GLOW’s Kate Nash: ‘As a woman, being told to take up space is really rare’

Season two of GLOW premieres June 29, and I am so excited to get back into the ring. While Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin get most oft he press, the other actresses on the show are pretty amazing. Take, for example, Kate Nash, who plays Rhonda “Britannica” Richardson on the show.

In addition to acting, 31-year-old Kate is also a singer, songwriter and musician. After attending a performing arts high school, she pursued a career in music. In 2005, she started uploading songs to MySpace (remember that?) and had her first hit in the UK with the song “Foundations” in 2007. She’s released four albums and won the award for Best British Female Artist at the 2008 Brit Awards. In 2015, Kate was cast in a pilot for GLOW executive producer Jenji Kohan called The Devil You Know, which dealt with the Salem witch trials. In a interview for the Radio Times, Kate was excited about the show and her role, where, as she jokingly put it, “I was in the woods, shoving sticks up women’s vaginas.” The show didn’t get picked up, but Jenji liked Kate’s work on the pilot and that’s how she ended up on GLOW.

Kate was interviewed on Friday’s Radcliffe and Maconie show on BBC Radio and talked more about her music and her role on GLOW. It’s a great interview (Kate’s part starts around the 1:37:00 mark), and here are some highlights:

On getting hurt learning wrestling
I’m not going to say that we haven’t been hurt…a lot of bruising, it’s just learning how to get hurt the right way.

On how GLOW and learning wrestling has been life-changing
I love it, it’s been life-changing. As a woman, being told to take up space is really rare. I’m not on screen worrying about how I look, I’m worried about how my wrestling looks. [We] criticize ourselves so much and there’s so much pressure on us to look a certain way. To be surrounded by women that are all diverse and we’re more worried about our matches and how we want to look as wrestlers.

Kate is finding wrestling as rewarding as music, telling Pop Matters:

Being a wrestler has made me a better performance and being a performer helped me be a wrestler, the two feed each other. I love wrestling, live performance is so empowering, doing it with other women is so empowering. You get such a rush from it, I’m really grateful for being able to do this.

Kate’s a cool lady. I had never heard her music before, but I kind of dig it, like the song “Drink About You” that’s embedded below. I’m really hoping that season two of GLOW will give us more time with Kate’s character as well as some of the other supporting characters, especially Shelia the She Wolf. I can’t wait to binge this one.

I was fan as a teenager, (10 plus years ago)- “Foundations” is her best and most well known song. It sounds like her music is still very teenage which is obviously just her sound. Good for her for getting Glow.

  2. Lucy says:

I love her music. “Kiss that grrl” and “take me to a higher plane” are two of my fav songs. I didn’t know she acted too! I’ll have to finally watch Glow.

  3. Claudia says:

I’ve never watched Glow but I love her music. “Made of Bricks” and especially her second album “My best friend is you” – she’s a great lyric writer!

OMG, I LOVE me some Kate Nash, been a fan since the Myspace days. I saw her in concert with a friend for my birthday this year. I didn’t realize she was on Glow! I’ve seen a couple of episodes, but never finished the first season. This has convinced me to revisit it!

Ahhhh I have such a huge soft spot for Kate … I used to volunteer at a Hospice in the UK and for one of her recent concerts last year she donated proceeds to us. Based on that alone I’m now going to binge watch GLOW!
