Princess Beatrice made her couple-debut with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi last night

The Portrait Gala 2019

As soon as Prince Harry got with Meghan Markle, his status as the Royal Bridget Jones was over. Princess Beatrice became the royal family’s Bridget Jones – the last single lady of her generation of royals, unlucky in love and always dating dudes who were unwilling to commit. The “Poor Single Bea” storyline reached critical mass around her younger sister’s wedding last fall, when there was an undercurrent of “when will it ever be Beatrice’s time?” For whatever record, I never thought Beatrice is some sad sack – she seems to have a lot of fun, but she also seemed to have something of a quarter-life crisis in her late 20s.

Anyway, Beatrice wasn’t even really single during Eugenie’s wedding, which is what everyone thought. By last November, we learned that Beatrice had been dating Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi for about two months. They went from “discreetly dating” to “they’ll probably get married” in two months. And last night, they made their red carpet couple-debut at the big gala for the National Portrait Gallery. The Duchess of Cambridge was in attendance (she’s the royal patron), but Beatrice and Edoardo were there too.

Edoardo seems to have that look of a “York princess boyfriend” – I don’t know, all of their boyfriends all seem to look alike to me. By all accounts, Mozzi – he apparently goes by Edo – is pretty well-connected in British society. His stepfather was the late Christopher Shale, who was a close friend of David Cameron. The Yorks have been friendly with Edo’s family for years, and Beatrice and Edo knew each other for years before they began dating. As you can tell by Edo’s name, his lineage is tied with Italian aristocracy, but there’s enough British aristocracy in his bloodline too, enough to suit the Windsors. Is Edo the one? I don’t know. But he certainly seems to be taking this seriously.

By the way, Beatrice’s dress in these photos is Alaïa, and it retails for £5,660. Beautiful color, but I feel like she didn’t need the black tights. The velvet Jimmy Choos combined with the velvet dress… it’s too much velvet.

He does have a “York boyfriend” look lol. I cant put my finger on what it is, but its something.

Who pays for things like Beatrice’s dress? Andrew?

    • Its Ok says:

I doubt Andrew pays for Beatrice’s things. She’s allowed freebies and loans because she isn’t a working royal. There’s a reason we got pap shots outside Ralph and Russo hinting that’s what she would wear to her sister’s wedding and when she’s out at events like this. Once you get a certain amount of rich/famous it’s easier to get free stuff. Some of the partying she does is also for her job. So, she “works” more than people think.

    • Megan says:

Beatrice has plenty of her own money. She can afford this dress.

      • James says:

Right, like a chick who vacations for a living has an extra 8 grand for a velvet dress.

      • TheOriginalMia says:

@James, Beatrice, like her cousins sans William, received an inheritance from the Queen Mother. She has plenty of money.

    • SNAP says:

      @Becks1 It’s the eyes 😋

    • Tina says:

Beatrice got a bit of money from the Queen Mother, but it wouldn’t be much by these people’s standards (maybe £5m, which if anyone has any sense will be socked away in savings). Andrew is funded somewhat by the Queen (unlike the Duchy of Cornwall, the Duchy of Lancaster posts no public accounts and is accountable to no one) and somewhat by very dodgy friends, from places like Uzbekistan, who give him “loans.”

  2. Clare says:

It’s been so cold and crazy windy, let the girl wear her tights and be warm-ish!

Personally I love the velvet on velvet combo.

  3. Ader says:

She looks fantastic lately. I think she’s one of those lucky people who gets better looking with age.

    • Becks1 says:

I agree. I think its a matter of finding her personal style and what works for her. She definitely seems more comfortable in her own skin than she was 5 years ago.

  4. Lindy says:

I would kill for that gorgeous dress–the cut, the style, the cinched waist, the rich velvet. It’s beautiful. I hope she’s happy. You’re totally right that he looks like “insert appropriate boyfriend here” though.

  5. Kittycat says:

I don’t think this will last.

He dumped his fiancee pretty badly so that doesn’t scream marrying material.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

Yeah – Bea doesn’t have a great picker. Dave whatshisface got married pretty quickly after moving on from her and rumours were he was only using her for her connections.

      • Megan says:

I kind of think Edo may be looking for connections as well. He was engaged to and living with Dara Huang until last fall. She is a superstar in the architecture world.

      • Its Ok says:

The rumors that Dave used her for her connections aren’t rumors. Bea earned her reputation for constantly being on vacation when she was helping Dave schmooze rich investors for Uber. He never would have been able to do what he did on his own. He made a mint and then dumped her.

I think this guy could be ok. A lot of the rumors surrounding the breakup are contradictory. Dara’s mom said that Edo and Dara were broken up 4 months before Edo and Bea got together 2 months before Eugenie’s wedding. Then a “friend” of Edo said that there was overlap and they met at the wedding (even though they have actually known each other for years). Then Dara’s dad ran with Bea stealing Edo and breaking up their family. Bea’s always had bad taste in men, but I’m not sure that is necessarily the case here. Dara got pregnant shortly after she started seeing Edo. I think she told her parents they were engaged to make them feel better about the situation. By all accounts there were no wedding plans after being engaged for 3 years. She didn’t even have an engagement ring. So, I’m not sure the rumors are at all trust worthy.

      • Ashley Garcia says:

Agreed. My friend dated Dave before he dated Bea and she said that he was a social climber.

    • Maria says:

I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him.

  6. Cee says:

He looks like a freckles-less, dark haired Eddie Redmayne.

  7. Ladyjax says:

He looks like a deer in the headlights! And like he’s ventriloquist-whispering to Bea “Am I smiling? Idk if I’m smiling. Does this look right? They can definitely see my teeth! Should I show *more* teeth?”

    • Birdix says:

Yes! He looks like she hypnotized him before the event, then was instructing him:
      “walk!”
      “smile!”
      “more smile!”

  8. Laura says:

    Eh…he could get it

  9. mtam says:

That dress is fug. The bf is cute though.

  10. LadyT says:

It’s literally a belted shirt dress. Why $8000?

  11. Kendra says:

I think it’s good in general I’d royals date normal people, or at least outside their circles, but sometimes it’s fun if they marry aristocrats too so we can have fun with the connections. Not that this really matters and hope she is happy.

And I have quarter life crisis myself, I have so many married friends already and I don’t even have a boyfriend 🙁

    • Ader says:

95% of them will be divorced in 7 years. 🙂

    • Fluffy Princess says:

Don’t even worry about it. 25 is an amazing age! Go out and travel and have super fun, because you probably will “settle down” one day–and unless you’ve got money, all the travel and fun gets harder and harder to do because–obligations!

    • Windswept Hair says:

It’s okay! I met my boyfriend when I was 28 years old. We are each other’s first serious relationship. Like Fluffy Princess said, 25 is an amazing age and I wish I knew it back then! Instead I worried and worried. Kinda wish I could turn back time and tell 25-year-old me to chill because everything does happen for a reason.
So yes, +1 what Fluffy Princess said. And don’t worry!

  12. girl_ninja says:

I love her look. The color is perfect and she looks fabulous.

  13. Jb says:

they are not even holding hands. that makes me sad for Beatrice.

    • Ader says:

Holding hands is awkward and uncomfortable unless you and your partner are at the exact right heights so it’s comfortable. Also, if you’re like me and have sweaty-palm problems…no bueno! I don’t think my husband of 14 years and I have held hands for longer than 30 seconds, ever.

  14. Jb says:

I’m glad I’m decent looking and not Uber rich because at least I know ppl like me for me and not for my connections and or only my looks! Imagine your whole life wondering do they love me OR love what I can give them/how they benefit from me. Would this dude be dating her if she wasn’t who she was? No but she lives a pampered life so can’t be too sad for her. Eh on the whole situation

  15. samipup says:

What is with their EYES!!! Look like a cartoon rendition of Wiley Coyote…..

  16. Keaton says:

That dress is a gorgeous color but awfully pricey.

  17. meh says:

Their child will look perpetually startled

  18. jammypants says:

They look alike. Oddly enough, facially I find Harry and Megan alike too, especially the close set eyes, nose and jaw. I know so many couples who sort of resemble the other. What an odd thing.

    • elle says:

Harry and Megan look alike to me as well. Like they came out of the same mold, then had eye, hair and skin colors applied.

  19. bobafelty says:

They have matching eyes (bugging out of their faces)!! But seriously, good for her.

  20. YankLynn says:

So I see in other mags that he has a 2 yr old son with the ex fiancee and also was married and divorced before the baby mama. Two exes and a toddler — is that too much baggage for Bea ? She’s only had one adult relationship and I don’t have a sense how well she navigates “it’s complicated”.
