Kit Harington on Jon’s claim to the Iron Throne: ‘He doesn’t f–king want it’

SPOILERS for Game of Thrones

The thing about Game of Thrones is that, quite obviously, the audience knows more than the characters. And for Game of Thrones obsessives, we’ve obviously been reading and trading theories about all of these characters for a long-ass time too. When the show broke the news that Jon Snow is really the only child of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, it was already a widely believed conspiracy by GoT fans, so it really wasn’t shocking. Plus, the show broke the news to Bran Stark like a season and half before Jon Snow would eventually find out. And in last night’s season premiere, Jon finally learned that he’s really Aegon Targaryen, the true king of the Seven Kingdoms. How does Kit Harington feel about that?

It’s admittedly a lot to take in. Kit Harington tells EW that this revelation is “the most upsetting thing in the world” to his character. “If Jon could go back in time and say: ‘Whatever you’re about to say, don’t tell me,’ he would,” Harington says. “He’d happily be in ignorance.” In most respects, Jon’s reaction is pretty much what you’d expect — except, perhaps, a bit angrier.

“He’s not hard to predict, Jon, he doesn’t do many unexpected things,” Harington says. “You mark the particularly tricky scenes that you’re going have to concentrate on and this was one. He finds out such a massive piece of information. Not only does he find out who his mother is but also that he’s related to the person he’s in love with. It’s hard for any actor to play. It’s not a two-hour movie but eight seasons of playing a character who’s finding out.”

Harington notes Jon is pretty enraged by this news and struggling to contain himself. “The key to it is the audience already knows,” he says. “So it’s not a shock to them. With Jon, it’s about what he says, ‘You’re telling me my father lied to me? My father, the most honorable man I’ve known my entire life, you’re saying that?’ For that moment, Samwell is nothing to him. Jon would disown this friend and beat him up if he was trying to lie to him about this. He’s quite threatening: You’re telling me this, you better be f—king right, and if you’re trying to play me — that was the way to play that scene I think. I hope it was.”

As for his Iron Throne claim, that’s something Jon is firmly not interested in. “That’s the thing I love about Jon, his purity,” Harington says. “He doesn’t f—king want it. He doesn’t want that f—king information. He doesn’t want to know. He has no ambition for the throne. He’s never wanted that. The end of the world might be coming soon but at least he’s in love with somebody and knows who he is, and then comes this sledgehammer.”

Does anyone else wonder if Jon is going to keep this piece of news mostly to himself? I think he might tell Dany and then leave it at that. LOL, he’s got to break it to Dany that she’s his aunt. Lord of Light, have mercy on us all. But yeah, I doubt Jon is even thinking about his claim to the Iron Throne. He just wants to survive the war with the undead and the long night/winter.

Also: Anderson Cooper did interviews with all of the Game of Thrones peeps for Sunday’s episode of 60 Minutes, and the videos are amazing. Here’s Maisie Williams and Isaac Hempstead Wright talking about being child actors on the show:

Yeah, Jon is not going to all of a sudden be, “I’m the king? The throne is mine? Awesome!” He doesn’t care. Like at ALL lol. In fact, he’d probably be terrible with all the tedious kingly duties.

    • Agirlandherdog says:

Actually, I think he’d be a good king. But he doesn’t want to do it. The only way he’d do it is if he thinks it’s the best thing for the people. Now Sam has him wondering if Dany is really the best option, and I think her actions throughout the next few episodes are going to make him question her more.

And he definitely isn’t telling her. Someone else will spill that tea.

  2. Bex says:

I think Jon would keep it a secret but you just know Bran would blurt it out halfway through a council meeting lol

    • Lilly (with the double-L) says:

That’s what I think too. During their attempts to try and convict Jamie, I think Bran will say something like “well, the decision is Jon’s, because he’s king.”

  3. Lucy says:

At this point I feel like the Throne itself isn’t worth sh*t. These people could die at any moment now, and they know it.

  4. Loretta says:

I can’t help but ship Jon and Dany. I especially like Dany: a strong, brave and modern woman.

  5. Reggie says:

Follow me back to 2001 when I was re reading the first book

And I’m re reading the “Promise, Ned” scene and thinking about the imagery of a bloody and blue Rose’s and all of sudden I’m like

    “OMG…….R+L=J!!!!”

Naturally, the world needed to know of my brilliant insight and deduction, so I searched for any Game of Thrones fan sites and ended up finding “The Board” i.e. ASOIAF.org

So, I registered and created an account and was just about to post my brilliant theory…..

…only to realize that topic was a stickied thread on the main page with over 500 comments 😏

It was a bit like the whole Snape and Lilly Potter thing her in the HP series – was obvious to anyone who read the books. As was his death, again obvs that he would die to protect Harry.

    • SKF says:

      Yup! Same here!

    • Lilly (with the double-L) says:

LOL. Me too. I’m such a newbie who binge-watched it all before the season started. HBO pulled me in with a season 1 marathon and me with a very slow Saturday. I felt that Sansa, Arya and Bran came back from Weirwood tree, they had their plan to set to get Lord Baelish. After the fact that was my theory, I did get fooled into thinking Sansa and Arya might be torn apart. But, yeah, not a particularly novel theory after some research.

Jon won’t tell Dany, someone else will. He keeps running away from thrones and the responsibility that comes with it but can he keep running?

Jon doesn’t want it but he does have a stubborn sense of duty and honour. That’s the Stark in him. He can’t simply ignore the fact that he’s the ‘rightful’ king. Dany on the other hand does really, really want it. What’s more she feels completely entitled to it. I think Dany’s hunger for power is about to be unleashed. After the first episode, I now suspect she will become villainous, something the show has hinted at before. Sam asking whether she’d bend the knee? (Nope). Varys looking at the young lovers and saying things don’t last. That’s major foreshadowing. I thought Jon was more likely to die and that he came back to simply defeat the dead but an endgame of Dany dying after a power grab and Jon ruling, martyr-like and miserable, even though he doesn’t want to? That’d be bittersweet for sure.

Jon never wanted any of it, but he will get it in the end. The reluctant leader may be the best one… If there is a Throne to sit on at the end.
I never thought Dany would take the throne. Too many foreshadowing moments against it. Her vision at the House of the Undying. She walks up to the throne, but she never actually gets to touch it and walks away from it. Also, Daario tells her he doesn’t see her sitting on a Throne because she’s no ruler. She is a conqueror.
Plus the title of the series is a Song of Ice and Fire. This is NOT Dany and Jon. This is ONLY Jon. He is the SON of Ice and Fire. Half Stark and half Targ. He is the sword in the darkness and the shield that will guard the relams of men. There is a theory Rhaegar was Azor Ahai who tried 3 times to bring forth Lightbringer, which is the weapon needed to defeat NK. Jon was the 3rd try. Lyanna was the sacrifice. He was born under a bleeding star (Arthur Dayne’s bloody sword Ned set by the bed Lyanna was in is said to be made from a comet /meteor). Jon is the Prince that was Promised… As in Lyanna begging Ned to promise her he will protect him. “Promise me, Ned”.
GRRM got a lot of inspo from TLoTR. I think he sees Jon as the Aragon of this story. Humble and reluctant but crowned at the end, although it comes at the expense of much pain and sacrifice. GRRM also said recently the books and show always had endgame figured out and the books won’t deviate from the show ending too much.

Thank you for bringing up LOTR! Nobody does, even though it’s clear that LOTR is the blueprint for ASOIAF, just with all the mundane and the horrific that Tolkien only hinted at (but imho the reader knows it’s there… just think of the Orcs pillaging villages, would they play cards with the women AND the men?).
There’s the restless princess who becomes a knight, there’s the unlikely hero (Sam as…Samvise Gamgee), the one who knows he’s a sacrifice (Bran as Frodo), the reluctant king (Jon of course as Aragorn) who is shunned by the nobles he’s related to (the Elves for Aragorn, Catelyn Stark for Jon), and who is mixed ‘race’ (half Elvish/half Targaryen) and ends up marrying a woman who is a relative from the ‘magical’ side (Dany/Arwen); the Mad King; the traitors in high places; the menace coming back after centuries (in the Silmarillion, Tolkien writes about a kingdom in the North that was the seat of Evil way before Mordor)… and it goes on and on and on.

Sorry for the nerd-y moment, I gor carried away!

  9. Candikat says:

When/However she finds out, Dany’s not going to take this news well. She wants that throne way more than she wants Jon.

  10. DP says:

My guess is Jon doesn’t get to tell Dany before someone else does and that makes her mistrust him.
I think they are at odds for awhile, but eventually make amends. Don’t think they end up lovers again tho… just lots of sexual tension.
While I’m sharing theories… Somehow, Dany dies to save him and her people and he ends up in the throne unwillingly.
