Kim Kardashian shows off her minimalist, bland AF home in a Vogue video

@KimKardashian is used to being underestimated. If the media mogul/beauty entrepreneur/soon-to-be mother of four’s next act—studying law—seems unlikely, perhaps it shouldn’t. "This is the daughter of an accomplished attorney and the mother of three black kids who is using her full power to make a difference on a tough issue and is shockingly good at it," says @CNN commentator and activist @vanjones68. Jones brings up the Elle Woods character from @legallyblondemovies as perhaps the only archetype we have in the culture through which to understand such an unlikely turn of events. “But she’s so much deeper than that,” he says, “because the gravity of the issues she’s taking on is so tragic and all-pervasive. I think she’s going to be a singular person in American life.” In many demonstrable ways—for better or worse—@KimKardashian already is. But if she were to pass the bar, it would be the most surprising rebranding since @Barbie got woke, a case to be studied at @harvardhbs for years to come. (Indeed, she has been invited to speak at Harvard later this year “on branding and media.”) “I love to be put in a situation where I can have a conversation with someone who might not be inclined to think much of me, because I can guarantee they will have a different opinion and understand what’s important to me after they’ve met me,” @KimKardashian says. I have a lot of crap in my house. As much as I want to be a more minimalist person, I just end up accumulating so much STUFF. Magazines, books, shoes, clothes, furniture, the tchotchkes of life, man. And I’m a single woman with a cat! I can’t even imagine how much sh-t would be in my house if I had kids. The toys, the child paraphernalia, the kid-made gifts, the drawings I couldn’t throw out, and on and on. So how is that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s home is so…minimalist and stark? I know that HIS style, but they have three kids! Where are the toys? Where are the strollers and tchotchkes and magazines and books?

After once claiming that they would never put photos of their forever-home into the public sphere, Kim and Kanye allowed Vogue’s cameras into their abode. I imagine it was one of several prerequisites for putting Kim (solo) on the cover of the May issue of Vogue: she had to give Vogue a big exclusive (the law school breaking news) and she had to allow Vogue to photograph inside the West-Kardashian home. I’ll admit it – I enjoyed this video just for the chance to creep on their interior design and layout (which is nonsensical). Behold, Kim’s “73 Questions With” video:

Kim’s bragged about how her kids are super-quiet and well-behaved in previous interviews, but in this video, you get to see the kids behaving like… typical kids. Adorable, annoying, sweet, needing attention from their parents. I also think that the kids would probably be quieter or better behaved if they were allowed some kind of intellectual stimuli? Where are their toys? Chicago rather desperately wants to get down and crawl and play and do her own thing but Kanye keeps holding her back. Saint is clearly his mom’s doll – they seem very attached to each other. And I wish North was in school, damn.

Going back to the interior design… I expected all of the white and beige and, I mean, it’s a look. I don’t think I expected everything to look SO blank and basic though. Sure, it’s sort of blandly beautiful, but I would love to see some pops of color, something, I don’t know.

I’m sure there are kids rooms with tons of things in them, but it wasn’t included in the video to maintain the aesthetic.

    • BengalCat😻 says:

That’s what I was thinking. I’m sure they have several rooms they can close off to keep their crap in.

    • AnnaKist says:

I agree. Still, I recently spent eight weeks in a public hospital. My room had more character than those rooms in the video. I mean, bung a big vase of flowers in, at least.

      • BengalCat😻 says:

I couldn’t look at those barren walls everyday. I love my clutter of vintage posters and folk art. There has to be a happy medium, lol!

    • KidV says:

That house is big enough, they probably have a “normal” house within the house, through secret doors, where all the color and toys are, and the kitchen is a constant mess.

      • me says:

They said they have a “staff kitchen” and then a “show kitchen”. They said they usually hang out in the staff kitchen. Honestly though, why do you need a “show kitchen”…for whom? Those poor kids probably get in trouble if they even walk into one of the “show rooms” that are off limits. LOL we had a room in our house growing up we weren’t allowed in…with the “good sofas” lol. It’s funny because years later those “good sofas” were donated for free…had rarely been used but were very outdated. I say if you buy something USE IT !

    • Huh! says:

The house reminds me of Beetlejuice!

    • BchyYogi says:

When rich AF it’s easy to have vast clean spaces, vast storage and 24/7 pick up your SH*T all day service. My house looks like the set of Roseanne, and whilst somewhat disturbing, I have a tiny space for a family of 4 & housekeeper is typing away here on a CB post insteadA cleaning!!

  2. Lucy2 says:

That is not a house that people live in. Especially not people with several small children. And if it is, that’s really sad. No toys, no photos, no artwork on the walls, no books, nothing.

    • C says:

No wonder Kanye’s mental health is getting worse…that house is so depressing!

    • Tiffany :) says:

I couldn’t get through the whole video, but it looked like there were no doors? No doors between the front door and the bedroom? I wouldn’t feel secure with that much open space between my bed and the front door. No doors between the bedroom and the kitchen? People making breakfast would wake me up!

The generic beige with no human touches and no doors made me a bit anxious, honestly. I’ve seen open floor plans and modern designs that I’ve liked so much better than this. I’ve never been so disturbed by home decor, and I don’t fully understand why, lol.

      • me says:

I think that bed is a guest room or for the staff…why else would it be on the main floor and not upstairs?

      • Tiffany :) says:

I also realize that a house with very little stuff would be much easier to film in. When filming, they probably have at least 4-8 crew members in the room along with the people actually on camera. Maybe this is more like a sound stage than a home?

      • Megan says:

My house is a mid-century open design. The furniture, window treatments and rugs are all very neutral because we have a huge art collection thanks to several profoundly talented friends who are professional painters and sculptures. Kim’s house is perfect for a fabulous collection.

    • moco says:

What does one even DO in all those rooms with nothing but a white couch or a couple of chairs? I don’t get it. Their stuff must all be stored somewhere, so if they want to read a book or play a game, do they always have to retrieve it from some hidden closet and then walk all the way back across the house to white sitting room #4?

  3. minx says:

I don’t believe Kim and Kanye spend much time under the same roof. So, I can’t really judge whose house this is.

  4. Loopy says:

It seems that she just let’s Kanye get whatever he wants..its exhausting being with some one that seems to never comprimise. This is all him I wonder what he will name the new child.

  5. Nev says:

    Love the aesthetic. Everything.

    • meh says:

      THIS. Love the minimalist vibe.
She showed , what I’m assuming, a small portion of the house. I’m sure the kids rooms and other rooms are more “livable” but probably still fall under Vervoordt’s design aesthetic.

    • FHMom says:

      I love it, also.

    • minx says:

I love a clean minimalistic look very much. But I need a little color, art, books.

  6. Muffy says:

There’s a reason Spongebob is making that face.

  7. Erinn says:

    OH. MY. GOD. Those babies.

I did love the glass wall with the plants right up against it outside. It’s the same with all of the sisters though – I really like bits of their homes. But not the overall house so much. If I could pick and choose pieces from each of the houses, tailor is down, and get rid of a lot of the white (not all the walls though – some white looks really sharp with bold prints) I’d be incredibly happy. Balance out the over decorating from parts of Kylie’s house with the emptiness of Kim’s, and it’d be great.

Kanye is back on medication, right? His face looks fuller again.

    • C says:

The kids are beautiful. They really make beautiful babies ☺️

    • Lightpurple says:

In the snippet from the interview yesterday about her lawyer goals, she said he is not taking medication

      • Erinn says:

Interesting – I missed that. I only have so much Kardashian attention span. In the past it seems that he usually would gain some weight with his meds (and I don’t even think it looks bad on him), so I guessed that was the case again.

    • elimaeby says:

I thought Kim said in the interview that he couldn’t take medication? I might be remembering wrong. But also, THOSE BABIES! They make some crazy-beautiful kids. Damn.

      • ME says:

That’s probably why they keep having kids, each one is so gorgeous it’s an ego boost for them. Plus really I think Kim wants her own “West” Empire. I highly doubt her kids are going to have normal jobs.

      • Erinn says:

        I had missed that part.

I really hope those kids grow up without feeling the same level of pressure about their appearance as their mother/aunts. I don’t have incredibly high hopes, but the hope is there. I just can’t get over how much they’ve grown!

  8. runcmc says:

If she pulls this off, she has the chance to be the next Angelina Jolie in terms of rebranding.

    Yeah, I said it.

    • babsjohnson says:

Lol, I said it yesterday and was mocked. But let’s talk about it again in 5-6 years.

      • broodytrudy says:

I saw the response too and rolled my eyes. Like no one in history has ever successfully re-branded themselves. 🙄

    • Swack says:

I always have a wait and see attitude. Things with Kim seem to get a minute of her time and then she seems to move on to the next thing that will get her more publicity.

      • ME says:

Remember when she said she was going to run for the Mayor of Glendale…that was about 5 years ago. She never did it.

  9. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I could never ever ever live that minimally. Think mediterranean/spanish mission…that’s my love. I have pots, pans, baskets, etc. hanging from ceilings. I love hanging chilis, garlic, herbs. I love bottles of different oils and vinegars in the kitchen as well my bathroom lol. Tons of pillows, tons of super soft throws, tons of pretty trays so you can sit anywhere and do anything. I love vibrant colors to come from wall art and pottery. I basically need to see pleasing things wherever my eyes land lol. I even enjoy my husband’s and sons’ huge ass book collections.

    • VintageS says:

I agree. Love that as well as eclectic bohemian.

    • Snowflake says:

      Oh I love that too

    • lucy2 says:

My house is an old Victorian, I love antiques, and am an artist, so there is a LOT to look at in my house, and I love it.
I do like a lot of the designer’s other projects though, even though they’d be too minimalistic for me personally, there’s still some warmth and texture. Kim’s house though, looks like an empty shell, like a house for sale with a few pieces of furniture installed for scale.

  10. dlc says:

That was super dull. The house looked like a museum that the artwork hadn’t been put in yet.

  11. Carnivalbaby says:

IMO Kim is OCD. Never forgot watching couple of epis of KUWK where she was giving Rob her weird rules for staying with her and when she screamed at the ex husband for jumping on the bed. Kanye thinks he got a prize so he is putting up with it. But this just screams obsessive compulsive to me. She is Monica from Friends.

    • KidV says:

Monica had a closet stuffed full of junk. It was very messy. I’m wondering how big Kim’s junk closet is.

  12. CharliePenn says:

I looooove the look and feel of her home. I’m VERY minimal, especially if there’s a nice view to nature like she has out of all her beautiful windows and doors.
I’m no millionaire but I do manage to keep a few spaces in my home minimal: our living room, adult bedroom, up and downstairs center hallways, and our dining room. But our playroom and kitchen and kids rooms and bathroom are all kid spaces! When I am old and no longer have kids in my home my husband and I will probably return to the extreme minimalism of our pre-kid life.
I do think she needs some rugs up in there. Kids love to be on the floor. And I would bet anything that the kids have bedrooms and playrooms that are stimulating and full of stuff.
But minimalism in some spaces is good for children also! The mind can rest and settle and go where it needs to go without as much interference from objects, colors, visual noise.

Ugh why am I such a fan of Kim lately?! lol.

    • broodytrudy says:

I love it too. It’s gorgeous and very peaceful looking. Consider all of the energy the kids and Kanye put out, it makes sense. My house is normally decorated and i find myself chucking things all the time just to try to clear out the busy energy.

That’s obviously not her kid’s room. I’m sure that’s a guest room or the day “play room”. I can’t imagine kim would be dumb enough to show the layout of the house and where her kids sleep with all the crazies out there.

  13. Swack says:

There was a picture elsewhere of North and Penelope in school uniforms going to school. A comment was made that Penelope was wearing $400 shoes. So don’t know if North is in school or not. She should probably be in Kindergarten at age 5.

  14. Tw says:

There kids are BEAUTIFUL. My god

    • Erinn says:

I hadn’t seen a photo of Saint in a while – and he’s absolutely stunning. All of them are. But I love so much that he wanted to name his brother after himself haha.

  15. Allie says:

I’m sure they have a full staff, so it’s probably not that hard to contain all the stuff of their kids. Imagine if you could have someone cleaning up after your kids all day. Your house would look free of kid stuff too because someone else would be working hard all day to put all the stuff back in closets and drawers after they were done with it.

    • Swack says:

I hope whoever is picking up for those children is making them help. Even Chicago can help pick up things.

  16. Amy Tennant says:

i love Chi putting her hand in Kanye’s mouth

  17. VintageS says:

You said it all when you wrote this, “SO blank and basic though”. Kim: blank and basic. Add in bland for good measure.

  18. launicaangelina says:

That house is screaming for color. I love bright, bold colors and a rustic Mexican aesthetic. I refurbish furniture and paint animal skulls, antlers, and horns. I love having bright Mexican blankets as couch covers. My kitchen is yellow.

Seeing Kanye smiling with Chicago was cute.

  19. Anonymous says:

    North is in school…

  20. ChillyWilly says:

She can smell when someone has a cavity? Huh?

  21. FHMom says:

Sweet, smart and kind. Oh my.

  22. JinnyBye says:

I love it. I lived like that (but cheaper) when I was single and it was awesome. I find it so relaxing to just be in a clean, simple, minimalist space. Having a bunch of stuff around me just stresses me out, even if it’s nice or sentimental stuff. No stuff is peaceful.

  23. Paisley says:

I understand the concept but it’s not my bag. Those children need stimulation; i.e. lots of color with a picture on the wall.

  24. janet says:

I love it. The home is not to my taste but gave me peace thinking how much more the kids are able to run around the house without much hazard. Also, this is the first 73 questions that didn’t feel super rehearsed to me…except for when she called Kris, everything else i loved.

  25. Case says:

Most of these 73 Questions seem super scripted, but this one weirdly does not feel that way at all. I’d expect Kim’s to be the most scripted of all, lol! This is a nice video — Kim comes across as really sweet. I like the aesthetic, because I’m also into minimalist decorating.

  26. ME says:

In the Vogue article the writer said she went through the garage door where she saw 9 baby strollers and even more car seats ! What do they need that many for? They have a play room because you can hear Saint asking Kim many times to take him to “the play room”. Saint didn’t ask Kanye that, just Kim. Lastly Kim isn’t in Law School. She needs to stop saying that. It’s an apprenticeship…does she know the difference?

  27. Katashae says:

Wow three things struck me in this video:
    1. Kim IS SO VAPID. She’s obviously smart and savvy in a lot of ways and works hard. No knock on her from that. But damn, that is one superficial, bland woman. I wouldn’t want to have her at a dinner party.
    2. Kanye seems exhausting and immature. Another one I wouldn’t want to have at a dinner party.
    3. It seems like…Kanye and Kim aren’t super comfortable around each other? Or maybe just don’t spend that much “home time” together. Just seemed awkward somehow.

    • ME says:

They did a good job making sure the nannies, maids, and chefs weren’t seen in the video ! I can’t believe Kim finally admitted Kanye dresses her. She’s been denying it for years.

    • Case says:

Seeing Kanye in this video made me feel kinda bad for Kim. He seems impossible to have an actual conversation with — he just makes weird, immature comments and all she can do is laugh awkwardly. I know he has always been a little unhinged, but this was really odd.

      • Katashae says:

Yeah that struck me too. As in, imagine being that poor interviewer while Kanye pipes in with those weird, immature comments and Kim is just like “hehe”. You said it perfectly, he didn’t come across as someone who could have a real conversation, or listen, or even relax. I’ve dealt with bipolar people before closely and even when on their regular medications you kind of have to walk on eggshells (in my experience only). So it made me feel kind of sorry for her.

      • Erin says:

Yeah, and I take no pleasure in observing this, but something feels very very off with Kanye. His affect is disassociated, his lack of appropriate eye contact, the strange timing of his responses. Her strained laugh when he makes a comment. Uff. Brain chemistry is such a mean bitch, and it feels like we’ve had so few real advances in dealing with mental illness in the last few decades.

    • Laura says:

Thanks for watching the video for me, I just can’t. But your summary is pretty much what I would expect.

    • jules says:

Omg started to watch the video and couldn’t finish it. It’s SO bad. Kanye is like a robot, Kim’s face is scary, and it all just felt so staged and fake.

  28. Grant says:

I thought this was cute. I like the spartan feel of the house and their kids are precious. I especially loved the interaction between Kim and Saint. I agree that they seem particularly bonded and as a proud Mama’s boy, that resonated with me. Something is happening within me and I’m finding myself warming up to Kim, particularly within the past few months. What is happening?!

  29. savu says:

I hate the house, but man do those people make beautiful babies.

  30. Laura says:

It’s been said before many times. Money can’t buy you class.

  31. Usedtobe says:

My take on the video (I have watched this woman talk maybe 5 times in my life but I watched this. It’s Friday morning at work and I’m avoiding working I guess).
    1. Kim is FAKE. Not only in her looks but just her demeanor. She seems uncomfortable with what she’s wearing, with her hair (which looks awful I’ll add). Like can you not just be less ON. I can’t explain it really but she just seems so so phony. I would probably not have minded watching this if I felt like we had just interrupted her on a nice day with her family, in some leggings, barefoot with her hair in a pony. I know it’s not her but it just seems so uncomfortable. I do not believe for one second that this woman has any idea who she truly is.
    2. The children are absolutely beautiful.
    3. It was nice seeing the banter between her and Kanye but I got the feeling she warned him before the camera guy came not to say anything. She seemed nervous that he’d say something to embarrass her. I do believe there is love there.
    4. The house feels like a tomb. I love cozy, homey feeling houses, not a museum.

    I still can’t believe I watched that…LMAO!

  32. Kathryn says:

I actually like Kim and admire how she parlayed what she had to work with into a giant empire but man, if she isn’t the epitome of the Godiva “chocolate” scene from American Psycho.

  33. ivy says:

Most of the time, before a magazine comes and shoots the inside of a celeb’s house they literally offer to bring in an interior designer to redesign the place. That’s likely what happened here. I’m sure it hasn’t always looked like that.

  34. Lizzie says:

    she ruined her face

  35. SM says:

I consider myself a person with a no unnecesery/non practical home policy but damn. This is another level. Some books are a necessity unless you never read a book in your life. I also have a kid and we have a policy of tiding up and putting all the toys in their places at the end of the day. But his room is filled with toys and kid’s books. Also some paintings, flowers, candles all take a home a bit more warm, so while not overdoing it and doing it in style I also consider that as a sort of necessity.

  36. olala says:

Vogue is dead. That’s all I have to say

  37. shells_bells says:

I wouldn’t usually watch a KK video, but I’m really into real estate and home interiors so I gave it a shot. I ended up fast forwarding it a lot because for some reason it made me uncomfortable to watch, something about the interactions seemed too forced (but I guess they would be if a random person was in your house asking you questions) and she wasn’t showing much emotion. Not sure.
Anyway, I prefer a warmer home and would not feel comfortable living, or even hanging out), there… What if you spill red wine? You’d probably never be welcomed back.
Also, I think Saint was saying something along the lines of “I want to go to my playroom” so I’m guessing there is at least one room designated for kid stuff.

    • me says:

I heard Vogue gives them the questions ahead of time and they do a “run thru” practice video before doing the actual one. That’s why so many of the answers seem rehearsed.

  38. kim says:

there’s a difference between minimalism and zero personality. It seems like Kim falls into the zero personality and boringAF category. It’s not a shock or surprise, because she has her focus on fame and not inner self, that’s her prerogative. What will be interesting is how many women try to copy the basic beige of it all. . . it’s not sophisticated or stylish …it’s like people who wear all black …zero creativity, vision and plain lazyAF.

  39. Emily says:

I watched this yesterday and this is probably the worst 73 questions I’ve seen. This isn’t a minimalist house, it’s more like a showroom. All I could think was “sterile.” I realize they probably did a thorough cleaning and kept all the kids’ toys away hidden in their playroom or bedroom. I get that. But there’s hardly any artwork on the walls or family pictures anywhere. No coffee table books, NOTHING. Maybe the rest of the house is more lively looking but this is so dull, bland, and devoid of personality. It was so boring and I shudder to think at anyone who would want to live in such a bare environment. I don’t think you need a ton of stuff to make a house a home but the gray/white tones do not create a warm environment at all. And I’m guessing the bedroom they showed wasn’t Kim and Kanye’s and I was weirded out by the fact the bedroom seemed to have no doors? The layout of the house was really weird too, it just didn’t seem to have a natural flow.

Also Kim was super awkward in this. These are of course staged and rehearsed but she seemed just as dull and vapid as her house. She really needs to take elocution lessons if she ever wants to be taken seriously as a lawyer, the constant vocal fry and upspeak do not help. The kids are cute and it was clear Kanye was instructed to speak as little as possible. When he does, he is petty and it’s so clear he hates being on a tight leash.

  40. Steph says:

Wish granted-North and Penelope go to the same private school.

  41. Shannon says:

I watched this yesterday, and I spent more time than I needed to wondering about that house. I mean, the blankness of it all was just so weird. I did like the glass wall and it was neat to see their kids acting like adorable, normal kids. But I assume the part of the house shown in the video is just for things like photo shoots and entertaining. There’s no way anyone, let alone kids, actually does much “living” in that part of the house.

  42. Pixie says:

I couldn’t make it through the full video. She looks and sounds so stupid.

  43. Velvet Elvis says:

I would call their decor, mausoleum chic. Very cold, stark and impersonal. The look is totally Kanye’s asthetic, not Kim’s. Reminds me of his clothing line in which everything is so bland and devoid of color or joy. I dont get why Kim allows Kanye to impose his horrible artistic visions on every aspect of her life. She used to have her own style and taste and I dare say it was better than his.

  44. Elle says:

My answer to everything when it comes to her is, vanilla. She is always to be found wanting. But in regard to her taking mentoring lessons and practicing law – it’s good to see she is taking life seriously. Now after years of neglect, she will need to set out a good case against all of those kittens who have legal representation 🤣

  45. Lena says:

This house to me is just ugly. And Kim acts so awkward it hard to believe she’s been on camera for like 16 years (or it feels like)

  46. Alyse says:

My theory is, they may have gotten rid of all of their artwork off the walls (which we can all assume would cost $$$) to avoid potential burglary/home invasion?
After the Paris/jewellery incident, apparently incited by showing off her jewellery on social media, maybe they don’t want to show off all of their wealth in a way that’d risk their security in a similar way??

    PS super adorable kids

  47. justwastingtime says:

I love minimalist homes and hate this one, including the kitchen which is frankly just too big, who wants to have an enormous commercial kitchen in the middle of their home unless they are serving a 100 meals a day?

As others have said, the home is devoid of art and further it is missing the indoor outdoor flow, the very best thing about living in SoCal.

As an aside, Kayne and Kim paid for private firefighters to save that house and many people thought that was horrible. I was grateful as it freed up public firefighters to save homes west of them in Calabasas and Malibu, including mine.

Edited to add that I muted the sound while I watched cause I have literally,, never, you know been able to listen to more than like a couple of sentences out of any of the K Klan’s mouths without muting. Bible.

  48. Nana says:

That is one minute forty five seconds of my life that I will never get back.
