Cardi B wore vintage Thierry Mugler, won the Grammy for Best Rap Album

61st Annual Grammy Awards

Cardi B was one of the biggest deals at last night’s Grammys – she had gotten five nominations (including Album of the Year for Invasion of Privacy) and she took home one Grammy, for Best Rap Album. She was actually the first solo female artist to win Best Rap Album, so good for her. She was thrilled, and she really wanted to win something. She also paid tribute to Mac Miller in an Instagram just after she won.

Cardi arrived on the red carpet wearing a vintage gown/ensemble by Thierry Mugler. Like, this was pulled out of Mugler archives – it’s a look that’s supposed to represent a modern Venus, or the pearl in the oyster. Or something. I was totally fine with this look – it’s the Grammys, and she was having fun. Offset was with her on red carpet, and there were cutaway shots to him during her performance and all of that. They’re fully back together.

Also: I was sort of underwhelmed by Cardi’s live performance of “Money.” I think it’s because I don’t think that’s her strongest song? But I have to give it to her – she turned a very sleek, professional performance. She rehearsed that sh-t and you could tell. That’s what I kept thinking about everything regarding Cardi: she’s ready, and she’s a total pro.

The red carpet outfit — just NO.

    • ByTheSea says:

I can’t get into it or her. And Offset is just a no for me. Blatant disrespect and cheating when she wasn’t “on” but wanting her back now when her career is on fire.

  2. Charlie says:

I’m loving Cardi’s champagne pop! What a great, over the top, moment.

    • Earthbound Misfit says:

Yeah, but if 1995 is “vintage,” I’m fccked.

    • Lexilla says:

I don’t know her music that well but I love that we have Cardi in this life. What a fun red carpet moment. Note to Gaga’s egg or pod or whatever from years ago: this is how you do it.

  3. Elsie says:

    They look so tacky.

  4. Char says:

    Cardi in Mugler is fire!!

I love her so much! I loved her speech! She is so charming to me

    • Diana says:

Me too! She is my favorite celebrity these days. Just charming as hell!

Me too…until yesterday! I worked with a wonderful makeup artist this weekend who told me that Cardi was absolutely DISRESPECTFUL, rude, and terrible to her. Apparently, about 6 months ago, she came to set 2 hours late. When she arrived, she looked this makeup artist up and down (the mua is a large woman) and said, “f#ck no, she ain’t touchin me”. The mua quickly replied, “then get the f#ck up out of my chair.” Handlers ran in and were like, she is great, and who we have here to do your makeup. Again, Cardi repeated the same thing, “this bitch ain’t touchin my face.” And this mua told her again, “then get the f#ck out of my chair.” They explained that Cardi was already late and they were behind schedule and that they’d have to just use this hired mua. At this point, the mua said, “I’m not working with this bitch.” They asked what she’s need to stay, she said double pay, they agreed. She did Cardi’s face, and as soon as the makeup was done, homegirl was all on IG SCREAMING about how beautiful she looked, and telling everyone that the makeup artist was her girl, and how everyone should “use her” for their makeup.

This wonderfully talented woman said it stings everytime she turns on the radio. She said being disrespected and judged by someone you previously admired is really hard and she’s taken back to those feelings everytime she remembers how excited she was going into the job, and what transpired during it.

I love Cardi (at least her public persona) but I can’t say I’m surprised. I grew up in the same building that Cardi’s ex-boyfriend grew up in in Harlem and let’s just say that where I grew up is not a place where class, sensitivity or even gratitude are emphasized…

Unfortunately, this is not the first story I’ve heard like this from an MUA. There was another woman on YouTube last year who had a horrific story about Cardi berating her, disrespecting her and ultimately not paying her for a job she flew out to do. Then Cardi went on IG live to address it and began immediately exhibiting all of the behaviors the MUA had mentioned were the start of their problems (Cardi moving erratically and constantly getting in the way of her MUA… refusing to hold still, stop talking or put her phone down during applications of things like eyeliner and lipstick). Also, I’ve lived in the Bronx for most of my adult life and let’s just say this doesn’t exactly surprise me. Between the fighting with MUAs and her taking her cheating husband back… Idk, there’s a lot of classic bird behavior going on there. I was rooting for Cardi in the beginning, and I guess I still am… but some of her shine has worn off for me. 🤷🏼‍♀️

This would only be acceptable at the Grammys, I kinda loved it even tho she clearly couldn’t walk in it since the bottom was SO tight

Love her tho and I am happy she won but I wish she would have gone on stage on her own. I think a few years from now she might regret having him on stage during HER moment

  7. Erinn says:

LOL that photo where he’s just standing there with his hand out for her to hold while she leans towards him is great. He can’t even get very close to her if he tried based on the size of the gown.

And I don’t really dislike the gown – I think it’s wacky, but it’s kind of just fun.

  8. Sash says:

    Vintage Mugler?? Go on, Cardi!

  9. Nlopez says:

She looked fabulous in that white dress. Glad she won!

  10. Lizzie says:

her stupid husband needs to get out of the shot.

    • BlueSky says:

He was acting like he didn’t want to get out of the shot. I really do think he is jealous of all the attention she’s getting now.

  11. EMc says:

She was so shocked, I honestly thought she might be having a panic attack on stage. She kept saying she couldnt breathe and I was genuinely concerned for her, lol. Cardinal earned it, go on girl!

  12. FredsMother says:

Could Ms. Cardi not find a better accessory than that man? He totally ruins her look.

  13. Naddie says:

    I like it, it’s fun.

  14. Tootsie McJingle says:

It kind of looks like she accidentally put her dress on upside down but was too embarrassed to admit it so she just went with it.

  15. isabel says:

I felt like she shaded Offset a bit on stage when she said “and you, husband, thank you” at the end of her speech…her tone killed me and I burst out laughing.

  16. Jen says:

I actually thought the performance was one of her weaker ones and I love Cardi-did anyone else think she needs to be more discreet with the lip syncing?

  17. BearcatLawyer says:

I adore Cardi B for many reasons, and I love this Mugler look on her. But can we talk for a minute about how her makeup is always so flawless?

  18. Veronica says:

That dress is perfect for Grammy’s. It’s totally ridiculous but very fun – just right for her outlandish personality and a show that demands more whimsy in the fashion.

  19. Case says:

Cardi seems like a total sweetheart. I’m glad she won last night. But did anyone think it was weird that Offset stayed on-stage with her in the camera’s view? It’s lovely to help her up the stairs, but beyond that he should’ve stepped to the side and given her that moment.

  20. NWRose says:

Shes a pro in many ways. Just sayin 😉

  21. Mle428 says:

I think she is so stunning. Such a unique beauty. Also I love her album.

  22. Yes Doubtful says:

I dig the outfit! I’m so happy she won a Grammy. Somewhere out there, Nicki Minaj is having a meltdown over it… hahahaha But really, Cardi’s album was great. Every song was a potential hit single.

  23. JRenee says:

    I actually like the performance.

  24. Sunnyjyl says:

So happy for Cardi B. Way to go, babe!

  25. A says:

    Cardi B looks gooood.

  26. Susan says:

She does not deserve that Grammy – the album was rubbish with only one notable song. The Grammys should be scrapped since they are just dishing out awards based on personality and not music
