Mena Suvari could have been more of a star. I still remember her breakout role in American Beauty as it’s one of my favorites and I just rewatched it last year. She never really hit it big, but was in a few romcoms and comedies and has been working steadily in television. I guess we can say the same for her costar, Thora Birch.
Mena, now 39 and looking about 10 years younger, was at an H&M conscious collection event, where she spoke to US Weekly. She talked about her newfound commitment to veganism, she’s been a vegan for 10 months, and how she’s gone all out with it including in her choice of clothing, beauty products and overall lifestyle. She says she’s not preachy about it although it sounds like she did a total overhaul on her life.
On her all-vegan lifestyle
I’ve been vegan for almost 10 months now and I went completely cruelty-free in my life even with my beauty products and my whole wardrobe. I feel really good making the personal changes that I did and I’ve always loved fashion, so I wanted to make it a point, for whatever it’s worth, and show people that you can have fun with sustainable fashion and that it’s possible. You’re doing a good thing for the environment, you’re doing a good thing for animals and you’re saving a lot of money. I love being able to feel good in what I’m wearing! She doesn’t fault other people for not doing it
Going vegan and cruelty-free is my personal choice and I don’t harp on anyone for doing it differently. I know people in different stages of going vegan and cruelty-free and, whatever, but I believe that everything is energy and it all ties into your whole vibe. It’s nice to see companies coming out more and I think it’s a beautiful thing. I hope people tap into the right reasons of why they’re doing it, but regardless, they’re doing it. And if it’s because they think it’s a trend, they’re still doing it and it’s good. I think we’re creating a bigger consciousness.
Some people are like this, they’ll go all out when they commit to something. I’m the kind of person that does things gradually and in degrees. I’m reading Gretchen Rubin’s Better Than Before, in which she breaks down the ways we can adopt new habits. (I also love her podcast, Happier, with her sister.) She says that it’s dependant on our personalities and what works for us. Some people can change everything all at once but I’m the type of person who needs to wade in to make a change. Mena sounds like one of those all or nothing people but at least she’s not telling us that we need to give up all our animal products too. I like that she sounds so live and let live about it. I have a “friend” who is an all or nothing animal lover and vegan who assumes everyone else is like that and can do it like she does. She’ll even comment “gross” on photos mutual friends share of their meat dishes. I can only take her in small doses.
Mena donated her Lip Sync Battle charity money to landscape a local high school, and she went and helped them with it!
Mena has been working with Vista Del Mar for a while.

This is terrible of me but I just spent 10 minutes googling as I thought Mena Suvari and Mira Sorvino were the same person and that you got Mira’s name mixed up/misspelled here. I had no idea they were 2 separate people and now I have to go re-evaluate my life.
I have empathy for that- I didn’t know until a few years ago that Eric Bana and Christian Bale were different people. Even now when I see either of them I’m like ‘it’s that guy. no, wait, there’s two guys. it’s one of that guy.’
I always confuse them too! Their names are just too similar.
I thought Natalie Portman and Kiera Knightly were the same person for YEARS.
Mena has such a special kind of beauty, I love seeing her.
Celebitchy, if I had a friend commenting “gross” on people’s photos of their meals I wouldn’t be able to take her in ANY dose. You must have a more forgiving and patient heart than me! That’s so unacceptable to me.
As a staunch vegetarian, I have to agree! To each their own. If a friend posts a photo of a steak, I am never going to comment negatively! Good for you, not for me.
My friend from high school became vegan, and militantly refused to eat around others eating meat, and began shaming us, but especially her family. It was kind of scary.
in Tibet, where they sift through soil before building so they don’t kill worms or other animals, or Jains who sweep the ground before them for insects, they still eat dairy, with the rationale being that it is better to make use of products from one animal soul like a yak, than say, a dozen shrimp souls.
I have been guilty of black and white thinking, but the ethos of using dairy from yaks and eating them at the end of a long life instead as in Tibet makes sense to me?
I just don’t understand how cow milk is worse than almond and coconut milk and quinoa which require plane transport, use lots of water (almonds), or hurt indigenous populations that have been relying on the food for generations (quinoa, coconut) but cannot afford it now to meet western demand.
In my opinion, eating local, growing a garden, working within my communy food bank to ensure food doesn’t go to waste, taking short showers are steps I try to live cruelty free! But to each their own. I know we are all doing the best we can and this isn’t the competition environmental and food justice Olympics.
Cow milk from the family cow is not worse. Factory milk is very abusive, however.
Mena seems like a kind hearted person.
I always wondered why her career never took off like it looked like it was going to.
She wasn’t beautiful enough to make it big, she’s pretty but doesn’t look like a movie star.
She was really beautiful when she came out and had lots of back to back projects. Also, a lot of less beautiful actresses made it further than her
@Rose Really?… I thought and still do think that she’s really beautiful, uniquely beautiful and I thought she was a great actress. Well, at least when I was younger and about her age when I watched American Beauty (we’re close in real age, I think her character was younger in that role). Anyway, I can’t even rewatch that film as an adulty to see if I really liked it because of Spacey. Goddammit! Every friggin’ movie is wrecked because of either a problematic white male, some sort of sexual or other abuse, and or a connection or excuse for said behaviour by those in it. I can’t even watch anything with Kate Winslet anymore because she’s such a bloody tool!
Lots of weird rumours about her, though God knows if they were legit. Possibly a Weinstein situation where she turned down the wrong person and was thus subjected to a whisper campaign?
I feel like there were several careers thrown off by Wienstien. She could possibly be a candidate for this.
Honestly? Probably a #MeToo situation in which she wouldn’t go along with what was being asked of her. Good for her, if true.
She probably got weinstiened.
She could benefit from some bangs.
Why? She has the most beautiful, elegant, regal forehead.
If you have a movie projector and lost the screen.
The only #planting she did was posing for the photo.
I’m just curious: how do you know this?
Aside from all of her and her equipment being clean and untouched by ground, she isn’t dressed for gardening. Her dressy shoes (that look like they have a heel too!) will get dirt inside them and give her blisters, no socks, pant leg too short and untucked, high waisted tight jeans that will not let her kneel on the ground and move comfortably, wrong size gloves she is modeling (she is the only one given a pair of gloves and she isn’t even using them!) etc. Have you ever dug ground? It does not work like this lol.
It was only two trees, hardly enough for her to get dirty. I doubt she dug the hole but I can believe she was there to sift the ground around and help put the tree into the hole, that’s not exactly taxing work.
I was on a plane with her twice – she is so so beautiful. And she said my baby was cute, so I liked her even more!
She seems like such a nice person.
I went cruelty-free with all my products, too. It’s hard at first, because you don’t know which brands to buy, but once you figure out who is and isn’t cruelty-free, it’s easy. Even laundry detergent, toothpaste, makeup, shampoo, deodorant, everything.
I don’t see the point of buying things that were tested on animals. Animal testing is unnecessary.
I went cruelty free a few years ago. Can’t see myself ever going back. So many companies are expanding their products to not only be cruelty free but vegan also. It’s amazing!
She has the best ass in Hollywood. Just google it. She should have had a breakout role just for that alone.
I’m sure Mena means well, but why is it that “cruelty free” only seems to involve animals and not fellow human beings? H&M has been busted more than once for using sweatshops, and if we want to start thinking about cruelty we don’t have to look further than any of our touchscreen devices, the mining conditions for the minerals needed are horrendous, with many reports of child labour and abuse.
I’m not trying to throw stones here, I live in a glass house and unfortunately it can be phenomenally expensive to buy products that don’t use underpaid/forced labour somewhere along the production line. I just wonder why the idea of “cruelty free” doesn’t include people.
I love the idea of going cruelty free. It’s really hard with clothing and shoes, but there are more vegan options out there all the time and ecommerce is your friend.
