Ariana Grande released a trailer for ‘thank u, next’: cute or ridiculous?

arianagrandeheader
Ariana Grande is putting out a Mean Girls and general romcom-themed video for her smash hit about getting over a breakup, thank u, next. We know this because she’s been posting stills from the video shoot to her social media. It even features original Mean Girls actor Jonathan Bennett. As part of the hype for the video, Ariana posted a trailer for it. This is a trailer for a three and a half minute music video, which is a concept that makes me roll my eyes. I’m old though, and this isn’t new. We’ve seen trailers for other artists’ videos including Taylor Swift. Here’s the trailer, which opens with comedian Colleen Ballinger in the halls of a high school saying that she got pregnant because she heard a rumor that Ariana was pregnant. There are a few other actors, including an Ariana lookalike, playing high school students, repeating stories about her and admitting to doing stupid things to be like her. There’s swearing if you don’t want your kids or coworkers to hear that.

This is a play on all the hype surrounding Ariana, and how dumb it is, along with contributing to the hype. It’s meta that way and it did work in that we’re talking about it and it got me excited for the video. I wish that we knew exactly when the “thank u, next” video was coming out, but that must be part of the lead up too. The release date of the damn music video will get its own news cycle. That’s how things are now and we’re part of that whole ecosystem. If I didn’t like Ariana so much I would question that more. You know who else I want to see triumph over her personal life like this? Demi Lovato. I want to see her killing it like Ari, but she needs time.

Somewhere in Dubai or Moscow, Lindsay Lohan died after seeing this.

  2. Case says:

A lot of artists put out trailers for music videos now. It’s fun for fans and builds hype. Don’t see an issue with it.

    • Some chick says:

Yeah, I’m thinking, they do the shoot and then the post production stuff takes a while to get it perfected, so why not release some stills or a teaser/trailer?

I’m looking forward to whatever Ari does next. But I still think that someone over at that Cats movie is asleep at the wheel!

  3. Loopy says:

I remember the way Taylor Swift hyped up ‘Bad Blood’ you would think it was going to be the next Thriller or Moonwalk, and it was less than 4 minutes. I dont think its necessary just release the damn video.

  4. Rose says:

This song is awful but everything she puts out is awful so at least she’s consistent.

    • Grant says:

Into You was one of the best pop songs of the year, as was Breathin’. All of her albums are at 70 or above on Metacritic (her most recent, Sweetener, got “universal critical acclaim”) which is huge for a pop artist, so I think you’re alone in that opinion.

    • Christina says:

You’re not alone. I hate most of her music. Breathin’ was ok, the rest is garbage. I don’t know why she is popular.

    • Kayla says:

You’re definitely not alone, I don’t enjoy her music at all. Her voice always sounds so nasally to me.

    • Shannon says:

Not alone. She may be a nice girl, but I have yet to hear one song that I like from her since ‘Focus.’

  5. Winnie Cooper's Mom says:

I want to cringe and roll my eyes… but after everything she’s been through, and bc of the movie nostalgia, I’m admittedly looking forward to the video. She’s cute and I hope she’s learned her lesson with dating a certain type of guy. And +1 on wanting to see big success from Demi when/if she’s ready in the future!

  6. MarcelMarcel says:

The pregnant lookalike is Colleen Ballinger (she’s a successful YouTuber and expecting a child). I’m excited to see this video! because I’ve been wondering when a big pop star will capitalise on YouTube & instagram meme culture with these pop culture references.✨

  7. Memi says:

Am I the only one who thinks this song is really bad?

  8. ChillyWilly says:

So Ariana is 25 years old and wearing a cheer uniform in her video? I like her voice and some of her music, but girrrrl grow up!!

  9. Gaby says:

This is supposed to be inspired by Mean Girls, especially rumors about Regina George, and if I’m not mistaken, that jock is the same actor too? Not sure. I read she is also doing a sort of homage to Bring it On, Clueless and Legally Blonde, therefore, the same looks and people.

  10. ds says:

Stifflers mom! I actually watched Austenland so many times ’cause she cracks me up. Coolidge ftw!

  11. me says:

I heard a Kardashian will be making a cameo in this video, which makes me hate it already.

  12. Otaku fairy... says:

I really hope Ariana and Demi decide to do that duet that Demi says she wants, once Demi is in a place where she feels up to it.

  13. Charfromdarock says:

@DS, I’ve watched Austenland a number of times because of Jennifer C. too’

  14. Lex says:

Love it! It’s cute and fun nostalgia, like Iggy’s Clueless homage.

She is smashing it out of the park – great work Ariana!

I’m a bit sad for the mean girls actors coming back to reprise roles – have any of them done anything since? Oh well…

    Can’t wait!

  15. Ferdinand says:

She’s just basically taking advantage of gay culture to sell more and have a hit.
Just release the damn video and that’s it.

  16. coffeeisgood says:

Clearly you are not a Mean Girls fan.
