Emilia Clarke in a rich, jewel-tone Valentino at the Emmys: gorgeous or blah?

Everyone knew that the Best Drama Emmy would undoubtedly go to Game of Thrones for their final season. Even though the final season was controversial (and stupid), Emmy voters fell in love with the show and it’s fine. I was sad to see that Peter Dinklage was the only actor who won anything for GoT though. Maybe Emilia Clarke wasn’t the best actress at the start of the show, but by the end of it, she broke my heart all the time. Emilia wore this Valentino gown to GoT’s last Emmys. I saw Tom & Lorenzo call this look “boob suspenders” and now I can’t get that out of my head. I honestly don’t mind this dress at all – the color is gorgeous and she’s beautiful in it. The styling made it pop: those David Webb ‘80s-style earrings were absolutely perfect. Her makeup was gorgeous too.

Gwendoline Christie wore this Gucci Jesus look and truly, we live in such bizarre times. Gwendoline has such an amazing and weird sense of style, I thought for sure she would choose some giant avant-garde ball gown or something. But instead we get Gucci’s high-fashion take on Jesus’s peasant robes. I’m also a little bit sad that Gwen didn’t win anything (ever) at the Emmys for her amazing performance as Brienne of Tarth.

This was Kit Harington’s first red carpet appearance since his detox and rehab stay just after Game of Thrones ended this year. He looked good, I thought. He looked healthy and sober. I do think it’s interesting that his wife Rose Leslie didn’t join him though.

The most deserving person in the cast to win was Lena (for any season really) so I’m really sad that one of the best persfomances of TV won a total of 0 Emmys. Can’t believe it.

    • Becks1 says:

Agreed. Even though her storyline in the last season was crap, she was still the best actress on the show overall.

  2. Sara says:

Love all these looks! Gwendoline is so right to have fun on the carpet, and when else could she do Jesus cosplay? Why should Jared Leto have all the fun? Also Emilia looked charming.

  3. Alexandria says:

Gwendoline. It’s ridiculous but I love it!

Not into Emilia’s dress, it seems unbalanced or something. I’m not a prude but the proportions seem off with that big vacancy.

    • Esmom says:

Agree about Emilia’s dress. A little more fabric on top would have balanced it better and would have made her a contender for best look of the night, imo. her hair, makeup and jewelry were stunning.

    • minx says:

When is this look going away…? —I don’t like the deep V and excess boobage on any of these dresses. If you are busty it’s hard to look elegant and if you’re small everyone is seeing your breast bones. Cleavage is fine but all I can think of with this look is double sided tape and potential wardrobe malfunctions. I want to see the woman, not think about her breasts.

    • Snazzy says:

I loved Gwendoline’s look! Yes ok, very middle 100 BC middle eastern, but I love it. Looks amazing … and comfy!

  4. Loretta says:

I was speecheless looking at Emilia Clarke. Simply stunning, she looked like a movie star.

    • Lee says:

I agree, she looked amazing and I think she deserved to win.

      • petee says:

Me to Lee.I think she should have won because she played this character for so long and she was a huge reason this show was the giant it became. Now it’s over and she won’t get the chance again.Long live the Mother Of Dragons.

      • KLO says:

@petee Emilia was the only reason I watched the show for the handful of times, I did.

    • Josephine says:

Oh, I really did not like the top of that dress! The color was nice and she looked so pretty in terms of hair and make-up but I think the top of that dress was unflattering and bizarre. A little more fabric would be so much more elegant. This just looked cheap to me.

    • DiegoInSF says:

She said on Insta and when interviewed on the red carpet that this “lewk” (her word) was inspired by JLo in Hustlers. And JLo replied calling her the Mother of Dragons. I thought that was so cute!

  5. Vicky says:

Emilia Clarke deserved to win IMO, she was the only good thing in the last season and she had absolute raves. BTW she was stunning and I think she will have a great careere after GOT

    • Char says:

Emilia Clarke grew as an actress through the seasons, as Daenerys grew as a character. I hope she finds nice parts now and who knows, maybe some Marvel villaness would be amazing to get her out there again (Thor’s Enchantress would be super).

  6. Charlotte says:

When I saw Emilia Clarke last night I though “this is a movie star”. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her in the Oscar race in the future. Gorgeous and nice woman.

  7. Margareth says:

Yesterday Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke seemed a couple LOL

  8. aiobhan targaryen says:

I actually think that Gwen’s and Emilia’s are two of my favorite looks of the night, along with Zendaya’s and a few others.

Hair and makeup are on point and so are the accessories. Both look phenomonal.!!!

Someone on my twitter timeline said that Kit reminds them of George Costanza and now I cannot get it out of my head. Kit being the buffer younger British version of George, of course. He is both ugly and attractive at the same time. He does look healthy here and the hair cut works for him. I personally predict he and Rose will not make it to their second anniversary. You never see them together anywhere and I bet he still cheats on her. Funny how those pictures of him and one of his women ended up disappearing off the internet. I do hope he keeps up sober living. He may be a fancy fuckboi but I don’t wish that sort of life on anyone.

    • Louisa says:

Rose deserves better, she seems like a sweet woman.

      • aiobhan targaryen says:

Rose is an unemployed Tory who has her own issues. I don’t feel sorry for either of them when it comes to this relationship. I also should amend the word cheating. She knows what he is doing and does not care. It is not cheating if the wife knows about it. It just makes her pathetic for staying with him.

  9. Erinn says:

I really hate that dress. It just looks incomplete. It’s like she’s wrapped an apron around her waist and grabbed some sheer curtains to cover her boobs. I’m really not much of an Emilia fan though, so that’s probably some of it. People who like her a lot will probably think it’s a cute look. I just find her so…. average, I guess. She spent so much time eyebrow acting in everything I’ve seen her in that her brows deserve an award for the amount of work they’ve put in.

    • Bebe says:

That eyebrow comment made me laugh so hard! I thought Emma Watson was the eyebrow actress of our times, but alas. LOL.

    • Naddie says:

Nah, you’re correct about the dress. I’m a fan and your idea is exactly what I got from it.

    • Elisa says:

Ha, I find her average, too. Of course she is beautiful, but at the same time so boring to look at. she doesn’t have it, IMO.

  10. Lisa says:

Emilia looked really good. One of my fave looks from last night.

  11. Lucy says:

Seeing them together made me a bit emotional, I must say. They did the best they could with what they had and worked very hard. As for EC, this was probably the best she’s ever looked. The color was beautiful, the fit was perfect, and the dress wasn’t wearing her. First I saw Emilia (amazing smile, great skin, great hair), then I saw everything else. Brava!!!

  12. Lightpurple says:

Gwen’s earrings were bigger than the Emmy statue.

  13. Louisa says:

I really don’t understand the “she should’ve won” sentiments here. She has always been a one-note actress and overly relies on her eyebrows to do most of her acting. She’s only a bit better than Emma Watson IMO.

With that said, she’s beautiful and she rocked that dress though it always looks like she’s one second away from a wardrobe malfunction.

    • Loretta says:

I disagree. She has raves for the last season (even from critics that weren’t very kind with her in the past) and maybe she was a one-note actress because she was struggling with two brain aneurysms and with depression (she told to The New Yorker that during those seasons she didn’t even realize what was happening and she thought that she would die every day). It’s a miracle that she’ still alive today, healthy and without damage.

      • Louisa says:

I do sympathize with what she went through but it’s not only in GOT that she showed her lack of acting skills. In almost all of her movies she was hardly any better.

I hope she and her fans don’t use her depression and brain aneurysm as the fallback excuse when defending her acting. It’s also hard to say that without coming off like a bitch, but there I said it.

      • Grant says:

Raves? Who raved about her performance last season? I thought it was fine but hardly Emmy worthy. I tend to agree that she’s pretty basic as an actress with far too much reliance on her eyebrows to convey emotion.

      • Korra says:

I would argue that her acting grew overtime. Her acting issues the first few seasons were due to the fact that she was relatively new to the profession and still very inexperienced when she landed the role, though I am sure her health issues didn’t help. Shame this is how her character ended her story because had GOT gone 10+ season GRRM originally wanted, I think Emilia would have shown a lot more growth. Plus, the “Mad Queen” story arc would have been fleshed out better.

      • Barbara says:

        @Grant
Yes, she had raves from Variety ( they almost wrote a love letter to her), The Guardian, Slant and so on. You can do a google research and you will find all her raves.

    • M.A.F. says:

I agree. Her acting was never great. It only got “better” because the writing went down hill since they were no longer pulling from the source material.

  14. Anna says:

I know that Kit and Emilia are good friends, but damn they are gorgeous together!
Also I am sad that Emilia didn’t won because she was great as Daenerys

  15. styla says:

I don’t understand it. Jon Snow is gorgeous… Kit Harrington… vibes like Darlene’s boyfriend on Roseanne. I guess it’s a good testament to his acting ability though.

    • Bella Bella says:

He looks very snear-y in the red-carpet pictures. Half of his mouth is always turned down in a sneer.

  16. Starkiller says:

The only thing I like about Emilia’s is the earrings. Dress is hideous and too long, and as beautiful as she is, I just don’t think that severe slicked-down center parting is flattering on anyone.

Gwendoline looks awesome. I was going to suggest that maybe it would be a more appropriate look for the Met Gala, but the Emmys are such a farce, why take it seriously?

Kit looks like a waiter. I’ve said it before and I’ll saying again, he’s always whingeing about how hard it is to be so sexy, and I have absolutely no idea where he ever got the impression that he is.

    • VirgiliaCoriolanus says:

I honestly get the impression that he must be extremely good looking IRL. Every time I’ve watched a behind the scenes commentary thing with the cast, the first they ANY of them do, when he comes on screen, is talk about how pretty he is. I thought they’d be doing that for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, not him.

Plus I think it had to do with the roles he was getting outside of GoT when he first started out e.g. beefcake, pretty boy roles. He just has the bad form to whine about it publicly.

  17. Jessica says:

The dress is gorgeous… the issue is that Emelia is the epitome of blah. So much of GoT was her looking left, looking far off right, looking behind her, etc. she never really had to act & when she did, she proved that she’s a terrible actress and has no “it” factor.

  18. Kristen says:

I thought Emilia should’ve had Sophie’s dress, and Sophie Emilia’s.

  19. Spikey says:

    I’m dead. OMG!
Gwen. This. Is. The. BEST. Sack. I. Have. Ever. Seen! I love sack dresses, I really do. Angie is my forever style icon. But this, this is just beyond. This is so good!

I’m off to rob a bank so I can afford this Gucci!! Bye!

  20. Mark says:

    Emilia Clarke is stunning.

  21. Lady D says:

The buttons on Gwen’s gown have the same lion head on them that the House of Lannister emblazoned on their clothes, armour, weapons, furniture, books, etc. etc. I think her gown was a nod to them.

  22. Jessica says:

Love Emilia! The color of the dress was wonderful but she definitely needed more boob support. I can’t want to see what projects she puts out after GOT. She has a ton of potential!

  23. MarcelMarcel says:

    I 💖 Gwendoline Christie‘s look.✨

  24. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Emilia’s dress. Hmm. Boob suspenders sound kinda nice. She’s the last GOT actor that should nab an Emmy, but she looks very happy nonetheless. Kit looks really good. Christi is awesome so if she wants to move to Rome and help govern I’m on board.

  25. liriel says:

Honestly, I feel like Peter’s works wasn’t the best of any cast. I feel bad for other actors Emilia included bur more so Lena and Alfie (Theon!). Also so sad the showed went out like this.. The final season like literally ruined the whole show. Sometimes you forget about everything that went wrong but I feel like people really turned on GoT and its legacy will be underwhelming. Which is sad..
    #TEAM DANY!

  26. Nathalie says:

I love Emila. She’s so sweet, humble, kind. A great role model IMO

  27. Lidia says:

    From Lainey:
“I often feel, though, like there’s more pressure on Clarke than any of the other GOT stars. In theory, they’re all equal, but when it came to her line during their weird firing-squad-formation tribute to the show (Veep’s had almost the same staging but worked 90,000 times better), there were additional screams, just for her – she had to wait to say her line, and acknowledged it with a smile and such grace, even though it was basically the Emmy equivalent of frat boy hollering, and I just get frustrated for her.
Everyone else in GOT is part of the ensemble, but somehow audiences see Clarke differently”

I agree with her and she was so humble and shy in that moment.
