Blake Shelton got handmade gifts from Gwen Stefani & her sons for his b-day

Blake Shelton celebrated his birthday last week. He turned 43 years old, and he celebrated with his girlfriend Gwen Stefani, Gwen’s sons and some friends. They had a low-key pizza party, only they made their own pizzas in the outdoor oven. Sounds really… nice. I’m basically covering this interview because Blake sounds really content with Gwen and he clearly feels like her sons are his family now. It’s pretty sweet.

Not only did Gwen Stefani throw boyfriend Blake Shelton an epic pizza party to celebrate his birthday, but she also surprised him with a thoughtful gift. The No Doubt front woman gifted the “God’s Country” singer — who turned 43 on Tuesday — a “huge” sign to put on display at his Oklahoma ranch.

“It’s like a ‘Welcome to the Ranch’-type sign,” Shelton told PEOPLE at the Universal Studios Backlot BBQ for IHG Rewards Club Chase Mastercard cardholders on Friday. “It was a handmade deal. It’s pretty cool.”

Stefani, 49, held the pizza party at her house on Thursday night and invited over friends and family. While she was the one to share multiple photos and videos documenting the night on social media, it turns out that Shelton was actually the one behind the idea for the birthday festivities. “[Gwen] said, ‘What do you want?’ I go, ‘Well, there’s a big pizza oven out there, so we need to figure out how to use that thing,’” he said. “So they have a friend who actually owns a pizza restaurant here in town, he came over and knew how to do it. I have no idea how to do any of that stuff. It’s either a frozen pizza for me or Pizza Hut.”

Gwen’s sons Kingston, 13, Zuma, 10, and Apollo, 5 — whom she shares with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale — also joined in on the birthday fun, and they even wrote out sweet cards for Shelton.

“Christmas, birthdays, any kind of holiday — they always sit down and take time to write a message and draw pictures or something,” he said. “Those are the coolest, coolest things, you know? It’s something I never experienced in my life. When they take time and actually make something, it’s pretty cool.”

While Shelton admits that it “sucks” that Adam Levine will no longer sit beside him on the show since announcing his departure in May, he thinks that NBC made the right call by asking Stefani to fill his spot. “We’re all going to miss out Adam,” he said. “There’s no way around it. But she’s way better looking than he is, in my opinion.”

When it comes to working with Stefani, Shelton said he can “never get enough of her.” “Even when I have a day off and she’s working, I’ll go with her to whatever she’s doing,” he explained.

I used to think Blake and Gwen were so phoney and that it would fall apart in less than a year. But nowadays, they’re bizarrely one of my favorite couples. I mean, Blake is really selling this image of “humble, down-on-his-luck average guy finds love again with a rock star single mom,” right? Because I completely buy this sh-t. And I like the smaller ways they’ve changed for each other, from Gwen organizing a really simple pizza party for his birthday to the way they’ve just meshed their lives together to the point where he’s following her around on his day off. He sounds like he really loves her sons too. Gavin must be sh-tting bricks about it.

Why would Gavin have a problem with Blake adoring his kids? I’m sure it’s a relief to him that they get along so well. That said, I’m not sold on Blake & Gwen. She’s a stage-five clinger who wants desperately to be married again, despite claims to the contrary, and he doesn’t seem to want to commit. Not a great combination.

I’m picturing kid’s hand-drawn birthday cards covering Blake’s refrigerator and it’s making me smile. Sweet. Gwen is clearly a good mom.

Gotta say, I won’t miss Levine on The Voice. His frenemy schtick with Blake jumped the shark long ago, and he’s just not a good coach.

I used to loooove Gwen cos she was just so cool, anti establishment, independent and a total role model for 90’s girls everywhere.

So when did she become so… bland? What happened to her rebel spirit, her badass rock star political schtick?

I mean I do get it. I’m pushing 45 and nowhere near as cool as I once was but there’s still a glimmer of fire left in me. With Gwen it just seems to have been quenched.

ETA: those shoes are completely hideous.

    • FHMom says:

Three kids will change your priorities. They are still pretty young, so you may recognize her badass more as the kids become more independent.

      • Giddy says:

I agree with you completely. When children enter the picture a parent learns that they need to model good behavior. Children take most behavioral cues from their parents, and it is wise to not look like a total hypocrite. Gwen’s boys seem to have been raised to be thoughtful young men. Kudos!

    • Bunny says:

Three children, a public divorce, and twenty five years will do that to a person.

My guess is that she’s more comfortable with herself. We’re the same age, and I’m still me, but a calmer version of myself.

    • a reader says:

She was never the “cool, anti establishment, independent and a total role model” type. That was an image created to sell records.

She is and has always been a Catholic Republican from Orange county California. She played at being cool and anti establishment but she has ALWAYS been a poser.

      • Green Desert says:

@ a reader – Exactly! If you pay attention to her interviews, your description of her is spot-on. I don’t know if she’s a Republican, but she does actually sound pretty conservative in many ways.

Also: I loved No Doubt back in the day but Just a Girl isn’t the feminist anthem it wants to be. Gwen famously said in an interview after No Doubt’s heyday that people called her a feminist but she didn’t identify as one because she didn’t really know what the word meant and no one would explain it to her. That’s always stuck with me (anyone else remember this???). People can of course grow and become more educated and socially/politically aware, but I’m not sure that’s the case here.

That said, Gwen and Blake do seem like a great couple and he seems to love her kids. She deserves happiness after that d-bag Rossdale.

This made me think of the Christmas episode of The Office when Pam’s gift to Jim was a book about him that she illustrated.

Phyllis: Are you good at handmade?

  5. Renee says:

I love them as a couple. I’m rooting for them.
