Duchess Meghan changed into a smart black trouser suit in Dublin Day 2

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex in Ireland

Here are more photos from Day 2 of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal tour of Ireland. These photos are from their visit to Croke Park in Dublin. Afterwards, they did a walkabout at Trinity College. Earlier in the day, Meghan wore a grey Roland Mouret dress to meet the Irish president, but after that meeting, she seemed to get a chance to change her outfit for what would be a more athletic outing. For the first time – ?? – since the engagement, Meghan wore TROUSERS. She wore an actual pantsuit!! And it looked amazing. I love that she’s no longer doing the exaggerated hemline too – during the engagement, I loved that she wore trousers but I hated the length of her pant leg. These trousers have a smart length. The jacket looks cropped to me too. Update: the suit is Givenchy, apparently.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail continues to nitpick every little thing Meghan is doing “wrong.” I honestly just now checked in to see what they were writing about her, and it’s not even worth detailing. Meghan is doing fine. One thing of interest I did see: Meghan AND Harry are rolling with an eleven-person entourage. The DM wants to make it sound like Meghan needs 11 people to work on her look, but it seems like the DM is counting all of the Kensington Palace communications people tasked on the trip and more. That being said, Meghan has a personal assistant, a hair stylist and some kind of fashion helper/dresser with her. Which is… fine.

I love it. LOVE IT. She is making all my duchess-style dreams come true. I’m so excited. She looks fabulous.

    • Jan90067 says:

      Gorgeous!

Love the ankle pants and cropped jacket. *Only* change I would do is a flat shoe or block heel for walking on grass. Those spikes sink down in grass lol. But, she seems to be handling it, so kudos! She looks lovely; THIS is her best kind of look.

      • LadyMTL says:

ITA, I can only imagine how dirty the heels of the shoes must have been after walking around on the grass (I speak from experience, lol.)
Otherwise yes, the suit is amazing and I want it in my closet now.

      • KiddV says:

You know what would work perfectly for walking in the grass????? Wedges of Doom!!! I’m sure Kate would have let her borrow a couple of pairs.

But seriously, I like wedges and that’s what I would have worn.

      • Milla says:

She’s tiny. Heels give her confidence. Also, rhe shoes are magnificent.

    • Noodles says:

I kind of almost do but does anyone else think that those trousers aren’t quite right with that jacket? The colour and fabric don’t quite go.

      • magnoliarose says:

It is a suit not separates so they are the same fabric. Maybe the lighting in the photos makes it look different? I don’t see it though.

      • Nadia says:

I think the trousers need to be more fitted around the thighs/hips. The bagginess and creasing is throwing off the look.

      • Masamf says:

@Nadia whaaat????, Heck to the no way, the pants fit just fine. There needs to be no adjustment whatsoever, anywhere thighs or otherwise, they look fabulous!!

      • MeghanNotMarkle says:

It’s niggling at me, which is why I can’t give this an A+. It doesn’t quite go together and the hem on the jackets seems just a wee bit too short. But it’s still a spectacular showing. A solid A.

      • Mac says:

She is, once again, under-accessorized, which makes the look seem incomplete.

      • Sue says:

I’m pretty sure I saw this suit at “Ross.”

You know, she’d be super adorable with her natural curls. Her hair is over-processed and so fly-away.

      • PrincessK says:

I think that the jacket and trousers are different shades but it works.

      • BeanieBean says:

I thought the same thing, that the jacket & trousers weren’t quite the same shade of black or the same fabric, meaning the identification of the outfit as a suit not quite right.

    • Nic919 says:

This is a great look. It’s how a professional woman dresses.

      • Coz' says:

I love the suit. But it is not how EVERY professional women dress.
Because many women go to work and kick ass while wearing jeans!
Now, if you say that’s how a duchess dresses, I agree.

      • Nic919 says:

It’s how a working duchess dresses.

      • Masamf says:

Its how A LOT of professional women dress to work. You’ll find VERY FEW workplaces that allow jeans. Or perhaps I should say: here in Canada, you’ll find VERY FEW workplaces that allow jeans to work except on special “jeans” days. Even in retail, most stores require “dress pants” and have “no jeans to work” policies in place.

      • Lizabeth says:

Agree Nic. The pants don’t need to be jeggings tight to fit properly.

    • Char says:

A duchess for the 21st century.

    • LahdidahBaby says:

      Perfection!

    • RoyalBree says:

Love the look! She looks so great in separates! What a breath of fresh air after that disastrously tight look-at-my-bra dress earlier in the day. Now, could we see some of these pantsuits in different colours for summer? Imagine if she’d done this suit in a cream colour for outdoors? It’d be to die for. Yes, kudos that she seems able to walk on cobbles, grass, and gravel with those spikes. I sure couldn’t.
And best of all, she seems to have got the memo about the constant hair fiddling. I didn’t see any photos at all today of hair fiddling. A HUGE step.

  2. L84Tea says:

    So chic!! She looks amazing!!

  3. LizB says:

ADORE the cropped jacket. I also like her hair being down for this event.

    • Lilly says:

Me too, to both. Also, “BOOOOoooo!” to the Daily Mail. They’re not very subtle and really cater to their commenters, who are full of haters/bigots.

  4. Melissa Melissa says:

This is when she looks best, when it seems like she dresses herself without the opinion of someone trying to Royal her style up. If I wear Meghan, I’d stick with my American chic sportswear as my signature style and a few great bespoke conservative pieces here and there.

  5. Somegirl says:

I like it! I’m always jealous of slim waisted women who can pull of this kind of look. No matter how thin I get, my abdomen always looks weird in slacks.

    • magnoliarose says:

Hmmm…Could it be the waistlines of the slacks? One trick I know of is to take the eye away from that by wearing jewelry, mixing it up with colors and doing monochromatic or at least very very close in tone head to toe. Usually, it is the cut of the slacks and the footwear that make a break them. Once you find the right trick no matter the trends stick with it with minimal updates so as not to look dated.
If you have an afternoon or few go shopping and just try on a bunch of stuff in all price points even things you think won’t work. Then experiment until you find the solution/s. If it is out of your price range you can at least see the lines that suit you best. You can also keep your eye out for that designer on sale online. Sometimes it is a signature and they make the same line season after season.
If you want to splurge on a good pair every year make sure they are classic enough to go the distance. I have a pant problem because of my height and I am slightly short waisted so once I find a design I like to stick with it for awhile. I look like a fool in most capri pants and when they were rocking heels with them it wasn’t pretty. So I waved goodbye enthusiastically when that trend ended.
In my opinion, a good fitting pair of versatile pants is worth spending on whereas a trendy skirt can be cheap as dirt and still fit well. You can work it for a season and not feel bad about letting it go.
One last thing. I know waistlines have risen steadily but higher doesn’t look good on everyone. I am not saying look for hipster pants but look for lower waistlines. They work better for fuller tummies.
Belts and lightweight jackets are great too.

Sorry for the novella. As you can see I have strong feelings about this. lol I believe anyone can wear anything no matter their size, age or figure challenges.

      • Christin says:

Thank you for sharing good tips. I can check off the monochromatic and buying multiples boxes.

Black/dark pants are my staple. I found a great style that fits without looking skin-tight, yet they don’t stretch out during the day. Ordered another pair from BR and discovered there were slight differences in the fabric combinations, even though the name of the pant style was the same.

So, if you find a style that works and decide to purchase another, double-check the fabric content on the tags. It can make a difference.

      • harla says:

I agree magnoliarose! I’ve found that mid-rise pants/jeans work best for my menopause figure. I personally wear a lot of JCrew pants and jeans in the mid-rise and find that they cover the jiggly bits, the straight leg slims my hips and while they’re not cheap, they’re not all that expensive. Personally I think Levi’s make my butt and hips look a bit better but the waist bands tend to be too snug.

      • magnoliarose says:

        🙂
@Christin Yes so much about fabric. I forgot to add that. It can make a difference too.
        @harla
You found jeans! Jeans are tricky too. Another area of finding a brand or two and sticking with them. The inseam can be a problem sometimes.

  6. Clare says:

    She looks sooooooo good!!

But..but..heels on grass is an odd choice.

    • Lightpurple says:

Just asking for a sprained ankle. And heels encrusted with dirt.

      • Clare says:

Not to mention thatbitritatig sensation f sinking into the grass as you walk/stand.

It also ruins the lawn and flooring in old buildings

At least they didn’t make her wear those hideous clear heel stopper things! I’ve been to a couple of receptions in the last few years where they hand ladies wearing spiky heels heel stoppers to protect the floors – particularly in grade 1 listed buildings.

    • TeamAwesome says:

Right? It doesn’t have to be wedges of dooooom, but a cute little flat would be great.

      • DrSnark says:

Same thought. Is there some trick to walking in heels on grass that everyone knows but me?

      • girl_ninja says:

She’s mastering walking on grass in heels tho. She probably doesn’t want to seem like a tiny person next to her very tall husband.

      • Betsy says:

@DrSnark – all the weight on your toes, which is how heels are supposed to be walked in all the time so we don’t clomp around.

      • DrSnark says:

@Betsy well that explains both my clomping and sinking. I think I’ll just stick with flats.

      • FC says:

@DrSnark I ALWAYS wonder how the women at Ascot do it. Surely not everyone is walking only on their toes, right? I’ve tried but look ridiculous.

      • PodyPo says:

With block heels in vogue and readily available, I have bought a few pairs to hold me through when the pendulum swings away again. They are particularly good if she wants the height but not to sink into the lawn. And they look good with trousers like she is wearing here.

    • minx says:

That’s my only hesitation, too. Otherwise she looks perfect.

    • Lizabeth says:

All the ladies in the BRF seem to wear heels on grass at the Ascot and at BP garden parties though. So it’s not an unheard of practice.

    • Karen says:

There is something called soulmates-covers for your heels https://thesolemates.com

  7. Rainbow says:

Minimalist is the way to go for her. This look is a winner!

    • Nancy says:

This is what I said yesterday. It didn’t matter what she wore if she didn’t bring the attitude. She has swag to spare in this outfit. She must know she looks good, because her entire aura is different. This is a win for her.

      • PrincessK says:

@Nancy , you are right it is because apart from the right figure Meghan has the right attitude and aura to be a success in these clothes. I just cannot imagine grungy Cressida or clunky Chelsy looking this flawless, even though they are just as pretty in their own ways.

      • liriel says:

Cressida would find something boho and would give a different aura of confidence. Chelsy would be ill at ease so that’s probably why she isn’t a duchess. Meghan is an actress and it shows. I’m glad she partly ditched the doe eyes and is exuding such confidence.

  8. Aang says:

I know this is what’s done and if she liked bad she’d be crucified but how hard is it to dress yourself? Why do these people need dressers? She is a beautiful woman who looks great with her hair pulled back and wearing well tailored clothes. Doesn’t seem like it takes help to do that. Not criticizing her specifically but the whole idea of it.

    • perplexed says:

Because if one hair is out of place, everybody is going to nitpick (not just her, but anybody who is in the public eye).

    • boredblond says:

Evidently it’s newsworthy every time she changes her clothes..I’m the only one that doesn’t get it..

    • Becks1 says:

I also imagine the dresser does things like make sure the outfits are steamed/pressed, in charge of making sure the stuff all gets there, etc.

      • Betsy says:

That’s the job. Packing with tissue, steaming, emergency hemming and repairs if needed, etc.

      • Who ARE These People? says:

That’s what I think. Packing, cleaning, prepping …. it’s time-consuming and her ‘performance’ is evaluated in part on her appearance. Kate has someone do this, too, as does likely every royal woman – and man! Only with men it’s called a valet, right? They don’t need the hair stylists because they have short hair.

I’d want those 3 staffers too. I’d want someone to prep me for the personnel at every stop – context, history and protocol. If I were paid to do that job, and she is by way of lifestyle support, then I’d need the appropriate staff.

It’s nice to see her without a hat.

      • Jan90067 says:

The dresser also keeps track of what accessories were worn with which outfit each time, so the next time things can be changed up and look fresh.

      • PodyPo says:

Taking the plastic off the bottom of the handbag…

    • Bluthfan says:

She’s paying for the, privately so who cares?

    • magnoliarose says:

Not many people really know how to dress to be photographed. What looks great in person can look like a mess in photos. That is why a star without a stylist can look so wrong so often. The 5 people around them are like You are killing it girl! And the public goes No M’am.
It is embarrassing and can even be humiliating to see yourself looking all happy and smug posing like your life depended on it and then Twitter lights up with the memes. Or an outfit malfunction? PR crisis.
It is easy to look shlubby and unkempt if clothes are tailored correctly when someone is being photographed from every angle. All people should really see themselves from all angles because it may be surprising how horrible something can look from behind.
The photographers are actively looking for flaws to zero in on and we the public notice.

      • Nic919 says:

Why is the cost of a stylist now becoming an issue? Kate had one since day one and no one complained. If anything people were saying the stylist wasn’t doing a good job. Meghan is here to work and so there is no reason for her to have less help as compared to the other royals who work. In fact if Kate is on mat leave she really doesn’t need any help since she isn’t working so maybe she should have lent Meghan her assistants. Why is there staff currently being paid for someone who isn’t working? That seems a waste.

      • Clare says:

@NIC please – people have been composing about how much more net Kate wastes on clothing etc since day one.

It seems Meghan has taken a page out of Kate’s ‘let them eat cake’ book with regards to her approach on spending on clothes. It’s a little dissapoitning tbh.

      • magnoliarose says:

        @Nic19
I don’t know why it should be an issue for any of them. It is part of their job.

The BRF are expensive to maintain. My British cousin was telling me people complained about Diana’s expensive clothes and yet now we tout about how good she looked.

        @Clare
I do hope she shows over time an awareness about costs. I hope she does learn this. Early days yet but it is just a good thing to be aware of.

      • RoyalBree says:

Magnoliarose, replying to your first comment: why did no one tell her about her full bra outline showing through her way-too-tight dress this morning? I was so embarrassed on her behalf I couldn’t even look at all the photos. It’s okay as a street look to have your bra showing, but for a royal it’s a big faux pas. Letizia made the same mistake a few weeks ago with bra and nipples showing. Don’t these royals have mirrors?

      • liriel says:

I totally see your post magnoliarose, it really shows you have an insider info as a model. (Btw, does Kate Moss rarely shows her teeth because she doesn’t like being photographed smiling or because her teeths aren’t hollywood-perfect. for me it gives her authenticity.) Photographers are leeches looking for a mistake yet I still hope Meghan will choose future items smartly, looking at costs (the same goes for bags of course). I have no idea if she like Kate should sometimes wear some local designers. On this I’m torn.

  9. Jess says:

Love her in a pant suit.

  10. Jessica says:

I LOVE a woman in a well-tailored, stylish suit. It ranks among my top five favorite things in this world, probably. She has been on fire with the Dublin looks. It’s like she notched up her post-wedding style game about 20 notches overnight.

  11. OSTONE says:

Oh my God what a girl crush. She looks amazing!! I wish I could pull this look off!

  12. Dazeem, Adele says:

This is the answer to all my BRF fashion dreams!

  13. AnnaKist says:

So unfussy – Meghan looks great!

  14. Belluga says:

    The trousers are back!

I love her duchessing wardrobe. Sleek, minimalist, professional. She’s still finding her feet for royal events, which is understandable, but she’s got the day-to-day work wardrobe nailed. (Which is what I said all along lol! The Firm hasn’t put out her light!)

  15. Sash says:

I honestly love her minimalist style. Just timeless.

  16. Eleonor says:

To me the only thing she does wrong is the make-up, but it’s a minor complaint.

  17. Nancy says:

This is the best look for her. The cropped jacket gives the illusion of long legs. Her hair looks better. Win for Meghan. Harry’s pants are a wrinkled mess. I hate to pick on the dude, but his look reflects upon her. I will give him points for at least color coordinating with her.

    • isabelle says:

She is one of those rare women that can pull off pants much better than dresses/skirts. Pant suits and outfits look good on her, better than dresses IMO.

  18. Bee says:

I really love it when she wears outfits you could actually wear in real life as a normal person.

  19. Hattie says:

Looking beautiful needs to cost thousands and thousand of pounds for one outfit to be worn for a few hours?!? Not one post discusses the cost of her wardrobe. Heels on the grass are a great look. Doesn’t look silly at all.

    • Gigi LaMoore says:

Please stop. Late isn’t always wearing cheap pieces either. Nine of them are.

    • magnoliarose says:

If you are in the BRF apparently it does. Her wardrobe on this tour is full of great repeats for a long time. Plus she is working so I have no issue. She is representing the BRF so should she have worn something from the mall?
There are times when they shouldn’t spend a lot on clothing, should wear repeats and should keep it lower key. Tours aren’t one of them.

      • magnoliarose says:

She can wear the Givenchy teal over and over for years. She can wear the skirt with other tops. She can separate the suit and do the same. She can wear the black dress several times. There isn’t anything she can’t wear over and over. The shoes and handbags are all recyclable.
If she shows that she doesn’t do this I will be right along with others complaining. I do care about the UK taxpayer, not just because I am connected personally but because I see what has been happening with austerity.

      • Sarah says:

I would work 3 days too being driven around and waited on hand on foot if I got 17 grands worth of clothing

    • liriel says:

Exactly, she’s finally a princess and is wearing all these famous, mostly non british designers. She doesn’t care about the public opinion about it at all.

  20. Lara says:

The pictures from this event where one of the children was pulling Harry’s beard. Ovaries exploding everywhere

  21. Dazeem, Adele says:

First comment: sooo glad she’s leaning more into her Suits looks than her Duchess Kate looks.

Second comment: as the previous poster said, when are we going to address the elephant in the room—Harry’s terrible fashions!? It’s time for Meghan to intervene on his behalf. I’m so tired of that rumpled blue suit!!?

    • Nancy says:

I spoke of it above and on another thread. He looks horrible in any shade of blue, period. He looks disheveled and unkept. She must be aware of it. It appears he has never made an effort regarding his appearance. He married a fashionable woman and should do her the honor of at least trying to do better.

      • YankLynn says:

I wonder if Meghan is pretty busy right now just getting her own wardrobe and styling planned and doesn’t have the time to address Harry’s fashion yet. And I say yet because I bet once they catch their breath from the newlywed whirl she will cast an eye on his wardrobe too. Right now they are so googly eyed for each other they aren’t seeing straight 🙂

    • magnoliarose says:

I noticed Harry is not looking as sharp as he should. Are Charles and Phillip the only ones who seem to understand this? I think he needs to catch up because he isn’t used to be on display this much. Something tells me it will be HIM keeping up with her. I don’t think he has a valet like Charles does. I don’t think William does either.

  22. Bluthfan says:

While she is killing this tour with her modern fashion, what is most important are the raves she’s been getting for how engaged and knowledgeable she has been at events. Harry is the only other royal I’ve seen get comments like that.

    • Betsy says:

Of the younger royals, right? I think Chuck and Cams are pretty well engaged, as is Sophie and presumably Edward.

      • magnoliarose says:

Where is Edward anyway? I like Sophie. She seems to be game for it all. Cams is a favorite though. Something very badass about her that I like. Her chutzpah is impressive.

      • Nic919 says:

Edward is busy unveiling plaques. Twitter has a few clips of him having fun with the process.

      • Bluthfan says:

Yeah, younger royals. I don’t pay attention to the older ones. They are boring.

    • Cerys says:

Exactly. Her fashion choices may not be to everyone’s taste but she looks very engaged with the people she meets and shows interest in everything. Harry seems to be the same. The older royals, such as C&C, have this down to a fine art. W&K need a bit more work in this area.
Re her outfit, I loved the trouser and jacket combo. She looked great.

  23. Abby says:

    YESSSS!

  24. Sage says:

That’s my kind of pantsuit. An outfit I would wear to work.

  25. JennL says:

A Givenchy bespoke pantsuit and stilettos to a kids rugby game? Hmm

  26. Case says:

She’s beautiful inside and out. Just watched a short clip of her go out of her way to shake a little boy’s hand. It’s so clear what a personable, lovely woman she is. I really admire her.

    That suit looks awesome.

  27. broodytrudy says:

I’m getting serious bump vibes, y’all.

    • magnoliarose says:

I admit with shame I look at her tummy. I swore I would never be that person but here I am.

      • broodytrudy says:

Oh i don’t see it in her stomach at all, just in her face. She’s got that sort of puffy, not enough sleep/sick look that we all get in the early stages. Not that she looks awful by any means. She just looks a bit off to me.

      • Bettyrose says:

Isn’t it too soon for a bump? No judgment if she got pregnant before the wedding, but I suspect that just isn’t how it’s done in the RF.

      • Lizabeth says:

I don’t see where she could have hidden a “bump” in the teal green outfit.

      • Nancy says:

MagR: I don’t think that’s a baby, but it would be cool if it was. I noticed her behind and stomach in the teal dress seem flattened. Spanx? This poor woman is going to be looked at from every angle no matter what she wears. The pressure on her to get pregnant obviously isn’t what Kate went through. I would think at 36, it is more of an age issue, if they want to have two or three children. What is supposed to happen, will happen!!!

      • liriel says:

I’m the same. It also sucks because they openly stated they wanted a family and the biology is brutal, you have to get started fast because you don’t know how long it takes. If they want 2 it makes it even harder. not to mention 3. That’s why I think Kate’s been really lucky. People thought she was too skinny to have kids yet she gave 3 and in perfect order. In a almost robotic way (showing them off to the public on the day of delivery!)

  28. Grant says:

LOVE IT! What a silhouette! She looks gorgeous.

  29. Flying fish says:

Just like kaiser, I love that she is wearing pants but I dislike the width and length. And, I do not like the short/crop jacket look.
Her hair and makeup is lovely.

  30. Nina says:

I really like that she wore pants. Nice choice.

  31. AG-UK says:

I bet she wished she wore a thicker heel for that football pitch. At least it’s been dry well not sure about there so she won’t sink in.

  32. Bettyrose says:

It was worth the wait to see Meghan step out as a Duchess on tour. She’s rocking every look, chic, professional, and age appropriate.

  33. Merrit says:

Cropped jackets don’t suit her waist.

  34. Maria says:

I like her hair down better, especially with a slight wave. Gives her a softer look. The tight bun parted in the middle makes her look like Wallis Simpson.

    • liriel says:

the side part bun looks effortlessly chic and elegant though.

      • minx says:

The side part bun or chignon is my favorite look for her. She’s so pretty that and that style allows you to see her face and neck. It’s also no fuss, she doesn’t have to touch it or be concerned about it.

      • magnoliarose says:

I love side parts too. They look good on everyone.

      • liriel says:

I see we all agree. It shows off her face, looks classy and is comfortable. Her down she looks gorgeous of course but I like to see her beautiful face. It’s also chic and not so ‘housewives of…’, less hollywood but more French in a great way. When I think about it now the most icons famous for being classy (or literally being upper class) didn’t have this very long, very bouncy hair but either short, up or not made up to perfection.

I wish she would wear less foreign designers and instead wore british designers.

I feel like royals do better oversees. Am I the only one?
I also feel kind of bad that with such trips we have several costume changes, lots to talk about but it’s too much to absorb and then we have a dry spell back home for a while.

    … +1 … completely agree, with whattodonow’s comment.

Fantastic suit! I think I would have liked the jacket a little bit longer over the hip, but that’s a person preference. I wish she had skipped this gray/taupe dress and worn this all day.

I LOVE the suit + hair down. She so insanely pretty. Looks like a barbie doll. Gorgeous smile.

Love the suit. But it makes me sad that tall stiletto heels remain popular with modern women. These beautiful shoes damage our feet, make it impossible to move freely, preclude a quick retreat and are, in short, a symbol of patriarchal oppression. (But they are so sexy! They elongate the leg! They enhance our calf muscles.) I believe feminism means having the freedom to dress as one likes. I just wish these torture devices would go out out like chastity belts and other sartorial symbols of female oppression.

I love everything she has worn on this trip. She definitely has her own look and style, and I’m a fan. As for her Strathberry tote, I went on their web site out of curiosity, and she has obviously done fabulous things for their company. So many styles are sold out, and have a “restocking soon” message. If I could just have her bags I would be in heaven!

  42. PodyPo says:

She looks lovely in the black suit and plain t shirt. I do think she should have worn flats or block heels. If she keeps up the overly expensivecoutfits, even on tour, she will be vilified.

I love this look. She looks super chic and her hair and makeup are perfect too. To the nit pickers who suggest she is under-accessorized may I point out that less is more. Simplicity adds to the elegance.

She can do no wrong apparently but I’m flexible I might not love something but if she looks happy and confident I’m all for it, they bashed Diana mercilessly about her fashion until her death some people just can’t let others live lol
