The ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ teaser trailer is here & it is absurd

ouatih poster

This morning, the Hollywood Reporter put out the word that the Cannes Film Festival is prepared to mark the 25th anniversary of the Cannes premiere of Pulp Fiction at this year’s festival. They are apparently gearing up to give Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood a grand Cannes premiere on the exact 25th anniversary date, May 21st. Which is what most of already assumed, but it’s getting closer to reality now.

So now that the terrible posters have been revealed and the Cannes unveiling is being firmed up, the studio decided to finally debut the first trailer. Let’s watch it together.

Yeah… I get that it’s just a teaser and all, but yikes, this is so underwhelming. When Leo crying on cue is the best part of the trailer, maybe it’s a poorly cut trailer (or just a bad movie). And what is the stupid AF voice Brad is doing? He does the same voice in Inglorious Basterds and a half dozen other films. It’s his dumb-redneck drawl. It sucks. And Margot as Sharon Tate… ugh. I can’t with this.

Those posters are dreadful. Given QT’s attempts to go as period as possible for the movie, it does not look like 1969 at all.

    • SarSte says:

Horrible posters. What is up with the photoshopping on Brad’s head??? Legit looks like a 6 year cut his face out of a magazine with and pasted it on a different body.

  2. Jegede says:

    Intrigued.

    I like it.😉😉

Needs a little Luke Perry though.😢

    • Jan080 says:

      I agree! Looks interesting!

    • boz says:

+1 Anyone interested in LA in that time period might want to pick up Inherent Vice by Thomas Pynchon. (Also, it’s a movie.) It offers an interesting perspective on how the Manson murders altered the mood and vibe of LA, putting a definite end to the summer of love. Anyway, this movie looks like an exploration of that. Hope it’s a worthwhile take.

      • oliphant says:

thanks box i’ll purchase that- fascinating time. and i agree the film looks intriguing, and it is only a teaser.

      • Amy Tennant says:

Sounds good. I also want to recommend the excellent coverage the You Must Remember This podcast gave the summer of Manson and the Manson relationship to Hollywood.

      • Jegede says:

        Thanks @boz.👍👍

        I’ll look it up.

    • BooRadley says:

I think it looks interesting too. and I’m sorry, Leo still remains one of the greatest actors in my opinion. Quentin is smart, I think boz is right that this movie may be coming at the murders from the angle of its affect on Hollywood and less and sensationalization of the acts themselves. Hopefully!
i’ll probably wait till I can watch it at home though, its definitely not a theatre movie to me.

      • VirgiliaCoriolanus says:

Django is one of Leo’s best roles to date, imo. So I am interested in what he pulls from Leo this time.

      • Case says:

        Agreed!

      • smcollins says:

I know QT & BP aren’t going to get any love on here (mostly), but I’m really looking forward to seeing this and the teaser has definitely elevated my enthusiasm!

      • Wowwow says:

I thought Leo was genuinely scary in Django. The relationship between his character and SLJ’s character was awesome (hints at a romantic partnership).

    • Littlefishmom says:

Yes! Not a fan of QT but I definitely want to see this. I’m excited!

  3. line says:

The teaser is just incomprehensible, in the sense that the plot of the film remains very fluo.

    • Sigh... says:

If I was the typical moviegoer, not knowing/caring much abt this movie supposedly being framed around the Tate-Labianca murders, I would think this looks like yet another flix abt 2 hammy wht dude actors at a “certain time” in Hollywood…being hammy at a “certain time” in their careers (art imitating life?). Even Tate and (who I guess to be?) Manson are barely shown and recognizable…

      Maybe that’s the hope/point…? But then why…?

  4. Biff says:

That was….crap. And I hate hate hate Leos voice in this!

  5. Hmmm says:

Why is brad Pitt playing himself? Leo is overacting and brad is underacting and phoning it in. It kind of just made me want a Bruce Lee biopic but not directed by Tarantino. Also why are they making a joke out of Sharon Tate’s murder.

Is this supposed to be a an awards contender because it doesn’t look like it and the box office might not do so well either seeing as its opening a week after the freaking LION KING. I have a feeling the lion king will be number one for at least 2 or 3 weekends.

Well I hope it does well because Pitt has to pay his child support.

    • SK says:

Considering her sister approved the movie once she had read the script, I highly doubt they are making her murder a joke. I wonder… I feel like perhaps he is more showing the joy Sharon had in her life and the murder itself will not be shown – it will just be a devastating blow when the news is heard.

      • LivePlantsCleanAir says:

I lived through the original time when the news was heard. It was indeed devastating. It kind of changed the way we all looked at the world….the end of our innocence. I was in grade 9 at the time so about 14 years old. It was brutal. It was bloody. And terrifying to me as a young, teen-aged woman. I won’t go see it. I won’t spend a dime on this movie. And I agree Leo did some of his best work ever in Django. 100%

  6. anp says:

Reality check the film and poster look terrible.

  7. Cindy says:

Tbh I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to judge a movie just based on the trailer. This could be a lot better than what the trailer shows. It’s 2 awkwardly edited minutes of a 2-3 hour movie. I actually appreciate how vague the trailer is. We already know what the story’s about and how it ends, anyway.

But I’m not excited. I think Tarantino has lost his touch tbh… Inglorious Basterds was his last good movie. Django had some moments, but it was a pretty forgettable film in general. And I thought Hateful Eight was AWFUL. The main reason I don’t care for this is the cast though. I’ve grown so exhausted by Leo’s overacting. Never cared for Brad Pitt as an actor. And Margot Robbie is just a sexier Emma Stone to me – a fine actress but not as good as Hollywood wants me to believe.

  8. Veronica S. says:

Brad Pitt’s character sounds like a retread of his one in Inglorious Basterds, except it makes no sense here.

  9. line says:

Dicaprio ne tourne pas beaucoup de film comparé à des acteurs comme Liam Nesson or Amy Adams .But I think unlike before, there are many more articles on his private life and his philanthropic activities.

  10. Abby says:

I feel like I don’t understand any of what I just watched. No idea.

    • rahrahroey says:

      LOL! Same.

    • OriginalCarol says:

Yours not the only one. I am more confused than ever before watching that crap. Pitt is supposed to be a stunt man for his superstar friend but yet from the trailer, one would think he’s the superstar just like his buddy Leo. His ego couldn’t handle being second best eh. And yeah his stupid voice again. Does he think to do the same trick over and over and folks are not gonna getting tired of it? Delusions much.

  11. mtam says:

I don’t get it. i know it’s just a trailer, but are they really taking the awful story of Sharon Tate’s murder, and instead of focusing on her and her story, they star two men who were kind of adjacent to her? From the trailer it just seems it’s the men’s story, and that Margot will be played for eye candy and (knowing Tarantino’s M.O.) female violence exploitation.

    • VirgiliaCoriolanus says:

Sharon Tate’s sister read the script and supports the film. So I don’t think Margot Robie’s role will be exploitative. I am wondering if the film either ends just before the murderers when she is on a *high* or is literally some alternate history/timeline where the murders don’t occur? It is the most intriguing part for me, tbh.

That was my only mark against the film though. I thought it was beyond terrible to make a film about her murder and release it on the anniversary of her death…even though it is done all the time for less famous people, etc.

      • mtam says:

I don’t have high hopes because of Tarantino’s involvement (to me he is known for how exploitative his films are–and this is coming from a former huge fan of his), but I really hope you are right, and that her sister gave the green-light for the right reasons, and that the film will somehow aim to honour Sharon’s memory.

      • VirgiliaCoriolanus says:

I don’t think it’s a matter of me being right–she publicly endorsed the film.

I enjoy “true crime” esque films and tv shows, so while I am sympathetic to Sharon Tate and her family, etc…this really isn’t out of the norm, even if the film was about her murder and only her murder. I feel like most of the outrage is because she was a young blonde actress cut down in her youth vs. actually how horrifying the story is.

    • mtam says:

When I said “I hope you’re right” I just meant I hope it’s true it won’t turn out exploitative, not that i was questioning what you said about the sister.

If the film was just about her murder that’s different, i just get the impression from the trailer it will be from some detached males’ pov, and with Tarantino at the helm, i worry that it will be problematic. and just because something is “not out of the norm” doesn’t mean we should all just accept it.

“I feel like most of the outrage is because she was a young blonde actress cut down in her youth vs. actually how horrifying the story is.”—umm i think the outrage had mostly to do with the fact that it was a gruesome murder, because yes it was horrifying.

  12. Usedtobe says:

I’m totally in for this. Think it looks extremely entertaining, whatever the storyline may be.

  13. Jada says:

Bruce Lee impersonator is hilarious. I actually laughed loudly at that part!

Btw, Sharon Tate’s murder is not the central part of the film and her sister approved of the script. And with QT’s penchant for disregarding historical accuracy, I would not even be all that surprised if Manson ended up dying rather than Tate.

  14. Tanya says:

I liked it. But, I’m a Tarentino fan. Oh well. You can’t judge movies based on trailers.

  15. Hanahk says:

Considering her sister approved the script after being vocally against it, I wonder if this will be a movie where history is revised. Perhaps Sharon Tate gets some revenge a la glorious bastards and Django unchained.

  16. L says:

So the movie is described as a comedy-drama and the plot is centered more around Leo and brad trying to make it in Hollywood than Tate’s murder. After looking at the cast tho, there’s a lot of people cast as those that were in the Manson family and the ones who were killed that night. I think the murder will be shown, it is a Tarantino film after all.

Side note: casting Damian Lewis as Steve McQueen is excellent, at least looks wise.

  17. glor says:

Oooh….this is MY time. (But what stupid music they chose for this clip!)
Hate the obsession with the Family, it’s the same with Altamont. But heck……I want to see this. (Tarantinos 9th film? Golly it feels like he’s made at least 29 already).

And gawd forgive me, but I think Brad the Elder is blo%dy gorgeous!

  18. Amide says:

    Brad’s aging nicely.😊
You wouldn’t know he almost had a decade on Leo.

  19. Linda says:

Can’t wait to see this movie.

  20. alyssa calloway says:

I’m glad this trailer doesn’t make me excited to see the movie. I was wary of it just bc of my feelings about things that have come out about Tarantino and the fact that Emile Hirsch is in it. But those are just my feelings obviously.

  21. anp says:

Please does anyone really believe Pitt could play a stuntman in this overrated film?

    • Hmmm says:

No. His acting seems flat because he’s not playing the main actor. LoL 😂 he has too much hubris to play second fiddle to Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio seems to be having fun hamming it up tho. It just seems creepy to have comedic bs in a movie about one of the worst murders in Hollywood.

  22. Angelina says:

    So excited!

  23. OriginalCarol says:

Seriously who are these one-liners? They are coming out the of woodwork eh. Paid for trolls by Pitt? LMAO. Guess it’s a do or die for him since the last few ones flopped so bad.

  24. Lucy2 says:

This looks… Terrible. Is the trailer trying to imply that it’s some fun, zippy movie? That wouldn’t really fit with the real life crimes it touches on, and I feel like whoever put that together thought it was funny, but it just wasn’t.

  25. Skipper says:

    Looks like Quentin Tarantino.

  26. Adrien says:

OMG! Mike Moh is spot on as Bruce Lee. He even speaks like Bruce Lee. Good Job to the casting crew for finally nailing Lee and not select some random Asian dude without any likeness to Bruce.
