Kellyanne Conway asks journo ‘what’s your ethnicity?’ when asked about Trump’s racism

Kellyanne Conway Meets Reporters in DC

This past weekend, Donald Trump tweeted a vile, racist attack on four American congresswomen. He told the four women of color – three of whom were born in America – to go back to their countries. People pretended to be shocked, because it’s apparently breaking news that Donald Trump is an unhinged racist, a nativist, a white supremacist, a bully and a misogynist. Oh wait, we’ve known all of that for years. As I said in my initial coverage, the tweets were written in a certain way which led me to believe that someone was tweeting for Trump, because the phrasing of the tweets was not what he would use. Meaning, there were people on his staff who cosigned Trump’s racist attacks on four congresswomen and those staffers helped him attack those women.

In the days that followed, Trump has been happy to make this is the dominant conversation, and you know why? He loves to stir up his racist, white supremacist base. Not only has he tweeted more unhinged, racist sh-t, he’s directed his staff to, like, create talking points about his racist attack and go out and give public statements justifying his words. Which is how we got Kellyanne Conway standing outside the White House, giving a half-assed press conference. At some point, Kellyanne turned to journalist Andrew Feinberg and this happened:

Feinberg, a reporter for the website BeltwayBreakfast.com, asked the White House counselor which countries President Donald Trump was referring to when he suggested Ayanna Pressley, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar—all U.S. citizens—should “go back” to where they came from. Instead of answering that question, Conway asked him, “What’s your ethnicity?”

“Uh… why is that relevant?” Feinberg asked before Conway interrupted him to say, “Because I’m asking you a question.”

After Conway shares that her ancestors are from Ireland and Italy, the reporter said, “My ethnicity is not relevant to the question I’m asking you.”

Conway still would not answer Feinberg’s question, instead insisting that he question was relevant because Trump said “originally” from—he didn’t—and going on a rant about how “a lot of us are sick and tired in this country of America coming last,” echoing comments she made on Fox News earlier in the day about the “Squad” representing a “dark underbelly in this country.”

Reached for comment, Feinberg told The Daily Beast, “It’s not the first time she’s responded to one of my questions with an irrelevant question, but this time was particularly bizarre.”

[From The Daily Beast]

The argument Conway and Trump are making is clear to those neo-Nazis listening – Conway and Trump are saying that the reason America is doing poorly is because of all the brown and black people. They’ve always said that if you speak dog-whistle racist or explicit racist. As for “what’s your ethnicity?” – again, they’re setting it up so that anyone who criticizes them or questions them will be shown to have “bias” because those critics/journalists are Jewish/Hispanic/black/Asian, etc. Pretty soon the White House’s official policy will be “only white male Christian journalists allowed at makeshift press conferences.” Pretty soon, the pressers will just be Lindsay Graham yodeling while Kellyanne wears a swastika t-shirt.

It’s even more shocking when you see the video:

This shriveled soulless…you know where I’m going. More evidence. This is the end of the world.

    • Esmom says:

I tend to agree. One the heels of yesterday’s thread about millennials not wanting to have kids, I am once again terrified for the futures of the kids I brought into this hellish world.

    • ByTheSea says:

And let’s be clear, she was asking him what his ethnicity is because she already knew he was Jewish. That was supposed to segue into her next talking point about how the “squad” hates Jewish people (or something like that). That’s the Fox news talking point: that these women have no basis to criticize Trump because they criticize Israel and make Israel feel “unsafe” or something, something (I don’t speak fluent dog whistle and racism).

      • Kitten says:

Ah ok I didn’t realize where she was going with that but that makes perfect sense. She wanted him to say “Jewish” so she could ask something like “do you approve of Congresswoman Omar’s comments about Jewish people?” or some such nonsense. Good on Feinberg for not setting that up for her.

        Thanks for explaining that, ByTheSea.

      • Purplehazeforever says:

That’s where she was going with the questioning and to double down that the tweets were not racists. That Trump was lumping them altogether & calling them socialists. That they hate our country. It’s important to call him out for the tweets & to argue he’s wrong on all fronts.

      • Jen says:

Ahh..thank you. I was wondering where she was going with that. Since Princess Nagini and white bread are Jewish I ASSumed she wouldn’t denigrate Jewish people so I was momentarily confused.

    • AnnaKist says:

We’ve had a few awful females in public office down here, but this Conway woman is positively vile. She’s a despicable thing.

      • velourazure says:

She’s horrible, a patsy for her tangerine overlord. You know she really wanted to ask the reporter for his papers.

      • Giddy says:

Ask about his ethnicity? Why not? She’ll say whatever the highest bidder wants, and in this case the buyer was Trump. Remember when she worked for Ted Cruz in his Presidential bid? She was very insulting and dismissive of Trump then. But Trump hired her immediately when she became available, he wanted that acid tongue on his team.

    • Raina says:

Considering she originates from demon folk, she should thread lightly. Even if she identifies as Demon American, she should still refrain from asking these absurd questions that have no bearing to the current state of affairs.

I bet she has the best table in hell; right next to the fireplace.

My theory is she and her husband have a good cop/bad cop arrangement.
My secondary theory is that she, as a Catholic lol, refuses to grant him a divorce (for various reasons) so he has resigned himself to insulting her God (boss) in public as punishment
Either way, this dungeon and Dragon display is hilarious.
This crypt keeper from hell can enjoy the ride for NOW. Last stop, somewhere hot

  2. Cidy says:

God these people are vile. My 11 year old niece asked me the other day “what does it mean when the president is racist.” We had tried for a long time to not watch the news around the kids, but they know. I didnt know what to tell her, because hes still in office, any “punishments” are nothing – hes not going anywhere. But my little black niece is asking me “what does it mean?” I cant tell her “well baby there are racists absolutely everywhere and they get away with literal murder.” Instead I just said – “I dont know.”

    • CharliePenn says:

Cidy I’m so sorry for your little niece and for yourself. I’m just so sad and sorry and lost. I guess maybe you’ll speak with her parents about how to answer these questions in the future? It’s so hard to find the words….

I know that white supremacists have a hatred for my family, because I am a white woman who “polluted the bloodline” (please know this is the sentiment of white supremacists and not mine) by having children with a Hispanic man. The day will come when my children will understand that they are hated by a growing chunk of horrible Americans, simply because of the fact that they are white and Hispanic. How will I ever tell them? How will I find the words to explain? I hate it. I hate Kellyanne too.

    • Erinn says:

It’s crazy. My friend teaches elementary in Nova Scotia – and the kids are still SUPER aware of what’s going on with US politics. Even the younger ones – like 8 or 9 year olds.

  3. AlwaysAnnaRun says:

Way to deflect, Kellyanne. Maybe someone should bring up by she bailed on her Hatch Act violation hearing.

  4. Jen says:

I still don’t know what’s more shocking to me-how racist and hateful these people are, or just how incredibly stupid they are.

She’s trying to spin it as “he meant it as go back to where your ancestors are from.” I’m speechless. We’re not all as slow as you are, Kell.

    • Rapunzel says:

The MAGAts are always defending Trump by saying, “that not what he meant” to say. Apparently, this grown ass man hasn’t learned how to talk properly after 73 years.

I tell the folks who use this defense that I expect the president to know how to say what he means, and will not apologize for holding the leader of our country to that basic standard. And I will always assume that he meets that standard, no matter what he says, thus I refuse to accept these “clarifications” because doing so infantilizes him, by making it out that he’s a baby who doesn’t know how to talk clearly. And why would someone who supports him want that?

That usually shuts the MAGAts up.

      • Christina says:

Rapunzel, that is my new argument for anyone who hits me with “he didn’t mean it that way”. Brilliant!

I just can’t anymore. This has made me so depressed that I need to pull back from the news. I live in California. The the only way I can help is to keep donating and/or move to a red state to be a minority who votes in a red state. This is simply nauseating. Our country is filled with racists who agree with this witch.

      • Cindy says:

Actually I’ve used the same defense before, but their answer is that he spoke clearly and that’s why they understood. I didn’t understand because I’m a stupid snowflake and I’m always looking for reasons to be offended and assume the worst out of everything he says.

Sigh. I just don’t bother with them anymore. Trump could say Earth is actually flat and I have no doubt in my mind these people would find some kind of defense for that.

      • Rapunzel says:

        Cindy,

But if he spoke clearly then why are they saying, “that’s not what he meant.”? Also, someone clear should be understood by even the stupidest snowflake. And if people are always looking for reasons to be offended and assuming the worst, then isn’t that all the more reason for Trump to choose his words carefully ?

Just some rebuttals for you to have handy if you don’t already.

      • Giddy says:

I’m done arguing with the Deplorables. I now have a stock answer when someone tries to excuse the white nationalist in the White House with something like the “he didn’t mean it that way” defense. I don’t argue or waste my time. I just say bullshit and walk away.

    • TQB says:

      and how is THAT better??

  5. Redgrl says:

Her swastika is showing. What’s scarier is the amount of Americans (and others world wide) who agree with her.

  6. Sean says:

What’s worse is that his supporters don’t see it as racism. I made the grave error of asking my Trump supporting mother what she thought about Trump’s comments towards the Congresswomen. She said it was not racist, just crude because that’s how Trump is.

    • B n A fan says:

They know he’s racist and see it as racist but will not admit it until he tells them it’s racist. I don’t care what they say they knows the truth.

      • cannibell says:

It’s fascinating in the most disturbing of ways to see how people can twist straight-up evil into something that doesn’t challenge their world view.

May every one of their teeth but one fall out of their collective heads, and may that tooth have a toothache. (Yiddish curse.)

      • Kitten says:

BNA Fan-you explained that far more succinctly than I did but yes, exactly that.

      • vava says:

I don’t think they’d acknowledge it as racist even if Trump did. They worship this guy and he can do no wrong in their views.

    • Kitten says:

Deep-down most know that it was racist. They do. They just don’t care.
They have Fox News and the entire GOP to provide them with an excuse, but they don’t actually believe it.
As long as they have something to parrot, they will.
Anything to avoid acknowledging the reality.

In private, I would imagine that most of his supporters have said similar things.

      • Esmom says:

Agreed. Stephen Miller or whoever wrote that tweet knew exactly what he/she was doing. Trump is such a useful idiot for them, because I honestly think Trump doesn’t care enough about this stuff to have a real opinion. He lets his inner circle dictate the agenda as long as it keeps him in power, imo.

      • Kitten says:

True but I also think this is how Trump probably feels, anyway.

Remember his discriminatory practice of not renting to people of color, the ad about the Central Park Five, the widespread accusations that he used the N-word on the set of the Apprentice, “Nazis are fine people”, “Mexicans are rapists and drug dealers”, “shithole countries” and on and on. I suspect that in the past, Trump has been warned to hide his racism in polite company as that shit doesn’t fly in some NYC social circles not to mention some of the Hollywood circles he used to run in.
So he’s at least partially conditioned to know that you shouldn’t say racist things out loud–different from Miller who has always been very outspoken with his racism, bigotry and xenophobia.

But Trump has now learned that racism is red meat to his base and he’s surrounded by racists in the GOP and his own administration. Racist comments have become both normalized and useful to him.

      • Esmom says:

Kitten, Yes, you’re absolutely right. I guess my point is generally he’s just not strategic, especially in the office of POTUS where I tend to think he retreats with his TV so much because it’s all overwhelming to him. I do believe he believes these things yet I never get much conviction from him — it’s more like he’s always performing.

I’m not very good at articulating much of anything these days, sigh.

      • Kitten says:

No I completely understand what you mean. I do think he ratchets up his racism in a way that feels very performative. Put it this way: if his base hated racism and bigotry, he wouldn’t be letting his racist flag fly like this. He is CONSTANTLY speaking to his base.

As far as struggling to articulate, my comments downthread are a mess so I feel you. It’s hard to properly express how we feel when we are being inundated with terrible news every. single. day.

        Hang in there, friend.

      • Tiffany :) says:

The sad thing is that this satiates his base without his actually having to get anything done. He didn’t have to get legislation passed, or fix a long term problem, or propose a solution. He just had to stroke their hate boners and he gets an incredible boost to their loyalty and support. It’s cheap and gross.

      • Algernon says:

They don’t want to admit it because it means admitting they are racist, too. If you support a racist, you are also racist. They don’t want to reckon with that.

      • Esmom says:

Thanks, Kitten. Nice you see you around these parts again. You hang in there, too. 🙂

      • Christina says:

Trump supporters keep saying that it isn’t fair to call them racsist because they support his policies and not his racism, but they can’t prioritize the humanity of people of color and asylum seekers over money, and they can’t see their own family’s struggles to get here in those of people who look like the Squad. Their support means that they support racism, something that denies humanity. It’s so frustrating that Stephen Miller’s beliefs are SOP now.

  7. IlsaLund says:

Trump and company know this plays well with the base and all those who fanatically support him. Honestly, this is a non issue for them cause it’s their world view—us and everyone else. They’re the descendants of people who supported slavery, extermination of indigenous people and exploitation of all non-white immigrants. There are two America’s same as it’s always been. They’ve always been there waiting for the day to crawl out of the shadows.

And why isn’t more being said about how voicing dissent and questioning things is what democracy is all about. Trump & company are anti democracy in their views and actions. Those congresswomen are perfect examples of democracy at work.

  8. Jerusha says:

Might be time to stop using the euphemism C U Next Tuesday for certain people.

    • schmootc says:

I saw the clip of her actually asking the question and that’s the first word that came out of my mouth. Because she’s just plain VILE. And, though I swear like a sailor, that’s not one I use.

      • Jerusha says:

It wasn’t a word I used until the last few years. Actually, I think toxic Ann Coulter was the first time I applied it.

  9. Digital Unicorn says:

God she’s morphing into Trump – she’s as orange as he is and that hair, clearly she’s started using the same hair dye as him from the Dictator range by Fascism or Dye.

  10. boredblond says:

The reporter should’ve pointed out that pos trump said terrible things about the country when he was running (and only I can fix them..) and that he always calls Bernie S. a socialist, but never tells him to ‘go back’..just more proof of his stoking racism/sexism for his mob.

    • B n A fan says:

I always say to my family and friends, every time that mans open his mouth he’s always bitching about something wrong with the country. He bitch about President Obama’s, he bitch about Hillary, he bitch about the border, he bitch about black people living in crime infected areas, remember”what you got to loose”. Ect. Now he wants to send these elected congresswoman to wherever because they should not say anything is wrong with this country. His campaign slogan is MEGA if everything was so great why is he saying make America great again if it’s so great now. The man is insane, jmo.

    • Lightpurple says:

His campaign slogan was an attack on the United States.

I spent yesterday laughing at how they were going to get these women voted out of office in 2020. No Republican has run for the seat Ayanna Pressley holds since 1998. I don’t see them finding one to unseat her in the next year. And if they think they’ll primary her, with who? The Republicans definitely don’t want Capuano back.

      • Kitten says:

On the news yesterday they had a reporter interviewing people in my district and by and large, people condemned Trump and praised Pressley. She’s not going anywhere.

If Warren wins the presidential nom, I want Capuano to challenge whichever Republican candidate Baker replaces her with. I would LOVE to have him in the Senate.

      • Lightpurple says:

        Kitten,

I would love to see Capuano in the Senate. I would especially love if his nephew went door to door asking for our votes but that’s beside the point. Ayanna had a high approval rating on the Boston City Council where she was seen as a dealmaker and a unifier. She’s definitely not going away so they can fantasize all they want. I do think if that Senate seat opens up the special election will be a free for all. Baker’s appointee can’t run for the seat – those are the rules. The GOP’s actual strongest possible candidate would be Karen Polito, nobody else has name recognition and none of them have charisma. Polito would pull the Worcester area but not sure how she would do elsewhere. The 128 belt is always difficult to predict because they’re the most attracted to shiny objects, which is how we got Senator Centerfold. But if a space becomes vacant, they’re all going to be nervous about what Maura Healey wants to do. She is not going to stay where she is if she can go elsewhere. If she goes for the Senate, it’s hers. But if she doesn’t run, that’s a strong indication that she’s positioning to challenge for Governor. And if Polito runs for Senate, it indicates Baker is going for a third term. If he weren’t, Polito would stay right where she is and run to replace him.

      • Kitten says:

LOL yeah I would definitely answer my door if I knew Chris Evans was canvassing 😉

So you’re saying that whoever Baker nominates to fill the vacant seat cannot then run in the special election? Interesting. I did not know that.
If Maura becomes governor and Capuano became a senator I would be happy AF.
Interesting analysis, LP, thank you…also LOL @ Senator Centerfold.

      • Lightpurple says:

The legislature didn’t want to give a Republican Governor (Romney) the right to appoint a Senator or congressional representative, so they set it up for a special election with the provision that a governor could appoint a temporary Senator but that person couldn’t run for the seat because incumbents hold an advantage. It backfired a bit when Kennedy died & the 128 belt got distracted with Senator Centerfold.

I wouldn’t count Katherine Clark out of a potential Senate run either

  11. Seraphina says:

Wrong. It is disrespectful. It is not disrespectful when I ask after I am asked where I’m from due to my “browner” skin.

And I cringe as I write this because everyone says he will get elected for another term. I think it’s one of the sign of the apocalypse, no????

    • Taryn says:

As an Indian woman born and raised in America, it absolutely makes my eyes roll back in to my head when I get asked where I’m from. Apparently New York and Queens isn’t a good enough answer because no “where are you REALLY from” is what they wanted to ask all along. It’s just a hidden statement for “if you’re from America why are you brown?” People view it as a harmless question but for me it’s always a constant reminder that I, an American woman could be walking down the street in my hometown next to a white Swedish man and only one of us to the outside would look like we truly belong in this country to some.

      • Seraphina says:

I hear everything you just said. I was once asked: what are you?? And I replied: a female. And I’m constantly reminded I stand out.

I had a coworker (blonde blue eyed male) tell me I don’t look “American”. That’s when I went full bitch mode. I said: I look more American than you do. The native Americans, who are the ingenious of this country, have skin and eyes more like mine than yours.

And when I hear an accent I ask people where they are from. Some tense up but when I answer that my parents are from a foreign country they immediately relax and we talk about different countries. It’s pretty awesome. And I learn things about other cultures.

      • Echo Chambers says:

Oh, my gosh, I hate that question. It jolts me ,from whatever I’m doing and reminds me that I don’t belong because I have brown skin even though I was born here. To me it’s a racist microaggression. Simply put, to be American is to be white. My Canadian (white) friend who works here in the U.S. NEVER gets asks “Where are you from?” She’s not an American citizen but I am! And Trump’s racist implication of “Go back to your country” sends the message to me that as an American citizen POC I’m not allowed to criticize anything, only white people are. It’s a censoring technique meant to silence and marginalize.

      • Trashaddict says:

I need to understand if there are any situations where it’s OK to ask a person’s family origin and trying to think of the right way to ask this. If I’m wanting to know whether a colleague might speak a certain language it would be different if they came from Pakistan vs. India or China vs. Korea. Or, if I’m interested in terms of understanding the culture their family came from, is there a nontriggering way to ask this?

    • OriginalLala says:

I get asked that all the damn time – “so, where are you from?” , I hate it! It’s so othering….

  12. Dewdrop says:

her sweaty chest right under her matte face was truly hypnotizing.

  13. HK9 says:

Every time I hear this woman open her mouth my first impulse is to punch her in the throat. I know that won’t solve the issue, but people who are complicit with this nonsense drive me crazy.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Conway is only in it for the money. She is a fake who knows how to suck up to Chump.

If Planned Parenthood offer her a Million Dollar$ a year to do their PR she would become Pro-Choice so fast your head would spin and detach from your neck. This is woman is NOTHING but a PAID media troll. I think Morning Joe on MSNBC has refused to have her on the show anymore because she will not answer questions and is a known paid media troll.

      • Seraphina says:

Do you think she ha any thoughts that he may one day throw her under the bus like so many others???? I wonder what her skill is at surviving it for this long.

      • cannibell says:

Evidently before Samantha Bee had her own show, she interviewed Kellyanne on “The Daily Show.” The adjective Bee used when Jimmy Kimmel asked what she was like was: “thirsty (that happens at about 1:03).”

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srUza70FIic

      • BayTampaBay says:

        @Seraphina,

This Conway person may be thirsty and greedy but she is not dumb. I am sure she has the goods with all receipts on Chump safely under lock & key in a fireproof safe somewhere. This woman is vile. She would do anything and I mean ANYTHING for money.

      • Seraphina says:

@baytampabay. Yes I guess it takes vile and crazy to be able to work with vile and crazy. I always assume everyone thinks like me. I need to stop that!!!

  14. adastraperaspera says:

Conway is desperate to distract from the fact that she ignored a subpoena and faces fines and jail for that–oh, and for conspiring with a foreign power to attack the U.S. Don’t forget that none other than Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska (the one Manafort owes millions to) owns the huge mansion next to hers in D.C. He bought it in 2006, and in 2017 she bought the place next door. There are no coincidences with this crew. The Trump administration toadies are using racism to distract from what they are really up to–which is the destruction of western liberal democracy.

    • BeanieBean says:

Well that is interesting. And also terrifying–how the hell do we fix this? The corruption is deep & wide.

    • Robinda says:

Just to be clear, I am not defending this woman in the slightest, but just wanted to say that, whatever else she’s done, there is absolutely no threat to her of jail or fines for failing to honor the subpoena. Criminal Contempt of Congress is referred to the Justice Department for prosecution. Congress can’t enforce its own subpoenas. No Justice Dept. goes after it’s own administration members for a contempt citation brought by the opposing party. Holder during the Obama administration was the same situation. Unfortunately, Conway in jail isn’t something we get to look forward to.

  15. Mumbles says:

….and this is why I’m not buying this hag’s husband’s grift. If he truly believed even a fraction of the stuff he says, he would not be able to live with this hateful, soulless person.

    • adastraperaspera says:

True. His job in this was to act reasonable so he could convince moderates to vote for Brett Kavanaugh SCOTUS confirmation. George Conway worked with Kavanaugh on the Clinton impeachment in the 1990s–they are all thick as thieves.

    • Lightpurple says:

They don’t actually live together but they are still married with no signs of ending that. He’s just working to keep them positioned well should the party shift to a more moderate stance. He’s still ultra-conservative.

  16. Ninks says:

As an Irish person, it actually sickens me how many Irish Americans are in Trump’s circle. It’s not that long ago that Irish immigrants in the US were the ones who were unwanted because they were the wrong religion, the wrong race, from the wrong country, spoke the wrong language. They were refugees, displaced by poverty, famine, removed from their homes to clear up land for the wealthy ruling class. They sailed to America to make a better life for themselves and their families. That’s the family history of each and every one of those people. How dare she stand there and use her Irish heritage to defend a racist and his racist policies.

    • Lukwesa says:

Irish Americans were never the wrong race. The other things like wrong ethnicity and religion, yes, but they were not undesirable because of their race: they’re white ffs. My black ass is tired of hearing the white Irish cry that they had it as bad as us Africans. They didnt.

      • Kitten says:

        Exactly. Not the same thing.

As someone who grew up in an Irish-Catholic town I have to say: probably the worst racist shit I’ve ever heard is from Irish people towards the black kids who were bussed into our school via METCO program. Around Boston, most of the racists are of Italian or Irish descent.

      • Kitten says:

I’m commenting again because my original comment was sloppy and I know someone will say that I’m calling all Italian Americans or Irish Americans racist. I’m not. Some of my best friends are of those nationalities and needless to say they are NOT racist.

Racism is a white person thing, not always dictated by the person’s origin. For instance, my BF grew up in Iowa where people are largely of Norwegian and German descent. As such, most of the racists that he knew growing up were of German or Norwegian descent. I grew up in an area that was largely populated by Irish and Italian and as such most of the racists I knew were descendents of those two countries.

Racists come in all different nationalities.

Now I feel like I hijacked the thread. Sigh. Sorry. Struggling today…

      • Esmom says:

No, Lukwesa, the Irish weren’t and didn’t. My parents were immigrants from not Ireland but Europe and my mom talks about how in high school she was shunned for being a “DP.” Yet, in the pecking order, she was less undesirable than the African Americans on the south side of Chicago where she landed. I think these white immigrants made themselves feel less inferior by otherizing people based on their skin color. It was so bad in Chicago back in the 50s and 60s and in many ways nothing has changed here at all. It’s gross.

      • Kitten says:

Yeah exactly, Esmom. Even among immigrants there was a hierarchy and black people were at the bottom of the chain, even though many had been in the country far longer than the white immigrants.

      • kerwood says:

Exactly. See: New York draft riots during the Civil War. The second the Irish arrived in the US they started spitting on African Americans, who had been there for hundreds of years.

    • Ninks says:

@Lukwesa You’re right, I should have said ethnicity instead of race. I wasn’t trying to imply that Irish Americans had it as bad as African Americans at all, but that there are massive parallels between how the Irish were treated in 19th century America and how Muslims and South American immigrants.

    • Lightpurple says:

The first immigration laws in the US were written to keep out Chinese women and Irish families while blacks were still enslaved and Natives were being killed, forced from their lands, and put on reservations. These groups were pitted against one another for survival, forced to compete against one another for jobs and opportunities and taught to fear and hate the “other,” all while the Vanderbilts and the Rockerfellers and the Morgans and others built tremendous fortunes. It’s a disgraceful history.

  17. B n A fan says:

She was sweating 😓 like a pig because she’s a pig, beads was running down her chest because she’s such a dispictable liar. I will not say I hate her but I’m close.

  18. Ann says:

This whole stupid show is meant to distract people who aren’t part of the MAGAt base. Getting the deplorables to huff and puff about how poor trumpy isn’t a racist! is just a happy side effect. The rest of us are supposed to be occupied with the racism while ignoring the Epstein situation and the rape allegations. Trump knows he’s screwed if Epstein goes to trial. I expect the racism to continue and get much worse in the weeks to come.

    • Christin says:

Plus it distracts from health care being dismantled in the courts. And many. many other awful things.

    • Original T.C. says:

The Epstein trial will still get attention, CNN has 24hrs to fill. Still, in the end his supports will call the victims “whores trying to get money” from a disturbed old man. It’s not going to get the liberals to hate him more than they do now. The Independents will check their stock portfolios to see if they really care about punishing pedophiles.

    • Lilybugg says:

This was exactly what I was thinking. He doesn’t care that we are all being distracted by this conversation, because it will distract people from the whole Epstein debacle.

  19. Ocho says:

I think Trump and Conway’s remarks play a lot better to his base than images of dirty children sitting alone on a cot with only a foil blanket for comfort.

I would like to see the media return to covering the detention centres, ICE raids and Epstein trial.

    • Tigerlily says:

Ocho-yes don’t the media get that this is all to distract from Epstein? It gets too close to Trump and so he does/says something racist and deplorable and -bingo-no more coverage of Epsteins ties to Trump. SMH

  20. Tootsie McJingle says:

I spoke to someone just yesterday about Trump being racist. (He claims not to be a Trump supporter yet never criticized him and often defends him) Despite Trump literally writing “go back where you came from”, this man still did not believe Trump was racist. It’s mind blowing.

  21. Tanguerita says:

till 2016 I’d never believed that I might be capable of such a pure visceral hate for other human beings. But now I know that, given a chance i would hurt her. Literally hit her in the throat. Don’t even start me on her boss.

  22. Veronica S. says:

I recently told an Israeli friend who was considering visiting the country to stay the hell away from America for the next couple of years. I’m not even joking when I say that if you have the ability to get out, now is the time. I’m looking at 2020 with a grim sense of unreality and a grimmer sense of what reality does await us if he gets back in. “Dark underbelly” makes it pretty clear who they think is ruining this country. I’m afraid for them.

    • Kitten says:

Yes. I’ve become a broken record at this point but we must always remember that it WILL get worse.

And AOC, Pressley, Omar, Tlaib are all in danger. In my darkest moments I envision a Trumpster attacking one of them. AOC has already had some creeper hiding in her closet. These women are so courageous–a quality that is sorely lacking in our current political climate.

      • CityGirl says:

Me too, Kitten. When Obama was first elected president I jumped for joy and celebration and then immediately fell to my knees and prayed for his and his family’s safety.

      • Kitten says:

Yes it’s the EXACT same feeling of dread, CityGirl.

  23. The Recluse says:

I have two snarky answers I would have loved to throw back at her:
    1. I’m a human being. What are you?
    2. I’m Denisovan, Neanderthal, and Homo sapiens.

  24. minx says:

    I loathe this woman.

  25. Nicegirl says:

    I’m afraid, too.

  26. Jennie says:

Trump did say “originally came from” in his tweet, go back and read it again and stop lying just to pad your narrative.

    • Rapunzel says:

No, no he did NOT say “originally came from” but nice try. How about you reread his tweet?

      • Jennie says:

        Yes, he did.
His tweet: “So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly……”

    • Jerusha says:

What’s your point? That makes it better somehow? No one is allowed to dissent from the Supreme Leader? Unless you’re Native American this isn’t your birthright either. Stupidity knows no bounds.
PS Three of the Congresswomen were born in America and the fourth came here as a ten year old. She is now an American citizen and has been a citizen longer than the illegal immigrant First Porn Lady and her chain migration parents. Just in case Faux or Breitbart didn’t mention that.

    • Veronica S. says:

“Guys, stop padding your narrative by stating he was incredibly racist instead of just overtly racist! EQUAL REPRESENTATION!!!!”

    • minx says:

      Please, stop.

    • Rapunzel says:

      Original DT tweet:

“So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly ..and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how…”

He did not say for them to go back to where they originally came from. Saying they originally came from other countries is not the same thing. Also, 3 out of the 4 people he mentioned originally came from the US. That’s where they were born.

      • Veronica S. says:

I like how you posted the whole quotation, which gets increasingly and more horrifically racist, unintelligible, and insulting in its implications as it’s read in context, and literally expect everybody on this board to think it’s some kind of academically sound recourse to what’s stated here over semantics of all things. It’s like running in to take the kettle off the stove when the house is on fire and then chastising the fire company for leaving it behind.

    • Lightpurple says:

Ayanna Pressley originally came from Ohio. Her family has been in the US longer than Trump’s

    • MellyMel says:

      Oh Lord…here y’all go…

  27. Steph says:

At what point does your grandparents home country stop mattering in terms of being America ? I’m a fourth generation American on one side and an original occupant of this land from dad’s paternal/maternal side (I’m a quarter native). My family has been mixed for three generations before me.

If asked, I always says European and Native are my family history but I’m an American. At what degree can we just say this versus my family is Irish or Italian???

    • Kitten says:

I mean..there’s no hard and fast rule for this kind of thing and it’s never our place to label or identify others. It’s up to the individual to determine how they self-identify.

For instance, I know people who are third or fourth generation Italians who are very much in-touch with their Italian heritage. The food they cook, the traditions they have etc. are all wrapped up in that nationality. Likewise, I know Jewish folks who grew up with all the traditions associated with the culture yet don’t identify much with their Jewish heritage. It a really subjective thing.

For me personally, my mother is from France and my dad is second generation Lithuanian. I identify more with my French heritage because I was raised by a SAHM who was still learning the English language when I was a little kid. Culturally, the French side is more influential and prominent in my family than the Lithuanian side.

So sure, I’m an American always but I’m also a French citizen as well and that part of my identity is very important to my sense of self. I would imagine it’s the same for a lot of other people, even if they’re third of fourth gen Americans.

      • Laughysaphy says:

Hey, a fellow Lithuanian! My great grandparents emigrated from Lithuania in the early 1900s. I’ve never actually met anyone else of Lithuanian descent outside of my family, this is very cool!

      • Kitten says:

        Labas! 🙂
Oh really? We have a lot of Liths around the Boston area although fewer and fewer as gentrification pushes the older Lithuanian families out.

My older brother married a woman of Lithuanian descent and she just came back from her first trip to Lithuania. She was able to do some sleuthing on Facebook and found some cousins and some other distance relatives. She and her mom went to a big family reunion out there and her one cousin was the only ones who spoke English lol…bit awkward but fun.
My parents went 8 years ago or so and absolutely LOVED it. They also did Latvia and Estonia and some of the photos they took are incredidible. I’m dying to go to Vilnius. Some day, I hope…

Anyway, always nice to say hello to a fellow Lithuanian!

      • Lightpurple says:

There’s a small Lithuania pocket in Boston between the neighborhoods of Southie and Dorchester, which is contained in a slightly larger Polish community. There was a “Polish church” in the neighborhood that would hold most of its masses in Polish but one mass a week would be in Lithuanian.

      • Audrey says:

I’m Lithuanian too! Both my parents were born in Europe (bullied about being DPs when they came here in the 40s.) I’m first generation and my parents are immigrants. Sveiks!

  28. Lisa says:

If I were the reporter, I’d say “same as Stevie Miller” then ask if this racist diversion tweetstorm was to throw us off from Epstein and Trump with underage children

  29. EMF999 says:

This reminds me of how I distract my 9 month old puppy from chewing my shoes by calling “squirrel”. In this case, we are being distracted from Trump’s links to Epstein. It’s scary how effective they are at putting on these sideshows. Vile people.

  30. Cay says:

Does it bother anyone else that these women are called The Squad? I don’t know who gave them that label, but it seems to me to be a dismissive name as if they are some pop culture lightweights. We are supposed to be reminded of Taylor Swift, I think, and not take them seriously as the smart, strong women they are. You don’t see Jim Jordan, Mark Meadows, Kevin McCarthy, and Steve Scalise called The Wolf Pack.

    • Kitten says:

Congresswoman Pressley touched on that during their presser a couple nights ago. By “squad” they mean a coalition and the coalition consists of ALL of us who support these women in their resistance against this administration. The *squad* is every single one of us who opposes Trump.

  31. teehee says:

Lets not forget the ole: the only people who do belong here, are the native americans. We ALLLLL came from other countries before 200 years and NONE of us “belong here” in the strictest sense. So what the hell exactly are they even saying? It makes absolutely no sense.

  32. ChillyWilly says:

I think we should all go back to our ancestors countries of origin and let the Native Americans have their land back. FFS…I am so sick of these racist, ignorant mother effers acting like only white people are American.

  33. Incredulous says:

https://i.imgur.com/n1r2H0R.png Does this old poster for the American Nazi Party remind anyone of anything?

  34. Sean says:

This is hard for me to write because this will include my parents and other family members but I’ve come to believe Trump supporters are evil; not just supporting evil.

Listening to their explanations for why they or Trump aren’t racist reminds me of how Captain G.M. Gilbert defined evil. He was the Army psychologist who was in charge of evaluating the nazi war criminals during the Nuremberg trials: “In my work with the defendants I was searching for the nature of evil and I think I have com close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow man. Evil, I think is the absence of empathy.”

Every Trump supporter I know claims they feel bad for the plight of the migrants at the border but at the same time will say that’s what they get for trying to enter the country “illegally.” Every Trump supporter I know says they find Trump himself abhorrent but the want the Republican agenda so they back him. As long as they get what they want or think they’re getting what the want, they don’t care who gets hurt as long as they’re not personally inconvenienced.

Another note, something else that scares me is how Trump supporters talk about civil war. I know with current tensions, a second civil war breaking out is a fear a lot of people have. However, the Trump supporters I know are the only people who say they want one. I knew people as far back as 2012 who hated what Obama “was doing to the country” a d said we needed another civil war to “take back our country.” Those people went on to support Trump. Everyone I know who doesn’t support him is afraid of a civil war.

    • Kitten says:

RE: the civil war stuff. I go back and forth on that. I’ve had moments when I’ve felt fearful because so many of these nutters own the majority of guns in our country, plenty of them have military training, many are itching for a fight–but then I remember all the protests I went to the first couple years Trump was in office. I look at the most recent protests taking place at ICE facilities and elsewhere, I look at the Unite the Right rallies and I look at Trump’s rallies.

      Basically, we outnumber them.

Also, these people are COWARDS. I mean, truly. When we heard that white nationalists were planning to congregate here in MA a couple years ago we mobilized and it ended up being about 9 Nazis to our 3 million counter-protestors. And that’s been pretty much the same scenario in all of the recent Alt-Right rallies. As far as Trump rallies go, the people who aren’t being paid to be there are mostly people who are attracted to the entertainment factor of his rallies. They like the camaraderie. They’re a cult of personality that surround Trump, but I don’t think most would risk their lives to defend him.

So yeah. I think ultimately these people would hide in their homes rather that fight. The only thing that’s worrisome would be if Trump managed to get the US army behind him. I try not to let my imagination go bananas about stuff like that though. We have to believe that resisters are a stronger, more powerful coalition of people that Trump’s lunatic cultists.

      • Sean says:

I would agree most of them are cowards and wouldn’t actually fight if a war was started. Also the average Trump supporter is middle to senior aged, overweight and not athletic. Not a good fit for a soldier. It’s their rhetoric that scares me, especially the ones who have military training or own guns.

While I am not necessarily fearing a civil war, I do fear an increase of violent outbursts by Trump supporters. If he is voted out next year, I expect the subsequent months to be very dangerous. Trump will do whatever he has to stay in power and God knows what he’ll call on his supporters to do. For example, I have a coworker who is your typical Trumper- in his 50s and obese. However, he served in the navy during his youth, owns guns and supports the NRA. He’s been overheard telling other Republican colleagues he believes Democrats should be killed. I have a fear in the back of my mind he’ll try to cause an incident.

      • Jerusha says:

He’s holding a Nazi rally in Greenville, NC tonight to froth about “those who hate America.”

  35. Baltimom says:

Total dog whistle. I knew a skinhead whose pick up line was “What’s your heritage?” I guess now it is “What’s your ethnicity?” She didn’t even have a good follow up for what she asked or why. Was she trying to say we should all go back to our heritage countries? Because I doubt many of them would take us.

  36. Liz version 700 says:

I feel like he is trying to incite to distract from the Epstein bail hearings. Not that he isn’t a racist race bating klan loving a$$, just that he is hoping to start a race baiting race war to distract from his bromance with the child sex trafficker. It is all smoke and destroy the country mirrors with him.

  37. Aeren says:

Her sweaty chest looks like she is melting. I can’t stand looking at her, much less listening to this woman. She makes absolutely no sense ever. Why does the journalist (who is there to ask questions) have to answer her question but she can’t answer his?

  38. h3Rh1GHN3SS says:

I’m 38 & often shocked by the behavior of the govt, but then I recall how it was founded. with huma trafficking of African people, now I’m a black person descended from that, so where the hell are we supposed to go. we were robbed of a documented history.

    • Joanna says:

That is sad. My husband pointed out to me that African Americans can only research their family genealogy so far. Because when slaves were sold, they were often forced to take the slave master’s name. Very sad

  39. kerwood says:

This creature is living proof that you get the face you deserve. Her ugliness has oozed out of her soul and she wears it every day. I wonder what it’s like to be her and look in the mirror. No wonder she’s so full of hate.

  40. WatchingATrainwreak says:

Kellyanne Conway…”a lot of us are sick and tired of this Country…” Does that mean she hates the United States? According to Trump, if one is critical of the country, one is unpatriotic & should go back to where they came from. Kellyanne, feel free to take your boss’s advice, it applies to you too unless; of course, you’re finally admitting that Trump is a racist & that he only says that to women of color.

    • Joanna says:

Yeah, I’m confused. I thought American was #1 and if you didn’t agree, you were welcome to leave?

  41. Christine says:

I fucking hate her and Trump! She is the roughest looking 52 I’ve ever seen. Pure evil! I don’t like her woke husband either!

  42. Joanna says:

God dawg it, when you think we can’t sink any longer, we do. I never in a million years thought such vile words/actions would have NO consequences. At this point, I have ZERO faith in the checks and balances of our judicial system. Obama wears a brown suit, all hell breaks loose. Trump calls himself a white nationalist, uses racial slurs and not a peep. My God, I realize how much white privilege I have now. I always know being white was an advantage for me, but God, I did not realize how much.

  43. Dury Judy says:

    Today it’s ” What’s your ethnicity?”
    Tomorrow it’s “Your papers!”

  44. Str8Shooter says:

Soulless skank. Good Lord. What a vile excuse for a human being
