Is Princess Beatrice being influenced by Meghan Markle’s pre-royal style?

V&A Summer Party Arrivals in partnership with Harrods

By most accounts, both of the York princesses are into fashion. Both Eugenie and Beatrice enjoy having fun with clothes, and they like to wear colorful outfits, and sometimes choose more avant-garde designers too. That was said to be one of the many reasons why the York princesses weren’t crazy about the Duchess of Cambridge: they disliked how much attention Kate’s fashion got, especially considering that Kate’s style is so boring, matronly and button-covered. All that being said, I’ve never considered Princess Beatrice to be particularly fashion-forward either. She’s not pin-thin, which doesn’t matter, but I often felt like Bea doesn’t dress to flatter her curvier figure. But in this year, it’s almost like we’re seeing a whole new Bea: suddenly, she’s wearing cute minidresses to nightclubs and wearing ensembles like a movie star. So what’s the change? A celebrity stylist theorizes that Beatrice is being influenced by the Duchess of Sussex:

Celebrity stylist and PR agency owner Rochelle White told FEMAIL that Beatrice’s movement towards more flattering, age-appropriate looks has finally made her one of the most stylish women in the royal family. And her new image appears to have been inspired by the arrival of Meghan Markle, who cuts a stylish figure in chic minimalist and flattering pieces.

Rochelle explained: ‘Beatrice has definitely been taking notes on the royal fashion of Meghan. She has been a big influence on fashion, trends and style and I think she has seen the power in that. This has probably made her look at her own fashion and style choices.’

Rochelle explained how Beatrice’s once beloved frills, bold patterns and colours have been swapped for simple dresses and the jacket over the shoulders.’

Rochelle continued: ‘These are the looks that Meghan had before she became a royal. I think she has been inspired by past and current looks of Meghan. Looking at her, she has grown into a more sophisticated trendy style. The styles she is choosing now are much more fashionable and on trend. I think they look much more flattering for her. I really like her new look. Personally I thought she dressed older than her years and never really rated her outfits. Now, I feel she has been inspired by Kate and Meghan, which has helped her review her own style and help define what works for you and what she likes. I think she is coming into her own with her fashion and style choices and is great to see. This could open up the door for her.’

[From The Daily Mail]

I agree that Beatrice’s style has greatly improved over the past year, and I agree that part of it might be Meghan’s influence, as everyone in the royal family seems to have shifted with Meghan’s entrance into the royal fold. Plus, Harry is quite close to Beatrice and Eugenie, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Meghan, Beatrice and Eugenie talked about fashion and Meghan gave some advice. That being said, I think there are other factors in play too. Beatrice broke off a long-term relationship last year, and she’s been single for the first time in many years. Plus, she turns 30 this summer. She’s the last single girl standing in her royal generation. It makes sense to me that she’s changing things up because of that too – she’s going for more of a “happy, free and single lady at 30” vibe. It works.

Imagine growing up with such infamous parents (I mean, so often in the tabloids), being widely considered hideous and mocked constantly, if not unfavorably compared to Kate. I am so glad I’m a civilian!

    • Ari says:

Agree. It would just kill me if the press were constantly making fun of my looks the way the British press do to Beatrice and, to a lesser extent, Eugenie.

  2. grabbyhands says:

I have no opinion on her Meghan comparison, I just want to say that I love the peacock dress and the next time she wears it, she should also wear the blue shoes from the top picture.

    • AnnaKist says:

I love that dress, too. And I want the biker jacket. Having said that, I think simple styles and solid colours suit her best. She looks really good in the white/cream dress, but, golly, how would one walk (comfortably) in those blue shoes?! That blue dress she’s wearing while standing with her father… I sincerely hope it’s been torched.

    • Original Jenns says:

Me, too! And I think a lot of the change up has to be the single woman vibe, too. Single woman vibe very different from the single girl vibe, more mature, sexier, and happier. Out of a very long term relationship for awhile, and the last single person out of the grandchildren, hopefully she’s fulfilling herself, and maybe also getting new ideas from Meghan, if not advice.

    • Milla says:

      Amazing dress.

She has new stylist and it’s working. Finally.

    • Addison says:

No. That would take away from the dress. Right now the dress is the eye catching thing. She paired the shoes well with the white dress. The shoes are what catches the eye then you see the dress.

If Meghan in helping that is nice. She does look better with this new “look”.

  3. Becks1 says:

I do think she has looked better recently (over the past year or so?) I’m glad she seems to have found a middle ground between having fun with fashion but finding things that are flattering for her.

    • Lee Kuhl says:

I think her long term relationship break up played an influential role in her change. She has opted for more fashion forward and chosen well in dressing her body. She seems to be on a path towards finding herself and her voice through how she wants to present herself.

  4. Kim says:

Her fashion is mostly miss with some hits IMO.

I like that she tries to dress less “dowdy” and more age appropriate, the problem is that what she chooses is seldom flattering to her body shape.

It’s a bit baffling to me that someone in her position and with her wealth and resources has this issue.

    • Astrid says:

      +1

    • Mariposa says:

ITA. I have a figure that is very similar to hers, and I can’t for the life of me work out why she is wearing dresses with high necklines or billowy sleeves! They just make her look frumpy and bigger than she is. The peacock dress was a real winner….lower neckline, sleeker lines, good length. There are lots of styles that suit a slightly fuller figure with curves, so given her resources I can’t work out why her looks are often a miss.

    • magnoliarose says:

She isn’t wealthy. Her parents are broke and she doesn’t have a high power job. In order for her to get better clothes, she has to have a higher profile to make it worth it for the better designers.
I am guessing she has an allowance from the Queen but she doesn’t have access to Charles’ kind of largesse. He hates Andrew so I highly doubt he is footing the Yorks.

I haven’t liked much she wears and it has nothing to do with her fuller figure. I just think she doesn’t know how to dress her shape.

      • Bridget says:

Her parents are “broke” and it’s mostly Fergie even then (she got hung out to dry while Andrew is in the fold). Not only do all of the grandchildren have trust funds, but Andrew is still supported by the crown. She may not be fabulously wealthy, but she’s not slumming it either.

      • Kim says:

It’s known that she has *at least* 2 trust fund trust funds one from her great grandmother – the Queen Mother and a trust awarded to her after her father’s divorce from their mother, Sarah Ferguson. It’s speculated that she worth about 5 million.

She undoubtedly richer than 99% of us. I’m not saying she needs to splash out on designer duds, but she has more options and could hire a stylish (at least temporarily) to help teach her how to dress for her body shape – especially since she is in the public eye.

      • Mac says:

Since she is not a working royal she be allowed to take freebies. I’m sure loads of designers would love to dress her.

      • babypeanut says:

Besides her trust funds, doesn’t Andrew grift freebies from billionaires and pass them on to his girls? Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised if he passes on HM’s money that she spends on her favorite.

      • c8c8c8 says:

No, the Windsor men are cheap.

      • Addie says:

Beatrice has had a stylist in the past – Charlie Anderson – who worked wonders. I’d say she’s coming up from under after a long-term relationship and is simply moving on. I doubt Meghan or Harry have influenced anything – they are wrapped up in themselves. And Meghan didn’t have much style before she had access to real money. Nor does anyone need to feel sorry for Beatrice, a young woman with $5 million dollars to her name and who never earned a penny of it. Andrew’s household is paid for by the Queen (read: taxpayers) and I’d bet my last dollar that that money also pays for Beatrice and Eugenie.

  5. Peggy says:

That’s a big reach. Meghan’s pre-marriage style was pretty basic really. A bit classic, a bit trendy, nice but nothing remotely unique. Not unlike Kate pre-marriage actually. You could point to style similarities between her and most young women.

Beatrice is dressing like she normally does. A touch weird and frumpy at most royal events, and like a pretty normal 29yr old the rest of the time. She’s lost a bit of weight and current trends suit her better than those of a couple of years ago, but there’s been no big style evolution here.

  6. beatrixkiddo says:

“Woman in her 30’s starts dressing more attractively than she did in her 20’s” seems standard to all of us, I think.

  7. MerryMerryMonthofMay says:

YES! The peacock dress is beautiful

  8. Honey says:

No. She’s been trying for a long time to up her game. She’s had a string of good looks lately but I wouldn’t attribute that to Meghan. As a matter of fact, it was only last week that Meghan’s own clothes started to fit properly. Or was that this week? Bea has taken a lot of hits fashion-wise and otherwise. Let her have this victory all to herself.

On another note, isnt she supposedly working for some fashion house or doing something around fashion as a vocation? I can’t remember.

  9. Snap Happy says:

Oh man, these poor York girls can’t do anything on their own. I feel for them. You can almost feel the glee Charles gets from kicking Andrew to the side. It must be weird to be born royal and watch your cousin’s wives get all the benefits and compliments. I once read an article that said Prince William was fond of the York’s but considered them lesser royals. That’s gotta sting being in a family but also being in such a rigid hierarchy. Harry seems to be closer to them than William. This was obvious when he started dating their friend Cressida. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kate was thrilled when they broke up with her being Isabelle Calthorpe’s sister. That would have been awkward.

    • Enough Already says:

Your take on this is very tabloid. William gets along very well with Eugenie, a bit more so than with Beatrice, who is rumored to have a bit of her father’s love of status. William’s favorite cousin is Zara. Harry gets along with everyone. Charles took no particular glee in sidelining Andrew. He offered Andrew the chance to be a working royal but Andy chose to become trade ambassador instead. He made a money grab a priority over his royal duties, disgraced himself and the ambassadorship in the process and has no one to blame but himself. I do think the Yorks would make great junior royals though. They really seem more comfortable in their own skin late,y as well.

      • homeslice says:

I think Eugenie would be a good working royal. I follow her on insta, and I really like her. Beatrice, I just don’t know…she seems “spacey” for lack of a better word.

      • babypeanut says:

Didn’t William feel very protective of Beatrice and resent that loser she was with for a decade? You don’t do that if you don’t care for your cousin.

    • magnoliarose says:

I was shown an example of Cressida’s acting skills and dear this child can’t act. I mean she is bad. Maybe Kate saw an early cut of Dr. Thorne and decided to do the family a solid and freeze Miss Can’t Act To Save Her Life out of the picture.
      Just an alternate theory.

      • babypeanut says:

I saw her in a B-level horror movie. She wasn’t horrible, but she certainly wasn’t good. She was prettier than I ever found her in still photos.

    • c8c8c8 says:

The royal family needs to be smaller. Time to cut off all the lesser royals.

  10. Nev says:

Very chic in the top pic.

  11. perplexed says:

“That was said to be one of the many reasons why the York princesses weren’t crazy about the Duchess of Cambridge: they disliked how much attention Kate’s fashion got, especially considering that Kate’s style is so boring, matronly and button-covered. ”

That blue dress up there that Beatrice is wearing looks matronly.

Since their mom was overshadowed by Diana, why would they surprised Kate’s fashion gets attention? Like, you’d have to super stupid not to know that William wasn’t likely to marry someone unpleasant-looking or chubby (did either brother? — clearly, no), and whoever that person was, as long as they looked presentable and well-groomed, was going to get attention for what they wear? Fashion media is kind of shallow to begin with — they tend to pay attention to the prettier people. If you want to put your priorities towards fashion media paying attention to you, then you have to more or less accept their shallowness on that level. I don’t even think this is about rank….fashion media like slim people with presentable faces and Kate hits that mark better than the York sisters do. It is what it is. She and Meghan are obviously prettier than the other royals. The commoners are generally better looking (yay for commoners) — lack of inbreeding? — than the people born with rank, so…

If this type of story is to be believed, this makes them seem slightly…naive? I hesitate to say dumb but …..

    • babypeanut says:

It’s unfortunate but true nevertheless, the Windsor marry ins are always more attractive than the Windors themselves. It’s good to mix up the DNA a little.

  12. Larelyn says:

How about: she is working in NYC with a high profile art house and could be influenced by the fashion of her clientel and peers…? The Duchex influence could be there, but I’d give more credit to her work/civilian environment. Whichever, it’s working.

  13. Bridget says:

Bea improved her fashion game years ago after bringing on a stylist (don’t begrudge her that). She just doesn’t have a middle ground, she either hits it out of the park or totally misses. I don’t know why anyone would say that it’s Meghan’s influence.

  14. magnoliarose says:

Eugenie seems to be the brighter, more together of the Yorkies. She also seems to be friendlier and more likable. Beatrice is vague as in she doesn’t seem to really do anything.
I have never seen her in anything I love. She looks cute in the peacock dress. That is best I have seen but other than that not so much.
Beatrice has unconventional looks so I think she should find unique styles that show her drive for individuality. She seems to like to look different and put her own spin on things. She just needs some help to achieve it. Her hair is a huge problem. It never looks right. A trendier cut would do wonders for her.

    • Addie says:

Agree with all you said. Eugenie is a bit more down to earth so finds life a little easier. Beatrice seems more like her father – caught up with meaningless status and a source of never-ending misery for all who get off on it.

  15. Moon says:

Love that last ensemble with the bold dress and leather jacket

  16. Bridget says:

Also, I adore that Mary Katranzou dress.

  17. homeslice says:

She’s most likely just maturing. Some of her earlier clothes are just downright clownish.

I thought she looked really pretty at Trooping with minimal make-up. IMO, she should continue to take the less is more approach.

  18. launicaangelina says:

I love the black mini skirt and white jacket combo! I’d wear that outfit.

  19. KiddV says:

I want to squeeze those bubbles on that blue dress.

    • Natalia says:

No kidding. When I first saw that dress I thought she was telling the world “see I’m the real princess.” That cap and those sleeves literally screams Disney movie. “Hey I’m a princess – don’t forget it!”

  20. harla says:

I don’t see what’s wrong with being inspired by someone else. I work with a woman who’s style I just love and it’s totally inspired me to take a look at my closet, not to match her style exactly but find my own style and bring it together. Thanks to that inspiration I’ve cleaned out a lot of items that just didn’t look good on me or that I didn’t love. Now I have a closet that contains items that I enjoy and that look good on me. Lastly, if Beatrice is taking fashion advice from Meghan then more power to her, I would if I had the chance.

  21. perplexed says:

I don’t really see any similarities between Beatrice’s and Meghan’s style. Like, I can’t picture Meghan going out of her way to wear peacocks. Meghan usually seems to pick a solid colour and stick to it.

  22. Pandy says:

I highly doubt it’s MM’s influence – that’s insulting, really. She’s single and young and figuring out what works. With access to the best of everything. Some outfits will eventually work out for her. The law of averages and all, lol. She needs new hair though.

  23. babypeanut says:

I think Bea’s issues it she’s quite the pear shape. I remember years ago when she was being criticized for being “fat”. I couldn’t believe it because I would never use that word for her. When googling, I found some bikini pictures of her. Above the waist she was petite, but her butt and thighs were large. That has to be a challenge when looking for stylish clothes.

  24. Sarah says:

I’ve always felt sorry for beatrice and Eugenie the amount of critism they get especially Beatrice mainly aimed at the way she looks which she can’t do anything about as for her clothes perhaps she just wears what she’s comfortable not what she thinks others will like royal woman are often spoken about as if they are dolls as if we have the right to choose what they wear the constant critism they get must get to them they are not working royals yet constantly get called work shy they have a trust fund from their grandmother they are not answerable to the public and when they do charity work on their own time they get no credit for it they can’t win

  25. OkieOpie says:

I am sorry but she really has no style.
