Duchess Meghan wears Erdem for a trip to Canada House on Commonwealth Day

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attend an event at Canada House

Today is Commonwealth Day in Great Britain, and the royal family’s two greatest commonwealth ambassadors were out and about today to mark the occasion. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited Canada House in London. They met with young Canadians living in London, and they also did a photo-op where they learned how to make maple taffy.

For Commonwealth Day – and a day focused on British-Canadian relations – Meghan chose to wear a Canadian designer, because she’s that good! Meghan wore this embellished green Erdem coat which is very cute. My first thought was “that’s kind of heavy and Christmas-y for March” but then I remembered that St. Patrick’s Day is coming up. Many people will be wearing green this month. She paired her Erdem coat with her favorite Aquazzura heels and a Givenchy clutch.

Hello Mag had a photo of this Erdem coat on the runway, and now I’m not even sure that Meghan really had it altered? Erdem designed it to be roomy and boxy, almost like it was meant to be a maternity coat. Hm.

    Meghan looks great!
Omg did you see royaldish has banned all talk of harry and Meghan. 😂😂😂

Two of the most popular royals cant even be talked about on a royal forum.

    • LahdidahBaby says:

      Why?

      • Guest says:

I guess because it got to be “too much.” I dont see why since everyone that liked meghan left the boards and they all shared the same opinion on her. She was all they talked about.
We’ll see how long it lasts, meghan loves to work and is fixing to have a new royal baby. They be missing out on a lot of things 😏

      • Princessk says:

Probably because they are afraid of being accused of trolling and don’t want to get the whole site shut down because the Palace at last has decided to step in and take action on the attacks against Meghan.

    • Becks1 says:

      What?? That seems crazy.

I went over to royaldish a few months ago. Too many rules. Too many sub boards and sub groups etc. I lasted for like 5 minutes lol.

      • line says:

You better not read the comments on Royal Dish ,it’s just a horrible forum. In 2 min of navigation I read that how Michelle Obama is a man, the princess charlotte suffer to Down syndrome and the Duchess sussex had taken pornographic pictures.

      • Jan90067 says:

I went over there a few times for Kate and the kids, and then for Meghan, but damn, the overt racism, couched in “I’m not a “sugar”…” crap just was too much for me. Reminded me of that song from “The Music Man”: “Pick a Little Talk a Little”. All the old racist biddies viciously picking her apart. Too much for me. I left and never looked back.

Love this coat and color on Meghan, but *hate* the embellishments. I think they look like globs of tar. But I love the swing coat style, and that’s my favorite shade of green! Hair and makeup look lovely. She really does glow in her pregnancy!

    • Beli says:

Thank goodness. Some of them over there were getting scary.

      • emerson says:

if you have the courage (and a little sanity to spare) take a look into the crazy world of royalgossip. these people are an entire dumpster fire ( i.e. if meghan doesn’t get her way she’ll start a race war)

      • Beli says:

Thanks for the recommendation, but I really think my life would be better if I pretended that didn’t exist!

    • vava says:

I’ve never read the Harry and Meagan threads on Royal Dish, but this doesn’t surprise me. I stick to commenting on Kate only. The moderator over there is really biased, plays favorites, picks on people unnecessarily, and doesn’t abide by her own rules. It’s like walking through a mine field with her around.

      • 10KTurtle says:

It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who thinks that! She really snaps on some people, while others write the same things. It’s “too much trouble” to moderate the Sussex forums, but meanwhile it’s HATE ALL DAY EVERY DAY on Crown Princess Mary’s forums (and Mette-Marit’s too, although less since she got diagnosed recently). Sometimes I go on there with a positive comment just to try to change the atmosphere (and people swerve on around me as if I never existed).

      • Blacksheep says:

HAHAHAHAHA the irony of your statement is hilarious

      • 10KTurtle says:

Calm down, I mean that I created an account last year JUST to try to turn the tide. Unfortunately, as I said before, most of those posters are not there for that.

    • Jan says:

I saw and laughed. They were getting absolutely out of control over there, with the rampant speculation, conspiracy theories, linking to some really scary problematic websites and the casual racism (which they swore up and down wasn’t racism but them not being “sugars”).

Meghan looks great here, just wish she’d pull the collar of the coat down. Her makeup looks beautiful, she’s glowing and the extra weight she’s carrying in her face really suits her.

      • KNMC says:

What on earth are “sugars?” Do I even want to know?

      • jan90067 says:

KNMC, “sugars” are what they call people who are fans, or who say “nice” things about whomever they’re writing/talking about.

    • mazzie says:

Really? Wow, I’m genuinely surprised they did. I thought they were enjoying their low key racism disguised as just dishing.

    • LivePlantsCleanAir says:

Never heard of The Royal Dish, so obvs don’t care…can’t remember where i was when I read this, but I read somewhere that folks ‘out there’ think we are cruel to Duchess Kate and we think that Duchess Megan can do no wrong. I was shocked, shocked I say, that there are folks out there that think we’re biased….have they not read us properly? Do we not give Kate a hard time about buttons, yes, yes we do. Do we not give Meghan a hard time about over-achieving with the bronzer? Why yes, yes we do! Where’s the bias? I’ve only ever seen pretty even-handed comparisons, but mostly, I see folks here demanding the comparisons stop. Where’s the bias? Huh, Celebitchy haters…..seems like an oxymoron to me….

    • When Harry and Meghan first got engaged someone here referred to RD, so I went over to check it out. I didn’t stay for long, but at that time they had just shut down commenting on Harry and Meghan. People were in the Kate threads complaining about not having anywhere to criticize Meghan.

So this isn’t the first time they’ve shut down the H&M commenting section for its toxicity. I’m glad to read they don’t allow comments anymore because that place is awful, but I have a feeling this won’t last, unfortunately. The whole site should be shut down, they’re horrible to everyone they talk about, I don’t think it’s healthy.

Meghan looks great, I love this green on her and she’s glowing.

    • Ina says:

I’ve been to RD a few times and the comments on Meghan were vile and cruel and the conspiracy theories loony at best. Very painful to read so it’s about time they shut it down.

The deep green looks fabulous on Meghan. The contemporary style of this “coat + dress” is a win IMHO.

  2. Sara says:

    She looks so stunning.

    • Yup, Me says:

She is gorgeous but that coat looks drips of cooled lava on astroturf.

    • jan90067 says:

Meg changed into a cream Victoria Beckham for the church service with the Queen; added a pillbox hat (shades of Jackie K!). Not loving this look. Kind of matronly; reminds me of a nurse. Her face/makeup/hair look gorgeous though!

Kate is repeating the red coat and dress she wore to the Australia visit, the one that she wore getting off the plane (carrying George). BUTTONS!! 😊

For both ladies, jewel tones are their friends!

      • Becks1 says:

I just don’t like pillbox hats basically on anyone besides Jackie O lol. But besides that I really love Meghan’s look for the service.

I wonder if that was the coat that started the button commentary on here lol. It would be funny to look back and see at what point did Kaiser realize that Kate doesn’t just like buttons…..she NEEDS buttons 😉

I do like seeing Kate in color though. Like you said, jewel tones. Reds, greens, blues – she looks really good in them. When she goes for those shades of pale gray or pale blue/ minty etc – those usually end up being my least favorite looks of hers overall as I look back.

      • BeanieBean says:

I love love love Meghan’s second outfit today.

      • TeamAwesome says:

She looks like she’s just off the set from Call the Midwife. I can’t decide if I like it or not, but she looks happy for someone that got sat next to Andrew.

      • Yami says:

She looks like a beautiful nurse and that’s just fine with me. At the church service I mean.

      • The amount of money Meghan’s clothes cost is heavily emphasised in the coverage given to her events. Its a lot I agree, but if it is a “first year, building a wardrobe” outlay, it makes sense. There seems to be a severe lack of advice given to (or accepted by!) the younger royals – but perhaps someone should sit Meghan and Harry down, and insist that the hugely expensive maternity clothes be adapted for future use. Its time for some positive PR.

      • AG-UK says:

That white hat reminds me of those old
Fashioned nurses hats. Jackie O was the only person for me who could wear that type maybe because she had short bob type hair.

  3. LahdidahBaby says:

    Love it. LOVE it!

  4. Becks1 says:

I like this, I think. I like the color a lot, her hair looks great, and I still love those shoes. The material looks a bit heavy and I don’t love the embellishments, but overall I like it. Hello! describes it as a Jackie O look and I definitely get a 60s vibe here.

    • broodytrudy says:

Yes! I LOVE all of the green I’ve been seeing on her and Kate lately. It’s such a gorgeous, underutilized color with shades for everyone to look fabulous in.

  5. Florianight says:

This coat is hideous & doesn’t do her any favors. The fitting is completely off to the point it looks sloppy.

    • Flying fish says:

I agree. She is such a beautiful woman. But this coat is a fail.

      • Megan says:

Meghan’s hair and make up look lovely, but the fabric of her coat reminds me of a sofa my great aunt had in the 1960s. It’s nice that she wore a Canadian designer, but Erdem is always so over worked and over done.

    • Tanguerita says:

thank God i am not the only one who thinks that this coat should be burned.

      • Clare says:

Agree – hate the coat. Love the shoes, though.

      • Julianne says:

It’s bad. Bad fabric, fit, color, the works. I do love the shoes though.

      • Olenna says:

Agree; just burn it. It’s not even a great vintage look. The color is nice, but the embellishments, fabric texture and weight are awful. The shoes are gorgeous, though.

      • Redgrl says:

Yeah, don’t like the coat apart from the colour. The whole commonwealth thing gives me an odd feeling though. As a Canadian, I truly believe when the Queen passes we need to sever ties with the monarchy. I respect the Queen but can’t see us paying homage (or paying taxes for their visits) for any of them after that. They can continue their good works in England and where ever else wants to keep them, but for Canada I think it’s enough and the time has come.

      • Tourmaline says:

It looks like it might be made of asbestos, so I vote no to burning

    • Lexa says:

Yeah, the fabric is especially questionable to me. It almost looks like carpet or some sort of green insulation. I also don’t like the way the collar looks in the back—it makes it seem like she needs to tug it down and forward so it hugs her neck.

She does seem to be loving the 50’s pregnancy throw back style and this fits into that.

    • KidV says:

As bad as it looks, it looks 100x better on a pregnant Meghan than it did on the runway model.

I don’t hate this style, I just don’t like material and the applique looks like melted crayons.

    • Beth says:

Thought I might be the only one that disliked it. The old lady coat looks like it’s made with cheap material, the collar looks uncomfortable, those sequins embellishments look tacky, and except for the color, it’s a total failure

    • minx says:

It’s ugly and again, it doesn’t fit properly

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

Yes, thank you — “hideous” was the first word that came to mind. The color is hideous, the cut is bad, the proportions are bad, and it looks like a pterodactyl crapped on it. Just burn the d@mn coat, and let us never speak of that thing again.

  6. Jessica says:

She looks incredible, these photos are so nice!

  7. Enn says:

I liked it better when I thought the accents were embroidery, not sequins. The color is beautiful.

I really do love those shoes though!

  8. s says:

Minus the embellishments the coat is super cute. But, heck, it’s Erdem and he never saw an embellishment or bedazzlement that he didn’t like so I suppose it’s par for the course.

  9. Erinn says:

She’s stunning, but this coat is so bad. It’s reading really old lady to me. Like… make it brighter and the queen would probably happily own it. It’s all the embellishments that really make it ugly to me, but that’s just my opinion. It’s also weird how far back on her the collar is sitting, isn’t it?

The color is nice on her, makeup is good, hair is good, and she’s got a great smile. But I want to burn the coat.

  10. Junebug says:

Plus it’s very cold and windy today, so a heavy coat is just the ticket.

  11. Monicack says:

Really like. Almost love but I don’t like where the sleeve stops. If it’s cold enough for a heavier fabric then don’t add on 3/4 sleeves. Pet peeve of mine. Gorgeous styling and hair though.

    • BeanieBean says:

I think the last time this coat style was in fashion, it was accompanied by a longer glove, thus keeping the wearer warm. But I agree–I remember thinking the same thing when watching the old I Love Lucy series. Why wear a coat with short sleeves?

  12. Beli says:

The colour is lovely and for an Erdem I’m just relieved it doesn’t have the usual dust ruffle! That material does look heavy, so no risk of skirts flying in the wind, but I’m not sure about the embellishments and collar yet.

    She is glowing though.

  13. .whatever1 says:

Old lady vibes .. this outfit is straight out of the Queen Mother’s closet.

  14. Abby says:

that glow is real……i just have one prayer,i need to be this radiant pregnant

  15. Astrid says:

    Love the shoes!

  16. Dee says:

I’m suffering from serious coat envy! And shoe envy! And ankle envy!

  17. tempest prognosticator says:

She looks so lovely in jewel tones. But more importantly… maple taffy? How have I lived this long and not heard of this? Should I try it?

    • Cdine says:

It’s just maple syrup on snow, a Quebec speciality. It’s fun for about 10 seconds.

      • Bee says:

I guess if you’re eating it by yourself…this is also a speciality in Vermont and we have large sugaring parties with all of your family and friends. You boil the syrup down to a thicker candy consistency and eat it on snow and with homemade donuts. It’s a beautiful and delicious way to celebrate the end of a tough winter and the beginning of spring.

      • TeamAwesome says:

Do they chase it with a pickle in Quebec?

      • Erinn says:

It’s bigger in Quebec than Vermont, Bee. Something like 70% of the worlds maple syrup is coming out of Quebec. Super common during festivals, but there’s sugar cabins dedicated to it.

I think the pickle thing is a weird New England thing. I’m not opposed to trying it though, but only because I like Dill pickles.

I feel like it’s one of those things that if you grow up somewhere where it’s a big deal, and you’re not IN LOVE with maple syrup, it’s going to get old quick.

    • Redgrl says:

It’s maple syrup on snow (or a variation of thinner or thicker maple syrup sometimes). It’s popular in Quebec (where the majority of the world’s maple syrup comes from) and Ontario. Pour hot maple syrup on snow and you take a popsicle stick and wrap the hardening maple syrup around it as it cools. It’s fabulous. What’s also fun is going to a maple sugar bush and drinking the maple sap out of the buckets – it’s delicious. Then you snowshoe through the forest as the snow falls to work up an appetite. Then you have a meal of eggs, bacon (with maple syrup) fried potatoes, maple ham, maple cake or pudding, and, of course, maple whiskey.

      • sunny says:

This is my childhood 100%. We used to take field trips to the sugar shack all the time when I was a kid. (I grew up on the border of Ont and Quebec)

  18. Rhys says:

Don’t like the silly coat but she looks stunning and her work ethic, and enthusiasm are so wonderful to see!

  19. Silas Marner says:

It is a flattering color but this coat material looks like astroturf. It reminds me of Kate’s green muppet dress.

It is Meghan’s body and her choice to mostly avoid maternity clothes but simply wearing bigger sizes is unflattering.

  20. Cerys says:

I like this outfit. The gap in the collar at the back would irritate me but that is just my personal preference. I think it is appropriate for a relatively formal royal event and the length etc is just right. Meghan looks glowing too.

  21. Sparkly says:

I don’t know how people can insist that she’s faking her pregnancy. She’s carrying in her face as much as her stomach. Of course, it softens her look and she positively glows, gorgeous and regal. When I get pregnancy face, I look like Lisa the Gnome.

  22. Sue Denim says:

She looks radiant — love the shoes and purse, and the cut and color of the dress and coat, but not the texture or embellishments, it is v Jackie O tho!

  23. s says:

Overall this is one of her better looks even if it is not my personal taste – good color, overall good fit, appropriate for the event and good length. That being said, I think it looks way better in the pictures where the coat is unbuttoned.

  24. Kaylah says:

I don’t like the coat. I see why she prefers the open coat look. A fully buttoned coat while pregnant is not the greatest look.
The color is gorgeous on her though.

  25. Seraphina says:

Love this outfit and her entire look. The color is gorgeous. She hit it out of the ballpark. Way to Megs. Well played!

    • Ahoyoy says:

This is so gorgeous. The shape and color of the coat are amazing. I love the embellishments on it too. The fit on Meghan is impeccable. It looks so lush. I think Meghan has finally redeemed Erdem after the way Kate has cheapened his brand with all of the terrible schmatta-y looks she’s worn. I would buy this coat in a heartbeat.

  26. HeyThere! says:

Yay for no heavy handed blush!!! Makeup looks great! Love the shoes.

  27. Zazu says:

Love that color of green on her! I read somewhere that one of the Canadian staff told Harry and Meghan that they hoped the day would remind them of happy times in Canada when Meghan live there and that Canadians feel a special claim on them. It made me chuckle because us Canadians are not really flag-waving patriots but there does seem to be a special interest and excitement whenever Meghan wears a Canadian label or calls Canada her second home. I think there’s a renewed interest in the monarchy here because of that and people are following the projects of the Commonwealth a little bit more.
I was also proud to see what a diverse group of young people they had sharing their stories, and generally representing that multiculturalism is an aspirational ideal here (although of course the sad reality of racism and discrimination is alive and well too). It’s a lesson that I think a lot of other countries could take to heart- to celebrate hyphenated identities (being a loyal Canadian citizen and also a member of one (or more) of the many diverse ethnic or racialized groups living here). The goal is seeing strength in diversity. The ideal is for everyine to understand that being a Canadian is about shared values, especially tolerance, and not about cultural heritage.

    • Redgrl says:

      @zazu – well put.

    • Tina says:

That’s really lovely, Zazu. Even despite your PM/government’s present scandal problems (which I honestly don’t think would even be a scandal in any other G7 country), Canada is a model for the world of tolerance, kindness and good government. I know it’s not perfect, but it’s living up to its ideals better than most other countries at the moment.

  28. Fluffy Princess says:

I just saw other photos of this dress, and IT HAS POCKETS!! No wonder she picked it!

    • Princessk says:

Yes, and Meghan made sure that everyone noticed that the dress had pockets. I have seen her do this with other outfits that have pockets, as though she is modelling the outfits and making sure all aspects are noticed. This makes me feel that she was given a very generous discount from Erdem for this particular outfit.

  29. TeamAwesome says:

I saw a pic on Instagram of a side by side of this with a green coat that Diana wore whilst pregnant. Completely different cut, but Diana’s also had embellishments on the coat near the neckline etc, and the green was tonally in the same area as the Erdem. I adore this green, but I can’t wrap my head around the fabric.

  30. Maxie says:

I like that she didn’t felt like she had to wear red from head to toe for a Canadian event.

I’ve read that people want to form a special “CANZUK” alliance (Canada, Australia, UK and New Zealand. I don’t know if it’s realistic but it kind of makes sense.

    • Bohemian Angel says:

@MAXIE Yes and push out the other Commonwealth countries that don’t seem to ‘fit’. Brexit effect no less!

      • Maxie says:

It would be another organization but wouldn’t affect the Commonwealth.

The thing is that most Commonwealth countries have historical links with Great Britain but Australia and Malawi, Canada and Swaziland or Bangladesh and Guyana aren’t exactly a natural match.

      • Bohemian Angel says:

@MAXIE CANZUK is about the ‘white commonwealth’, having more in common with each other basically because they are white. There are other members of the Commonwealth that share more or less the same culture, education system, religion etc the same claims that CANZUK say the four member countries have but they aren’t invited to join simply because they are not white. Reports have claimed it to be a dangerous organisation as its basically British Empire 2.0.
I’m sure the non white commonwealth members will be happy with these countries basically sticking two fingers up and saying ‘your face doesn’t fit’. Brexiteers have been banging on about this for ages, tells me all I need to know really.

      • Nic919 says:

Canada already has a trade deal with Australia and New Zealand and all are part of the Trans Pacific Partnership. I really doubt there would be something new just because the UK wants to leave the EU.

On Twitter they have been showing a 2016 speech by Nick Clegg pre Brexit vote where he said that trade negotiators are not sentimental and that no country was prepared to say they wanted to make a deal with the UK outside of the EU on the same terms. That’s the reality of it. Canada needs the US because they are next door and have a large consumer base. The UK is across an ocean and doesn’t have that many special things to offer trade wise that can’t be obtained elsewhere for a better price. The empire is over and the Brexit leavers were voting on wishful thinking and nostalgia. There really needs to be a revote because this won’t end well for the middle and working class in the UK.

      • Princessk says:

IMO, and if you know your history, India has much more in common with the UK that Australia, NZ and Canada combined.

    • Skipper says:

I’m Australian and most don’t care about the commonwealth. It’s particularly irrelevant to young people. I don’t think it will be around much longer

  31. SpilldatT says:

ETA: I clicked on the link to the catwalk and that’s exactly how I pictured the coat in my head: more midi length that it is on Megs right now because of her belly. She’ll def. look better in this coat once she’s had the baby and the coat falls longer in length on her.

I’m all for Megs wearing this colour, but somehow I’m not at all fond of the material. The texture looks very scratchy or something far better suited for the depths of winter. And the coat looks strange at the length, I feel like it should be midi-lengh because of the beading. I’m not feeling it.

She looks healthy & well so that’s good. Maybe the outfit will look better on her after she’s had the baby…I don’t know how to explain my lack of enthusiasm for the ensemble, it’s not her, it’s the outfit.

  32. Dorothy says:

Sorry to threadjavk but I can’t wait to see the button meltdown that’s coming 🙂

  33. LizB says:

Holy schnikies does she look like her mom !!! The extra pregnancy weight really makes the Doria genes shine through.

  34. JRenee says:

Like the coat, color, cut and style. She looks bee you tee full!
