Britney Spears: ‘If I have a steak, I will be sick for three days’

29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards - Arrivals

I was going to write about Britney Spears talking about her “tour diet” – which involves McDonalds Happy Meals – but then I actually heard her voice in this Entertainment Tonight interview. OMG. Granted, it’s been a while since I actually listened to her speak naturally, but I didn’t realize how much her whole vibe had changed. She’s a lot more alert nowadays, and she talks fast with a weird, half-froggy, half-little-girl voice:

Maybe it’s only crazy to me, but I remember when Britney’s voice sounded so different than this! I’m shook. Anyway, she did talk to ET about her tour diet, saying:

“This round of shows that we are doing on tour, they are back to back, so each show is like… I don’t have time apart, besides flying. My show is a workout in itself. It really keeps you strong…Sometimes I’m just like, ‘I want a hamburger!’ but when I’m in work mode, I want [to eat] very clean. I want clean chicken and veggies that’s it. My stomach is so sensitive, if I have a steak, I will be sick for three days. The burger is fine, but I have the small burgers from McDonald’s. The happy meal!”

[From ET]

As I get older, I find that red meat upsets my stomach more and more as well. I only really crave red meat when I’m PMSing, so maybe that’s why I feel like hell anyway, regardless of the steak or hamburger. My guess is that Britney’s the same – she grew up on fried food and rich, heavy, Southern food, but her stomach has changed over the years, and she likes cleaner, simpler food. Plus, I’m guessing she’s still on an assortment of medications, and they might upset her stomach too.

Also, how do we feel about her latest boyfriend, Sam Asghari? He’s cute.

some days you just got to dance! @samasghari

Wish she would tone down the kohl-Blackened eyes. Not a good look for a blonde over 25.

    • Alissa says:

the thing that throws me is how she’s messed with her mouth with fillers or Botox. I’m not sure what it is, but it looks weird.

    • OkieOpie says:

It is kind of a southern thing. If you are in the south, you will notice a lot of women there do that kind of eye makeup.

  2. girl_ninja says:

If I have a steak, I’m happy for days. But I only have steak about once a month.

  3. Jane says:

I cannot stand this new way of talking with full on “vocal fry”. It absolutely grates on my ears to no end.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Vocal fry has been on my last nerve for years. YEARS! It’s laughable when teens do it. But adult women are cringeworthy. This woman at my gym drops her kids off at the kid center, finds me, and launches into her latest escapades complete with heavy vocal fry. So so many millennial women are doing this, and I wonder if they think it sounds hip? Now? Young? Cool? It sounds utterly ridiculous.

      • mlle says:

There’s a ‘This American Life’ bit about the fallacy of vocal fry being a woman thing (it’s act II of episode 545). Recommend you listen to it: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/545/if-you-dont-have-anything-nice-to-say-say-it-in-all-caps/act-two

Basically, a lot of people speak like this, both men and women, but a linguist at UPenn found that there is no evidence that this is either on the rise, or a new phenomenon. However, people do tend to critique in particular *women* who speak this way – but not men, who can speak the very same way.

      • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

“However, people do tend to critique in particular *women* who speak this way – but not men, who can speak the very same way.”

From personal experience, I’ve only heard women. When I hear a man linger his last syllables with a gutteral bass purr, I’ll be sure to come back here and make fun and complain lol.

      • Jane says:

I hear you. I am a teacher and if you can believe this—a reading resource teacher at my school talks this way and it makes me bat s*** crazy. Imagine teaching children how to speak this way… SMH.

      • Ms. Blake says:

I earned a BSc degree in speech and hearing sciences 4 years ago and at that time, many of the instructors commented that vocal fry and “upspeak” were on the rise, hence them scrambling to revamp criteria in order to be relevant so I tend not to side with the UPenn academic–nothing personal. None of the textbooks I had to buy (at an exorbitant cost) even addressed the issue of vocal fry and these were updated/current additions at the time.

That being said, I had to attend a class given by a linguistic professor who adamantly refused to admit that people who grew up on the “west coast” of the USA have an accent. I grew up in northern NV and I definitely speak with different inflections than my cousins who grew up in CT and it’s not just a slang term thing.

      • smcollins says:

I had to google “vocal fry” because I had no idea what it meant lol. I have a friend in her mid-late 40’s who has spoken this way for yeeeeeaaaaarrrrs. A male friend of ours used to make fun of it and would do the perfect impression of how she speaks, it was pretty funny. They have been friends since high school and she is used to his ribbing, so she has a good sense of humor about it. But, yeah…it can get kind of grating after listening to her speak for a while.

    • magnoliarose says:

Ugh. I hate it. It started about 5 years or so ago. It is even worse when someone has to keep drinking water or swallowing in order to sustain it.

    • tealily says:

Some people just talk like this. I hate the hating on people for how they talk. Get over it. Let these people live their lives! [Insert a “Leave Britney alone!” here?]

    • raincoaster says:

But she’s the one who started it. Look at “Oops, I did it again” which is EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD this year. Really, #BlameBritney.

    • OkieOpie says:

It annoys me too but I think in her case her voice could be fried from years of performing and smoking.

  4. Lisa says:

How is a steak worse for her stomach than Mickey D’s??!

    • Livethelifeaquatic says:

Meat is one of the most difficult food items for your system to digest.

      • Lisa says:

        Indeed. Source: am a vegan.

      • Dana marie says:

I see this all the time with patients. She may have low stomach acid and may need HCl and or digestive enzymes to help her digest her steak properly.

      • KiddV says:

Beef is in no way more difficult to digest than chicken or fish, it all takes the same amount of energy and time. The human body is made to digest animal meat.

    • Gigi LaMoore says:

If she says it does, it does. She should know what her stomach can take.

      • Lisa says:

Right, but nutritionally, a steak and a McDonald’s burger are not the same things. You can make a simple steak with 1 or 2 ingredients. Look at the list of ingredients that go into a McD’s burger, and how each of those has additives and preservatives, and other potential irritants.

      • tealily says:

There’s way less meat in a McDonald’s burger than in a steak though. The carbs in the bun digest quickly and easily. More ingredients =/= harder to digest. I have IBS and my stomach is much happier with bread and pasta that with steaks. And yeah, I have no problem with a McDonald’s burger.

      • HadleyB says:

Well for ME a McD cheeseburger slides right in AND slides right out….where a steak gives me constipation. So there is that. Same with White Castle ..but fixes an upset stomach in a jiffy. I am guessing the grease.

        I don’t know and don’t care..it just works! LOL

    • Veronica S, says:

The serving size is the real issue, I would assume. Happy meals for kids are tiny – like, four chicken nuggets? And she probably isn’t getting the fries but the apple slices. Chicken is a lot lighter on the stomach than beef, particularly since a lot of the non-prime cuts have more fat in them. I like steak, but I don’t eat it often, either, because it does sit heavy on my stomach for several hours. There’s a reason people lose weight on those protein-heavy, low-carb diets – it takes longer for your stomach to digest heavy proteins, which slows gastric emptying and reduces cravings. Vegetables take longer for your body to fully digest, but their carbohydrate base means they move along the digestive tract faster.

    • st says:

I wonder about this too. In addition to that, maybe grass fed beef might cause a different reaction. Maybe. Also, I hate to be mean, but is she being honest?

      • Lisa says:

When I ate fast food, it used to sit on my stomach. I always felt heavy afterward and hungry sooner. Never had that problem with just a plain steak or other meat. Someone was like “IF SHE SAYS IT DOES, IT DOES,” up thread, but it just doesn’t make sense that a simple steak bothers her when a processed burger doesn’t. We’re all different and bodies are weird, but it’s almost like her body is acclimatd to junk food and rejects healthy food, lol.

      • KB says:

I doubt she’d admit to eating McDonald’s hamburgers but not steaks. I’d never heard of them bothering people, but there are quite a few comments here supporting that.

White fish has always given me stomach cramps. I have no idea why. It’s not an allergic reaction I don’t think because it’s like sharp stomach pains. It doesn’t matter if it’s baked, grilled, or fried. Shellfish and salmon don’t do it at all. And I can eat processed junk food, dairy, gluten, etc for days with no issue.

      • tealily says:

Dude, why would this be something she is lying about? I can personally attest that a McDonald’s hamburger is easier on my stomach than a steak. Jesus, people.

      • st says:

Doesn’t she have a history of gorging on fast food? That’s why I think she would lie. I remember reading something about her where someone who works for her would find a lot of fast food bags and packaging underneath her bed. No, I’m not making it up either.

      • tracking says:

I think it’s about portion size. She’s comparing the tiny amount of meat in a McD’s Kids Meal cheeseburger vs. a (presumably) large steak.

  5. BendyWindy says:

My husband is struggling with this. He loves steak, but he’s noticed in the last few months that beef gives him gastro-intestinal issues. He’s a really unhappy camper.

  6. BendyWindy says:

Also, she doesn’t sound that different from what I remember. More California than southern in her accent now, but she sounds good and looks relatively healthy. She’s always done that breathy baby voice thing. Meh.

  7. saltandpepper says:

Love her. Admire how she turned her life around and she looks fabulous.

  8. Gaby says:

I think years of smoking plus the fake baby voice they made her sing in permanently altered her vocal cords. She had a deeper voice when she began, but I guess it wasn’t “sexy” enough like the baby kitten voice.

I feel bad talking about her appearence but I just feel bad for her in general. She needs a new make up artist/hairdresser and stylist to slowly update her look while making sure she is comfortable with it.

I can’t watch her perform or listen to her interviews anymore because I feel that she is just going through the motions, I don’t know if this is the life she really wants for herself, but I pray for her and hope that she is happy doing what she loves.

    • Jag says:

You’re spot on. I watched a video which showed her early performances compared to middle and then now. The baby voice they forced her to have has wrecked her voice and it’s hard for her to sustain it, which is why she doesn’t like to sing live, apparently.

She definitely needs to consider updating her look. She’s reminding me of the old Pamela Anderson; Pamela updated her look and looks much better now.

As for what she said about a steak versus McD’s, perhaps the possibility that the burger isn’t really much meat might be a clue. lol

  9. bella says:

UGH….vocal fry is horrific. learn to speak. It’s terrible.

  10. Birdie says:

I like her, but why is her makeup ALWAYS so poorly done?!

  11. Beth says:

Fake, baby, trying hard to sound sweet and sexy voices like Britney Spears and Khloe Kardashians, are annoying, and smoking and singing also effects the voice over time.
My bf loves a thick, juicy steak, but can’t digest it correctly and is up all night and miserable if he takes the risk of eating it

  12. Esmom says:

She sounds similar to how I remember but my big takeaway was that she’s 36! Wow, I feel old. I’m glad she seems so healthy now (burgers and red meat notwithstanding, lol).

  13. magnoliarose says:

Whoever worked on her mouth didn’t help her at all. It is obvious she finds it hard to get around the surgery and it is distracting. So is her dated look. 🙁 I just feel bad for her.

    • KB says:

Any idea what she did to her mouth? It looks so weird and jokerish, but I can’t figure out what exactly she did. A botched corner lip lift maybe?

      • Mkf says:

I think she got Botox above the lip to get rid of fine lines and it ended up freezing the area and doesn’t move naturally anymore.

      • magnoliarose says:

I think what Mkf says is true also with fillers and something else I can’t put my finger on. It seems permanent.

      • soph says:

It looks like veneers and botox.

  14. KB says:

I feel so bad for people who have such sensitive stomachs. I really hope mine doesn’t change with age. I’m 31 and nothing really bothers me. I’ll bloat if I eat too many pickles and whitefish gives me stomach cramps. I can’t imagine getting sick from steak, I’d really hate that. I don’t have it often, but I do love it.

  15. Rob says:

Wtf happened to her ??? Is it even her anymore ? What did they do to her ???? Body double ? Clone ? Or just has been through way too much ? Love u Brit . But seirously wtf

  16. stacy says:

why do they do her eye make up like that under her eye?!?! it makes her look like her make up is running down her face, like she jumped out of a pool and her mascara is running

  17. Gippy says:

I stop having a taste for red meat and didn’t eat it for a few years. With my low iron I sometimes crave it, but have to be careful and ground meat or super tender crockpot cook meat is much easier to digest than steak. Now I can only handle it in some amounts. It makes me extremely nauseous (for a day or 2) if I eat too much. Which is a shame bc I love a good filet!

  18. JoJo says:

I don’t get the word “clean” in relation to any meat at all.

  19. elle says:

When the video started, with her dancing about robotically, I heard “Piece of Me” as “Piece of Meat.” It seemed appropriate.* WTF happened to her? Her face and eyes look so old – not in a wrinkled, aged way, but in an exhausted way. And the shape of her head is so different. I think it’s a robot wearing Britney’s skin.

ETA: * Not how I think of her, but how she’s been treated by the industry, that is.

  20. Evie says:

On a positive note: Britney seems to be in a good place. She looks and acts healthy, very present and “with it.” Physical exercise also helps and Britney’s in great shape.

  21. Loca says:

I think Britney looks fantastic and works really hard on her body when so many popstars are overweight and drinking all the time.

  22. Sasha says:

As someone who grew up with ‘Hit me..’ I will always have love for BritBrit.

  23. Luci Lu says:

    Sounds like she has diverticulitis.
