Duchess Kate wears shorts (!!) and a ponytail for the King’s Cup regatta

SOCCER : USA vs Netherland - Final Women s world cup - 07/07/201

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge must have gotten some sun on their Mustique holiday, because both of them felt comfortable enough with the state of their legs to wear SHORTS for today’s King’s Cup regatta. I’m saying that out of jealousy – while my half-Indianness means that I’m always a light brown, my legs are looking very pale right now. So I don’t wear shorts outside, which means they’ll stay pale. It’s a vicious cycle. Anyway, behold! Some photos of William, Kate and Bear Grylls taking part in the sailing competition.

I don’t have anything to say about the clothing choices here – they all seem to be wearing specially-made King’s Cup polos and jackets. I’m actually sort of shocked that Kate didn’t wear jeggings, but I don’t know how warm it is on the Isle of Wight right now. Maybe she thought “jeggings are always right, but today I want to wear shorts.” Once on their respective competing sailboats, Will and Kate wore their safety harnesses and Kate wore a cute baseball hat too. She really does look cute when she gets to be sporty. Is it just me or does her hair look crazy-long in that ponytail?

She looks really good! That’s all I have to add.

  2. Joja says:

Are they going to write articles about the elitism and diversity of this event?
Not impressed by her short.William is funny…

    • Mignionette says:

      Exactly!

    • bonobochick says:

I noticed the pic KP tweet was qwhite interesting.

I haven’t seen much from the RRs on the event, which is odd with them being a future King and Queen Consort.

      • Harper says:

Omid Scobie from harpers bazaar said on Twitter that he was planning on going tomorrow, but that the date change caused a conflict in his schedule. He’s probably not the only one who wasn’t able to make it today.

      • bamaborn says:

Bono…they are recuperating from the roasting they received for harrassing someone who’s trying to do good by people.

      • pomme de chine says:

They had to change the date because of poor weather, which is
        – good if you don’t want people to risk being hurt or killed
        but also
        – somehow a sign of W and K’s vanity or something? hard to keep up with the speculating.

    • Yami says:

Is it unconscious bias that all these people are white and that’s accepted as standard. Let’s ask Camilla Tominey!!

      • PrincessK says:

        Well said!

      • Rogue says:

Yes the royal reporters look like the hypocrites they are when there’s no comment about diversity/elitism/royals supporting luxury brands as there was just last week with Vogue. They should at least try to appear impartial.

Also remember the furore when Meghan wore that Reformation dress during the Australasia tour? but sure it’s crickets now. I personally think people police these women too much. A little leg showing isn’t going to kill anyone.

Kate looks in her element at sport events which is nice to see. Sure the whole family had a nice day&lots of ££ was raised.

@Baytampabay- there are things I find problematic about Charles- but what I meant is it’s a shame the royal press tends to have singular focus on the gossip stuff about him and now his kids and their partners, because that stuff seems to overshadow a lot of his incredible achievements.

  3. MrsBanjo says:

I’m the same way with my skin. Mostly light brown but my legs and upper body that never see the sun are much more pale. I always cover a lot of my body so that’s something that won’t change, but yeah. It’s funny to look at sometimes.

    • Léna says:

Haha I have the same thing! I went to Vietnam 2 weeks in June, I was mostly wearing leggings and t shirt. My upper body and face are now super tanned but my belly and held my legs are really white. I looked stupid on the beach last week lol

    • Donn says:

I live in Miami and have gone on cruises with my sisters, one from Fort Lauderdale and one from DC. We’re not sunbathers, but people from other parts pf the country definitely look pale compared to me and my other sister from Florida. When you live down here you definitely always have some tan.

  4. Kittycat says:

I’m black and I never understood the obsession with getting a tan.

My white coworkers keep going on and on about it.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

It must be so strange. Like, suddenly darker skin is a status symbol but only when someone is actually really white? Supposedly the obsession with tanning came from its ability to signal that you could afford to travel somewhere sunny, but then again, if it’s ‘whiteness’ that’s so valuable, this is messed up. We are a confused people, indeed.

      • AnnaKist says:

In modern times, smart people create products and services as status symbols, making them very attractive to certain people. Even smarter people create desires for goods and services, then *hey presto* they’ve got exactly what you desire. At a price.

      • horseandhound says:

before being pale was a status symbol because the people who tanned were the workers and the aristocrats could keep their pale skin, but now going to the vacation and getting tanned is what rich folks can do and poor can’t so now that’s a status symbol.

      • Greenleaf says:

I’m American Indian (like registered with a tribe and not like Elizabeth warren) with white features and these comments about skin tone make me uncomfortable. I look Italian in the winter but in the summer I get very dark regardless of whether or not I try to tan and I get all kinds of comments. It’s like people assume I’m trying to get dark when I’m just going outside and wearing sunscreen. It is obnoxious.

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

      Same.

    • AnnaKist says:

Oh, yes, Kittycat! I’m Italian, and have light olive skin. I’ve never had a tan, and never want a tan! I have one of my best friends staying right now. Last week, we had a discussion (fiiiiine, I lectured, as is my wont) about my future son-in-law’s 10-year-old daughter having to get quite a dark fake tan for a calisthenics competition. She HAD to have it. She’s 10, for heaven’s sake. And normally very pale. I know I might be taking it too far in some people’s opinion, and I’m not bothered, bu it made me think it was sending a message to all the little girls that their beautiful, natural, pre-pubescent look – whatever that is – is not good enough. Then my friend, of Maltese descent, pipes up and says she loves having a fake tan, and feels she looks healthier. . I said there’s no need for that *merda*, because she also has nice olive skin, and she does not look healthier because it’s obvious the tan is fake. And also, “it makes you look leathery and older”, so cop that. I just don’t get it, either. I love my pale skin. I love everyone’s natural skin. Just stop with the obviously fake tans. Not necessary.

    • Jadedone says:

I’m white, very pale and I have had people say some really negative things to me about being pale. it gave me a bit of a complex to the point where I wouldn’t wear shorts or skirts. Sometimes it’s not your obsession but other people’s ridicule that makes you want to tan.

      • AnnaKist says:

You’re right, Jadedone. Wear your shorts and skirts, show your beautiful milky skin with pride, and tell the nasty bitches to get stuffed. 👌 👍

      • Mel M says:

My in laws are darker completed white people and they have always been obsessed with being tan and getting out in the sun. I’ve known them for 20ish years now and they both now look well over their age because of it. My FIL has made remarks about my paleness many times over the year and then when my husband stopped tanning all the time like them they started making comments about him. They are so obsessed with physical appearances and make comments about everyone’s. Now he remarks about my kid’s complexion, two are darker and two are lighter.

      • AnnaKist says:

Tsk. Poor you, Mel. Your father-in-law sounds like a proper plonker. Keep your lovely light skin. Stay out of the sun as much as possible. If you’re anything like me, you are going to keep your lovely skin, and just wait, people are going to be telling you that you can’t possibly be *** years old yet!

      • tmbg says:

Oh yeah, I’ve been mocked for it. A stylist at a hair salon I went to kept making remarks and gawking at me as if I was a zoo animal. I hate summer to begin with, but wearing short sleeves is just salt in the wound! I don’t care how hot it is – if I’m going out anywhere, I wear pants.

I envy people with melanin. It looks so nice.

      • Turtledove says:

I am very pale and had always tended to be slightly “goth” so for most of my life, I religiously applied sunscreen and stayed pale all summer.

That said, as a kid, I got many serious sunburns. And in my 20s, I did the tanning salon for 2 summers. (I was very excited to be tan as it had NEVER happened before)

Now, in my 40s, I have had skin cancer removed FOUR times in 3 years.

Take care of your skin, no matter what shade it is.

    • Erinn says:

I’m SUPER fair. Like to the point where I have a very hard time finding foundation light enough. And I have a neutral undertone, which makes it harder because most brands will default to too pink for their very fair shades.

I add a HINT of fake tanner to make myself look less dead in the summer. But I refuse to actually tan.

No natural tan is a ‘safe’ tan. I have an aunt who went through a few rounds of skin cancer and I’ve basically become a vampire when it comes to sun exposure. And I’m fine with that.

      • LadyMTL says:

Erinn, I’m right there with you. I’m super pale (think almost sallow) but I have yellow-ish undertones so it’s incredibly difficult to find a good foundation that doesn’t cost a small fortune.

I honestly don’t know why people still cling to this belief that being tan is somehow making us look healthier…even my mom still buys into it, and she lost her 2nd husband – my stepfather – to melanoma. Every time I mention to her how unsafe it is to sit out in the sun she just says something along the lines of how nice she finds she looks when she has ‘some color’. My aunt uses fake tanners but my mom will still sit outside for an hour or two every few days, just reading and baking. Sigh.

      • AnnaKist says:

Good for you, Erinn! The Italian song, Tintarella Di Luna, was written just for us!

        https://lyrics-on.net/en/1044399-tintarella-di-luna-lyrics.html

** There quite a few versions on YouTube Mina’s is the original.

      • himmiefan says:

So my legs won’t blind people with their super whiteness, in the summer I use bronzer, with sunscreen on top, of course. On my face in the summer, I use an Hourglass powder that gives me a slight hint of a tan since more color than that just doesn’t look good with my fair skin – plus I need to cover the whiteness of my zinc oxide sunscreen.

      • kgeo says:

LadyMTL, I think it’s more that having a tan looks like you do stuff outside and that’s considered healthy in that robustness kind of way. I spent much of my youth outside without any protection, and I’m paying for it with the old lady brown spots on my shoulders and thighs at 36. I am still very active outside, but use THE WIDEST brim hat and ALL the sunscreen. I still catch a tan, though it’s much lighter than it would have been when I was younger. I think though that I actually look ‘healthier’ when I’ve been active outside and don’t get too tan than people who fake tan or just lay out. I guess that tanning was kind of a shortcut or a by proxy way to get that robust glow.

      • Erinn says:

        LadyMTL
I don’t get it either! My mom is SUPER tan – she worked in a garden center all summer. She tells me she wore sunscreen but I have my doubts haha. The Acadian roots didn’t show up in my complexion – the Scottish took over in that department. But a good chunk of mom’s family is Acadian heritage so the french/mi’kmaq genes clearly made it waaay easier for her to tan. My dads mom is the same though. She’s 93, and would spend every waking moment in the sun if she could. And she also gets very dark – but somehow won the genetic lottery and looks a lot younger than she is – no idea how she doesn’t have more wrinkles or some sun spots.

AnnaKist – I’m going to start telling people I have a moon tan! I love it!

himmiefan – that’s the one reason I use a little fake tanner – my face/arms are PALE. But they see sunlight much more than my legs haha. I just try to balance the legs out to match the less glowing white shade. I have a wedding to go to in a couple weeks, I might have to try the bronzer trick.

kgeo – that’s also possible. I think the kind of pale I am also doesn’t have that ‘alive’ glow that someone who gets outside seems to have haha. It’s almost like a ‘flat’ shade of white… having a little color tends to just be more flattering overall.

      • Himmiefan says:

Erinn, St. Tropez is a good bronzer.

      • Emily says:

I am VERY fair too. Doesn’t help with my Irish roots. I am usually the whitest person in the room. I can’t tan, I have to get a sunburn first (no thanks!!). The only time I “tanned” was when I worked at summer camps in high school/college. After being exposed to the sun on a daily basis for 6-8 weeks (and I wore sunscreen religiously), my skin would be a *smidge* less white (“darker” is too strong of a word). Since I was usually in the pool with my campers, I would get an awkward one piece swimsuit tan (we were not allowed to wear bikinis as counselors). Also back in the days when I wore flip flops, my feet would get a little bit darker with the wide brim of the flip flop imprinted on my feet.

I just spent 10 days in Greece and did not get any sunburns. Why? Because as my mom ingrained into me as a kid, I was constantly putting on sunscreen when in the sun. (I got comments when I got back that it “looked like I had never been.” Good, otherwise I’d be peeling right now from sunburns) When not in the sun, I was always seeking shade. My mom is the same at the beach. She’ll wear those swim shirts when she’s in the water so her arms, back, and chest stay protected. I’m 31 and constantly getting asked what I’m studying as everyone assumes I’m a college student. That’s because I stay out of the sun!

    • another kate says:

I like having a tan because I think it makes me look thinner haha.

    • Yup, Me says:

Same here. I was checking her legs out for muscle tone (I lift weights so I like muscle spotting on women) and it never occurred to me that she should be more confident in the appearance of her legs because she’d recently spent some time baking her flesh.

Between this and Rosanne Arquette, today is the day of the “Lol, white women 🤷🏾‍♀️” posts.

    • Trillian says:

Simple: Before I get a bit of a tan, I have to put on sunscreen the second the sun comes out or end up looking like a lobster. When I’ve got a bit of a tan by midsummer, the skin doesn’t sunburn that easily anymore.

    • Flying fish says:

      I don’t get it…

    • PlainJane says:

Sooooo, this could be the elephant in the room…

I have always sensed cultural appropriation in tanning. It was confirmed (or at least discussed) when I took a Black Literature class in college. Granted, I am an old lady. I remember the 80’s when all the straight haired people got big perms, so their hair could be super curly. And people got “laid out” in the sun w/o sunscreen to get dark.

I am more about loving the skin you were born with and seeing beauty in all skin tones.

      • Beach Dreams says:

It’s an interesting theory. White girls at my high school tanned a lot, but that was when Paris Hilton and Laguna Beach (Lauren Conrad especially) were popular and they wanted to emulate that look. I think the cultural appropriation tanning is much more blatant these days though, looking at the Kardashians and Ariana Grande. There’s also been lot of white women on social media doing everything they can to look racially ambiguous.

      • A says:

But then what about white people with naturally curly hair or olive skin? Are they appropriating their own looks? I think you’re reading too much into it. It’s not that deep. It’s just about “wealth” (vacations and free time in the garden – nobody’s itching for a farmers tan, they want that all over color that comes from a leisurly day outside) and “health” (that brisk avoir bonne mine of a tan).

      • BayTampaBay says:

Malignant Melanoma runs in my family. Have not laid out in the sun in 30 years!

        I am a Casper!

      • pomme de chine says:

@A – exactly. I guess my olive skin and Jew-fro are appropriating someone. I hope my ancestors know how racist they were for… existing.

      • Pansy says:

Yeah or you tan easily and like being outdoors. My whole life I’ve been asked “where are you from?” because of my darker skin and curly dark hair (I’m Caucasian with European ancestry), but I wear 50 SPF, don’t lay out, and am just existing—not appropriating anything.
Sometimes stuff just is. Without pretext. Without an elephant in the room.

      • himmiefan says:

I don’t think tanning is cultural appropriation any more than black women straightening their hair. Both are fine. It’s not trying to take on another culture, but just doing what you think makes you look better.

    • MariEmme says:

I had a friend in high school who commented once on white people’s obsession with getting a tan, “Y’all think being white is so great and then try to get as dark as me.” Always struck me as funny yet insightful.

    • SKF says:

Well, if you have a certain skin tone and you go outside a lot in sunny weather, you tend to tan. I wear 50+ sunscreen and a lot of hats but I also do a lot of hiking, walking, running, and swimming at the beach, and I tan. Typically my arms and legs are pretty tanned (winter) to very tanned (summer) but the rest of me is pale. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I live in Sydney so, even though it’s the middle of winter, we have just had a week of 20-22 degrees Celsius weather and I’ve been exercising in shorts and t-shirts. I will say that my skin is a light olive and looks a bit sallow when pale but golden when tanned. My face looks better tanned as it covers up the dark rings I tend to get under my eyes (my 6 year old niece has them too) and make me look better. However, I very rarely get a tan on my face due to my obsessive hat wearing. Mostly only on holidays from reflected light. And I don’t do fake tan. So, there you go, mostly I’m just a tanned leg and arm person!

    • Market street minifig says:

Every once in a while I’ll call myself as “grey” because I once overheard my German friend describe me as “light black.” Anyway, The obsession with tanning never really registered until I had a child with albinism. A first in our family and immediate community. We’ve had to work hard to get her to love her unmelanated skin. She still gets a bit wistful at this time of the year, when even the blond and redhead in her group of friends get more colour than her.

      • PlainJane says:

@Market street minfig – one of my really good friends has albinism. It’s something she struggled with all her life. This is such an interesting conundrum in a community where light skin can be valued, until it gets too light! I am glad to hear you are working to have your daughter love her unmelanated skin! My friend is gorgeous, but obvs it took her some time to believe it.

      • Market street minifig says:

Thank you, @Plain Jane! Glad to hear your friend has come to embrace her color. My daughter is still at an age where fitting in is more important than standing out, so it is a huge relief that she’s coming around to seeing that she is just as gorgeous as her coffee-colored sibling. But certainly, being a black family, having a child with albinism has added a whole new dimension to the politics of skin color for us!

    • Joanna says:

It’s really stupid Imo. I’m more likely to freckle than tan. I get so tired of people saying, oh you’re so white! Well, I AM white! I just don’t want to go to tanning beds or roast on the beach. I live in Florida and the women are so tan! I wish I had a natural olive skin tone so I could tan easily. But as it is, I don’t care enough to try to be tan. I’ve tried spray tans but they just don’t look natural to me and cost so much!

      • BayTampaBay says:

I live in Florida too and many of these “tan” women look like walking rotting pieces of leather when they hit 55 due to sun damage to their skin!

  5. Diana says:

The more casual she dresses the better she looks!!!!

    • Xo says:

Yep. More comfortable in her own skin & better. I like Sporty Kate.

Also, that ring is a duplicate, right? Because, Lord, i’d be stressed beyond belief wearing that thing around.

  6. Kittycat says:

Poor William. He really was good looking.

  7. Enn says:

She does sporty looks so well, and girlfriend’s calves!

    Bear Grylls could get it.

  8. Nahema says:

Kate looks so comfortable here and as usual William doesn’t.

    • PrincessK says:

Yes, and she likes showing off her legs…..imagine the uproar if Meghan was the only woman wearing shorts. Kate is very conscious that the main objective is to get herself on the front pages of the newspapers of the following day. The kids are there to ensure it happens because these days pictures of Kate and William alone are just not enough.

  9. Abby says:

    ::clutches pearls at the shorts::

She looks in her element and completely comfortable here.

  10. Sunnee says:

THIs whole boat racing against each other is a page out of the playbook of Princess Mary and Prince Frederik of Denmark. Have they no original thoughts in their head?

    • Megan says:

Kate has been the patron for the 1851 Trust for five years, This is not their first sailing race.

      • Molly says:

Yes, and rich/royal people have been racing boats for sport for centuries. It’s not a new concept.

    • MaryContrary says:

Didn’t Kate work on a boat for a while during her gap year? I don’t think this is a new hobby for her.

      • Becks1 says:

I’m not sure about that, but she was going to take part in a race – I want to say dragonboats? while she and William were dating and she was advised against it due to security concerns. (I’m not fluent in anything boating or nautical related, so apologies if I’ve messed up terms, lol.)

So she’s definitely had a long-standing interest in sailing/boating. This is the ….. third? time she and William have gone head to head like this (Canada tour in 2011, Australia tour in 2014, and this.) So its nothing new for them.

    • leena says:

@ Sunnee -The Royals have been attending this regatta since 1820, I don’t think the Denmarks pre-date that.

      • BayTampaBay says:

Edward VII is the one really who made regattas a spectator sport for aristocracy and a “must be there” event on the aristocratic social season calendar.

      • leena says:

But, but – “The festival originates from the Prince Regent’s interest in yachting which continued after he became George IV in 1820. The first race started at 09:30 on Thursday 10 August 1826 with the prize of a “Gold Cup of the value of £100″ and was held under the flag of the Royal Yacht Club, which later became the Royal Yacht Squadron. Another race was held the next day for prize money only (£30 for first place, £20 for second).”

        From Wiki

      • Sunnee says:

I was not referring to yachting, but rather them racing I. Teams against each other, I.e. husband /wife competition

  11. Lene Malan says:

Their kids will have stunning legs!

  12. Becks1 says:

She does look cute. Sporty looks like this are definitely when she looks the best and most comfortable, but don’t most of us feel more comfortable in sporty looks? Its why athleisure is a thing, lol.

The skies look really gray and cloudy even today so it seems like moving it a day was a smart call.

    • Molly says:

Many regular people feel more comfortable in sporty clothes, but people like William clearly do not.

    • Spicecake38 says:

Please let athleisure stay in,because you can dress it up(casually)and get use of the clothes for workouts too.Win Win!!!

    • minx says:

I’m at an age where I have to be comfortable, period. I’m done wearing clothes, shoes, underwear that don’t feel good, enough!

  13. RoyalBlue says:

All in a day’s work. The Doolittles are busy today.

    • My3cents says:

I am genuinely shocked they disrupted their summer holidays to do an event. Color me keen!

  14. nab says:

THE BANDAID! She so frequently has cuts. I understand why she wears the bandaid, but still it’s odd.

    • Deb says:

Maybe she’s got dry skin – more prone to cuts…

    • Mego says:

There’s a theory on the internet about why she always has “plasters” on her fingers by a doctor.

      • Maria says:

        What is said theory?

      • pomme de chine says:

Maria, it’ll be a bunch of people who don’t know what they’re on about making claims of drug addictions and insulin injections and other nutty conspiracy theories.

      • Maria says:

LOL. Yes, when doing drugs or taking insulin it’s always best to inject in utterly random places on the knuckle and palm!
        People are so silly.
I’ve never gotten the idea that Kate is super preoccupied with her hands. Even at the height of the engagement frenzy she kept to very short natural pale pink nails, I’m not sure she even bothers with polish anymore. I’m sure she just has nicks and cuts.

      • BeanieBean says:

It’s all that chutney making. I’m sure there’s knife work involved.

      • (TheOG)@Jan90067 says:

Oh FFS, she gardens and says she cooks with her kids. Anyone using sharp implements can and will cut themselves.

      • Megan says:

Not to mention she weight trains and plays tennis. She may get a lot of blisters. I have a whopper on my palm right now from too much dead lifting.

      • Becks1 says:

I cut myself all the time lol. Paper cuts, while cooking, etc. It’s NBD to me (that she often has a bandaid.)

      • Hyacinth Bucket says:

        Sure, a “doctor.”

And why is plasters in quotation marks. Is this “doctor” implying they are not plasters? What on earth are they supposed to be, if not plasters?

      • pomme de chine says:

I think we all can guess what the people throwing around nutty theories about bandaids on her fingers have in common.

      • BeachToronto says:

My guess is she has eczema and covers it with bandages.

      • RoyalBlue says:

Is the bandage always in the same location? Could be a wart?

  15. MellyMel says:

She looks great and comfortable, which she normally does during more sporty events. She has great legs as well!

  16. Becks1 says:

Also, I saw William’s legs – which are in pretty good shape – and immediately thought of him doing Zumba with the moms at the gym after school drop off LOL. Whoever made that comment was brilliant.

  17. Lexa says:

Apparently George and Charlotte are there, too! I’ve only seen the photos of George with Mike Middleton, including a super cute one of him in a hat that shows he’s lost his front teeth.

Kate’s arrival outfit was not a good look (though I love the colors of her top), but she always looks best in sporty gear.

    • hunter says:

      That top was terrible.

    • Becks1 says:

I didn’t love her arrival look either, but at least the top was a little different for her? Richard Palmer made a comment about how she showed up with a new hairstyle and I was like…..really? I don’t see it. It just seems like she didn’t get a blow out, which makes sense considering the event.

    • SIPNBUBBLY says:

That arrival outfit made me cringe. Looks like one of Charlotte’s tops. 🥴

    • Nic919 says:

The frills and peplum were way too much in that top. Without that nonsense the top would have been fine.

    • Enn says:

She should have done a nice fitted t or slim lightweight sweater instead of that striped/cropped/ruffled thing. Clean lines, Kate. Embrace them!

    • Scal says:

The pics of George I that little sailor hat are freaking adorable!!!!!

      • chunkyla says:

I saw one picture of Charlotte smiling and my god she looks *just* like William when he was that age!

      • (TheOG)@Jan90067 says:

OMG I just found the pic! That is too sweet! No front teeth in a captain’s hat that huge lolol. Whatever you say about the Cams, they do make adorable kids!

    • Skyblue says:

The entire ensemble she arrived in was horrible, especially the top. Good grief! It astounds me that someone as trim and fit as she is always shows up in kooky clothes. I was thinking how fabulous she would look in a pair of real jeans.

      • Vava says:

Yeah, the arrival outfit was bad. Theme dressing once again. Enough with the peplums, Kate.

The shorts are tragic too. Poorly tailored and she looks frumpy. I like the length and the color but that’s it.

    • PrincessK says:

Yes, l predicted that the Cambridge’s would be using their kids more and more in the popularity battle with the Sussexes. There is a picture on the newspaper front pages of Charlotte sticking her tongue out, l wonder what the DM brigade will say when the inevitable picture of Archie sticking tongue out appears.

      • Nic919 says:

They will say he is a brat and then conveniently forget about all the other royal kids having done it before. The treatment the press is giving to Meghan will also be applied to Archie and any other kids they have because the UK press remains racist and refuses to change. Only boycotts will force them to change.

      • PrincessK says:

I have seen pictures from other angles. Kate, her mother and Kate’s private secretary Catherine Quinn were all furiously working overtime to get Charlotte to wave for a photo opportunity, obviously to get it in on the newspaper front pages, but it spectacularly backfired with Charlotte refusing to cooperate and deciding to stick her tongue out instead. Kate then tries to laugh it off.

Interestingly there is a bit of a debate on DM as to whether the adults should have laughed it off and whether it was bad behaviour, especially as she had been asked to wave.

      • knowitall says:

@PrincessK I saw that clip too and it was really odd the way they were pressuring Charlotte to wave. Carol looked uncomfortable. So sad the way Carol pressured Kate to marry William and now Kate is just a robot royal. I wonder what if she regrets it.

  18. Ina says:

I’m not a Kate fan but I must say she looks terrific, relaxed, and very much at ease in these pictures.

  19. Molly says:

Maybe it’s the unflattering cut and length of the shorts, but this is the healthiest she’s looked in awhile. Wimbledon wasn’t that long ago where I thought she looked uncomfortably slim. Summer holiday seems to agree with her.

    • Becks1 says:

I thought the same, and I think its partially because the polo shirt isn’t form fitting and neither are the shorts. But her legs really healthy – not just in shape, but healthy.

      • Erinn says:

I was surprised by how great her legs look tbh. Her arms don’t look crazy tiny, either. She looks genuinely good.

    • Beach Dreams says:

Yup, it’s the clothing; cut of the shorts plus the loose shirt and the life jacket. Even at Wimbledon, the dress she wore to the men’s final somewhat disguised her weight because of the cut and flow.

    • Green Desert says:

I know she’s quite thin but I’ve always gotten the sense that she’s also in good shape. Athletic. I think she comes by her frame somewhat naturally. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure she very much watches what she eats. But I also see her as someone who could lift something heavy and run a few miles easily.

  20. Citresse says:

Did Kate get hair extensions???? It looks suddenly longer.
I think Kate’s hair looked best when on tour of Poland and Germany 2017. It was shorter, darker and the center part suited her.

    • LolaB says:

No, I think it’s just one of those ponytail weave things. I’ve got one. My hair’s not at a length for a good-looking pony. 😭

    • Hadda Nav says:

You can’t do a ponytail with a hat like that with standard extensions.

  21. Digital Unicorn says:

She has great legs. However both she and William look like the awkward middle aged couple they are, esp William in his ‘shorts’ and the somewhat stiff way they are standing.

  22. HyacinthBucket says:

She wear that ring when sailing? Does she have a contract that says she may never be seen without it. It is utterly deplatziert.

    • Becks1 says:

I assume its a fake. I cant believe she would wear the real thing sailing.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Its the real deal – she even wore it at a baking event where she was handling food. I remember thinking I hope those diamonds are super secured.

      • Jan says:

She wears a replica out in public when doing “hands-on” engagements.

      • pomme de chine says:

It’s a replica. DU, I’m not sure why you feel comfortable saying it’s not – for plenty of reasons including insurance, no one would ever go on the record to say that there isn’t a replica.

      • PrincessK says:

It must be a replica. Far too risky to wear the original for such an activity. But does she not ever wear her wedding ring?

      • Nic919 says:

Fake or not it is kind of dumb to be handling rope that can move at a fast speed while wearing rings and other jewelry which could get caught. She has obviously never done any real safety training for sailing because they would not be permitting rings like that which could get caught and potentially cut off a finger.

  23. Mox says:

Not to be that girl, but Meghan would be criticized for wearing shorts.

    • Beli says:

And for hosting an event with a load of celebrities.
And for wearing her ring out on the water.
And for bringing her child along.
      Etc etc

    • himmiefan says:

Oh yes, the Daily Mail would be having a fit of the vapors for her “breaking protocol.”

    • Wigletwatcher says:

You said what so many were thinking.
Kate just got praised for light, fun, elitist sort of “work” and showing skin. Had this been Meghan she’d be torn to shreds.

    • PrincessK says:

Thank you Thank you Thank you !

It’s double standards all the way…..but l have noticed more people coming on DM to point this out. I am often a voice in the wilderness when my comments do get accepted over there.

      • BayTampaBay says:

@PrincessK, I have noticed the same thing too with the Daily Fail. There are more comments pro Sussex or discussing the double standard. I do not know if there are more pro Sussex posters of if the Daily Fail is just not deleting as many comments.

  24. Toot says:

Meghan got crap about her diversity on Vogue cover and how Elitist Vogue is, but I wonder if we’ll hear a peep about this event at all. I mean can’t get more elite than yacht racing, and there’s no diversity here.

    • chunkyla says:

      .

    • Megan says:

The lack of diversity is pretty stunning. They have the worst staff. Since this race is raising money for charities and is free to the public, they will get a pass.

      • chunkyla says:

The same thing can be said about the various Polo charity matches the Princes’ participate in. I didn’t see one black person participating in that Polo match in that Harry played in Rome back in May and not a word was said about it.

      • Toot says:

@ chunkyla Correct, but why is it an issue when there is diversity.

      • Lexa says:

I’m cutting them a *tiny* bit of slack on the lack of diversity in this particular event, only because (I believe?) these are the different charities’ existing ambassadors and it likely came down to who was willing and available to do the event.

      • BayTampaBay says:

@chunkyla, I know nothing about charity polo in the UK but charity polo in Florida is not cheap. I have been to one charity polo event in Florida and the cheapest ticket was $100.00. There was limited diversity at this event for Florida which is a fairly diverse place to begin with. This event was about nothing but raising money for the charity.

      • bonobochick says:

Weren’t there at least Latinx folks at the polo events, even if there aren’t any Black folks? Black faces aren’t the only way for something to be diverse.

      • BayTampaBay says:

@bono, There were people of different races present at this polo event. Florida as whole is a very racial diverse place across all economic groups, more so than most of the USA places I have visited or lived in. However, the charity polo event I went to was about 75% Caucasian from what I could tell.

I do not have the ability to look a person and determine their racial makeup 100% of the time. I have meet people from South American that look more Scandinavian than people I know from Denmark.

  25. Guest says:

Easy, and predictable event. So I guess good for them. The bar is set so low for them. And their cute kids are there.

  26. LOretta says:

That first pic, 50 shades of white!

  27. Seraphina says:

She looks great. Appropriate and having fun. Nicely done.

  28. Mego says:

She looks much better in shorts than jeggings.

  29. Wadsworth the Butler says:

It’s strange to think that William is now older than Diana was when she died. What is his legacy at 37, other than his children? So many members of his immediate family have redefined their roles rather than being defined by them: The Queen, Charles, Diana, Philip, the Queen Mother…even Harry is beginning to redefine his public role with a sense of purpose that Margaret and Andrew never found. But William and Kate seem defined by their roles. Which is sad, since they will never have more freedom to push boundaries than they do now, and they haven’t made use of it.

    • RoyalBlue says:

died Young with a big legacy:
      Jesus
      Mozart
      Chris Farley
      Emily Bronte
      Jimi Hendrix
      Tupac
      Buddy Holly
      Terry Fox
      Anne Frank
      Bob Marley

At the end of the day any one of those will have a more lasting legacy than William ever will given the opportunities he has had to do so and never grasped.

      • Wadsworth the Butler says:

No one is expecting him to compose a symphony or found a world religion. His family members aren’t remarkably gifted or talented (or even very bright, in most cases) but most of them brought a little bit of imagination to their roles.

      • Lady D says:

Respectfully requesting Robin Williams name on that list.

      • RoyalBlue says:

Now he is a William worth remembering Lady D.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Some people are not interested in pushing boundaries. If you are not interested in pushing boundaries; FINE! However, you then need to pick up a heavy load of Bread-and-Butter work per HM The Queen Mother, HRH The Princess Royal and TRH The Earl & Countess of Wessex.

Nothing wrong with appearances to help praise money for Scouting, the local PTA or a village charity fete for EACH but you need to get on it.

      • Wadsworth the Butler says:

Even the emphasis on “bread and butter” work was boundary-breaking at one time. Walkabouts, “The Royal Family,” appearing on magazine covers, giving interviews, doing a promo sketch with James Bond…all firsts. Institutions either constantly evolve, or they become irrelevant. The moment the Monarchy becomes completely irrelevant to most people is the day it ends. No one understands that better than his grandmother.

And I would further argue that if Anne does 500 events that don’t benefit the organizations in any tangible way, they’re almost completely irrelevant. The charities that the Sussexes posted on their Instagram account got instantaneous global promotion that will help them grow their donor base. Which do you think a charity would prefer: that, or a 15 min visit from Anne that gets zero coverage.

      • Wadsworth the Butler says:

        double post

      • BayTampaBay says:

@Wadsworth, I think I did not clearly state what I was trying to say.

I have no idea how much money Princess Anne raises for charity. What I do know is that she does a whole lot of bread & butter work such as showing up at the junior high school science fair and giving out the awards to the winners. The winners of the awards get their picture taken with the Princess and this photo is cherished forever. I have a friend who has too such photos; one her mother & the Queen Mother and the second is her great-grandfather and the Queen Mother.

I am sure charities as a whole prefer the Sussex way but not all Royal work is about raising money. A good deal of Royal work is just public service. I say this based on the engagement numbers Charles & Camilla, Anne and Edward & Sophie throw up on the leader board each year. Sometimes all that is needed and all that is wanted is for any HRH to show up at the High School graduation and present the award for 12 years of perfect attendance at school. I think people need to be thanked, deserved to be thank or recognized for getting up every morning, trying their best to do their best at what they are supposed to be doing. The Queen Mother understood this better than anyone and she also knew how positive (PR wise) it could make the Royal Family look.

IF Bill & Cathy Cambridge do not want to use their presence and platform to push boundaries then so be it but they need to get busy doing a much greater load of other generic Royal work or they have no reason to exist until William ascends the throne. Prince Charles understands this better than anyone and he also knows how positive (PR wise) it can make the Royal Family look. Charles has pushed many boundaries in his career as Prince of Wales but he has also done a metric-fuck-tonne of public service throughout the UK. Everyone interested in the BRF really needs to Watch the PBS documentary” Charles at 70″ to get an insightful eyeful of a HRH that really gets it.

      • Vv says:

William is actually doing a good job with male mental health, now in partnership with the FA too, and that has a lot of potential.
Same for Kate’s Early Years program, whatever some people may think. Also,a lot of charities that have been associated with them have received a financial help over the years. It’s also what is happening with this fundraiser. It’s not something that matters only when some particular members of the family are involved.
The point is that mental health is a topic very big in scale, and it needs to be handled in a way that shows that a singular initiative is having impact.
When Kate launches a partnerships with the Anne Freud Centre,Place2Be and Young Minds to finance a program for the primary school teachers,we can’t see any tangible results after a few weeks.
Personally speaking,I think it’s a great project, but I also think they have done a very confusing job illustrating its development.
They should interview teachers, staff who are benefiting from their advices and lessons plans, for example.
A good opportunity to do some video interviews was the conference attended by Kate.
It’s fine raising awareness as Harry,W&K, have done with Heads Together, but it’s not enough.
I think their staff is already doing a better job in terms of communications,so I’m curious to see what they do with the family-oriented initiatives (I guess they involve Kate’s group) announced with the split.
As far as the bread and butter royal work is concerned, they are all expected to do it. Not only William and Kate.

      • BayTampaBay says:

@Vv, I am glad to hear Bill and Cathy are increasing their work load. I hope they (along with all other Royals) get proper recognition for all good work that they do.

      • Nic919 says:

Kate has not visited her patronages enough to show that any tangible work was done. Ignoring the broken Britain thing, she has supposedly been involved with some patronages since 2012. When are we going to see any tangible results? There is constant spin whereas Meghan has in her short time as a royal produced two tangible projects with results. Kate could easily do the same with some of her patronages but does not make the effort. There is far more PR about what she plans to do than what she has actually done. This has been going on since 2011. Until there is solid evidence of things accomplished and not just video messages and letters written by Catherine Quinn, I won’t buy that she has changed at all.

      • Wadsworth the Butler says:

I agree that the “bread and butter” visits have value, but I also think that “more” doesn’t necessarily equal “more valuable,” especially when there’s so much stat-padding involved. For example, if Edward does 5 events in one week but only spends 20 minutes at each and speaks to one or two people, and Sophie does one visit that lasts an hour and manages to speak to 15 people, the stats may suggest that Edward worked 5x harder than Sophie in that week, but it’s misleading.

But you’re going to opt for low volume, you have to go for high impact, and that’s where William and Kate come up short. They launch a lot of projects, but it’s not clear what tangible benefit they produce. If lots of people are being helped by their projects, that’s not being effectively communicated to the public.

    • RoyalBlue says:

I agree with you wad. I think they are becoming irrelevant. I also feel they are not interested in working or leaving a legacy.

And BTB I also think it’s good they are doing their jobs and that’s the only thing I really have to add

  30. Anne says:

And of course no Ben Ainslie. Such a shame. They are REALLY making sure she seen/pictured with him after their last event. It’s so painfully obvious.

    • pomme de chine says:

They’re making sure she is seen with him so… he isn’t there? May need to rework this conspiracy theory, Anne.

    • leena says:

@ Anne What is painfully obvious?

    • Anne says:

OMG, there is no conspiracy, it was a typing mistake. What I meant is that they are making sure she is NOT around him, ever since their last race and that is really obvious. I can see how this was confusing but there is really no need to be rude @pomme de chine.

  31. Flying fish says:

The shorts are fine but the outfit she showed up in is a bloody mess.

  32. Margareth says:

    LMAO Kate’s boat was disqualified

  33. tw says:

The future queen in shorts!! omg. Just kidding. She looks great.

  34. Nicegirl says:

I’m so jealous of her legs, the picture of health! Hard work probably right? ❤️💕🖖🏽

  35. Rogue says:

Did you see the video of Charlotte sticking her tongue out at spectators? She’s adorable!

@Baytampbay I agree Prince Charles has been a great public servant&has made a tangible difference to peoples lives. His 70th birthday documentary is really good. He was working today and wouldn’t know it if it wasn’t for Clarence House social media. Messy first marriage, questionable friendships& political interference aside- I do think the press have done him a disservice

    • BayTampaBay says:

The work Charles did with Dumfries House & The Dumfries estate/village has impressed me to to the point of no return regarding ALL aspect of Royal work that can be initiated, developed and accomplished by an HRH.

ETA: The man and his work are two different things and IMHO must be judge separately.

    • Vv says:

I agree that the good work done by Charles has been for the most part (if not completely)
overshadowed first by his personal life, and now his sons obviously get all the mediatic attention. I really like how Camilla has approached her role too, after all the ugly media coverage she got for years. I think a lot of people have learned to appreciate her.

Re these photos: Kate always looks the best in sporty mode.
I like how they planned this event, keeping the focus on the charities. It was also a nice event for the their stuff.
It’s certainly better seeing them actively involved in a sport event to raise funds than just seeing a bunch of pics of them attending a gala,a concert.. I think the intention is to make it an annual event.

  36. MangoAngelesque says:

Ever since someone pointed out (in headlines, nonetheless!!) that Kate’s knees look like Casper the Friendly Ghost, she hasn’t worn shorts or anything too knee-revealing without tights. I’m glad she changed that up, she has lovely legs and looks very happy here!

  37. Molly says:

Can someone please teach Kate how to sit when wearing shorts! She and William look like a middle age couple pushing 50.

    • bamaborn says:

Molly…no!!! You’re not suppose to notice that. I thought it was Kate being Kate, nothing new.

      • Guest says:

What? How are we supposed to sit on a boat in shorts then? Shorts are worn for flexible movement. Did you want her to wear a skirt? The shorts aren’t see through, so? Someone said the shorts look “frumpy” on her hahaha. They need to head on over to Twitter where everyone is loving her frumpy legs and shorts! Envy darling, envy.

    • Enn says:

…how do you sit while wearing shorts on a boat?

    • Myra says:

Molly, Lol! Terrible look. Surely she’s aware that she would be photographed. For those of you who don’t know the proper way to sit on a boat….try closing your legs!

  38. coffeeisgood says:

She looks more comfortable and natural when she does sporty looks. Makes me think all the frilly, lacey, and button dresses are just her trying to look the part of how she thinks a future queen should dress.

  39. RoyalBlue says:

So they probably do zero prep work for this project, show up with the kids and lose and it’s a success. Meghan works for months on a magazine, grenfell book and her other projects sponsoring women’s work clothing etc that all have not just financial but social impact, and gets bullied by the RR. I 👀 you.

  40. knowitall says:

ugh tired of the whole Kate being as skinny and tan as humanely possible and her crazy extensions and pounds of makeup. I don’t know why I expect any different, she obviously isn’t going to change. Not a good role model for women, just my opinion.

    • CrystalBall says:

      I heartily agree!

    • Guest says:

Skinny as humanly possible hmmm. I see a muscular, athletic, healthy famous woman loving sports. She’s always playing football or hockey at her engagements. I’d say that’s a good example for young girls who are a bit shy with sport. Many famous women also wear extensions so I don’t know why you’re so against extensions. Her makeup and tan here is also quite a natural look – many people tan at this time of year. And she’s finally letting her natural wavy hair show instead of the straight blowouts she usually sports. Just a different opinion. Lazy at her work engagements? Sure, but Kate is certainly not lazy when it comes to being active, fit, healthy, outdoorsy and also mere hours after she gives birth lol.

      • Myra says:

        Guest: you need glasses

      • Breckenridge says:

Pretty sure Myra needs a diet.

      • Tina says:

What is with all of the ad hominem? I don’t particularly like discussions of famous people’s weight, but they are in the public eye. It is possible to think Kate does not look healthy and be of a healthy weight oneself.

      • Guest says:

Nah, you don’t develop a lean, athletic, muscular body, like Kate’s, if you are unhealthy. She looks very healthy right now. Please tell us how we’re supposed to wear shorts and keep our legs closed during sporting activities?

      • Tina says:

I DGAF whether Kate keeps her legs open or not. I’m just bloody sick of the comments here calling commenters whales etc, for daring to suggest that the pwitty pwitty pwincess might not be perfect.
