Priyanka Chopra calls Nick Jonas ‘Old Man Jonas,’ ‘he’s such an old soul’

Priyanka Chopra returns home after the Women In The World Summit

Here are some photos of Priyanka Chopra attending the Women in the World summit. I thought her grey suit was Dior, but it’s not – it’s Ralph and Russo. At first I was like “this is fabulous,” but on second look… I’m not crazy about the off-the-shoulder jacket, honestly. Anyway, Priyanka had a conversation with Tina Brown at the summit (it’s Tina Brown’s summit) and she talked about being a global icon, her charity work and of course her marriage to Nick Jonas. There’s one story getting a lot of attention, about how she didn’t even think she would end up marrying Nick but he surprised her:

Priyanka Chopra may be happily married to Nick Jonas, but she definitely didn’t expect to be when they first met.

“I’ve known him for two years. I didn’t think that this is what it [would’ve] turned out to be, and that’s maybe that’s my fault, I judged a book by its cover,” she told Brown. “When I actually started dating Nick, he surprised me so much. I call him ‘Old Man Jonas.’ That’s my name for him, ‘OMJ.’ He’s such an old soul, extremely smart, so good for me because he grounds me so much. I’m a wild child, I do whatever I want whenever I want and he always supports me.”

Chopra then went on to describe “one of the first things that struck” her about Jonas during an early date together. Towards the end of their night out with friends, Chopra said she needed to leave due to a meeting, but continued to drop hints to Jonas in hopes that he would tell her to cancel her other commitment.

“Finally he took me aside and he’s like, ‘Look, I’m not stupid. I know what you’re trying to do, but I will never be the one who will tell you to cancel work because I know how hard you’ve worked to be where you are. So if you could’ve canceled it, you would’ve done it. I’ll take our friends out for dinner, we’ll wait for you, and you finish your meeting and come back,’” she recalled. Added Chopra of her husband: “He gave me credit for what I had done, it was just mindblowing for me.”

I like the story about Nick acknowledging that his lady works and operates and that he’s more than cool with it. But the whole Old Man Jonas thing is just… weird. She’s a decade older than him (36 to his 26) and while I think Nick is probably mature for 26, let’s not go f–king overboard. I also think women in their 30s (and beyond) need to stop referring to themselves as a “wild child.” There is a time limit on that. It reminds me of Aaron Taylor Johnson and Sam Taylor Johnson, although Aaron and Sam have a more extreme age difference. But Sam has always talked about how her young husband is the “old soul” who grounds her and brought family values to her. It’s just a weird dynamic with these younger husbands, my lord.

I must have Game of Thrones on the brain. I keep picturing them as Margery Tyrell and Tommen Baratheon.

She’s probably not exaggerating. Her passive aggressive response/tactics to prolong the date paled in comparison to his mature response. This is good as she may be used to a less healthy communication dynamic. Also the Jonas family is known for being very tight-knit. And supportive/grounded. Again, if she is not used to this I can see her responding so if you civilly to it. Jonas may actually be the more mature person in this relationship.

I totally agree with this. I would find it strange if I didn’t know a couple with a similar dynamic- the wife is a little over a decade older than the husband and she has a very fey/wild quality about her that has always made her seem young while her husband is often the more grounded, centered and reliable one. They’re older now, so it doesn’t seem as strange to observe, but they’ve been together for decades and when they first got together, he was in his 20s while she was in her 30s. Their dynamic was much the same then, I’m told.

I know a woman who is almost 40, and while she is clearly an adult and takes care of business, she will always feel girlish because that’s just her vibe- she’s impulsive and doesn’t seem to plan past the end of her nose.

Meanwhile, my 8 year old is a crotchety little old man baby, reasonably explaining his disgruntled moods on a Tuesday.

A lot of times, our approach to being in the world is about who we are, not just our age.

I think its a weird dynamic with their relationship.

My little son has an old soul for sure and I call him “old man” sometimes. It must sound funny to other parents when we are on the playground or something “come on old man, let’s go have lunch” lol.
I’m not really into this couple, like I have no feelings on them really, but I think this is kind of cute.

I feel like she’s compensating for the fact that he looks like a teeny-bopper

I think she’s convinced that people care about her life more then they do. Maybe he is an Old Soul but it sounds like she’s trying to explain to everyone why she married him. She shouldn’t. She married him, she’s happy or whatever, it’s her business.

    • Some chick says:

Um, she was doing an interview. Clearly, some people care. But I’m mostly here to talk about the suit.

  7. Who ARE These People? says:

If he really said all that, it’s great and it shouldn’t stand out as much as it does. I do hope younger men are more appreciative of the role of work in women’s lives, and less threatened by it, than the men I shared space with in my generation.

    +1 to all Kaiser said.

  9. SM says:

I find her exhausting. I never saw her in anything but I know she exists and that she is married to a Jonas brother because like a girl with first boyfriend she tries to expose each and every little thing about her relationship and seeks approval from strangers who will reassure her that her boyfriend loves her to feel loved. In comparison whoever he is in his private life, he does seem like a more mature one.

Men marry women a decade younger than them all the time. Dane Cook is dating a teenager for ffs. I personally don’t want to play into the patriarchal idea that a women being with a younger man is “weird”. Because it isn’t. She didnt marry a teenager like Sam Taylor Johnson. She married a fully grown man. 26 is young, but he’s not a child. I personally don’t think I could be with someone with such a significant age difference but that’s me. If they have enough in common and it works, more power to them.

    • Eva says:

      Amen!

    • BANANIE says:

But by the same token, people don’t usually hesitate to call out the Dane Cooks of the world as being gross for dating women so much younger than they are. I haven’t really heard Priyanka Chopra being called gross or a cradle robber, but I might have missed it.

I don’t think it’s ‘weird’ as in uncanny or something, but it’s definitely odd because you don’t see it all that often. So whether or not this significant-age-gap-marriage thing should be judged or not, it is seen as weird for the simple fact that it’s uncommon.

    • Grant says:

Wasn’t Brad Pitt ten years older than Angelina?? You’re right, men marry women a decade younger all the time and we don’t bat an eye at those couplings.

Age isn’t the most important factor in a relationship. Sure, it matters. But personality and attitude matter more.

But, I’m here to talk about the suit. I think it’s cute! And chic. But a bit too snug. I could make a joke about all of those wonderful samosas (and other delicious things) that go along with all of those Indian weddings, but I blame the tailors.

To be clear, I am not casting shade on Indian weddings! Nor on Indian food… ever. It is the best. Personal share: I was gifted a beautiful Indian outfit, which I took to a local Indian shop to be fitted. To my surprise, they left quite large seam allowances. Turns out, they knew what they were doing, LOL.

Anyway, I’m rambling. I think Priyanka and Nick are both nice folks and I wish them all the best.

    • KidV says:

I like the suit too. It could be a little roomier, but it shows off her great figure. If I were to wear the suit I would want the off-shoulder side to be an inch or two higher. It seems like it would hinder arm movement where she has it, that would make me feel claustrophobic.

I had no idea who she was until I started reading here at CB. I still have no idea what she does.

  12. Bella Bella says:

Hahahahahahahahahaha! She wants me to believe this “old man” stuff?! Hahahahahahaha!

    • SV says:

She didn’t come up with the old soul stuff. His family has talked about his old man personality since he was a teenager. I wouldn’t be surprised if she picked up the Old Soul description from his parents.

  13. topsy says:

Sounds like she’s calling him an ‘old soul’ (as if!) because she wants people to stop thinking that he married his babysitter every time they see them together.

    Beautiful woman, unflattering outfit
