Amal Clooney in Stella McCartney for an Edinburgh event: stunning or unflattering?

George and Amal Clooney attend the People's Postcode Lottery Charity Gala

I’ve barely even noticed this, but George Clooney is looking pretty good these days, right? Several years ago, I thought he got some bad “work” to his face – mainly around his eyes and forehead – but things seem to have loosened up. His hair is a great length and I love the grey beard. I think George wants to make sure that people see him looking so good too – earlier this week, he and Amal attended The Prince’s Trust dinner at Buckingham Palace, and of course they were more than happy to be photographed extensively at the fundraiser. Then on Thursday, the Clooneys made their way to Edinburgh, where they were being honored for the charity, the Clooney Foundation for Justice.

This event was sponsored by the People’s Postcode Lottery, which seems slightly downmarket for the Clooneys to actually show up for it, but whatever. Maybe Amal fancied a trip to Scotland. The special award was in recognition of their foundation’s work to protect “millions of the world’s most vulnerable people from human rights abuses.”

For this event, Amal wore Stella McCartney. I guess we’re calling this a jumpsuit? Those are pants, it’s not a skirt. The fabric is SO stiff and because Stella had to put her stink all over it, it’s an ill-fitted mess. The jumpsuit should have been canceled as soon as Stella decided to put that giant crotch seam up puffy, stiff fabric. SO BAD. Some nice stuff: the color is beautiful and Amal is styled perfectly. Great lipstick, great hair.

  1. Weaver says:

Their body language is so off. There’s always a gap between them and they seem out of sync.

    • Erinn says:

I never read much into that. I think for the most part, reading body language off of a couple quick photos isn’t going to give you anything of value. There’s going to be gaps when they’re walking – they’re not going to be glued to the hip. In the photo of them posing together neither are mushed up against each other, but they’re not far apart either. They’re not going to crumple up their outfits just to ‘look’ more together.

    • S says:

I think she has a tendency to slouch a lot and that in turn pushes her hip outwards and then that pushes their body language into awkward places.

I’ve noticed that she slouches a lot, especially when pictured with him, but also when pictured alone so I’m not sure if it’s an old habit or a newly acquired one that’s developed since they became a couple.

    • Alyse says:

It was so cold yesterday in Edinburgh, I winced when I sam Amal. Look how wrapped up people in the background are! There’s no way she’s going to look relaxed in that outfit.

      • Jayna says:

She showed up in a dark-blue coat, which I loved. I guess she took it off for the red carpet walk, which isn’t unusual. .

      • Cuckoo says:

The coat was beautiful as well. Both pieces super elegant. She looks so much better when she isn’t trying to upstage people with big colours that clash with her already strong looks, but I suppose she can’t help herself. Plus the shoes – 10/10.

    • velourazure says:

They are such brother-sister twins. We all want to fall in love with ourselves I guess?

    • SM says:

To me it always looks like George is trying to drag her away from the cameras.

    • Bettyrose says:

I figure they’re probably friends and like each other well enough. People have married for worse reasons than image.

    • Bella Bella says:

@Weaver, I totally agree. I never see joy between them. Just punching a card for work. More contract marriages.

      • Still_Sarah says:

@ Weaver @ Bella Bella : That was the first thing I noticed when I looked at the photo. There’s no chemistry there. It has always looked like an “image” marriage to me but, hey, like @ Bettyrose says, people have married for worse reasons than that.

      • Matcha says:

Still convinced by those rumours about George but think they like each other. His parents are apparently speed traditional Catholics, so. I don’t think there’s a formal contract but she knew (and was happy) they’d be doing a big showmance from the very start. Really awful couple, no class, restraint, or accurate idea about their true (pretty irrelevant) position in the scheme of things. The way she went on and on about herself and preened at his lifetime achievement award and sashayed down to the royal wedding as he pushed that nice lady in yellow out of the way so they couple have their couple pap shots sums it all up.

  2. LL says:

I never can decide which one of them is more thirsty.

    • AnnaKist says:

I give them equal billing, just to be on the safe side.

    • Cindy says:

I never understood why people get thirsty vibes from Amal. If she wanted to go full Elsa Pataky, she could. The way I see it, George’s the thirsty one (it’s part of his job) and Amal plays along to it. AFAIK Amal hasn’t even done an interview about her private life with George, so I don’t understand what thirst people are seeing.

      • Case says:

I don’t get thirsty vibes from Amal either. Her husband is an actor. She attends events with him. It’s not like she does separate interviews and posts to Instagram all the time or something lol.

      • LadyT says:

She’s an accomplished woman in her own right that happens to love fashion. That’s not my definition of thirsty.

      • Tessy says:

Because she’s always seeking out the camera with her eyes. I’ve never seen anyone do it to the extent she does.

      • Seria says:

@Cindy, yeah I agree. I think she doesn’t mind the attention, loves fashion, and some people find her smug and thirsty because…I’m not sure why. She’s very striking, a woman of colour, not from Hollywood, wonder if some of the hate is a bit of “stay in your lane” type of thing.

      • Tootsie45 says:

Lady T, I’m with ya. There’s some really ugly misogyny around it. God forbid there’s an incredibly accomplished, highly moral, beautiful woman who loves fashion and isn’t afraid to own it when camera are out. There must be something wrong with her.

      • Janice_from_friends says:

Calling someone out for their phoniness is misogyny? It’s not a god-given fact that she is beautiful. Stan and Baria laid the PR thick with Amal’s roll out but … the optics are off. She’s attention-getting with her height, thin-stature, and her multiple hair extensions – but she’s definitely NOT beautiful, by any stretch of the imagination. From this perspective, I see Joan Crawford & Michael Jackson’s love child.

    • Miss M says:

Everytime I see them, I want to throw water their way.

      • Dilettante says:

+1, and more her way than his

      • 90sgirl says:

I remember one of Tanna’s assistant photog , would tweet that she was about to take a walk through the London street and got a call to go photograph her. Everytime and even airport arrivals.

        Not a coincidence.
And that thirst walk, prance into the Royal wedding is now legendary. I loved it!

Lady is thirsty and she knows it. LOL

It’s not a crime to be thirsty. Lol

      • RealityCheck says:

I saw/see comments defending Amal where people are stating that Amal receives all this hate and backlash because she’s Arab, non-White, seemingly-to-the-masses-a-Muslim? I take issue with that because 1) I am East Asian and definitely DON’T look White and have a vantage point; 2) When I see Amal, especially in pictures with other White people, she has the same complexion as other White folks. Look at pictures of Amal and George. They not only look like brother and sister, look at their jaw lines and head shape – they have same color complexion. And, she’s constantly compared to Anne Hathaway and Anne Hathaway is as White as White as White, 3) *clutching pearls* God FORBID, if George married an obviously non-White person – an East Asian with Asian eyes, or a dark-completion South Asian, or a Black person. *gasp!!!!*

Now, ladies, that’s where’s you’ll see the real, dark true hate. Because, sorry not sorry, Amal is passable as White. Yes, she has some “ethnic” features – but if I passed her on the street – my radar would bleep White.

Not that it matters, I met Amal. She looks White. Period.

      • RealityCheck says:

@90sgirl Did you see this? Hahahahaha…. love it. https://media.giphy.com/media/1oHNUUmncOcYpjwHEz/giphy.gif

  3. Kaylah says:

I actually love this so much. The color is gorgeous and I love the belt to cinch her waist. The shoes are the exact same shade of navy. Love. Love. Love.

    • TQ says:

I really love this look too! So elegant.

    • chlo says:

i love it too!! it’s definitely a look but one that I love.

    • LadyT says:

Plus the animal print purse is the perfect light touch of interest.

    • minx says:

      I really, really love it.

    • sequinedheart says:

I’m obsessed with this outfit. I rarely look at the celebs or duchesses and think “oh i would wear that” because, I’m not them. but this? shut up and take my money. I would rock the pants off this pants suit!

    • JanetDR says:

On the whole it’s stunning and they look great together ! I feel like this makes her look rather short waisted though. Great color for her!

    • Cuckoo says:

I agree. Can’t stand Amal but this is one of the best things she’s ever worn and she got the makeup right (lighter colours esp lip and heavy foundation to cover up her huge eye bags). She looks fantastic.

  4. Zapp Brannigan says:

That jumpsuit with flats, a fedora and a different belt, lounging on a yacht in the South of France and I would love it. God help me but I think this Stella McCartney is not that bad, pass the smelling salts I will be in the fainting parlor.

  5. Gail says:

Yeah I love this look too. I can’t unsee the giant crotch seam now, but I can look past that.
Why are the Clooneys suddenly everywhere in the UK?

    • Mia4s says:

“Why are the Clooneys suddenly everywhere in the UK?”

No big mystery; they live there now and he has an event streaming series for Hulu premiering in May. It’s time to get back in the public eye.

  6. Kittycat says:

    Amal looked great.

I like the unique style of the pantsuit

  7. Chrissy says:

I love this outfit. I think the stiffness of the fabric makes it more formal-looking. I love the colour but the shiny fabric is meh. I have to say Amal looks great. Has she been tweaked recently? Her face looks a bit more streamlined somehow. Great hair as always. George is looking grey all over. He seems a bit unhealthy looking here.

  8. Maddy says:

I actually like it. She looks outrageously beautiful. It would have been better as a straight skirt though.

  9. Carli Whitehead says:

What about GC’s ill-fitted dad suit?

  10. Kcat says:

    I think it’s gorgeous.

  11. AnnaKist says:

Mmmm, I’m not feeling it. But then, I like practically none of Stella Mac’s designs.

  12. L84Tea says:

I actually think it’s a nice look. But on another note, I have never, ever understood that weird pigeon-toed stance that so many celeb females do on red carpets in their heels. Is there something about wearing heels that high that automatically make the feet do that? Over the years, I have noticed so many of them stand that way with their feet turned in and I just can’t figure out what it’s about.

  13. Valiantly Varnished says:

That jumpsuit is FIRE. I love it.

  14. Sue Denim says:

George looks healthy, fit and trim and maybe not in pain… good to see

  15. Jadedone says:

I feel like Amal can pull off anything

  16. sassychitowner says:

I would have liked this better if it were longer

  17. Paisley says:

I think Stella M. is a hit and a miss, especially her early work, but this is gorgeous in my untrained eyes.

George has been hobknobbing quite a bit as of late; a bad look on him. In fact, I’m really tired of him.

  18. Digital Unicorn says:

I really like this outfit on Amal – she looked great. He does too, TBH I prefer the current salt and pepper Clooney to the his younger self.

I do like the salt and pepper look on a man.

  19. mycomment says:

they both look great; and I love his letting his grey streaks fly.. nothing more pathetic than some old guy with dark black hair. and love the color of whatever it is she’s wearing, but not necessarily the style..

re the body language; she’s more focused on the photographers (as usual), but their fingers are intertwined… and she’s genuinely smiling. compare and contrast any photo with dotard and escort#1 (although the fake melania appears to be able to hold his hand)

  20. Fluffy Princess says:

They both look great here. I always enjoy seeing what Amal will wear.

But I have to agree, Stella McCartney — I don’t understand how she has lasted so long in Fashion to be considered an A-List designer. Meghan’s 2nd white dress for her wedding and this jump suit is literally the ONLY two things I have ever liked from McCartney. UGH, I just don’t get her clothing line–it’s like Marchesa to me–just weird or ugly.

    • Gail says:

Meghan wore a black coat with a tie-front, satin ribbon by her, this was before they got married, it was gorgeous!

      • Fluffy Princess says:

Oh! Well, I’ll go look for it, because it’s nice when McCartney gets it right.

  21. Canber says:

These two make a very good couple so far.

  22. Jayna says:

I think she looks stunning. I love the outfit on her. Love the purse also. As someone earlier said, she looks elegant. And George is looking great. He’s got his spark back.

  23. A says:

No man has ever looked as good with grey hair as George Clooney does.

    • ravynrobyn says:

@A-for me, Steve Carell with his grey hair and salt-and-pepper beard does IT for me 😜

  24. Boudica says:

In my opinion Amal looks fine. I don’t particularly care for the outfit and wouldn’t wear it but it looks OK on her. George, OTOH, needs a tie. He should be wearing the same level of formality as his wife. As it is, he looks sloppy and underdressed.

  25. zeph says:

For the love of God, why can’t this woman ever stand up straight? She’s just like KM>

  26. Littlefishmom says:

I usually dislike Stella’s clothes but this is stunning. Mrs. Clooney has impeccable taste and the body to wear anything. Love her!

  27. Nothingtoseehere says:

@zeph, because then you’d see how much taller than him she is.

  28. Cuckoo says:

Amal looks really good – both makeup and outfit. She has A LOT of makeup on though, but the lip colour is more subdued, which is flattering for her strong features. Anyone noticed George is growing out his hair a bit and styling it up and moving away from the somewhat dated ’90s George Michael (nothing against George Michael; I’m a fan) close crop? He looks fresher for it.

Anyway, yes, both are thirsty and so singleminded in their desperation to cement themselves as elite power couple. Narcisstic fauxmanitarians / pseudo social reformers. Yuck, yuck, yuck.

    • Dako says:

No cementing needed, they are at the apex of power-couple-dom, whether you like it or not. There is no desperation here other than that of other couples trying to emulate the Clooney’s seemingly effortless ascendancy to the top levels of society.

      • Cuckoo says:

Hi baria! Don’t be delusional. How are they at the apex. His fortune is modest compared to the billionaires of our age and she’s barely working. They run a teeny foundation compared to people like gates. Lawyers typically aren’t influential unless they are in the judiciary, at which point they are no longer lawyers but judges. Check out the Forbes and other biz lists for the real big players – who aren’t vaguely interested in publicising their royal connection or namedropping incessantly like these two, because they don’t need to. George is so clueless.

      • Janice_from_friends says:

        Effortless?

  29. RoyalBlue says:

Amal can wear a sack and still look good. She is always impeccably put together and this is no exception. I love them.

    • Eagle says:

Hardly. This is one of the few occasions when she does look good and appropriate (not upstaging). I love this look but she is a fashion fail 90% of the time. And don’t let the good satorial choices she sometimes makes detract from what these two are trying to do – it’s all self-promotion in the end, hardly world-saving stuff. Donating 1%, 5% of your income, act like you’re now a saint, and say/do nothing about inherent structural inequalities: noblesse oblige and that’s the passe Clooneys in a nutshell. Me, me, me.

  30. Nessie says:

I love this. I think Amal is so so striking and often does really interesting fashion. Even the weird stuff she wears sometimes is at least interesting. And her looks are unique (meaning you don’t often see her ethnicity and features in the mainstream celebrities), so I love seeing what she wears. This look I think is perfect and her styling as well. Her hair is to die for.

  31. Annie says:

I like it, but I’m a sucker for a jumpsuit.

  32. Dako says:

She looks amazing, radiant, beautifully styled, he looks just like himself and they look great together. I am always amazed at what people read into these photos, the slightest angle, smile, touch, or glance is laid over with the poorly informed, usually negative assumptions of the viewer, which they insist is absolutely God’s truth. The truth is that you are watching a staged performance, a few moments of posing while emerging from a vehicle – try as you may there is very little information revealed upon which to make an informed judgement about much of anything substantive.
