Amber Heard details Johnny Depp’s horrific abuse in a response to his lawsuit

72nd Venice Film Festival - 'The Danish Girl' - Premiere

In March, Johnny Depp filed a defamation suit against Amber Heard because she… referred to herself as a survivor of abuse. As a term of their divorce, both Amber and Johnny signed NDAs that limited how they were supposed to speak about each other. In those years, Amber has been pretty cryptic about what happened during their brief marriage, but yes, she has made public references to being a survivor. Depp, on the other hand, is still obsessed with Amber and with “punishing” her for leaving him and for telling her side however cryptically.

The defamation lawsuit was about an op-ed Amber wrote where she once again referred to herself as an abuse survivor, but she didn’t name Depp as her abuser. He sued her anyway and claimed that she was the abuser in their marriage, which was enough for all of the Depp stans to claim that everyone had gotten it wrong from the start, like the defamation suit wasn’t just the latest salvo in Depp’s campaign of abuse against his now ex-wife. Well, Amber and her lawyers have responded to Depp’s lawsuit with a lengthy and detailed court filing – you can read the full Page Six coverage here.

“Violent” Johnny Depp became “the Monster” on drugs and booze, then beat, strangled and tormented his then-wife Amber Heard, she alleges in a new, harrowing court filing. Heard, who was married to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star for just over a year until she filed for divorce in May 2016, claims in horrific detail that Depp repeatedly hit her, ripped out her hair, choked and nearly suffocated her in a Virginia court filing in response to his $50 million defamation lawsuit against her.

Heard states that she began dating Depp in early 2012, “About a year into our relationship, I began to witness Johnny abusing drugs and alcohol … On some occasions, when Johnny simultaneously used both illegal narcotics and prescription medications I have had to get him medical attention. Whenever he was using, I worried for both of us. He would become a totally different person, often delusional and violent. We called that version of Johnny, ‘the Monster’.

“Johnny often would not remember his delusional and violent conduct after he came out of his drunk or medicated states. … Because I loved Johnny, I had believed his multiple promises that he could and would get better. I was wrong.”

[From Page Six]

I would suggest everyone read at least some of Amber’s legal filing. She details some incidents we’ve heard about before, like the time Depp kicked her in the back on a private plane in 2014, after which he apologized and sent his people to get Amber to come back to him. She details the time in March 2015 (a month into their marriage) that Depp went on an ecstasy bender in Australia and started slapping her and shoving her. When she tried to barricade herself into one of the hotel rooms, Depp broke through and basically spent an entire night beating on her and throwing things at her.

Amber says the only times she ever struck Depp were in self-defense, or in the defense of her sister Whitney. During one incident, Depp was coming after her and Whitney got in between them. Amber was scared that Depp was about to lunge at Whitney and shove her down a flight of stairs, so Amber punched him in the face “to draw his attention away from her. That was the only time I ever hit Johnny.” The abuse didn’t stop there – it went on for months as Depp continued to “pick fights” with Amber and repeatedly create situations where he could slap her, punch her, choke her and more. When she told him – mid-assault – that she was leaving him, he told her he would kill her, and then he tried to kill her. I believe Amber. I believe her about all of it.

I believe her. What horrific abuse.

    • BchyYogi says:

Johnny is likely has violent tendencies, but he and his buddies idolize the late Hunter S Thompson’s drug binges and glamorization thereof. IT should be said that HST violently beat his first wife. When his 2nd beautiful young wife was at the gym, he called her on the phone and told her to listen to the sound of him shooting himself, suicide. Johnny clearly has ghosts and is trying to make the R&R lifestyle cool & scarfy- drugs were never cool, they ruined HST, an entire generation and are keeping JD down…

      • Leah says:

Yes! I read the whole Page6 article and the arduously unreadable text poems he sent her through his assistant and the narcissistic, nonsensical lines he’d leave written for her during his violent scenes at home are frankly embarrassing. He’s a boy without an original identity and is using his drug and physical abuse as an excuse to be just like HST. Disgusting and pathetic.

      • Kathryn says:

I didn’t know that about HST but I recently read The Rum Diary and the way he casually writes about how one of the characters slaps his girlfriend occasionally as if it’s a line of dialogue is troubling. And it ultimately serves no purpose in the story it’s just kind of like, he slapped her. Anyway…. It bothered me because it was completely unnecessary in terms of the story of character development but ran throughout the whole thing and the men in the story were whatever about it.

    • C says:

I believe her too. I read yesterday about the finger thing…omfg, horror movie!

      • em says:

        I believe her.

      • Steff says:

There are pictures of it and the message he wrote in his own blood on the mirror. He suspected Amber was cheating on him with Billy Bob Thorton. I knew when Johnny claimed Amber was actually the one who severed his finger that it was bs because of that mirror message.

      • Steph says:

        What’s the “finger thing”?

      • Tiffany :) says:

Steph, he cut the tip of his finger off when he was bashing his phone against the wall while in the middle of a violent episode. When she returned to the home, he had written on the walls with his blood.

    • tealily says:

Yup. Everything about her statement rings true.

    • Ronaldinhio says:

I think we ignore how lucky she was to survive that relationship.
Strangulation is a massive red flag when assessing risk and it seems like it was one of his methods of abuse. This plus his drug abuse put her in real danger. This has been down played massively.
      He could have killed her.
I’m glad she escaped him and survived. I 100% believe her
(Defence of self or others from harm is not evidence of her abusing him)

      • Otaku fairy... says:

This. She could have died. Hearing all these details of how she suffered makes the way she ‘s been treated from the time she first came forward up to even now in certain spaces- and not even just by the right or by men- more infuriating.

      • Alyse says:

Yup, strangulation is often the step before actual murder in abusive relationships…

    • Lindublin says:

I believed her right from the start when everyone was calling her all sorts of names for talking about the abuse.

If Johnny were a not white star, he’d have been damaged and hated like Chris Brown.

  2. Darla says:

I will tell you something, the internet reactions to this story are one of the reasons I stopped ever going to another site I used to occasionally visit. You all know it, but I dont think Im supposed to say it. And no it is not the daily male, it is a site similar to this one.

It is very upsetting to me the misogyny that is online, and even, sometimes especially! from women directed at other women. Amber and Aj seem to attract the most vicious of it at certain places. It’s disgusting. And yes, I totally believe Amber.

    • cannibell says:

There’s nothing in it for her to disclose this and so much of the discourse on the internet is a landfill bonfire. That’s why I’m so grateful for this site, and it’s not just because of CB & Crew, it’s because the level of discourse is so high-level. I appreciate all of you so much.

    • Everley says:

      Dlisted?

      • Darla says:

        yep

      • Megan says:

I stopped reading D-Listed when this story first broke because I was so appalled by the comments.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

I don’t mind DListed but Michael K needs to do something about the trolls, its out of hand. I never read the comments anyway as its always the same trolls posting sh!t.

      • Otaku fairy... says:

+1000. Digital Unicorn, your point about accountability is spot-on.

      • C says:

I read the story there….but I didn’t read the comments.

      • tealily says:

Yeah, the comments over there suck.

      • Sandii says:

MichaelK actually closed the comments. It must have been hellish.

      • Branvoyage says:

I went over to dilated to see what the comments had to say about this today, a surprising amount of people believe her too. Of course there are people who act like they are both to be blamed but ppl suck like that.

I also stopped reading that site awhile ago but it was because there started being you won an iPhone or a gift card pop ups all the time and it was driving me crazy. The format also just won’t fit with my phone either.

      • Ader says:

Yeah, I had to walk away from Dlisted a while ago, too. Michael K can be funny, but the people over there are god awful, and the advertising has gotten out of hand. I get that these sites need to make money. And I truly sympathize with that. But if a site freezes up your computer 90% of the time you visit, it’s time to move on…

      • otaku fairy... says:

For a bit of positivity, you all should take a look at how the commenters and mods at Pajiba are handling this story. The energy over there is much more progressive than the shenanigans that go on over at… The Sh*thole That Shant B Named. 😀

    • Erinn says:

Someone on my facebook went on a huge rant when his statement came out saying “SEE. SEE. Why did we write him off so quickly!?” and it made me so angry. But her mom just also died this week, and I feel like maybe she was EXTRA idiotic because she knew her mom was dying (cancer) when that was posted. So I refrained and didn’t engage because it’s just going to make me super angry.

    • Lilah casting says:

You can add brie Larson to that list as well women speaking their minds or defending themselves seems to be a worst crime than rapist.

      • Otaku fairy... says:

        For real.

      • Xi Tang says:

@lilah literally just escaped from a thread ripping Brie to shreds. The most nauseating thing is that it was a conversation between liberal women.
There’s a video of Brie saying that she did her own stunts and Hemsworth rolls his eye at her and says that she’s gonna be the next Tom Cruise. Brie responds that she’s gonna be “first me”.
These women took offense that Brie stood up for herself and are worried that she’s “gonna ruin the fun and should be more like scarjo”.

    • Anna says:

Yeah, as a survivor of abuse, the reactions to Amber have been really upsetting.

I also believe her explanations of the situation and don’t think it’s surprising that she may have hit Depp back. My dad was my abuser, and growing up, there were absolutely times where he’d go too far and I hit him back/physically fought with him. It was dangerous and stupid in retrospect, but I was obviously afraid and genuinely in fear for my life. Just because Amber sometimes fought back doesn’t mean he is somehow absolved of his behavior.

    • Steff says:

@Darla I unfollowed an instagram account that only posted pop culture horror stuff when they randomly made a post celebrating Johnny suing Amber like that automatically cleared him. People in the comments were salivating and celebrating it while calling Amber horrible names. Also, Amber’s account is riddled with these trolls in the comments.

    • Carol says:

I’m not a fan of Amber Heard and do think she uses men for what they can give her – Depp/fame, Musk/money. But I am inclined to believe her claims that when Depp was on some bender, he was violent towards her. Maybe in the past, his violent outbursts were confined to throwing furniture and punching walls without attacking his girlfriends (as they claim) but his drug and alcohol use seemed out of control when he married Heard and it wouldn’t be too huge of a leap to think he became physically abusive towards Heard during this time. I hope he gets the help he needs for the sake of his kids (nobody needs to see their father drunk and stupid or attacking loved ones) and any future gf. And I’m glad Amber is not backing down (assuming her claims are true).

      • Lindublin says:

        I always believed her.
As far as using. He used her too for his aging ego . Hollywood men drop their wives or older girlfriends on ego and go to younger women.

      • Shockadelica says:

Excuse you? She did become more famous after getting with Depp but if she’d stayed, she would’ve gotten more fame. And Elon was never her husband for her to get anything from him! She never made these men date her. And SHE LEFT THEM. She’s in a billion $+ movie, I think she’s fine.

      • Carol says:

@shockedelica Yeah, I think she is doing fine too. And I never claimed she should have stayed with Depp (or with Musk for that matter). I don’t think her fame, after getting married to Depp, would have kept increasing through the years either. Doesn’t mean she didn’t use Depp for fame to begin with. But what do we know, right? We don’t know any of these people:)

  3. LoonyTunes says:

Good. For. Her. Seriously, he thought he would bully her into giving up her Aquaman money. Truth is an absolute defense. I’m glad she went this route. Air his a$$ out.

    • Megan says:

I hope JK Rowling reads every word of her filing.

      • hnmmom says:

SAME. I refused to see the new Fantastic Beasts movies because of JKR’s doubling down in her love for Depp.

      • Jess says:

Megan, that was my thought too (after I thought about how loathsome Johnny Depp is). Shame on JK.

      • Coco says:

Ditto. Haven’t watched any fantastic beasts movies either. Husband watched it recently and asked later why I left the room when it started and we had a whole discussion about Depp and JK Rowling. He doesn’t follow any gossip so had no idea. We also discussed why I don’t watch anything by Woody Allen, Polanski, Singer, among others. There is so much good content out there that I don’t feel like I’m missing a thing by not watching their films (or of their outspoken supporters). Much better options for me to enjoy and support.

      • Molly says:

I can’t watch the new Fantastic Beasts movie because he’s in it and I refuse to support him or the entire franchise for keeping him.

    • ByTheSea says:

Watch him try to get the docs and proceedings sealed. Now I would subpoena every single one of his enablers and have them testify under oath. This appears to have been happening in front of a lot of people, who did nothing to help.

      • Agirlandherdog says:

Honestly, the man is a moron. And his lawyers are obviously morons. She had to sign an NDA! If he’d just gone about his life and left her alone, it would have blown over. But because of his filing, she can now spill ALL the tea, and he can’t do shit about it! And even if (big IF) a judge seals the docs, it will be leaked. What she went thru is not a laughing matter. At all. However, the fact that he was stupid enough to sue her and give her an excuse to get it all out in detail makes me positively giddy.

  4. runcmc says:

I believe her too, and my heart BREAKS for her that she’s being forced to relive this whole nightmare because Depp won’t let her go in peace and it breaks for her because of all of the toxic dudebros on the internet who are so happy to throw her under the bus and believe any BS depp sells them.

This reminds me of Sofia Vergara/Nick Loeb (or whatever his name is). It’s not about the legal case. It’s about forcing yourself into her life by whatever means necessary. These men are gross.

    • Eleonor says:

      So this.
He cannot let go, he has to torment her over and over.

    • lucy2 says:

The situations are similar in that way.
I’ve never understood that – if someone doesn’t want to be with you, move on! But then again, both of these men are abusive narcissists, so I’ll never understand it.

I’m very glad Amber got away from him before he killed her, because that’s where it was heading. And I hope she (and Sofia) someday soon come to an end of their legal nightmares.

  5. Jay says:

I believe her. Screw this guy.

  6. Snowflake says:

I believe her too. Remember when he was on 21 jump street and punched someone there? Remember when he was with Winona and trashed a hotel room? He’s always been bad news, it sickens me how people defend him

  7. Sash says:

Johnny Depp is a horrible, horrible human being and I am appalled by the amount of support in his corner.

    • PlainJane says:

His supporters remind me a little bit of the Deplorables in that they will continue to believe despite the mounting evidence against Depp.

      Depplorables!

    • Alyse says:

Yep, I stopped being a fan because his work stopped being enjoyable… but I don’t want to give him a chance now. He generally seems like a sad douchebag, without all of this included.

I believe her. I support her.
And she was great as Meera, so wish her every success in her future!

  8. NotHeidisGirl says:

I believe her. Glad she got out when she did.

How stupid does he have to be to think she would not defend herself now?Random fact: “Depp” in German basically means “idiot”, so…

    • Sue Denim says:

I think it’s part of the abuse cycle, he can’t let go or move on, needs to feel in control, needs to keep engaged in fighting with her, needs to keep hurting her…it’s sick…and so sad for her…

  9. Digital Unicorn says:

I believe her and I hope she ruins him, he’s only going after her cause he needs the money.

Hmm, wonder what that hypocrite JK Rowling is going to say about all this – will she still insist on casting him in her FB series? Probably.

    • Darla says:

I wouldn’t spend a penny on anything he was in. It’s so disheartening that he continues to be cast

      • Kcat says:

I had seen all the HP films until JK cast that piece of sh!t. Had to explain to my kids that I refuse to support abusers with ticket sales.

I used to love Rowling and her Twitter account. Now I get angry whenever I think about her.

      • Megan says:

Yeah, I really wanted to see FB, but I don’t want Depp to get a penny of my money.

      • Cee says:

Yeah, I skipped the last film and will not watch the final one.

    • bears says:

I adore all things Harry Potter related. But I haven’t seen any of the FB movies and that is 100% because of Depp’s presence in them. He’s a fat-headed, delusional drunk who hits women so it makes it an easy choice to ignore any movie he so much as has a walk-on role in.

  10. Rapunzel says:

It’s no coincidence that this defamation suit conveniently cropped up after Amber had an extremely successful film in Aquaman. And Johnny’s Fantastic Beasts movie did not do very well and he is in financial hot-water. He only cares about this “defamation” cause he wants money. You know he thinks Amber owe him everything.

    • Purplehazeforever says:

FB did just fine but Aquaman was extremely successful…I mean I think it was the most successful? Aquaman was? It grossed close to 1 billion. FB did 191 million, that’s hardly a failure.

      • LoonyTunes says:

It’s a failure for that franchise.

      • Mia4s says:

FB is a failure for the franchise. It made $159 million, not $191 million and only about $650 million worldwide. On a $200 million budget plus advertising that’s barely adequate to make a very modest profit. Not to mention it was poorly received generally which means further drops can be expected. AWFUL for a tent pole franchise. There’s a reason shooting is delayed, they are panicking big time!

For the record? I didn’t like Aquaman at all (terribly acted, gave me a headache). And I believe her.

      • Purplehazeforever says:

191 million was actually on the low side but it still didn’t meet projections…but it wasn’t a failure. FB didn’t meet Harry Potter projections, if that’s what you’re alluding to. And Aquaman blew everybody out of the water…hands down. It was very successful.

      • Cali says:

@PurpleHazeForever Yes, FB was not a failure and the best of the 2 of course it’s not gonna do HP numbers but $650 million is pretty awesome and Zoe was the star IMHO, they will need to move on from Johnny however even though he was great in his role (but another actor can be as well), these details are pretty horrific and JKR is not going to be able to go around this fact. I loved Aquaman and all its cheesiness and happy that we’ll be seeing another one soon.

    • Really says:

Aquaman did 1.148 billion , it was successful and totally agree with you.

  11. Jennifer says:

I think every abuse survivor can believe her account of events. And it’s a rare DV victim that keeps their hands to themselves 100% of the time. Abusers love the reactionary abuse because it gives them cover, a way to say “she’s just as violent!” When it’s only happened because of the abuser’s violence and in self defense.

    • WingKingdom says:

I watched my dad abuse my mom for years and years. One day, the most gentle and nonviolent woman on earth smacked him back. He was absolutely delighted and constantly referred to her “hitting” him from then on as if it were a regular occurrence. He brought it up during the divorce. I think in the face of a constant barrage of violence, a person might become violent in response. I believe Amber 100%

By the way, my mom got out and found a man as gentle as she is to spend her life with.

      • Beli says:

        Good for your mom.

      • MOT says:

I just got out of a violent relationship. Started with horrible verbal assaults and throwing and hitting things…then throwing things…then grabbing my throat and hitting me.

I fought back and hit and he said “you’re violent too and have anger issues”. When you stay in a relationship like that (because after they are so sweet and apologetic and you can’t see the truth) eventually you cower in the corner or fight back

        I absolutely believe her

      • Jennifer says:

That is wonderful for your mom. I also had a similar experience and now married to a very gentle, kind and loving man (something my abuser told me didn’t exist and also no man would want to be with me because I have kids, any man I dated would cheat on me, and on and on). Joke’s on him though because I truly am living a peaceful happy life with everything good he said I could never have.

    • otaku fairy... says:

“Abusers love the reactionary abuse because it gives them a cover, a way to say ‘she’s just as violent!’ When it’s only happened because of the abuser’s violence and in self defense.”
So true, in so many different ways for women and other abuse victims. It sucks when people look at victims who get angry or retaliatory and see that as proof that it didn’t happen, because ‘she’s not afraid of him/them, etc.’ As if people can only have one emotional response to abuse.

    • isabelle says:

Abusers often select people who will help trigger their behavior so they can use that excuse. They choose out of their abuse not healthy mind and their victims will often have their own challenges.

      • Jennifer says:

A few of the top traits abusers look for are kindness, loyalty, empathy, honors commitment, and not selfish/very giving. It is such a Myth that victims of DV are usually already “broken” women, when in fact it is most often the abuse that creates these problems. The abuse is the cause of the woman’s issues, not that the woman’s issues attracted the abuse. What is usually the case if an abuser picks an already troubled woman, she has likely already been abused and the conditioning has already been done for him and makes his brainwashing easier. Don Hennessy wrote an amazing book on this subject, he calls them psychephiles and believes they are comparable to the way pedophiles operate and can not be cured.

      • Isabelle says:

Agree, abusers often pick the opposite of themselves so they can manipulate them and then set themselves later as the opposing figure in their lives. They tend to select good & accommodating women. Its hard to do that if they pick someone like themselves.
Don’t agree agree on women not being attracted to abusers. If you are from a abusive background or believe you don’t deserve love and kindness, people choose out of their pain many types versus their “love”. It can be very subconscious and you have no idea you are doing it but very possible to be attracted to a abuser because you believe he cares (see controlling behavior as love) or he is what you deserve.

  12. Eleonor says:

I believe her, and she has every right to call herself a survivor.

  13. cannibell says:

Just read the Page Six piece. Harrowing. She is lucky to have gotten out and he is truly a monster.

  14. Lucy says:

    I believe her, too.

  15. Deanne says:

He’s a monster. How horrific for her. I believe everything she says he did to her and I hope she ruins him.

  16. Nikki says:

Does anyone know the legalities involved? I believe her, but wonder if she signed a non-disclosure agreement, can her interview cost her legally??

    • Goldie says:

She didn’t give an interview. This horrific info is coming from court documents that she filed in response to his lawsuit. He’s the one who sued her, so she has a right to defend herself.

  17. Naddie says:

Proof that people who do charity and good things for those in need can be total assholes as well. He should be in jail, for real.

  18. Seraphina says:

I went to link posted above and all I can say is oh wow. Crazy she stayed with him. And even crazier that these people saw what he was like and didn’t do anything about it. Just let it keep going. And what in the hell are “handlers”???

  19. C-Shell says:

Either Depp has the most incompetent legal counsel on Earth, or he has found lawyers who will do his delusional bidding for the payout. Filing this defamation suit was an open invitation for Amber to layout the grisly facts in detail without violating an NDA. I hope this buries him under a mountain of ruin — financial, professional and personal. What a vile excuse for Homo sapiens.

    • Chaine says:

Exactly. If he wasn’t bringing new attention to this, he could have continued to bide his time for a comeback, since most of Hollywood didn’t seem to care about her allegations…

    • Miffy says:

Legal counsel would stand to make so much money from this whether he wins or lose, why would they advise him otherwise?

      • LadyT says:

Lack of professional integrity. Depp has officially lost it. I don’t even have words to describe how out of touch and destructive his life has become. That’s all on him. I still have a separate problem with all his camp that’s watching him circle the toilet and sticking around for the money grab.

      • Nicole(the Cdn one) says:

Because ethically we have to. Despite what people think, the vast majority of lawyers are ethical and serve their clients with integrity. We give advice, it is up to the client whether they take it or not.

And even an unethical one would not fail to give proper advice in these circumstances, because Depp could sue for negligence and if they didn’t advice him, it would be a pretty open and shut case.

      • Nicole(the Cdn one) says:

Um, so the details (apparently substantiated) of criminal acts would not be made public? Of course the lawyers make their fee regardless, but there are ethical considerations and disciplinary rules that apply to all lawyers about advocacy.

  20. Endlesscircles says:

I believe her. I myself was married to a narcissist so it doesn’t shock me Johnny filed defamation — he literally does not see his part in any of this. Delusional, grandiose mentality. I had to record my husband’s abuse on the sly because I knew no one would believe how Mr. Wonderful to the Public was a monster behind closed doors. Truth be told: the fact that she isn’t believed is abuse on top of abuse…..it’s trauma upon trauma because you feel like there’s no justice and that people get away with crimes. To add insult, my ex-h cut me off of all money, hid money then claimed he had none when it was time for court and alimony. He got away with it. But he has to be him, and Johnny has to be Johnny. I applaud Amber’s courage.

100% believe her. Otherwise “wonderful” people are entirely capable of also being monstrously abusive to their partners. On some level, I think everyone knows this – even his most ardent defenders. Or maybe it just seems obvious to those of us who’ve been on the receiving end of similar abuse, or who’ve watched loved ones go through this. Abusers are people too – complex and full of contradictions – and many of them are extremely charming and lovely people until they start beating the crap out of you.

    • isabelle says:

He has a history of abuse and violent behavior. This is the same guy that destroyed a hotel room because he was upset. Look at his past there is nothing wonderful about him.

  22. Lala11_7 says:

Johnny will continue to do anything he can do to punish her…because he’s obsessed with STILL controlling her…and at this point…he’ll destroy himself to get to her…hence this asinine lawsuit…

    I hope she’s EXTRA careful…

    • Marlene says:

Yeah, that’s my impression as well. He doesn’t give a rat’s arse about his own reputation at this point. It’s all about harassing her. He’ll spend his last penny just trying to get back at her.

  23. Vv says:

The abuse is horrific and obvious, I believe her.
But the no. 2 thing pissing me off continually about this story is the fact that everyone around this monster did NOTHING. his bodyguards, managers, friends, handlers – they all stood by and WATCHED this happen in some cases, and in others were dispatched to get her back even though she tried to leave.
I mean, money is a great motivator but you have to have a pretty black soul to actively watch someone get beaten and do nothing even though you could overpower the abuser with one hand

  24. serena says:

I’m so utterly disgusted by him, I cannot watch any of his movies anymore even though they were my favourites.

  25. Case says:

Even though it shouldn’t have surprised me, I was really taken aback how quickly people were like “OMG we’ve been wrong this whole time, Johnny is innocent! Poor wittle Johnny!” when he filed the lawsuit against her. People want so badly for her to be the villain in this, and I think it shows quite a bit about people’s internalized misogyny. Of course she fought back, and of course someone as delusional as Johnny would turn self defense into “she abused ME!” in his mind.

I used to be a big Depp fan and dropped him the second this story first broke years ago, because in my heart of hearts I believe Amber. I always will support her. Depp has a known temper and no one can say he hasn’t CLEARLY been battling drug and alcohol problems for several years. It’s quite obvious how this seemingly decent guy could turn toxic fast. And it’s also quite obvious how a very wealthy man could wave his money around to cover up the abuse and make Amber seem like she’s lying. My heart breaks for her, but I am SO happy and proud of her for fighting back against the lawsuit.

  26. otaku fairy... says:

That’s definitely a possibility for some of it- deplorables and bots flooding certain articles to stir up hate. But a lot of it is just casually spewed by long-time regulars- many of whom are at least anti-Trump, pro gun-control, anti-racism, and swear that they’re better than the religious right.

    • Darla says:

I know exactly what you are referring to with this post, and I did feel that some of the really bad stuff was coming from regulars. It is really befuddling. I got into it with one of the women there, the last I checked she is still there and she is def a regular. I have no explanation for it. So I just stopped subjecting myself to it.

      • Otaku fairy... says:

Basically we live in a world where people are deeply invested in protecting misogynistic abuse and not disrupting that status quo. Victim-blaming and hate speech are always ok, or at least more acceptable than subhumans getting haughty. It’s a punch-down world.

    • pinetree13 says:

The firm entrenchment of misogyny in our society really gets me down sometimes it’s really hard to deal with mentally.

  27. Really says:

I read the files, the description of the abuse and it is brutal and I’m glad she escaped on time.
I can’t imagine her state of mind when she left that nightmare ( because it was really toxic and violent) only to deal with public gaslighting and daily attacks by his supports.
She is really courageous and has a strong spirit, also the way she used all of this to advocates for other people wow.
    I wish her the best.

  28. Audrey says:

I am not surprised! Remember the stories about his trashed hotel rooms in the 90s? He has always had major drug and anger issues. I wonder how Vanessa handled all of that. And, Depp’s handlers should be arrested for SOMETHING! They saw and heard these things and they did NOTHING!

  29. rose says:

I wish her the best , I don’t really know what to think because there’s other reports that there are lots of videos of her abusing him also. Though I’m sure that is a lie .

    • Shockadelica says:

There’s no videos of her abusing him. More spin and misinformation from his side. That would’ve been out years ago. His side claims to have videos of Amber at their building. It’s probably showing her without bruises because she had makeup on. They don’t seem to grasp that concept of victims covering their bruises with makeup.

  30. Ali says:

    I believe her.

  31. Marlene says:

What I really want to know is how much money Harvey Levin/TMZ were paid for their fake news campaign against AH back in 2016 when she filed for divorce. And on a related note, there doesn’t seem to be that many pro-Depp commenters today; maybe his PR people have a tighter budget these days.

  32. A Finn says:

I had a boyfriend like this. For others like my mum he was The Gentleman. For me he was The Monster hitting me, abusing me and raping me. And after last night horrors he never remembered what he did.

“Oh, I don’t remember” – I heard that many, many times. Then I left him and I hope he burns in hell.

  33. isabelle says:

They are both toxic relationship people with repeating patterns. Combined they probably brought the worst out of one another. Which probably deepened Depps abuse pattern and substance abuse. Believe her. She has a pattern for dating ass*oles. She needs counseling and hope she is getting help so she doesn’t pick the same type of jerk again.

    • H says:

Wow, way to blame the victim – Amber. Yes, some women have a bad picker in regards to men but I’ve never blamed Amber. Johnny Depp showed her his charming side in the early part of their relationship. It wasn’t until after she married him that she saw the true Johnny.

      • Audrey says:

I don’t think she’s blaming the victim, but Amber has her issues too. It would be wise for her to get therapy and find out why she chooses the men she does. I mean, she must love drugged out narcissists. Look at Elon Musk!

      • Tiffany :) says:

Saying Amber has “issues” is a form of victim blaming. She wasn’t with Elon Must for that long at all, and for all we know they were casually dating. Putting responsibility for men’s behavior on the women they abuse is the definition of victim blaming.

Amber is friends with many of her exes and as the events with Johnny have detailed, she has a network of friends and family members that care for her. Let’s stop with the BS that she is some how to blame for this.

    • stephanie says:

haha wow! this is a troll dont feed it.

  34. Marty says:

Ok legal question here, if anyone knows- she talked about her abuse when they were first getting divorced, and then when it was finalized they released a joint statement saying “there were no false allegations”, or something along those lines. Can’t the case be thrown out because of that? I mean Amber has always been consistent in her claims, which I whole-heartedly believe, so why this lawsuit now? Plus, didn’t one of his ex people release text messages confirming and abuse incident between Amber and Depp?

    • Really says:

He is a mess out of control, he is a narcissist and addicted and the people around him support this behavior because in the end of the day he still gets paid and pay his handlers.
Amber heard tried to put him on rehab and push him to look for help but obviously he didn’t go.
When his ex employees stopped being paid they started suing him and telling how amber’s allegations were truth.

  35. Pulplove says:

I truly feel for her! Not only did she had to endure his physical and emotional abuse. She was also constantly struggling with herself, being caught between loving, hurting, fearing, hoping, believing and wanting to leave for several years.

After finally breaking free, most people didn’t believe her and automatically accused her of having used him to further her career and dumped everything verbally demeaning and cruel there is on her. Once again, she was disrespected and hurt this time by a large part of the public. What a nightmare this must have been and to some part still is for her. I wish her and every single victim all the strength, love, understanding, power and success in the world!

  36. Usedtobe says:

    I believe her as well.
I’ll be honest, when the story first broke I didn’t really. I thought they both probably had problems with drugs and alcohol and that it probably brought out the worst in both of them.

I had a friend and her and her then-BF would get right f**ked up, fight, get violent and have equally violent make-up sex. She would act like this was totally normal. I’d like to say that she got out because she realized how messed up that was but that wasn’t the case at all. She only got out because he left her. She hasn’t really had a relationship in the few years since then but she still does not see anything wrong with their behavior.
Have to admit that I thought of her when this thing with Amber and Johnny broke into the news.

However, the tides have changed and I can see that Amber is truly a survivor and I believe every word she says.

  37. HeyThere! says:

This is very triggering for me, I read this but won’t click and read more. I believe her. I was in a 1 Year relationship where I thought I met my husband but once I moved across country to be with him, things slowly became insane. He was drinking hard alcohol and mixing it with prescription drugs he would order from over seas!!!! I’m not making this up. I slowly started putting two and two together as things got increasingly bizarre and I found his stash and I got the hell out. He would turn into the different person a few times a month that quickly became several days a week and it was terrifying. Never to this level of physical abuse but mental abuse/gaslighting and threats of violence were all happening. I had to lock myself behind doors to escape then wait until he passed out to stick my head out and see what was happening. He was a monster. I know this would have been my fate if I stayed in that relationship. I went so far after I broke it off and moved back across country to tell everyone that if I was missing or something happened to me, that it was him. I was scared for two full years after I broke things off because I knew how he was under the influence of hard alcohol and illegal prescription drugs. I believe her, and I almost was her. You never think it’s going to be you until you blink and you are living it!

  38. Karen2 says:

Its embarrassing being a witness to 2 so-called adults going all out to torpedo each others careers. Only the lawyers will win.

    • pinetree13 says:

Yeah women should just keep quiet about abuse and suffer in silence like in the good ol’ days!

  39. ivy says:

As much as I think Depp is a sleazeball, I believe HIM. Not only does he literally have video evidence he has testimony from tens of witnesses including police officers that she was verbally and physically abusive toward him.

Another perspective is that this simply could have been an extremely toxic relationship. They could both be at fault and have both been abusive. But above all, I don’t think it’s right to automatically take Amber’s side just because she’s the one who came out about it first.

    • Anna says:

I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but it is not inconsistent with abuse for a victim to physically fight back. Just because Amber may have defended herself does NOT mean Depo wasn’t an abuser. Your instinctual fight/flight reactions kick in, and especially if he cornered her, she very well may have fought back. He was still the abuser.

I believe her. Her story has always been consistent, and Depp’s statements that she hit him are a way to try and minimize his abuse of her.

    • Nene says:

I agree. People are quick to ignore that they BOTH have historical (violent) issues, which is relevant in assessing Depp and Heard’s characters.
Personally, I’d rather be convinced by the actual evidence.

    • BorderMollie says:

I mean, is it wrong to not know who to believe here? There’s evidence on both sides, plus lots of back and forth. I just hate to disbelieve victim claims in any circumstance. One for the lawyers to sort out, I guess.

    • Otaku fairy... says:

How much does he pay u?

    • Tiffany :) says:

SHE is the one with video evidence and testimony from witnesses. He is toxic person, as his recent interviews make clear.

      • BorderMollie says:

Both have submitted such evidence though. Why is her evidence believable but not his? Based on the comments here, I feel like I’m missing something.

      • Lucia says:

@BorderMollie It was a toxic situation all around. But I believe Johnny was the primary aggressor.

      • Tiffany :) says:

It is important to take into account the character of the person telling the story. Read Johnny Depp’s profile in Rolling Stone and tell me he is a reliable witness to anything. He has many decades of violent substance abuse in his history.

His “evidence” isn’t written in blood on the walls, he didn’t have bald spots on his head, clumps of his hair weren’t thrown on the floor. We have video evidence of him on a drunken tirade yelling at her and throwing things. We don’t have evidence of her being violent, other than her own admission that she stepped in to prevent her sister from being thrown downstairs.

    • Hyacinth Bucket says:

There is no “evidence.” He claims to have video but no video has ever been released. All the witnesses are his employees who have only years later remembered that – oh yeah! – they witnessed their boss get beat. How strange that none of them ever said a word during his divorce or when he was first battling abuse allegations.

      • Shockadelica says:

Right. There’s no video of Amber abusing him. That would’ve been out years ago! They claim to have security videos of Amber that shows she doesn’t have bruises. Makeup, anybody? 🙄

    • bib says:

Now I have to think about that time my ex “walked” the block with me for an hour, firmly holding my arm (hich was completely blue and grey the next day). When people came and told him to stop, he told them he was not the violent one as I was kicking his legs with my heels to try to break free from his grip. “Look what she does! She’s aggressive towards me.” I’m so thankful these people didn’t fall for this bullshit and answered him that this was a completely normal reaction for someone held by force and called the police.
What I wanted to say is that in these “mutual violent” relationships, the agression is often not mutual but one of them feels obliged to defend themselves. Only to be called violent by bystanders afterwards, which is a double humiliation.
I think this is the reason Amber can’t let go and wants to prove what happens to her at all costs, because of this humiliating feeling of being abused twice.

  40. a reader says:

    He is an evil MONSTER.

And the thing that stuck out to me was the part about the ecstasy bender. ECSTASY is called the love drug for a reason. If Johnny got violent while taking it he has bigger issues than any of us can imagine. That stuff makes you lovey dovey, not violent.

  41. Danielle says:

I believe her. I was scrolling through YouTube the other day and for some reason it recommended a video for me from a Youtuber that I’m not subscribed to. I couldn’t read the whole title so I clicked on it to see what it was about. I thought maybe they were addressing the claims but nope. This chick really was pushing the “Amber Heard is the abuser, not the victim” narrative. I exited faster than I ever have in my life. Even if you like Depp’s movies, how can you so blindly accept his lies when there is so much evidence to the contrary? You are literally and willingly putting your head in the sand. Its sad, but unfortunately not surprising. And they wonder why more women don’t come forward about abuse.

  42. Lucia says:

I believe every word Amber says. We all know Johnny has a problem with drugs and alcohol. So why is it so hard to believe it spiraled to a point where his behavior has become incredibly violent? When you’re with someone who communicates violently, you sometimes have no choice but to adopt the same communication methods.

It’s pretty clear this whole lawsuit is Johnny’s way of trying to continue his abuse. I’m happy she’s standing up for herself. Hopefully a judge can see right through this and dismiss this nonsense once and for all.

  43. Yawn says:

I for one would like to see Depp sit for a deposition much like Amber did… there is video of it released now along with transcripts of her getting grilled by depps counsel… would love to see how he answers to any of the things she has accused him of… poor girl, she’s damn lucky she got herself away from that unhinged drugged up lunatic.

  44. Lena says:

Just the phone video she took showed what an violent abuser he was. Why do people just discount what they see in front of him?

  45. SpilldatT says:

People were after my a** when I said I didn’t believe Johnny Deep on twitter.

Ppl REALLY hate her & will foam at the mouth over how good and amazing Deep is, and that she is a gold digging nag who abused him by breaking his hand or some silly nonsense.

  46. Dark and Stormy says:

I think he will prove that she was just as volatile as he was in both their relationship and her previous relationships and that she overstated her fears based on the reactions of those around them.

    • Tiffany :) says:

The problem with that guess is that she is still close friends with the people you accuse her of having past volatile relationships with. None of her exes have accused her of beating them.

Even after seeing slut shaming messages written in blood on her walls, you propose she was overstating her fear? That’s absurd.

      • Rebecca says:

Now Depp’s lawyers are saying they have more than one of her exes who have made statements that she abused them. Not that I believe anything he or his lawyers say. This is their new defense. What happened to the 80 plus hours of video evidence he supposedly had? If it’s so cut and dry, why haven’t they shown it to anyone else yet? I’m not buying that a court order would stop Depp from leaking anything incriminating he had against Heard.

      • Yawn says:

Id love to see who these supposed women she abused are that are just now, almost three years after she filed for the restating order and divorce, coming out of the woodwork to defend Depp. I saw on twitter that his longtime bodyguard that supposedly witnessed the final fight between Depp and amber has died, so that’s one less witness on his list.

It just seems like he’s lining up people to try and shame and embarrass her further by airing out all the dirty laundry and trying to paint her and her witnesses as liars… so far he’s only succeeded in getting outted as a crazy drunk drugged up abusing piece of garbage.

  47. Blocked Cause I am says:

The only thing that struck me as weird was the alcohol and broken glass part. Three days after smashing the bottles, they were never cleaned up? These Richie rich people don’t have staff to clean up? I think she is an awful person. I think Depp hit her and abused her while under the influence. I think they are both idiots and I still believe her. She can’t act though. she was awful in Aqua man, the worst part of the movie.

    • Shockadelica says:

She’s an awful person for what? Being abused? You believe her while smearing her as a person and actress?

  48. SJR says:

Just my opinion but, if JD wasn’t a millionaire with a team of ass kissing tools on his payroll, would he have been able to get away with his asshole behavior for decades?
Possibly. But, his $$, fame, previous good looks all enabled him to buy off witnesses.

IRL, lots of violent addicts also get away with asshole behavior for decades.

I was in a bad marriage. Not a violent marriage. Been divorced over 20 years, and certain people who know my Ex-Husband and his behavior during our marriage will still say idiotic things to me such as “well, at least he didn’t hit you or the kids”. Shut up. And move forward.

AH has guts to stick up for herself. How Vanessa put up with JD and raised kids with him, I will never understand.

Deep needs rehab, lockdown rehab IMO. And, is there not one person in his private life who will make him aware of how out of control his behavior is? IRL, it’s jail time that wakes them up.

  49. Me says:

I read all her court filing, it was a long hard read. Her decdeclarations and evidence are horrific!
I will forever have nightmares with Amber’s bloody bald spot on her calp and her missing hair on the floor.
    She’s so strong

  50. Suz says:

Hey kids, Johnny destroyed a hotel room in the 90s after he had a fight with then girlfriend Kate Moss. This isn’t new. I believe Amber.

  51. Pete Booty Jig says:

Oh come on. JD made a video mocking Trump. This is clearly a conservative smear job. (sarcasm)

  52. Uppenyrcraut says:

Besides everything else he is a pretentious writer. Imagine being beaten up by him and then having to read the vomitous garbage of an apology via text. Gross.

  53. My friend dated her. Grain of salt!

    • Shockadelica says:

Those documents aren’t a grain a salt. You might not like her but it doesn’t mean she’s lying.

  54. Shockadelica says:

I believed her then and I still believe her now. It’s even worse than we thought! horrific abuse. And he settled so this stuff wouldn’t get out. Now it’s ALL COMING OUT! His narcissism and anger is what’s going to bring him down. I feel so sad for Amber and his children. He needs to be locked away in rehab for years and not at home where he has his people enabling him and buying him drugs. Pathetic little man!
