This year’s Met Gala will be on May 6th. We’re less than a month away. Over the years, I’ve grown to love covering the Met Gala – it’s so much less stressful than the awards season, because I don’t have to sit there and watch a four-hour awards show where a white savior bullsh-t movie wins Best Picture (I’m still salty AF). This year’s Met Gala theme is “camp,” as in campy fashion, costumes and glitz and cheeseball rhinestones and glitter and drag. I’m actually looking forward to seeing how attendees interpret the theme – I was pleasantly surprised by last year’s “Catholic imagination” theme and how people interpreted it, and I think “camp” is broad enough for people to have a lot of fun, especially with vintage styles.
The co-chairs of this year’s Met Gala were announced months ago: Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams and Alessandro Michele of Gucci (which is serving as a co-sponsor). With a Gucci-associate as co-chair, I would assume that many people will be dressed in new and vintage Gucci. Don’t wear the vintage Tom Ford-for-Gucci stuff though, that’s not camp enough.
Anyway, with only weeks to go, Anna Wintour is finally releasing some additional information about the guest list (from THR). Here are some of the names she’s confirmed from the 183-person guest list (so far): Bradley Cooper, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o and Jennifer Lopez with fiance Alex Rodriguez, Bryan Lourd and Ryan Murphy, Cher (unconfirmed, but there are rumors), Tom Ford, Donatella Versace, Miuccia Prada, Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli and Givenchy’s Clare Waight Keller. Also: Annette de la Renta, Wendi Murdoch, Sean and Alexandra Parker, Venus Williams, Cam Newton.
I’m really looking forward to seeing what Venus and Serena Williams will do for the theme, and what Serena will do as co-chair. Also: it looks like both Serena and Venus will be skipping the “mandatory” tournament in Madrid this year, I guess? Serena skipped it last year. They both basically play whenever they want. I’m also looking forward to seeing how women like J.Lo and Lupita interpret the campy theme. I’m not looking forward to Blake Lively though – you know exactly what she’ll do, show up in a glam-princess dress and call it a day. Gaga will bring it though.

Fashion show, fashion show, fashion show at lunch! Cannot wait, this gala is a yearly highlight, even though the attendee list has gone severely downhill.
The great part about “camp” theme is even if a designer’s aesthetic is clean and simple lines they can throw on some accessories (hat, bag, shoe, jewelry) that can take it easily into camp. No excuses for safe looks.
As they said the theme goes from Marie Antoinette to now, so I’m hoping someone does a full powdered wig with butterflies and macarons sticking out.
Serena has no style……I am excited to see what Harry Styles wears!
The Met Gala has become fashion’s Coachella for me where celebrities show up, misinterpret the actual meaning of the event, use it as an extended pap stroll instead, and the tacky outfits my god 😫. I feel like with the theme being “camp” we’re going to get the haute couture versions of what these celebs wear out on the red carpet with the few creative rule followers. Which basically makes it another red carpet and nothing really special anymore *sigh*
You just know Kendall Jenner will show up wearing something almost nude, because being 90% naked every year is very ~fashion.
A few years ago the theme was “punk” and I swear only Madonna bothered to follow the theme (and was ridiculed for it). Dumb ole Goop showed up in a hot pink dress and claimed it was punk-inspired. Sure, Jan.
Sarah Jessica follows the theme every year (which I appreciate) Her look for punk that year was a amazing mohawk hat.

Same here! Always thought she is overrated fashion wise.
Surprised to see Reynolds as confirmed too, as he is shooting a movie in Europe and I thought I read somewhere he would be shooting along with Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek until the end of May.
If RuPaul and John Waters are not invited, this event is meaningless.

I’m excited about Cam Newton. He usually has unique and an unwavering dedication to his own choices. Can’t wait to see what he wears. Like others have said, many go with what they think flatters them, whilst barely pretending to follow the theme.
It’s mentioned in the THR article that the committee list is not reflective of the actual Met Gala guest list, so I guess it’s possible that some of these people won’t actually be at the event.
Looking forward to what any Black Panther attendees wear – they all have amazing style and aren’t afraid of risks.
Also keen to see what Harry wears for the same reason.
