Why is it always the father that gets asked by the guy for his daughter’s “hand in marriage”? Does the father own his daughter? Does the mom not count for anything? Do we really need to in this day and age ask ANYONE other than the prospective bride for her hand?

    • HK9 says:

I actually believe it is a tradition from the time where women were indeed property and you had to ask her father if you could marry his daughter.

      • me says:

I know but it’s 2018 now, why is it still being practiced?

      • Mia4s says:

Yeah the origins of the tradition are pretty awful but given you’re joining a family I’d say I’m fine with asking for a blessing (not permission!!! Ugh.) from the PARENTS. Judging the hell out of any guy who just asks Dad though. 😒

    • minx says:

We didn’t do anything like that. We decided that we were going to get married at some point and then told everyone. There was no asking involved.

    • Veronica S, says:

This was an actual fight between my friends when they got engaged. The wife knew her father was very traditionalist and expected to be asked, so she just sort of rolled her eyes and saw it as no big deal. Her (now) husband was really put off, though. He not only found it grossly sexist but outright offensive – since it’s not like he wasn’t going to marry her even if he said no, lol. It turned into a surprisingly tense argument before he finally gave in reluctantly.

    • Lightpurple says:

My cousin just asked his fiancée’s mom at Christmas. He got her Dad’s blessing too but he asked the mom. They, along with his parents, all managed to keep it secret until he proposed on her birthday in February

    • magnoliarose says:

It is so absurd. My husband asked ME. But he did ask my mother if he thought I would marry him and asked my brothers who he is close to and then my father and grandparents. No one said a word until he did ask. I found it endearing and very sweet that he knew how important they are to me and knew it was me AND my family he was marrying.

    • broodytrudy says:

Dh asked my dad my dad is super traditional and had been dealing with a lot at that point. My dad was very grateful. I would have married DH whether or not he said yes, but it was a nice show of respect my husband felt was necessary for my father.

      • AMA1977 says:

My brother-in-law asked my dad for permission to marry my sister and my dad said, “it’s up to her, not me!” My husband didn’t ask him, lol.

    • JanetDR says:

My daughter’s fiance asked me (the mama) several months before he asked her. They were on vacation when he proposed and he set up his phone as though they were taking a picture to capture the moment for me. It was really sweet. I think he was just trying to be traditional.

  2. Milla says:

Thank heavens for all those boys and their young coach getting out. It just brought back my faith in humanity.

    • jwoolman says:

Did you see that delightful drawing that two young Thai girls in Bangkok did to commemorate the rescue? They posted it on Facebook, I think. They had little animals to represent the different countries involved (tiger for China, eagle for USA, kangaroo for Australia, lots of others). Reporters were represented by a flock of birds. The boys were little wild boars and their coach was a bigger one, swimming in the water it seemed. Thai SEALs were, well, seals! Divers were frogs. It was very creative and adorable.

      • Cali says:

This sounds so darn sweet and adorable and I’m going to look for the picture now. I’ve been watching this story so closely and so so very happy that those boys and their coach are ALIVE and free from that cave. Rest In Peace to the Thai Navy Seal-man who lost his life and boy wasn’t he handsome, just gorgeous.

  3. PBAN says:

So so happy that everyone is out of the cave. Prayers to all of them.

  4. Mia4s says:

Eventually when there is enough smoke I start to suspect a fire. Bye Anna?

Billy Dee Williams is coming back in Star Wars IX….so they can kill another legacy character. Oh joy. Look Billy Dee is the coolest but honestly I just rolled my eyes at this news. I have zero f**ks to give about Episode 9, they’ve lost me.

  5. Snazzy says:

I was just re watching the Tudors the other day, JRM was so great in that. Ugh, sad he’s still such a mess

    • Milla says:

He’s one of the best actors of his generation and really so damn good looking. Sadly, his carrer, his wife and a child, his persona, they are all drowning in alcohol.
He’s been like this for a decade, at least. I don’t think he’s gonna be around much longer.
I love Velvet goldmine, it’s still one of the best movies ever made. He was so young and sooo good in it… Shame.

    • magnoliarose says:

He spoke out once about being abused in Hollywood so I think he has some mental scars. I remember someone saying or reading or somewhere I can’t remember that he had sad reasons for his inability to keep it together.

      • VirgiliaCoriolanus says:

He has always seemed to be profoundly sad to me…..always…. It’s just in his eyes. I follow his wife on IG and she seems to be perpetually cheery/happy in a non obvious way (she doesn’t post very often, doesn’t post a lot of their son and most of the pics of their son have his face mostly covered)……so I hope they make it.

  6. Lady D says:

Hallelujah they got everyone out. I’m so happy and I really, really needed to hear some good news about now. Major respect to the Navy Seals, Army, volunteer divers, search teams, police, first aid doctors and volunteers, not to mention the international offers of help pouring in. I think we all needed a happy ending for those boys. So glad they’re safe.

  7. Nicegirl says:

Yes, I think she’s headed out, not sure how, is she leaving of her own accord or being asked to leave???

I’m so happy about the cave rescue.

  8. VeronicaLodge says:

It is rather archaic to ask the father’s permission. My ex-husband took both my parents out for lunch a couple of weeks before he proposed to ask for their blessing. I thought it was sweet and when I found out about it after the proposal, explained why my parents couldn’t talk to me for those weeks. They were giddy and worried about spilling the beans!

    • brooksie says:

Love it! My husband called both of my parents (we live across the country from them) and he had them both super involved in the proposal. I love that he included them so much!

  9. HelloSunshine says:

Off topic but does anyone else have issues getting onto DListed on mobile? I basically do everything on my phone and can’t go on there because it’s always getting hit with redirect ads. Is there a solution for that? I miss reading over there 🙁

    • me says:

I stopped going to Dlisted a long time ago because of those damn redirect ads.

    • lucy2 says:

I get them all the time too. I haven’t been on in a while because of it.

    • Cali says:

Yes, I cannot go onto Dlisted anymore without a redirect so I just stopped. The site is filled with viruses.

  10. Lisa says:

I expected more from that “mmmm.” Those were not the wet Keanu pics I was expecting!

  11. Tania says:

In great news, Serena won her match today. I was home sick yesterday and was able to watch. I texted my husband and asked him to record today’s match but kept track online and freaked when she dropped the first set.

  12. huncamunca says:

I hope Anna leaves. I won’t start subscribing again until she’s gone.

And I’m sad to see Rhys-Meyers is still struggling. I thought he’d gotten himself together after marrying and having a baby. What a disappointment. I loved him in The Tudors.

  13. lucy2 says:

It’s a shame JRM can’t get it together. He’s a talented guy, but too much of a mess, and it does not sound like a healthy place for his wife and young kid to be. Hope they’re ok.
Glad everyone got rescued, but how sad for the rescuer who died while trying to help. There are some amazing people out there in the world, risking their lives to help others.

  14. magnoliarose says:

Anna is supposed to be leaving soon. I say “supposed” because I can’t imagine her leaving without being forcibly removed. Until her body is actually out of the building and someone else is installed I am afraid to feel hopeful.

  15. Lyla says:

I’m glad everyone’s out of the cave. Now can we get the kids out of cages?

  16. angry bird says:

I look forward to Wintour’s departure.
