Ellen Pompeo and her Hollywood home are featured in the May/June Veranda feature story and editorial. I assume that Ellen is probably putting this property up for sale, which is a common enough thing in the celebrity world: they use these home-design magazines to promote their real estate just before they put it on sale. Or maybe Ellen just wants us to look at her house because she’s proud of it. That could totally be it too.
You can see Veranda’s editorial here. She worked with interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard to renovate and decorate the 1930s Hollywood home. She’s apparently a huge fan of Moroccan tiles and Moroccan design. Some quotes from the piece:
On why she sets a table with black and white colors: “I love black and white. It’s like a metaphor for life – you get darkness but you get so much light.”
On dinner party guests: “…that’s really what I’m after when I entertain. I love original spirits, people who bring life to the table.”
On why she favors Moroccan style to entertain: “I’ve always gravitated to Moroccan style. It’s cozy, and exotic and sexy. The pierced lights, the intricate tilework and patterns that each tell a story. I love how it instantly sets a mood.”
I love many elements of Moroccan design too – the tile work, the colors – but I feel like Ellen and her designer maybe aren’t taking the right things away from Moroccan design? The outdoor/porch table design is cute, but her kitchen is awful! It’s like half-clinical and halfway ill-functioning. Not to mention ugly. No disrespect to peeps who like a black-and-white palette, but don’t call this mess Moroccan. Moroccan style would have so many natural colors, fabrics and textures. It would have more blue too.

Not impressed.
Ive been to Morocco, and yeah this comes pretty close, so yeah I like it. Its not as colorful as the real thing, though.
For someone who loves color, it’s missing.
Those pants are tragic
This is not showing a house…, I was ready for some house porn! It’s a half-kitchen and two decorated tables with nibbles 🙁
Moroccan style is more than just bright colors though. There are lots of textural elements that they got right. What she did was take the basic structure of Moroccan design and muted it a bit. I’ve never been into Moroccan decor in general but I dont think this is a bad take on it. I like more it than when people throw a bunch of brightly colored rugs around and call it “Moroccan”. Insert eye roll.
Its fine, not my taste, but fine. I like her pants.

Oh my god I loved the pants 😂😂😂 I am the negative attention getting type of thin and I thought how well those would cover my legs and make me appear regular size.

My husband is Moroccan and I’ve been there several times. Moroccan design has much more color and texture and details. This is too clinical for a kitchen. Being in Morocco is a really overwhelming at times because everything is colorful and has some sort of design.
It’s really bland. That kitchen looks like it’s still in construction stages, like they’re waiting for the back splash or some bold feature like a range hood over the stove top to arrive from Morocco…

Not really my style. Those pants though. Looks like you could fit another Ellen in them. Also they probably stand on their own once you get out of them.
The house looks sort of dark. And what’s with the awkward poses? It’s like a child took some snapshots and the last moment the adults turned and smiled. “Oh look at you snapping away with your new camera! Just don’t go too close to the water with it.”
So I clicked on the photoshoot link… I think what’s off is the proportions not the colors. The size of the white lanterns compared to the tile pattern by the pook, also the pattern on the table cloth with the napkin design and other accents. It’s also why the kitchen seems ill designed, brick tiled floor to a marble slab wall, all the same poorly conceived proportion problem… my take
