Amal Clooney wore J. Mendel & criticized Donald Trump’s anti-press fascism

Amal and George Clooney exit Cipriani's after having dinner with Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres

George and Amal Clooney stepped out in New York last night for the 23rd Annual United Nations Correspondents Associations (UNCA) Awards. They were joined by George’s parents. The Clooney family came out to support Amal, because she received the UNCA’s Global Citizen of the Year Award. Since it was her night, Amal wore a new frock – a navy and cream J.Mendel gown and NO coat. It’s very cold in New York at night, isn’t it? It’s freezing down here in the mid-Atlantic, I guess I just assumed it was freezing in New York as well. Still, Amal has shown time and time again that she’ll do anything for THE LOOK.

I honestly had a moment of “why is the UNCA honoring Amal, a lawyer, this year?” But then I remembered that she’s taken on several cases involving press freedom, and journalists being imprisoned for trying to shed light on dictatorships, fascist governments, etc. Amal’s speech was about press freedom too:

As the event’s Global Citizen of the Year honoree, the international human rights lawyer gave an impassioned speech about the threats to the safety of journalists, citing specific cases of imprisonment in Myanmar and by “autocratic regimes” around the globe. She then brought up Trump, accusing him of emboldening others to attack the press.

“The U.S. president has given such regimes a green light and labeled the press in this country the enemy of the people,” the Lebanese-British lawyer told the crowd gathered in New York City, alluding to his frequent condemnation of “fake news” and insults aimed at news outlets like CNN. Clooney referred to the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi two months ago at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

[From Yahoo]

Yes, pretty much. Wasn’t it established, weeks ago, that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman only felt like he had the greenlight to have Khashoggi murdered because he knew, from Trump’s fascistic anti-press rhetoric, that the American government would do nothing in response? Trump’s anti-free-press stance has had a chilling effect not only on American media outlets, but international media and foreign journalists too.

I wish Meghan Markle and Amal Clooney would become best friends and take over the world.

  2. Maya says:

Beautiful dress and well done Amal for the award.

    • Pandy says:

Yes, she looks fantastic! I would have strutted into the building without a coat as well if I looked like that lolllll. I’m sure they had heat lamps outside anyway.

      • Lilly (with the double-L) says:

@Pandy ha ha. I lived in Alaska for awhile and once went out for an occasion with heeled open-toed shoes and one of my friends was horrified and said: “What do you care about? Looks or comfort?” It’s clear what my answer was and they immediately shrugged, both from that’s me and, yes, they’d do the same.

      • Pandy says:

@Lilly – it’s fun until you lose a toe or finger ha ha ha …. a girl’s gotta do what she’s gotta do!

    • rainbow says:

Yes, I love that she won this award. She looks gorgeous. Brains and beauty! We need more of it in this superficial celebrity world.

  3. LT says:

Beautiful dress! I just got back from NYC – it was indeed freezing. I was wearing gloves and a scarf and some of the New Yorkers were dressed like they were heading to the tundra. She must have been freezing.

  4. Betsy says:

She’s not wrong. I forget sometimes in just seeing her here, but she’s an accomplished, very intelligent woman. She’s done some things I disagree with (representing some people I strongly disapprove of, I think) but overall she’s a good person.

Poor fit on the gown. And frankly I wish women could go back to seasonally appropriate dresses.

    • Esmom says:

I’m glad she spoke out against one of the most disturbing and distressing aspects of the Trump age to me, the demonization of the press.

I agree that her gown fits badly, it need major hiking up. It’s pretty, but I think something with sleeves would have been nice for Dec.

George looks a bit haggard to me under his tan.

      • ItReallyIsYou,NotMe says:

Agreed. George “married up,” not the other way around.

      • Kaye says:

It needs a hoik, as the Fug Girls would say.

      • rainbow says:

Oh, indeed. I always say George married up and Amal married down!

      • Lady2Lazy says:

I agree. I am so sick and tired of his constant temper tantrums on anything that puts him in a bad light. His dictator type behaviour should strike a cord with all Americans as to how dangerous he is and how willing he is to destroy people’s lives and our standing in America. I think the latest FBI has reported a increase of 17% in 2016, with most of those primarily occurring after Drumpf was elected. We are a country at war with ourselves and we can thank Drumpf for that. In regards to POC, I fear for every single one of them. I hope that we get back to respecting each other’s differences again.

  5. Goldengirlslover34 says:

She must have thick skin because it is freezing in NYC! I’m dressed like I’m about to battle Jack Frost. She doesn’t even look cold!

  6. Belle Epoch says:

    George is looking rough!

Are there pictures of the twins?

    • heylee says:

My husband is a physical therapist and so we have conversations about posture and what it can mean in terms of pain and/or maladaption. George’s posture, IMO, is screaming that he is in all sorts of pain and having some postural adaption as a result 🙁

      • Esmom says:

Yeah, his body language indeed screams pain to me and I am just a layperson. 🙂

      • Lilly (with the double-L) says:

@heylee thanks. I love the things I learn here and I’m gonna use “postural adaption” into the first conversation I can work it into. But, I’m sorry George and I hope these are things he can ameliorate.

    • Gina says:

I know, he looks very sore. :'( I thought he was Amal’s Dad when I looked earlier at the pics on my mobile. Not overly keen on Amal’s dress, brrrr…. maybe I’m a prude, but I think this is more Hollywood Film Celebrity Awards not so much Humanitarian Global Citizen Award.

  7. Nikki says:

I loved her dress until I saw the top details. I find the little strings across the bust, combined with the spaghetti straps, make the top half look like an old fashioned bathing suit. But good for her, for all the work she’s doing.

  8. Emmet says:

How much did George pay for this award?

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

      Wow.
Because she has zero accomplishments, huh.

    • Jaded says:

Believe me, Amal has never had to rely on a man to buy her accomplishments.

    • Foxtrot says:

The Clooney name opened a lot of doors for her and George loves it because *rubs hands* political-run announcement is getting closer every day. I find them extremely contrived. And as someone with a legal background myself, I’m well aware she would never be asked to give commencement speeches, attract certain high-profile clients on her own name (at this early stage of career), or win these random awards without the high profile her marriage gave her. Don’t get me wrong; she’s successful lawyer but still a fairly junior one and there are people at an earlier career stage than her who are genuinely decorated and more qualified and accomplished. Those high-profile clients pre-George, clients so often cited by Clooney PR as Amal’s clients, were really her firm/chamber’s clients and she’d have been asked to assist by the senior lawyers (Robertson, for example) leading the case, not approached by the client directly. And she’d have been one lawyer among probably at least six on the team, whilst the Enron case would have had an even bigger team.
She makes a good point here, but these two are part of the pseudo left as they rarely link cause with effect. e.g., For all their refugee advocacy, they – without a word of qualification or criticism – supported a certain war hawk who played a big part in destablising the ME, empowering ISIS, and triggering refugee crises. George has a vague idea he’s on the “good guys'” side, but never talks about income inequality. These two would be as vacuous in politics as they are now. They will talk about the culture wars and civil liberties but never addressing underlying issues like the uncomfortable questions of immigration (unskilled immigration does impact the poor), economics, aggressive foreign policies and so on. Limo liberals, 100%.

      • Emmet says:

        Fake marriage.
        Staged photo ops.
        Paid for awards.

      • rainbow says:

“as they rarely link cause with effect.” Excuse me? Have you seen what their foundation has achieved? Your first paragraph describes the role of a junior barrister, which is what she is. No out of the ordinary at all. Yes, this high profile publicty has come about because of the marriage, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t a successful barrister/lawyer beforehand.

      • Foxtrot says:

Rainbow, didn’t I say she’s successful (junior) lawyer?!
“Have you seen what their foundation has achieved?”- Clooney is the epitome of very old-fashioned concept called noblesse oblige. In other words, keep things as they are, with no real change for the people who are really in pain (bottom 20, 30 percent or so), but engage in a bit of charity and advocacy to show we really, really care. People like Mike Bloomberg (not saying his policies are perfect) give big but never misrepresent what charity budgets are; he talks about how it’s vital to work through the public sector / government budgets, which is thousands of times the scale of non-profits. (If interested, look up the NYT interview, Private Citizen Bloomberg on Philanthropy.) Clooneys are poseurs with no real substance yet act like they’re saving the world with their foundation.

    • rainbow says:

What a horrible thing to say. She was accomplished before George, ya know.

  9. Kitten says:

She looks radiant. Nice that she was honored for her work.

  10. adastraperaspera says:

Congratulations to Amal! It’s so important that people publicly criticize Trump. Seems like many powerful people are afraid to take a stand, and in the meantime so many journalists are being killed. Wiki lists 21 journalists who have been killed by Putin. That’s just one authoritarian–think of how many others in the world we don’t know about! I’m married to a lawyer, so we’re team Rule of Law around here. Amal getting this award fills me with hope.

    • Nikki says:

Thank you for your wonderful comment. Wish more people would publicly stand up to Trump.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I’m really glad that she is using her time at the microphone to shine light on such important issues. Freedom of the Press is so critical for democracy, and it is under attack all around the globe. Trump has really given strong men the green light to act without consequence.

  11. Svea says:

Gotta feel for George Clooney. He was already a sufferer of chronic pain before he had that scooter accident in Italy. Looks like that only exasperated the situation. Nothing ages you like pain and on him it shows. Chronic pain is a nightmare.

    • Renee2 says:

      Yes,

I was just thinking that by the time he is considered to be old, perhaps in 10-15 years, he is going to be really stooped. I feel badly for him, apart from the chronic pain Hollywood doesn’t make space for disability.

  12. Barrett says:

Smart women. Fashion Nut! Freezing here, I’d respect her work and intelligence if she combined the dress w a wrap or sleeves.

???? Remember her yellow dress w train in Cannes that everyone Tripped over. George always looked so proud but like her dad or olde uncle! Men!

  13. Shelley says:

She is just stunning. I hope George is ok.

  14. vegasschmegas says:

Props to her for speaking out. I hope she has bodyguards – I put nothing past Mango Mussolini and his thugs. From looking at the folks surrounding them, I’m sure they do.

  15. Jayna says:

    Very important words ftom Amal.

She looks beautiful. I miss seeing Amal. She is the only person out there who mixes it up, and I always look forward to seeing what she is wearing.

  16. Alyse Leitao says:

To learn more about the Saudi situation, I highly reccommend watching “Patriot Act” on Netflix.

Great info and insight into the situation in a an easy to understand and entertaining format.

plus 100% here to support Hasan Minhaj!
