Queer Eye guys have advice on self care, affordable style & getting over a breakup

Looks like I’m canceling my plans for the weekend, as Netflix is releasing the complete, eight-episode second season of Queer Eye on Friday. The reboot of the popular show that ran from 2003 to 2007 debuted in February and was a huge success, thanks to the “Fab Five,” Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, Bobby Berk and my beloved Jonathan Van Ness. The show, originally titled Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is still in my hometown of Atlanta and is introducing its first female and trans “heroes” this season. Check out the trailer and try to maintain a dry eye. I dare you.

The guys, sans Jonathan (the “fine four”?) chatted with Buzzfeed in advance of the season and offered valuable advice to fans. Pretty solid stuff.

Karamo on self-care:
It’s not as hard as you actually think. A lot of moments in life, especially during your lunch breaks, we find ourselves doing the same mediocre things. But actually what you need to be doing is exploring the world around you. Instead of sitting at your desk or the cafeteria eating, go out eating in the park, go to a museum and eat your lunch in the museum. That way you’re taking time for yourself, you’re actually exploring the world, and you’ll feel better.

Tan on updating your style on a budget:
You can go to a thrift store, and keep it really limited. Go with a plan in mind, figure out what is appropriate for your wardrobe based on your style. We have loads of wicked vintage stores in England. You can find stuff that is so unique, that you’re not going to find anywhere else. Go for stores like that.

The guys on getting over a breakup:
Antoni: You can start off by making a big fat mac and cheese. Just having a little moment with yourself, light a candle, watch a show you really like. Let yourself wallow and go through the emotions. It is important to check in with friends as well, so that you don’t stay lonely and have your bestie come over with a pint of nice ice cream or your favorite dessert. If you gotta get a little drunk, go ahead and do a little bit of that. Whatever your process is, but try to keep it within the bounds of some semblance of normalcy. Or buy a puppy – a puppy would cheer anybody up! That’s all I got, guys.

Bobby: After you wallow like that, use that time you would have spent with that significant other to do a bit of self-care. Reflect on yourself and do things that make you happy and not worry about them.

Karamo: I’m always good for a list. After a breakup, I like to write down the parts of my self-esteem that were affected by that breakup. Because sometimes the issues we have in our minds get bigger and bigger if we don’t address them. And sometimes just putting them on paper and seeing that this person actually broke you down because of your body can help you remember that you need to focus on loving your body so that it doesn’t become a bigger issue. You can see what exactly you need to focus on.

Karamo on moving on after rejection:
Unrequited love is something that we have all experienced at some point in our lives, whether you are young or you are older. You have to check in with yourself, which is a big thing we teach throughout Queer Eye: that their rejection is not about you, it is about them. And that’s easier said than done.

I’d like to give physical manifestations of representations of what is great about yourself, and I think writing those things down that you can post on your mirror in the bathroom, so as you’re brushing your teeth, you can say: “This is what I love about myself.” Because the rejection you felt from that person, that unrequited love, is really love that you should be showing yourself. So, if you can remind yourself of that love daily, you’ll be OK.

[From Buzzfeed]

The guys recently dished about season two with Entertainment Tonight. Karamo said that “The thing that we’re most excited about [in season two] is the diversity.” Jonathan added, “It just gives us a chance to go a little deeper. You got a chance to know the five of us, and the [season two] stories just get a little more into our lives as well.” Tan probably summed it up best, telling ET, “As far as I’m concerned, I’ve never seen this on TV before. What we’re doing in season two, I’ve never seen it on TV before. You’re just going to have to wait and see. I promise you it’s so worth tuning in.” I’m already sold. I cried during the trailer. I need more of these guys and I can’t wait until Friday.

I clicked on the video thinking, “Nah, I’m a tough person, nothing makes me cry” and it made me teary. I love this show being a beacon of light for the sh*tshow the country is in right now.

Agreed! This show and these guys are a bright shinging beacon of hope here in the dark timeline. I love them all SO MUCH – they are all genuinely good humans. And I would highly recommend following the guys on instagram. Karamo posts self-love advice and videos regularly and every time I see one it just hits me right in the feels. They also have a real funny rapport – they comment on each other’s timelines and you can tell how much they adore each other.

Thank you netflix for bringing these gentlemen into our lives. MUCH NEEDED.

Bless..this just makes me soo happy, there is nothing snarky or bad to say. They are the sweetest and I love ’em to bits!

  3. Mariposa says:

What were they doing in Australia? Are they filming some shows there? (I heard they were in Yass, where I was born!) Dealing with the guys in OZ would be a good challenge!!

The young transgender guy looked great at the end!

    • Ange says:

So family members of mine live in Yass and the guys randomly (well as randomly as you can for a press tour) popped in there the other day because… YASS KWEEN! Hahaha. The mayor presented them with crowns and then they went on their way. My family member works for the local council and got to be there, I was so jealous I could have died. The rest I’m assuming was just a bit of promo for the series.

Fun Fact: I went to CEGEP (quebec post high school/pre university college) with Antoni. He was good buddies with two of my friends. I didn’t hang out with him much because we were in different programs, but he was a beautiful man even at 19. Also, I love the new queer eye so much

    • VirgiliaCoriolanus says:

I follow Antoni on IG just because of the underwear pictures he posts. He is like the kind of hotness that sneaks up on you. It took me a minute to realize he was ridiculously good looking.

  5. Slowsnow says:

Are you kidding?! I cried in every episode of the show – and so did my husband.
    Not clicking on that trailer!
So looking forward to season 2.

I just lost the best opportunity of my professional career up until now and I really really need the Fab Five to remind myself that despite my bad decisions I’m still worthy of love.
Here’s to hoping for a brighter morning.

    • Slowsnow says:

@LuckyZeGrand, when I had my daughter I told her paediatrician that I was worried about my career. She replied that some things you’ll never live again (like my daughter’s first years) but career opportunities come and go.
I don’t know what happened to you but I hold on to this because it has proved to be right in my life, 18 years later.
I hope this makes sense and please accept a strong internet hug!

    • Snowflake says:

Sometimes when one door closes, another one opens. And you end up better off Hang in there hon.

      • LuckyZeGrand says:

Thank you,you guys. When you make the wrong choice all the worst thoughts you have about yourself come to surface and self-love is hard.Especially if you are a workaholic whose identity is 90% tied to your job.
Thank God for angels online and tv shows with actual rays of sunshine like the Fab Five who can help us heal.
A steel door may have closed but there are cracks everywhere right?

I LIVE for Jonathan Van Ness. He makes me so damn happy!! They all do though, TBH. I just adore this show and all these wonderful men!

  10. Cee says:

I love this show! I’m not old enough to remember QEFTSG but I am aware of the cultural impact it had. I absolutely adore Jonathan and Karamo, I need to spend an hour with them just talking because they seem so nice and insightful.

I particularly enjoy Karamo’s advice on things – he gives a good pep talk without being condescending or minimizing the other person’s issues/feelings.

My weekend plans are cancelled (except for Argentina Vs Iceland)!

    • Slowsnow says:

Oh man exactly. Roland Garros is over but there is football / soccer and Queer Eye. Dream week-end.

  11. Yup says:

Girl, I cried in every episode of the first season!!! This show is so moving, I actually think it’s better than the original.

  13. ASHBY says:

    Lovely people.

This is what we need in this world, a lot more of.

More kindness, more acceptance, more love, respect for one another and integrity.
