Duchess Kate steps out in jeggings for a Scout Association event in Essex

We haven’t had any Duchess of Cambridge appearances all week until today. Duchess Kate stepped out in Essex for an event with the Scouts, an event which also marked the 100th anniversary of Gilwell Park. She’s planting an oak sapling today too. Kate has been “volunteering” with the Scouts since 2012. I thought, at the time, that it would be a great patronage for her, but in the past seven years, she averages maybe one Scouts-related event every two years. In 2016, it was pointed out that she hadn’t done anything with the Scouts in two years.

As far as I can tell, Kate seems to have repeated most of the pieces of her ensemble today. The sweater is probably a J.Crew piece she’s worn before. The black jeggings are back. I don’t know if the jacket is new, but it looks familiar. She was greeted with flowers and apparently spent time with the kiddos and parents. The Scout Association is launching a new pilot program for kids aged 4 to 6, because of early childhood development and all of that. Basically, that’s part of Kate’s wheelhouse now. Speaking of, whatever happened to the launch of Kate’s big new initiative? In early February, we heard that Kate threw a party at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the nearing conclusion of this mysterious campaign/research/initiative. And it’s been dead silent ever since. When will we, as a society, admit that Kate keen-baited us with that one?

    She looks good.
I have said it before, but I never thought her intitiative was going to be launched in the beginning of the year. The year is long, there is still time.

    • Jan90067 says:

I like her look for this event (though hair in a ponytail to crawl around in tree dens would’ve worked better).

But, where are the costs for each piece??? Even the repeats??? THE CHLOE (designer) BOOTS gasp!!! THE COST!! OMG, WONT ANYONE THINK OF THE COST??? (Clutching my pearls and falling into a dead faint into the very conveniently placed fainting couch).

      (Yes, sarcasm 😊)

    • sequinedheart says:

I love the boots. These suit her more than the repeat college boots.

  2. ByTheSea says:

Her jeggings irk my soul. It’s the rare occasion that jeggings are actually appropriate. This might’ve been it, but they still look off to me.

    • Megan says:

I saw honest-to-god jeggings at Loft last week. I am not on board with the jeggings come back.

    • Shrute’s beet farm says:

But I don’t think these are jeggings. They are just fitted jeans to me.

      • LORENA says:

yup, all my jeans look like this. I hate bootcut

      • Becks says:

You’re right, they are not jeggings. They look like skinny jeans to me. As a matter of fact, I wear a variation of this outfit regularly, its cute and casual. However, my pieces are Madewell, much more affordable!

    • LivePlantsCleanAir says:

@Lorena…I LOVE boot cut cause it sort of evens things out. In straight jeans, my hips and butt look HUGE! Boot cut forever, even bell-bottoms are good for me!

    • isabelle says:

She looks great in wider leg pants.

    • Veronica says:

Jeggings work alone if there’s some give to them and they aren’t overly tight. Otherwise, they’re vaguely…I don’t want to say vulgar, but it’s basically just wearing leggings as pants to me? It’s the same uncomfortably tight, somewhat unprofessional look to me. I always wear mine with sweaters or tunic length tops because it always looks off to me if they’re on the tighter side. I get the appeal of straight leg/skinny jeans over boot cut for a lot of people, but the fabric makes a huge difference in how it looks, IMO.

  3. Erinn says:

I want the sweater and the boots. The jacket is nice too. Jeggings I’m meh about. I think it’d look better with a slightly looser skinny jean rather than a thinner tighter version, but it’s not the worst. No need to shield the children from the horrible woman wearing tight pants or anything.

    • Enn says:

I like jeggings because I have no junk in the trunk and most regular jeans, even skinny ones, get saggy in the rear during one wear. We all know Kate is junk deficient as well, so maybe that’s why she loves jeggings?

      • Erinn says:

That would make sense. I have junk in the trunk (thankfully flatteringly shaped) and still wear them from time to time. I just usually wear longer shirts or sweaters if I am wearing them. I’m definitely not anti-jegging.

      • glor says:

I think they look perfectly fine; it’s Scouts not the Women’s Institute annual scone judging bash..
If I had those legs those jeans would be in black leather, with a Keith Richards tee shirt…and *then* there’d be muttering!

    • Millenial says:

I do love the boots as well.

  4. TeddyPicker says:

Does anyone know the procedure for how a royal and their patronage interact? Do the Scouts request Kate to come to XYZ and she chooses (infrequently as it seems) or is it the other way around and KP lets the Scouts know Kate’s availability? Do the patronages get a ballpark on how often they can expect a Royal per year?

  5. Kittycat says:

Jeggings, I just dont get it.

    • Bella Bella says:

I feel like these jeggings are — dare I say it — unseemly. There’s way too much information apparent. She must be awfully thin to still look so thin in pictures, but I really have no interest in seeing the space between Kate’s thighs!

  6. LizB says:

She looks fine. I wish she would try a shoulder length cut for her hair. I also am no fan of the jeggings, but Kate is Kate.

I thought their excuse for not taking a lot of patronages was so they could be more hands-on and involved ? Guess not.

  7. RoyalBlue says:

Ugh the jeggings are back. Wish she would wear proper skinny jeans.

    • Tiffany says:

Never. Kate likes to show off her legs.

      • Wilady says:

I think she has great legs! She’s thin, but she obviously has muscle tone and looks like a runner to me. Wanting to show off ones legs is better than self loathing to me any day lol.

      • Bethany Karger says:

If she had huge breasts, would she be showing them off with skin tight tops with lots of cleavage showing? Would that be appropriate for this type of activity?

      • Nic919 says:

How is it an excuse to wear tight clothing for a work event if your legs are thin? Do fatties have to cover up?

    • R says:

Maybe they don’t look nice on her- not every style work for every figure and she is extremely straight so even a skinny jean could look baggy on her since she doesn’t have anything to fill them out where as a jegging forms to her figure.

  8. CindyP says:

She can never get it quite right. Hiking boots, jeggings or skinny jeans, casual pea coat, turtle neck sweater & full blow out. How about a pony tail?

    • Lolly says:

At what point do we realize how critical we are of Kate (and Meghan)? A ponytail, really?

      • HK9 says:

We don’t realize it. I found myself a few years ago scrutinizing a navy suede pair of shoes Kate was wearing (because I wanted ones like that) with my nose up to my computer screen. I realized what I was doing and gave my head a shake…that kind of scrutiny is ridiculous and I needed to relax. 🙂

      • Nikki says:

        +1

      • Wilady says:

Lol. Seriously. It used to make me think everyone in public was like this, and I’d wonder how many people would be picking me apart everywhere I went like they do here, but then I stopped GAF (mostly. It creeps in sometimes)

      • CindyP says:

Uhm, the name of this site is “CeleBITCHY”, not the New York Times.

      • Linda says:

        @Lolly
Good question. I just hope that we, myself included are not this critical of people in real life.

      • jules says:

        Right?

      • Nic919 says:

People on their high horse about a gossip site maybe need to get over themselves.
Also I look forward to everyone posting these same comments on a Meghan post but somehow I doubt I will see the same reaction.

  9. Digital Unicorn says:

The outfit is fine, am not going to comment on the skin tight jeggings as she will never stop wearing them.

That big initiative is like everything else she is keen on, it never materialises into anything more than a PR stunt to make her look like she’s doing something. Plus given the current political climate, it will go down like a lead balloon. And on top of that what new ‘research’ can she bring to something that has been heavily researched on in the last 20 or so years!

  10. Lisa says:

Kate looks nice. I like her casual looks. I wouldn’t hold my breath for that big initiative.

  11. Cee says:

The problem with her jeggings is that, at least to me, they’re too tight. A size up would look better! And this is definitely a good outfit for the kind of event.

    • manda says:

yes! They look like when someone has gained weight and they don’t really accept it (here, I don’t think she has gained weight, she just buys them too small). Jeggings are tough though because it is easy to go to tight but it is also easy to go too big, and that looks really bad too

    • Lady D says:

Yes. One lousy size bigger and she would look perfect.

  12. Simon the Bird says:

You can see where her thigh curves in before it meets her ladyparts.
    TOO TIGHT

  13. another kate says:

I always affectionately lol at all the jegging hate. You will have to pry mine off my cold, dead, skinny legs.

  14. Becks1 says:

I think she looks nice. This is definitely her “playing outside with kids” uniform lol but it looks nice. I agree that I thought we would see her do more Scouting events.

  15. Nic919 says:

Shouldn’t she be visiting all her patronages annually? She only has about ten of them at this point. The only one that gets annual visits is Wimbledon.

    • Melanie says:

I like how you (accurately) described what she does as “visiting” not “working”. I know that in her capacity as a royal “work” will be something different for Meghan but unlike Kate I think her approach will be more hands on and meaningful – not simply “keen”.

    • Bluthfan says:

She’s lazy and will continue doing the bare minimum she can get away with. I’m curious to see if she gets any big patronages from the Queen this year like Meghan did. The Queen has to know that if Kate gets them, they will be neglected.

  16. R says:

She looks lovely, I hate the thing around her neck but I am thinking it is tied to scouting (I didn’t join scouts so I don’t know) the jacket is great, the color of the sweater looks nice on her and the pants are flattering.

Her hair looks great too, and honestly I think she shines when she is with kids.

    • Swack says:

If you look at the young blond lady in the first picture she also has the same thing around her neck as does the man in the last picture. So would assume it is part of the scouting thing.

    • Lady D says:

In my part of the woods, that is called a necker and it needs a precise number of twists. The wooden knot that some neckers are closed with belong to Scout leaders only. I spent eight years volunteering with the Scouts organization and they really wanted me to become a leader. It involved winter survival training which consisted of being dropped off at a national park in the area in winter. I was expected to dig a snow cave and survive for a weekend. I did have a pack of supplies, and I am an avid camper but I hate winter so that was just never going to happen.

    • Prairiegirl says:

It’s a “necker” and part of the Scouts uniform.

  17. Mego says:

    Keen-baited. Good one!

  18. CarrieUK says:

I think she looks great, I’m a massive fan of jetting, I find actual jeans too restrictive and I’m constantly hoiking them up! I’ve got 3 small kids so I’m all over the place and find jeggings stay put….they can do no wrong in my eyes!!
Decend jegginfo just look like skinny jeans to me 🤷‍♀️

  19. Eyeroll says:

This is Kate’s classic outdoors look and it works. Also it’s all a bit more low key and affordable than some of her looks (the boots are the ‘See by Chloe’ range is which is more affordable and high street-esque than the main brand supposedly).

I will never get the jeggings/tight jeans hate here. Both Kate and Meghan like the tighter denim look – and if I had legs like theirs I would too!

  20. vava says:

I think she looks trashy in those jeans. The jacket is ill-fitting as well – I hate that jacket. The sweater is OK, as are the boots but the rest of this ensemble should be sent away.

  21. Eeeeeeetrain says:

I cannot imagine how thin she appears IRL.

  22. Mary says:

Jeggings are unprofessional and hers are so tight they are wrinkly and pulling.

  23. Casey02 says:

At this point with Kate it’s like Jeggings -check, booths-check, park-check, school children-check, inappropriate smiles-check….substance- not so much! And I use to like her..LOL

    • Erinn says:

      wtf is an inappropriate smile?

      • Casey02 says:

When you’re the only person smiling. It’s a Kate thing. WTF you haven’t noticed Kate laughing as if something is hysterical and everyone else around her is either not smiling or has just a hint of a smile. Just notice her pictures moving forward, it’s rather odd.

    • Amne says:

Someone theorized she’s high half the time, which I doubt. It’s more like, “Okay, paps are going to be taking photos so SMILE!” It’s wooden and not genuine, and she just can’t fake real enthusiasm.

      • MsIam says:

I think it’s because her face doesn’t look saggy when she is smiling. (Sorry!) Remember the pictures from that Commonwealth service where everybody talked about how old she looked? It’s just a fact of life that gravity/aging takes hold of everyone, and when you are thin it becomes even more apparent. Of course genes play a role too. It’s why they make those fillers. It’s hard when you are constantly being scrutinized for every little thing by the people and the media.

    • Elisa says:

That’s actually one of the things I can relate to because when I’m nervous, I also over-compensate with smiling a lot.
Her outfit is fine, it’s all repeats and her usual outdoor uniform.

  24. Elisa says:

She could simply task someone with the actual work and then present the results/be the face of the campaign. And in this case it would be easy because tons of material is already available. And even if the results are that not much has changed: she can bring a lot of awareness to mental health issues which are still a huge stigma. 🙁

ups, this was meant as a reply to Digital Unicorn but ended up down here…

  25. aquarius64 says:

Meanwhile Slick Willie is going to New Zealand to represent the queen for the commemorations of the shooting that killed 50. NZ’s prime minister asked only for William and not Kate. Since Meghan and the pm get along and Meghan has a gift from her the crazies will claim Meghan is undermining Kate again.

    • MsIam says:

@aquarius64 that seems odd that the pm would ask only for William and not Kate. Why wouldn’t the wife not come? Is it for security reasons, I wonder? Maybe they feel the crowds would be too large if they both came?

  26. Natalia says:

    “Kate keen-baited us” hahahahahaha

  27. MeghanNotMarkle says:

The only people who got keen-baited are the ones gullible enough to still believe all the keen malarkey after all this time. Of course there was no substance to follow the announcement.

More painted on jeggings that need to be a size larger. Snooze.

    • Olenna says:

+1. Meanwhile Meghan, working from home while heavily pregnant, continues to be harassed and demeaned by not only the press (Forbes) but a major so-called charity (BAFTA). Sickening.
