    She looks so young.

The Party strictly controls all Chinese citizens, including the rich ones. If they don’t play along like Jackie Chan and Jack Ma, then there is hell to pay. Fan Bingbing may have run afoul by not paying her “taxes” (bribes) or she may have tried to defect. We will never know the real story. So much of what we see is the PLA version of a Potemkin village.

So scary. They (Govt) are also doing some pretty crazy stuff to the Muslims in western China right now. The US is taking about sanctions

And they’ve been doing it to the Tibetans and the Mongolians for 50 years. Why does everyone rush to defend the Uigyurs but not the Tibetans, whose religious leaders has been driven out, their demography in Tibetan has been completely changed. Pardon me if I seem antsy, but I feel the world has sacrified Tibet for 50+years for cheap knick knacks in Walmart.

Tibet has suffered and continues to suffer greatly. The Han majority intends to eradicate independent minorities totally. They use the “minority cultural zone” designation as a cover.

        Indian, good point.
I do think Tibet got a lot of publicity. Not saying one is worse than the other and I admit I lost track of what’s happening in Tibet now. but there are some interesting (well upsetting) details about the Uyghurs right now: the Govt forcing people to eat pork and forcing mariages (to non Muslims).
Plus some scary technology with face recognition and installing thing and on their front doors .. it’s quite disturbing

If you can read Chinese, I would really suggest you read the articles online: http://www.soundofhope.org/gb/2018/09/13/n2166558.html

This was posted about 8 hours ago. It’s true she is in trouble for some shady tax evasion but per this article, she is collateral damage. The government is really trying to go after someone she is aligned with. The Chinese translation is the “backstage person.” Whoever the government is targeting, this person is considered wealthy and powerful.

Anyway since the govt controls people’s careers, the article goes on to say her career in show business is pretty much over.

This feels like deja vu. Isn’t this what also happened to Zhang Ziyi? Her career never truly recovered from all that.

      • Holly hobby says:

I don’t know about Zhang Ziyi. The last I heard she got married and had a baby but I haven’t followed her. You may be thinking about Liu Xiao Qing: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liu_Xiaoqing.

She was a real big deal in the 90s. She came up around the same time as Gong Li. She went to jail for tax evasion. I think she was allowed to have a career after she was released from jail because she paid a hefty fine.

Oh my, are you Bostonian readers doing okay? I just saw the news about the explosions!!

Fan Bingbing’s fate is scary – shows that true rule of law and democracy are things that must be fought for…

Tbh, China sometimes sounds like a scary place to live, with all the propaganda and censorship. The stories I read makes it sound like North Korea.
