Michael Kors and ask him to make something for you. The thing is, all I can think about is how time-consuming it must be, especially for any given actress who has to attend dozens of red carpets a year. Don’t you get sort of burnt out on it? Doesn’t it become un-fun at some point?

There is no way i would ever let someone else style me. I’m very picky about what I feel looks good on me, nobody else EVER gets it right, and I’ve gotten many compliments on what i wear. Know all those “horrible looks” on the red carpet? Stylists!

  2. Georgia says:

Well, it’S not like Blake has the busiest of scheludes, you know. I think she has the time for it, and she seems to enjoy all aspects of it, either choosing the dresses and cultivating relationships with fashion designers.

  3. Krill says:

She is either lying or she has too much time on her hands. Neither is a good look.

Aside from tracking all the new couture of the season, she also has to be logging what other high profile actresses have worn recently to avoid replicating someone else moment. She may not call whoever catalogues this stuff for her “my stylist” but that person is doing the real grunt work while she soaks up this pointless glory. Because really, who da f-k cares that you have a stylist or dont??

    • Miles says:

She says in the interview that she has an assistant track everything. And says she has a great relationship with the fashion designers which if you notice she tends to wear a lot of the same designers. It’s not as “hard” as you think it is.

    • Jussie says:

It’s really not that hard. For starters, the designers staff know who’s worn what and what’s set aside for who. A stylist can keep track as well, make sure no errors are made, but it’s not really necessary. For big events the designers staff absolutely know who can wear what, and for the smaller stuff it’s not a disaster if someone repeats a look anyway.

It’s also not hard to keep track of collections. I do it as part of my job, and it probably takes up 5-10 hours a month. That’s taking note of every single notable designers every collection. Blake has a handful of favourites she mostly wears, and there’s a ton of designers who don’t fit her style at all, so really all she has to pay attention to is maybe 20 designers. That’s not time consuming.

The main thing a stylist brings to the table for celebrities who already follow fashion and are confident putting outfits together is connections. Someone like Zendaya for example never would have connected with so many designers years ago when she was just a former Disney star without Law Roach. Blake however made a ton of connections due to Gossip Girl and the It Girl status that brought her. So she doesn’t need any assistance there.

It’s cute that she thinks anyone cares.

    • Lee says:

      Lol! This!
Also, I don’t like her ‘style’, she always has too much going on, too many jewels, accessories and stuff.

    • Gabbygirl2 says:

Ha ha ha ha 😂, thanks for the comment. It’s exactly what I was thinking!

    • Miles says:

And yet here you are commenting on an article that you supposedly don’t care about.

      • minx says:

Yes, because that’s what we do here.

      • Jegede says:

        @Miles –

LOL. Isn’t that how it always is?

I read on some Jen Aniston post with someone going at Aniston questioning how someone so ‘basic’, ‘boring’ could have fans, without appreciating that since she’s so ‘bland’ and ‘boring’ e.t.c she shouldn’t have dedicated haters either.

The opposite of love is not hate – that also requires emotions – it’s indifference.

      • minx says:

Jegede–“haters” is a strong word for someone who critiques Jennifer Aniston or Blake Lively or really anyone. CB is a gossip site not a fan site. You’re allowed to weigh in.

  5. Tess says:

Look, she’s simple. I mean that as an insult in that she seems like a relatively clueless and stupid person. She’s also not really in demand for anything movie wise. Let’s not lie, she has time to do all this because she’s just not talented enough to be too busy to do it. Let her have this.

    • Sequinedheart says:

Agreed. She’s not exactly burning up the ratings in oscar-worthy films. So she has her own style, I applaud her for it. I hate shopping and I dread picking out outfits, but I love clothes. Conundrum!
I appreciate that she knows having access to these people is a big chunk of the reason she can get away with styling herself.
She is not my favorite person but I think her instagram is funny because she is self-depreciating.

      • a says:

This. There’s nothing…wrong with her, but she’s not interesting. I’m surprised that Reynolds is with her since his first two fiancées were less conventional (Alanis and Scarlett – the former more so than the latter, but still). I know some people find him irritating but he seems like a smart guy and has good comedic skills.

    • Mei says:

Is it really that badly you’re affected by her ability and choice of career that you have to sound so cruel? Blimey, no wonder people always think women cannot support other women…

  6. Jayna says:

Well, considering how fug or boring many outfits picked out by stylists for celebs are, I don’t blame her. I am often unimpressed by what celebs have on when on the red carpet and they usually have stylists.

  7. Miles says:

I would rather dress myself and look fugly than pay someone to style me and I still end up looking fugly. So yea I’d probably do the same if I was her.

  8. NeoCleo says:

The point here being that she’s really not ALL that busy.

  9. BB90 says:

    She just seems so bland!

  10. Veronica says:

Oh girl, I saw some of your early fashion. You didn’t have to tell me a stylist wasn’t involved. It’s gotten much better, but the bar was set very low after you walked a red carpet in a blue satin dress two sizes too small.

    • monette says:

Soo true! Did u know the girls at GoFugYourself called her Boobs Legsly for years because she would always brake the “show boobs or legs” rule? She would always do both.

  11. liriel says:

Does she have a good PR team because she’s everywhere yet she doesn’t really have much if anything to promote. She’s pretty (but not as gorgeous as everyones makes her out to be. I know, different taste etc but she’s not some beauty not see previously on earth) and she gets almost as much attention as let’s say Jlaw who might be annoying but is the “it girl”. Anyone?

  12. Bridget says:

She gets sent complete looks, so she’s not mixing and matching and putting things together. She’s wearing stuff directly how the designer wants it. So it’s basically just fancy catalogue shopping. I get it, that would be fun, especially when you have an assistant to do all the boring grunt work. But then you listen to someone like Law Roach, and the strategy and thought behind how he dresses Zendaya – it’s not even close to the same thing.

  13. Macko says:

To be honest, I like her. And I like her and Ryan as a couple. She is not a good actress by any standards, but she has a great style. She has an amazing body and she know how to dress it. I always enjoy her on a red carpet. I think she is entertaining
