Kit Harington wants to know when Marvel will hire a gay actor to play a superhero

Kit Harington at arrivals for THE DEATH...

Here are some photos of Kit Harington in Toronto to support his latest film, Xavier Dolan’s The Death and Life of John F. Donovan. Dolan is basically the enfant terrible of North American filmmakers, I think? I mean, you either think he’s a young savant or you think he’s terribly overrated. Well, most critics think he’s terribly overrated, and they think this new film is pretty friggin’ bad. Kit plays a closeted actor who is pen-pals with a little kid. The story is a lot more involved than that, but that’s the basic gist. I guess maybe someone was like “why did Dolan choose sadface heterosexual Jon Snow to play a gay character?” And as a way to deflect, Sadface said words about how more gay actors should be hired to play superheroes.

“Game of Thrones” star Kit Harington addressed queer representation in Hollywood during his visit to the Variety Studio presented by AT&T at the Toronto Film Festival.

“There’s a big problem with masculinity and homosexuality that they can’t somehow go hand in hand,” Harington said. “That we can’t have someone in a Marvel movie who’s gay in real life and plays some superhero. I mean, when is that going to happen?”

[From Variety]

When Henry Cavill exited the Superman role and I was idly thinking about who could take on the role now, you know who came to mind? Matt Bomer, who has been out and proud for many years. He’s been married to his husband for a while and they have a pack of kids. Bomer would be an incredible (and incredibly beautiful) Superman. Bomer would be good at most of these roles though – he would have been good at Captain America, etc. As for Kit saying this specifically… well, wasn’t a gay actor hired to play a gay character again?!?!

Meanwhile, Kit also said words about the final episodes of Game of Thrones. Those words: “I think a TV series that’s spanned eight, nine years is an incredibly difficult thing to end. I think not everyone’s going to be happy, you know, and you can’t please everyone. My favorite TV shows are Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and The Wire, and they all ended in a way that…It’s never going to satisfy you.” I’m starting to get really sad at the thought that literally everyone is going to die on that show and the Night King will be on the friggin’ throne.

I think Matt would be an excellent choice. He has the look that I associate with Superman.

    • Derriere says:

Just went to google pics of Matt, and Kaiser is totally right. The hair, the glasses, the jawline….perfect. lol!

    • Jag says:

Totally agree! I thought someone else should be, but nope, Matt should be the next Superman!

  2. Tania says:

The Knight King currently has his finger on the red button in the oval office, killing many people and denying it. It wouldn’t surprise me if art imitated life in this case.

  3. Kitty says:

I was actually very satisfied with how breaking bad ended…one of the few shows that ended before it got stale and pretty much every story line was wrapped up. Loved it

  4. Tiffany says:

It is a legit question, just not a fan of it being asked as deflection.

Oh, and never forget how Dolan made a very public and kind of mean spirited brewhaha about cutting all of Jessica Chastain’s work from the film. Dolan is getting the reviews he deserves right now.

    • Melissa says:

Wait a minute. Jessica Chastain isn’t in the film anymore? What happened?

      • Tiffany says:

I don’t really know. She filmed her stuff, then there was a poster with her that was released and then he just bragging about cutting her and I guess someone with the film spoke to him about it because he cleaned up his attitude real quick (I don’t think they have distribution yet).

Jessica, for her part, was a pro about it and released a statement on her IG account. Dolan just looked like a douche in the end. It was so bad that he released little snippets of him visited Jacob Tembley’s home to surprise him. A calculated move as far as seeing this computer screen in front of me.

  5. Myrtle says:

I was satisfied with the Breaking Bad ending‚ too. I thought it was perfect. But I’m very, very nervous for GoT ending. Who will die (more like who won’t?) and how much of Westeros will have to burn for that insane legion of White Walkers to be destroyed? Of course dragonglass weapons will help…if every living person from the North on down has plenty of them. But logically, is there really any hope? (Not to mention Maisie’s bloody kicks.) So yeah. I can’t wait for the final season but I’m nervous as hell about it.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

My thin foil tiara theory is that many if not all of the main characters get offed with the exception of Sam (and maybe Sansa and a few others) – I think he’s the chronicler of the story.

      My other theories:
      – Jaime kills Cersei and then sacrifices himself in some sort of heroic way
      – Bran dies after he tries to warg kill the Night King
      – Dany bite’s it in some big battle
      – Jon gets a dragon once its revealed his parentage is revealed, he bites it in some big fashion
      – The Prince that was Promised is revealed and everyone is shocked as its not who they expect i.e. Dany, Jon or Beric. I think we could be blindsided and its Tyrion – I have always felt he has a much bigger role in the overall plot than he currently has
      – The Hound and his monster brother finally square off
      – Arya gets her revenge on those in her list
      – Tormund and Brienne to at least have a kiss (wishfull thinking I know)

  6. Maum says:

Problem with GoT is that last season was glorified fan fiction.
I can’t imagine how they can end it well.

Personally I feel Daenerys (mad Targaryen) and Jon Snow (heroic Stark) should both die and Westeros should go back to the old ways with an independent Stark-led North.
    Can’t see it happening.

  7. FhMom says:

I’m going to hate to see it end, no matter how they end it. Happy, satisfying ending or blood bath, I’ll be sad either way.

  8. Starkiller says:

Why is this blockhead still under the delusion that anyone cares about his opinion? Has he grown tired of crying about how allegedly “attractive” he is?

    • Meganbot2000 says:

Obviously many people do care about his opinions or professional journalists wouldn’t be asking him and then printing them. They wouldn’t be printed in a major magazine if they didn’t sell.

Besides what part of “diversity is good” do you take such objection to?

  9. JayBlue says:

Tessa thompson is gay, or at least bisexual. Not to mention Ian McKellen, Ellen page, Anna paquin, Lee pace.

    • Scarlet Vixen says:

Also, I know it’s DC & not Marvel (the mention of Superman made me want to bring it up) but Ezra Miller who played The Flash in Justice League defines himself as queer.

  10. Nuzzy says:

So, they’ve never cast a gay character as a superhero? That’s so cute… it’s like he thinks they’re all hetero!

Ringlets, lemme e’splain something: there’s this thing called a closet…

A better question is why aren’t there more characters and movies written for gay men? The chance that coming out won’t tank their career of credibly playing hetero archetypes will probably show you that many gay actors and actresses have been cast.

  11. SM says:

Well, maybe he is not the brightest bulb but, I personaly I think that this demand for gay actors to act out the gay parts is insult of a talent. Like gay actors can’t imagine what non gay people’s experiences are and play the part. Like being gay or straight baunds you to inderstand and emphatize only with their “own kind”. I would love to see Matt Boomer playing Superman especially if Zac Snyder is out. I also don’t think that a straight man can’t play gay man. This profession is called acting for a reason. Because otherwise what, only mothers can play mothers, because it’s such a unique experience? How about people with diseases such as HIV or mental illness? I am sure those groups are also inderrepresented in movie industry.
