Did Duchess Kate wear her Gucci blouse backwards on purpose??

The Duchess of Cambridge visited the Henry Fawcett Children’s Centre and learned more about the work being done by local organisations in Lambeth and their partners to support young children and their families

As we discussed yesterday, the Duchess of Cambridge stepped out for an event in London with some kids. She wore wide-legged trousers from Jigsaw, which many of you seemed to dislike (I actually liked them a lot and I would wear them) and a purple Gucci blouse. I’ll admit, all I really clocked about the Gucci blouse was that with the high neck and floppy pussybow, the whole thing just looked very 1980s. What I didn’t notice is that Gucci intended for this blouse to be worn much differently. The buttons are supposed to be in the back. Was Kate wearing this blouse backwards on purpose??

Once you see the issue, you can’t unsee it. You can’t unsee the fact that the cuffs are all wrong because she’s wearing it backwards, and you can’t unsee the fact that the cut seems off across her chest and around her armpits too. So, again, did Kate knowingly wear it backwards or did she just do what I would have done, assumed that the buttons go in the front? I mean, let’s be honest – if you hadn’t seen the runway/Gucci-intentioned look, we all would have assumed the buttons go in the front.

Meh I think it’s fine. She still looks normal. Those pants do not fit her but she still looks ok to me.

    • isabelle says:

They are wide legs pants which are in style right now. They do fit her as they are wide and drapey.

      • Alexandria says:

I know what are wide leg pants and they can still be ill fitting if done wrongly.

On the other hand, I looked at another picture and I take it back here. I think the pants fit her fine here and she’s pulling it off.

    • emerson says:

it had to be uncomfortable, especially with her poor posture. blouses typically have darts in the front. the back of a blouse and/or shirt is longer than and the neck is higher.
now i wait for someone to try the , “celine dion” did it.

      p.s.
      1. love. love the little girl on the instagram wasn’t there for being a prop.
      2. kate’s aware about the controversy about and doesn’t care

    • AnnaKist says:

I wondered about that blouse yesterday, because of the back-to-front cuffs, but I rather like that about it. I think the pants are a little too big around her hips, but they still look good on her, and am sure that had they ben hemmed up a bit, would have hung better. I would definitely wear the pants, after I’d cut at least a footoff the hem.

    • Milla says:

I don’t see a problem, looks nice. It is more Kate if you see the buttons😁

  2. Annie. says:

I would assume the blouse has a tag? So it seems to have been done on purpose

    • ByTheSea says:

she probably saw the tag, saw the buttons and assumed the tag was mis-sewn. I think most people would assume the buttons were in the front. Albeit a poster yesterday DID point out that the cuffs were backward, so there’s that.

      • Ashley Garcia says:

I would have bought the blouse and kept the buttons up the back. Much cuter. I like the subtle play of it. It makes a school marm short slightly racey with all the buttons up the back. And I personally just like little details like that (like zipper running up the length of the back of a shirt or the same on dresses).

    • manda says:

That was my question: do guccis not have tags in the back? Although, designers are getting clever with their tags. I have a pair of leggings with writing inside the front and back of the waistband, so I have to hunt for the little cell phone pocket to see which is the front. Annoying.

I can’t believe she has no concept of buttons in the back, though. I have a few tops like that that scream “Kate Middleton”. She has encountered buttons on the back in her life

      • Larelyn says:

I can’t speak to gucci, but some of my blouses have the tag at the left-hand seam, near the waistline.

    • Princessk says:

      It could be reversible.

  3. Cidy says:

If I didnt see this on the runway or on a mannequin I would have assumed the buttons went on the front.

  4. Belle Epoch says:

BUTTONS! She loves buttons! I don’t think it looks so bad – but the price is steep.

    • KNMC says:

Yes, she does have a thing for buttons.

    • isabelle says:

      It looks fine.

    • My3cents says:

She could not resist the buttons, no way would she have them in back where she can’t she them.
Come on! Its like asking Kim Kardashian to actually wear a coat buttoned up instead of for covering her ass. One just cannot resist temptation.

  5. Chef Grace says:

It doesn’t matter how she wore it, it is still fugly. The color is fine. But now that you have pointed out the fugly blouse is backward, me and my OCD will fret about it all day long. LOL

  6. mint says:

Ever since Gary Janetti said Lisa Vanderpump, I can´t unsee it

  7. OriginalLala says:

    backwards, frontwards..it’s always ugly.

  8. Dee says:

Really? I think it’s pretty bloody funny and embarrassing to have £1000 clothes and not know how to wear them properly!

    • whateVer says:

Just because the model wears it a certain way doesn’t mean you *have* to wear it the same way. Besides this gives her the option of switching it up and wearing it the same way as the model the next time.

      • Beli says:

Fine, but the cut of a blouse in the front is different to the back, so the fit is completely off.

      • Dee says:

That’s ridiculous! Clothes are cut to fit a certain way. It’s not an option to wear trousers on your arms instead of your legs. The only reason Kate could wear this backwards is that she’s so flat-chested it almost fit the same backwards! I still think it’s funny!

      • Mika says:

Why not buy a different shirt if that’s the case. The fit is obviously off because of the way she wore it. The design of the shirt is very basic, if that’s how she wanted to wear it she could have bought a shirt like it from anywhere.

    • Christy says:

Seriously? My reaction was, who cares?

  9. Becks1 says:

You are right – once you see it you cant unsee it. I didn’t love the blouse yesterday, because of the bow, but I did like the trousers. But now that I’m seeing the blouse was backwards, I’m just kind of scratching my head. Was there no one at home when she was getting dressed?

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

Nanny Maria was doing the school run so Kate tried dressing herself.

I think it’s not that bad really, the fit is a bit off once pointed out, but at least she is out doing visits so that is an improvement.

  10. Enn says:

I realize I’m not Gucci’s target demographic (can’t spend the mortgage payment on a blouse) but how on earth do you dress yourself with buttons in the back? I don’t have a dresser or assistant.

    • Dee says:

You do up most of them and then slip it over your head, then reach to do do up the top ones.

      • Enn says:

        I’m not that dexterous 😂😂

      • Becks1 says:

Whenever I have something like that I have to try it out in the dressing room to make sure I can do it myself for work clothes (Since I go to the gym during the day and need to be able to dress myself afterwards, ha.) Its definitely easier with some blouses/dresses than others (for buttons, zippers, etc.)

  11. ByTheSea says:

And we’re still not talking about Gucci’s racism and the fact that she has deliberately worn this brand now twice in the wake of the scandal? Okay, I’ll see myself out…

    • ZanB says:

Yes please. Can we discuss her support of a racist brand ?!?

      • Lynnie says:

She doesn’t care, because their actions don’t affect her personally. Same goes for the majority of normal people which is why no one mentions it.

      • Megan says:

Her regular stylist is on maternity leave and it looks like whoever she is working with chooses pieces from higher-end brands than Kate normally wears. It’s possible she is not aware of that indecent and gross sweater because Gucci isn’t one of her go-to brands. Not saying that to excuse her, but I’m guessing she doesn’t spend a ton of time on Twitter, which is where the awful sweater got the most play.

    • Mia says:

@BytheSea people on twitter on discussing this. Let’s be real, if the OTHER Duchess had worn Gucci, the faux outrage would have been swift

    • Greta G says:

I think Kate is being shady, like Princess Michael of Kent & her blackamoor brooch.
Unfortunately, the blouse doesn’t seem to have darts. But one would think something was wrong just by the fit and the cuffs. They must’ve had pictures; I don’t know why they wouldn’t referred to them.

  12. boredblond says:

My first thought was the maid that helps her dress (probably has a title, but I don’t know it) wasn’t around to fasten the back buttons.

  13. Cee says:

LOL. Didn’t the tag clue her in? Now I can stop wondering why the cuffs looked wrong.

    • jan90067 says:

Most higher end clothes seem to have the tags sewn into the seam towards the bottom of the piece, so no, you wouldn’t necessarily know. For me, it “feels” wrong, when put on backwards, or the neck seems “higher” when backwards. But, here, other than the cuffs, it didn’t see “off” to me… I remember the pussybow blouses buttoning in the front in the 80s.

  14. Casey20 says:

It’s Kate, so of course it’s perfect and Gucci made the mistake…. Not to mention the blouse cost nearly 800lbs but it’s the English Rose and cost isn’t an issue…. right. Her job is to show up and smile.

    • Silas Marner says:

Yes, I have read many comments about Meghan needing a team that cares enough about her to help fix her wardrobe issues. Here is Kate in an expensive blouse from Gucci that is on backwards but there is no concern that no one cares about her or concern about cost because of Brexit.

  15. whateVer says:

I like the way Kate wore it. A shirt with buttons at the back just looks weird.

  16. Kittycat says:

I still cant get over the price.

$1000+ Canadian for a basic top.

    • mtam says:

And an unflattering one at that.

    • Alexandria says:

It’s really ridiculous on any royal (UK or anywhere else in the world). I’ll say it again, I think aside from state banquets, all democratic governments should have a clothes limit for bread and butter events like these. For example, limit them to $500 and below, for both male and female royals. The upkeep for their housing and security can’t exactly be compromised.

  17. Darla says:

I am in love with that color.

  18. Kendra says:

I am surprised you didn’t make a button joke. I think it looks fine regardless of the reason although I do wonder if it was intentional or not.

  19. khaveman says:

I really like this look. She did something different and looks very modern (even though it’s retro inspired)!

  20. Stephanie says:

    Now I can’t stop laughing

  21. Joanna mitchell says:

I think the tiny purse is so at odds with the flowy pants and voluminous blouse it just looks so off.

  22. Rachel says:

I have to say – I have serious body envy with this woman. How did those narrow hips give birth to 3 (good-sized) babies without pain medication? She’s amazing to me, but it’s funny that even yesterday I thought the way the blouse lay was awkward…

    • JadedBrit says:

@Rachel I’m a little worried re her extreme slenderness. As an ex-anorexic (and one who is still fighting it, decades later: I have a bout of dysentery at present and have dropped a lot of weight; I certainly wasn’t big to start with, work out every day for over an hour because I love the endorphins and muscle strength, but getting ‘thin’ has awoken a multitude of sleeping demons, and I’m struggling with the urge, once I’ve shaken the illness, to continue) I’m not sure it sends the best message. Yes, she was always an athletic girl and woman; but after each child, she seems to be dwindling and dwindling…
Please understand, all of you – I’m not body shaming. I just worry that as a figure of public influence, she *may* – and I use that modal with due caution – not be presenting the healthiest image to emulate.

      • Blacksheep says:

Unless you’re her doctor, please stop. You have no right to oh so casually hint that she has a an eating disorder.

      • JadedBrit says:

@BlackSheep What an oh-so-hostile response. Funny: one goes out of one’s way to speak with sensitivity and tact, and it nonetheless backfires. I speak from observation: Kate has become progressively slimmer and slimmer post- the birth of each child. I worry – and repeat – that some may see this as “thinness goals”. Re eating disorders – I don’t believe I applied that explicitly to the Duchess, only to myself.

    • LizB says:

Without pain medication? When did KP reveal that Kate never had any help with pain (gas or epidural) during labor? I’ve never heard anything.

Also, hip width is actually not a good indicator of how easy a woman can birth babies. It’s the shape of the pelvis and the baby position.

      • Becks1 says:

I doubt she had an epidural with the second two because she was walking around a few hours after the birth, and in heels. I would think after an epidural she would have not been walking as well.

I had heard that she went without any pain medication, but I honestly cant tell you where I heard that. Its not something that KP would have publicized.

      • LizB says:

        @Becks1

I was walking around a few hours after the birth of my kids and I had epidurals for both. I think assuming she didn’t have *any* help with pain is strange.

      • Becks1 says:

@LizB but walking around in heels like she was? I guess she prob didn’t walk very far/very long though, so you could be right. I had an epidural but cant relate, as my labor was bad and ended in a C-section, so I don’t know what’s normal post “vaginal birth with epidural” vs “vaginal birth without pain meds.”

Like I said I cant tell you where I heard about the “no pain meds” thing. I feel like it was a RR at the time or a #mypalacesource type of thing. Which, in retrospect, seems kind of ridiculous to take seriously, but a few years ago we did, lol.

  23. Beth says:

Do designers think shirts look fancy with buttons on the back? She probably would’ve been teased on Twitter for wearing a shirt backwards if she wore it the correct way and people didn’t realize it. The way Kate wore it looked better, and I love purple

  24. Bethany Karger says:

I can’t figure out how anyone can put on clothing backwards and not notice that it doesn’t fit right. It would just feel wrong. And why would you do that intentionally?

    • Snazzy says:

I actually did that once, to an important meeting! I was just so nervous I didn’t notice until later… I had a suit jacket on top so didn’t look to strange (I don’t think).

  25. MellyMel says:

I can’t believe this top cost $1300! It’s so ugly and dated.

  26. vava says:

I commented yesterday that the cuffs were put on backwards, so this explains the situation. I thought it might have been some sort of odd design feature, but LOL she is wearing this thing backwards! I wonder if we’ll ever see this thing again?

    • Ahoyoy says:

Vava, I screamed in laughter when I saw this. We both owe Gucci an apology. How many aides does this dimwit need to manage simply leaving the house? How do you not notice the giant Gucci tag on the back collar of the blouse. Moron.

      • Linda says:

        @Ahoyoy
Kate is a moron and dimwit because she wore her shirt front to back? Waoh

      • AhoyOy says:

Wait. Are you really suggesting that she’s not?

      • BabaBlacksheep says:

@Linda Ahoyoy is a Meghan Stan who hates Kaye and is willing to lie to defend her fav. Seriously, ask her about her “two year old” coat.

      • AhoyOy says:

Oh, you mean my de la renta trench from 2 falls ago? It’s fabulous, darling. But keep on with your conspiracy theories and racism, it’s totally not a bad look on you. XOXO.

But seriously, dear, do get some help.

      • Linda says:

        @Ahohyoy
What exactly is racist about what BABABLACKSHEEP said? I am a black woman and I cant figure out what is racist in her comment.

    • Nic919 says:

When I saw this post today I immediately thought of how you pointed out the backwards cuffs yesterday.

As for all the people saying that wearing a blouse backwards is no big deal, I also hope you were saying that a tag left on a dress was also no big deal. Maybe I can go check that post again and compare.

  27. Cindy says:

This is maybe the most relatable thing she has ever done

  28. LizB says:

Kate has a history of this. Didn’t she put the little baby bonnet on wrong for George? The Spanish made one from Nanny Maria.

  29. Kit says:

This look is really dated, but I think it’s the styling more than anything. The blouse doesn’t work with her too-long hair, the blowout, the handbag and the frumpy Kiki McDonough earrings. This kind of retro blouse begs for a loose, casual updo and some minimalist jewelry.

  30. BendyWindy says:

This is just her “Diana wearing a necklace on her head” moment. 😂

  31. Digital Unicorn says:

Like others once you see you can’t unsee – the fit looks off on the shoulders and sleeves. Wonder what it looked like from the back.

    • Agenbiter says:

The tie is also intended to be wrapped another half turn for a higher and smoother effect at the neck and bow ends above the waistline. Poor Kate (“Daring Duchess” per DM – hah!)

  32. Mindy_dopple says:

I recently did that with a boat neck elbow length tee that I love from Target so much. However I knew something was off because the neck felt just a tad higher. YOU CAN FEEL IT even if the front is similar to the back.

  33. Casey20 says:

Kate wearing clothes backwards is now considered “relatable” …the hypocrisy is just too much

  34. LivePlantsCleanAir says:

I have a dress that feels too low cut for me….so I wear it backwards, when I don’t want to have to wear an undershirt with it (can’t with camisoles cause the lacy bits give me hives; luckily I have the entire rainbow+ when it comes to undershirts!!). If wearing the dress plus undershirt would make me too warm…I wear the dress backwards. I’ve removed a LOT of tags so I can wear tops backwards, cause I find MANY, many garments fit me poorly on top because I need at least a 2X (20W) to fit my lower half!! I’m pear shaped and dress makers seem to think if you’re big on bottom, you’ve got boobs up top and that’s just not the case for me.

On a different note, that Megan twitter page was not written by DoS and I think it rude for them to pretend they are her.

  35. PixiePaperdoll says:

The downside of small boobs, I guess. I haven’t been able to wear a shirt backward since I was 13.

    • Lady D says:

I used to wish I could turn my head around. I had far more cleavage from my shoulder blades than I ever did from my chest.

  36. Kk2 says:

Hm missed this outfit from yesterday. Overall I am pleased because I want her to wear pants more and attempt a more modern professional wardrobe. However, these pants are not the most flattering on her. She is so tall anyway that the effect is almost like she’s on stilts. Maybe a slightly lower waistline and slightly shorter hem on pants would help- I don’t mind long pants in general but her legs are already so long that the effect is stilt like.

I don’t care about the backwards blouse. It’s fine either way to me. I don’t love the color of it, particularly paired with black. But again I’m grading on a generous curve with this one because I’m so happy to see her in dress pants.

    • LizB says:

Kate actually has a longer torso than legs. The high heels and high waist of these trousers are creating a visual illusion.

      • AhoyOy says:

Yeah I have the same body type, high waisted pants are our friends. She could even go an inch or 2 higher on the waist for a better proportion.

  37. knowitall says:

I’m sorry, but all I can see is how gaunt she is. I’m surprised more people aren’t commenting on that.

    • LizB says:

I noticed it. It shocked me.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

I’ve commented before that I think Kate has an eating disorder. But people always find excuses for her — “she’s always been that thin” (no, she hasn’t). “That’s just pre-wedding nerves, she’ll stop after the wedding” (no, she didn’t). “Her bad posture isn’t from poor nutrition, tall girls don’t like to stand out and they slouch” (no, she always wears high heels to appear even *taller* than she is). And they make similar excuses for other celebrities too, like Victoria Beckham (“she’s always been thin”; “it’s because she works non-stop”; “her receding hair line is probably genetic”; etc.). I’ve come to accept that celebrities’ eating disorders are verboten, and we are supposed to ignore them.

    • AhoyOy says:

She really is. Whether it’s actual disordered eating or obsessive exercising or just the fact that she gets the best press attention when she is hyper-thin, her skeletal figure is stomach turning. But, check for everyone else in the comments talking about how jealous they are that she looks like this after 3 kids. It’s sad.

  38. Mrs.Krabapple says:

That blouse is ugly. But I don’t blame Kate for wearing it backwards — buttons on the back of a blouse are stupid.

    • vava says:

Maybe if it has darts, then the way she wore it accommodated her shoulder blades that stick out because she’s so gaunt and has horrific posture! My guess is that blouse does indeed have darts for the bust, and Kate is so clueless she didn’t even notice that.

  39. Paris says:

Am I the only one who think, that she needs good push-up bra?

    • Lady D says:

Most of the Royal Family could benefit from a good push-up bra, Andrew included.

      • ProfPlum says:

        Lady D., I’m dead.

      • mva says:

Oh yes….I think that often about Camilla. A good bra would do wonders for her. She often has really lovely clothes but her bosoms appear to be down closer to her waist. They need a good “hoiking”!

  40. Reece says:

Meh. i have a shirt that I wear backwards a lot because I like having the peep hole in front. She looks nice. She’s wearing actual trousers and not skinny jeans. I’m mildly impressed.

  41. april says:

I’m sure she knew what she was doing. I’ve done this with a couple of tops. I love the photo where you can see the full view of her outfit. She looks stunning in those colors and I love the wide width pants.

  42. TheOriginalMia says:

Heh. I thought the blouse looked bad due to her bad posture, but no…it’s on backwards. How bizarre. Why would anyone wear a blouse backwards? Still giving her props for trousers, but seriously…wtf, Kate?!

  43. Elizabeth Suzanne Phillips says:

I just thought it was a weird design with backwards sleeve cuffs.

  44. Lorelei says:

Even Melania, who is dumber than a bag of hair, managed to figure out how to wear it correctly.

    https://ca.style.yahoo.com/kate-middleton-wears-melania-trumps-infamous-gucci-pussy-bow-blouse-152751078.html

  45. Anare says:

I commented right away that the ties for the pussybow were too long and it looked off. Now I know why. If she worn the blouse the way it was made the ties would be wrapped around her neck again and would be shorter. I don’t mind the blouse but it looks off. Not a fan of those pants. Especially for a function with kids.

  46. tiny says:

Just look at the sleeves buttons, they`re normally backwards, certainly NOT in the front…
