Victoria Beckham is incorporating crystals into her latest Pre-Fall line

I like jewelry and pretty stones and crystals as much as the next person. As a kid, I was obsessed with those stone and crystals you can buy at the Smithsonian or any natural history museum – I collected those samples, and I remember being enchanted with them. But as a grown-up, I can’t say I’ve ever believed in the “healing power” of crystals. “Crystals” were a trend when I was growing up – I remember people being into them in the ‘90s. They’re coming back into fashion, and not just among the Goop crowd (although the Goop crowd LOVES crystals). As it turns out, Victoria Beckham is trying to make fashion-crystals happen. She’s incorporating crystals into her Pre-Fall collection. She spoke to Elle Magazine about it.

Her first crystal experience: “My first crystal was a black obsidian and I still carry it everywhere with me! I like to surround myself with positive energy, and so often have a little collection of crystals in my handbag. More recently though, I have been wearing the tri-stone pendant necklace—from my Pre Autumn Winter 2018 collection. [Wearing it] is a nice way to make sure I always have a crystal close by.

How to wear crystals on clothing: “We clipped crystals onto belt loops, and included secret pockets for them on wide leg trousers—so you can carry charms wherever you go.”

Recommendations for books about crystals: “I don’t think I could pinpoint just one source. It’s years of reading, plus recommendations from friends that have given me an understanding of the power of crystals. I really want to share some of that knowledge with my customers.

How to choose crystals: “I started by looking at my own crystal collection, and thinking about what might be important to my customer. She’s strong and successful, and I wanted to offer something that could provide support navigating her career and her personal life… As with all my collections, I want to make my customer feel confident and secure, and for me adding crystals felt like a nice way to help do that.

Her current go-to crystal: “My current go-to is a White Howlite crystal. It’s a calming gemstone that relieves stress, calms the mind, and relaxes the whole body.

The crystal for a balance between work and home: “Yellow Calcite—it’s associated with positive energy that increases personal motivation and drive!

A crystal for love: “I’d recommend the Rose Quartz, it’s known as the crystal of love.

[From Elle]

I take it back – I think Victoria IS part of the Goop crowd. This must be the thing these days, wealthy women (mostly white) with too much money and time on their hands, who think that crystal energies are the thing. Women like Victoria and Gwyneth Paltrow have found better ways to monetize that and sell rocks to women and tell them that the rocks have magical powers. I’ll admit that in some cases – perhaps many cases – there is a placebo effect that happens with crystals, in that you believe in the crystals’ beneficial properties so much that they actually begin to “work” in some mind-over-matter way. I would shrug and say, hey, everybody’s different and if you want to carry a rose quartz in your pocket for good luck, then God bless and that’s actually pretty harmless. But I do sort of hate that women like Victoria and Gwyneth are monetizing this. Ugh.

It looks like she needs to surround herself with as much empty mumbo-jumbo as possible, her fashion line lost over £8 million last year.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

The problem with VB fashion line is she pitched herself as high fashion which she ain’t – she should have initially pitched herself around the mid level designer fashion and once up and running properly (and maybe making a profit) she should have created a couture line. She thought brand Beckham would be enough to bank. Her stuff ain’t terrible but too expensive and unattainable for those people who should be her demographic.

      • Becks1 says:

Yes! When I see people wearing her stuff I usually like it (or like pieces of it) but the prices are insane and the styles aren’t usually that cutting edge (meaning they would work for the most part in my boring suburban mom life. Not all of them, but some, lol.) But I’m not paying those prices.

While Jessica Simpson’s fashion line hauls in $1 billion annually in sales… with or without the ‘power’ of crystals.

This woman clearly misunderstood who her target consumers were. People see her as the Spice Girl married to a football player when they were not fashion victims and stylish yet, had huge bolt-ons and a fake tan all the time. Her stylish years are slim in proportion to her less sophisticated – let’s say – period (most of her life). Had she gone the affordable route she would have money now. What she does is steal ideas of better designers anyway, à la Zara and H&M so there is not reason for people who can afford her clothes to buy them since they can go to the originals.

      • Seraphina says:

Yes DU, so agree. Always wondered why she started so high up.

      • Tiffany says:

After the success of her line with Target, you would think she would get with the program, but….no.

      • minx says:

Yes, and are really wealthy people going to be bowled over by Victoria Beckham? IMO no.

      • c8c8c8 says:

Completely agree. She should have gone the Tory Burch/Kate Spade route and then after being successful launched a high end collection.

  2. Slowsnow says:

This woman seems profoundly sad and is catering to profoundly sad women like her.

  3. Becks1 says:

I like the outfit she’s wearing in the top picture. A lot.

Crystals for necklaces etc – sounds good. Secret pockets for carrying crystals? Um I’ll pass, thanks.

  4. Willa says:

Nicole Ritchie is doing crystals in her House of Harlow line as well. Guess I’m on trend because I’ve been wearing an amethyst necklace for years.

  5. OriginalLala says:

I used to wear jade alot, it was my favorite – then GOOP started telling people to stuff jade eggs up their hoohas, I couldn’t look at my jade pieces for a little while after that came out because I just kept picturing GOOP and her stupid jade vadge 🙁

  6. Electric Tuba says:

Semi precious gemstones/crystals do not carry special powers but bringing them to earth takes a toll on the earth and the humans used to fetch them.

It’s literally repackaged and marketed rocks.
Pretty rocks. If those rocks were magic how come the people who mine them are poor? They are touching the rocks all day after all. Hmmmmm? Mm hmm

    • Sojaschnitzel says:

This is probably the best argument I have heard so far against this crazy BS. I have lost friends when they started telling me that they absolutelydootely neeeeeed their crystals right now because their vibrations where all wrong and they needed support. One guy told me that his family’s dog got cured from cancer by sleeping on a large rose quartz. If I remember correctly, that might have been the last time we ever spoke..

    • gf says:

I would rather see celebrities hawking their crystals than lollipop appetite suppressant or some Scientology nonsense. This is pretty harmless in comparison to other things.

    • Erinn says:

Not all precious/semi-precious stones are causing the same kind of environmental impacts. I know a guy working at a diamond mine in NWT Canada. He’s doing well. Not that it’s great for the earth, but the blood diamond kind of stuff has gotten A LOT better than it used to be. I can walk along some beaches in my province and find amethyst and other gemstones. Tons of sapphires are coming from Montana – knowing your sources and that people are being paid fairly is important though.

Refinery 29 keeps trying to make crystals happen. Crystals and horoscopes are for suckers. They’re Alex Jones supplements for liberals.

  8. Birdix says:

I went to camp as a kid and came back with a heavy suitcase full of these “chocolate chip” rocks I’d found and loved. 🙂 This feels like snake oil salesmenship—especially as she can’t point to any source of her info.

  9. Seraphina says:

So she’s bedazzling her clothing? POSH, how could you????? 😉

  10. Chaine says:

Those jeans took AWFUL on her. She needs to burn them.

The crystal thing is the ultimate in “s*** rich white ladies do.” There is a store in my town that sells nothing but crystals. It blows my mind that there are enough women that believe this claptrap to keep a whole store in business.

  11. Eliza says:

By a wide margin, the US had the highest placebo effect compared to any other country in the world. I do not believe a rock/crystal has healing abilities, although I recognize many non-wstern medicines do work, this is not one I believe in. But if carrying around a hunk of earth makes them ‘feel’ better, they’re not hurting anyone. So sure, do you. It’s not dangerous like some of GOOPs snake oil.

I wonder about the relationship between that dubious honor and the fact that healthcare is so damn expensive…

  12. Mo' Comments Mo' Problems says:

🙁 I do not believe that this works and that she should be incorporating and selling this…but I understand that this may be what she needs to cope with how her husband is and how he treats her.

  13. JET says:

What’s the crystal that works for nepotism?

  14. Lexilla says:

“I don’t think I could pinpoint just one source” = “I didn’t actually read any books about this bullshite I’m peddling. Would you?”

    • MaryContrary says:

I read that question as shade since she very famously said she doesn’t read books.

  15. Yup, Me says:

I want her purse in that first picture. Off to hunt…

I have no issue with people using crystals to support themselves in being more calm and balanced. Meditation is basically what they’re doing and Lord knows we all need more of that. People are a hot toxic mess.

  16. ib says:

what a stupid way to make your purse heavy to carry — lugging rocks around it.

  17. Ao says:

The old guy with white hair says it better than me. NOPE.
