Julianne Moore got fired from Can You Ever Forgive Me, ‘it’s still kind of painful’

Julianne Moore has been doing press for her new movie, Gloria Bell, where she plays a woman in her 50s looking for love at dance clubs. The last time I covered her I mentioned how awesome the trailer was and how much I want to see it. It’s out now in limited release and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 98%! (It has a lower audience score but we know from Captain Marvel that doesn’t mean sh-t when it’s a female-helmed film.) I called a local theater and they’re getting it on March 22nd so I’m excited! Julianne was on Watch What Happens Live with Diane Von Furstenberg. (Hecate covered her crazy story that she can swim two hours without a break.) She said that she has only been fired from one acting job, as the lead in Can You Ever Forgive Me. She hasn’t seen Melissa McCarthy’s performance yet as the experience was painful for her, but she was complimentary of her as an actress.

Why did you leave the movie Can You Ever Forgive Me and what did you think about Melissa McCarthy in that role?
I didn’t leave that movie I was fired. Nicole [Holofcener] fired me. I think she didn’t like what I was doing. We had just been rehearsing and doing pre-production. Her idea of where the character was was different than where my idea of where the character was and so she fired me.

Have you seen the movie?
I haven’t yet because it’s still kind of painful. I love Melissa McCarthy. I worship her I think she’s fantastic. I’m sure she’s great.

That must [make you] feel so rejected
It’s pretty bad. The only other time I was fired was when I was working at a yogurt stand when I was 15. So it felt bad.

I’ve been fired twice too: once at 15 from a restaurant (my friend who hated that job referred me to it so she could leave) and another time in my late 20s from a toxic ad agency. I really hated that place and was glad to get out. Julianne is such a professional and it sounds like this was hard to take. Melissa ended up being perfect for the role but I bet Julianne would have also killed it in that film and that she similarly would have been nominated for an Oscar. She’s just an excellent actress.

Oh, this is surprising. Yeah I can imagine it was really hurtful, but I know she was let go only because it wasn’t the right match for some reason. Because she’s awesome.

  2. Valerie says:

That really sucks. I would’ve loved to have seen her with Richard E Grant!

Melissa was just so incredible in that movie, I can’t imagine Julianne in it. Looking forward to Gloria Bell!

Yeah I can’t picture it with Julianne at all, even though I love her as an actress. Melissa really was wonderful in it.
I think it was a different director too, who was originally attached with and then fired Julianne, so it would have been a much different movie overall.

I’ve never been flat out fired, but when I was a teenager and worked at a daycare program, they gradually just stopped giving me hours, but never actually told me why or fired me. I might technically still work there…

      • Bella Bella says:

Nicole Holofcener, the director who fired her, is the director who made the movie with Melissa McCarthy.

      • Ashley says:

Nicole didnt end uo making the movie, I think it fell apart not long after Julianne was let go and than thats when Marielle Heller came on to direct and than brought on Melissa.

    • msd says:

Nicole is credited as screenwriter. She didn’t make the movie, Marielle Heller did. Nicole left the production after Julianne. In fact, she says it fell apart because Julianne left and the studio put it on hold, not that she fired her …

Weird story. Who knows what actually happened exactly.

Gloria Bell is the remake of a chilean movie called Gloria, directed by the same guy who won the Oscar last year in the Foreign Film category for A Fantastic Woman (who also directs this remake). If you’re interested, you should check the original film as well, it’s really good and it won in the Berlin Film Festival for Best Actress a few years ago.

The biggest surprise to me was that she corrected the guy calling saying she didn’t leave the project on her own like he had thought which is how it was reported and how it always is reported. Actors just say they’ve left because suddenly they realize they have a “schedule conflict”. I think it goes to show you how confident she is in her abilities that she knows getting fired from something doesn’t reflect on your abilities as much as you weren’t the right fit.

Agree, her transparency here is nice. Also her graciousness and praise for Melissa’s talent. Who knows if it’s genuine, but I like it.

I was fired/bullied out of an absolutely horrific working environment last year (my first adult job post college) – my boss was a monster, gaslit me, isolated me, the whole deal. I was relieved to get out but being fired can be such a humiliating experience. It honestly took me a really long time to recover, and that’s without Oscar buzz around my old job like JM had, lol.

In a happy ending though, I literally just (like 5 mins ago) accepted a new job! I’m so nervous and excited! 😀

      Best of luck, Babadook!!

      babadook YOULL DO GREAT babes!!!

i had a similiar experience… i had a good ol boy boy in his 70s…wasnt use to seeing black people ESP BLACK WOMEN (of any complexion) not be subservient and thought my high salry justified treating me like a lowly slave or intern (no offense) i guess. Tack on the fact that the job quickly learned that i was using them also to buy a house and get out of debt….boyyyyyy when they found that the abuse continued to the point where my boss gave me busy work summarizing an offensive article that had the words darkie and coon in it…. it was so demoralizing and yet i had to laugh…. i had gotten myself into this and i was determined to use them to NO END….

anyways got the house…. got another job and used my sick leave for the last (2weeks) of work….buhbye LOSERS

      sorry for the tangent.

She seems like a very classy (and honest!) woman in the way she handled that response.
