Chance the Rapper is absolutely disgusted by vegetables, even carrots and celery

Chance the Rapper’s Carpool Karaoke aired last week and it was super cute and fun to watch, like most of those. Chance is getting the most headlines for a segment in which James Corden gave him vegetables to eat while Chance was blindfolded. He got utterly disgusted and I just felt so bad for him! The video above is queued up to that part, although it’s well worth watching from the beginning. I’ve transcribed some of what they say in case you can’t listen at work. The only vegetable Chance eats is lettuce on his burgers!

I read the only greens you eat is lettuce on a burger
That’s so true. I definitely do not eat vegetables.

I’ve got some vegetables in the back and this blindfold
I’m terrified. It does smell like vegetables in here.

[Hands him carrot]
It feels like plastic. I honestly don’t eat vegetables. Is this a carrot. [Takes bite, makes face] Dear God, it’s so f’ing gross.

What do you think that is?
Celery? [takes bite] F’k this. I can still taste the celery.

[Hands him cucumber]
Is this a d-ck? [Takes off blindfold] Seeing them in real life makes me not want to eat them at all.

[From Carpool Karaoke]

My son doesn’t like salad and generally won’t eat it but he will eat cut up vegetables including peppers, carrots, celery and cucumber and so I make that for him. He also likes broccoli, which is genetic in none of us have the gene which makes broccoli taste bitter. This reminds me so much of Anderson Cooper trying spinach for the first time on his show. He got totally disgusted by it. I found that fascinating because you usually see kids doing that, not adults. This makes me wonder if super picky non-vegetable eaters like Chance and Anderson Cooper have a combination of genes that make vegetables taste horrible to them. The articles about it seem to center around those same genes that make cruciferous vegetables taste bitter. There are people who are super tasters and have it so much worse. I hope they’re taking vitamins and fiber and eating the vegetables that they find palatable. Does Chance eat cooked vegetables, like in a stir fry? I have so many questions after watching this.

I have a coworker who’s husband has a major vegetable phobia. He is deathly afraid of them. I don’t know how people like this live without serious health issues.

  2. Lucy says:

I love Chance! He’s so funny and talented, and seems kind. He should consider introducing veggies in his diet somehow, though.

I eat vegetables but I am totally with him on these. I don’t like carrots but as an adult see the benefits so will tolerate cooked carrots in soups and stuff but raw carrots are gross. I absolutely loathe celery though and cannot have it raw, cooked, juiced etc. I can sense the tiniest hint of it in food and even the mere whiff of it turns my stomach. I hate celery.

  4. Goldie says:

I love veggies but I’m finding it hard to digest raw veggies these days. I can pretty much only eat raw lettuce and tomato (which I know is a fruit). Otherwise, my vegetables need to be cooked. I used to love eating raw carrots and celery with dip or peanut butter, but I can’t eat them anymore.

Anyway, I hope Chance is at least eating a variety of fruits to get his vitamins.

This is my mom. She will not eat veggie cooked or raw or a stir fry. I didn’t grow up on eating veggies bc they disgusted her so much, but I love them! To this day at 60 she will not eat them. People like what they like

I will eat almost any vegetable that has been tossed in olive oil, salt, and pepper and roasted in the oven – does that count?? This is a fun video though, love Chance’s lyricism.

I think most vegetables are delicious, they just have to be prepared the right way. I wonder how many people think “they don’t like vegetables”, when really it was just because they were given a poorly prepared serving when they were young and it stuck in their brain.

    • Tiffany says:

My mother’s brussels sprouts come to mind. Good Lord she was not a good cook.

    • Cate says:

I agree! I’m sure there are people who have genuine reasons for not eating vegetables, but for most I suspect a lot of it comes down to preparation. I also disliked Brussels sprouts growing up–because my parents always served them steamed. But when I started dating my husband, he made these amazing roasted Brussels sprouts and I was HOOKED. I’ve since discovered that there are many other delicious ways to make them as well. Likewise, I used to hate ratatouille, but I’ve since realized it was mostly my dad’s preparation method.

I have a young son and if he doesn’t like a vegetable at first I’ll try preparing it differently the next time. He’s caught on and now if I give him something and he doesn’t like it, he’ll ask me “make it a different way so that it is yummy for me”.

    • Adrianna says:

They can be delicious. I roast them after cubing them and tossing them in a tasty sauce of balsamic vineger, honey, chicken oxo powder and dijon mustard. Beets, sweet potato, carrots, potatoes, etc.

  8. Tiffany says:

My raw veggies are always with a dip of some kind like hummus or spinach-artichoke. Not exactly the most healthy but….at least it is a upgrade of having a side of hot wings with my carrots and celery. 🙂

  9. just a small town girl says:

I don’t eat most veggies, I just can’t get it down. For me it’s a texture issue, though. I can do some of them raw (carrots!) and salads as long as they’re super fresh and crisp. But the texture of broccoli, anything that’s cooked and sort of mushy…nope.

  10. Haapa says:

The bulk of my diet every day is just…. raw vegetables. And I’m not vegetarian or strict with my diet at all!! People comment and ask if I’m on a diet and say how “good” I am for eating vegetables, but I just like them. It’s what tastes good to me and I enjoy eating.

  11. Kathy says:

He could have Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (although, if he did, I don’t think he’d even be able to bite the vegetables, but people’s reactions vary.) It’s a newer diagnosis for people who used to just be considered super-picky eaters. One of the big signs is writing off an entire food group, with vegetables being the most common.

My sister and I have both recently been diagnosed. She can’t put a vegetable in her mouth without gagging, and I can’t eat meat. It’s more than just not liking it. My mother says I was already refusing to eat meat when I was in a highchair. As a child, I would take any punishment, grounding, losing phone privileges, ANYTHING rather than eat the meat I was served at dinner. I would hide it in my hand then “go to the bathroom” and flush it. When I was 9, I learned the word “vegetarian” and declared myself one. After talking to my doctor, my parents finally gave in. Haven’t touched meat in three decades. It absolutely repulses me.

    • Goldie says:

Oh wow, I had the same issue. I stopped eating meat when I was 1.5, long before I knew what a vegetarian was. I also wouldn’t eat eggs. I just couldn’t stand them.I kept this up for decades, until recently when I developed several food intolerances. I decided that I needed to diversify my diet a bit more to make up for what I was eliminating. So, I added eggs and fish. I actually do genuinely like eggs now, where as, fish, I can take or leave. Red meat and poultry still has no appeal.

  12. Ann says:

This makes me want veggies. I love celery and carrots! They are one of my favorite healthy snacks. Lol at poor Chance! He tried but I get it, vegetables aren’t for everyone. My dad is like that too.

  13. What. . .now? says:

My husband has a friend like that — and to this day he has the worst health problems. Surgeries, emergency hospital trips — he looks 20 years older than my hubs and looks frail. He’s had stomach issues, digestive issues, brain issues — People eat your veggies if you can. Hold your nose and just do it if you have no medical issues, because as you get older…a lifetime of non-veggie, extremely limited nutrients can have horrible effects on your body. If he lives to be 60, it will be a miracle.

  14. Joanna says:

That picture of his wife and his daughter is so precious! 🤗 I couldn’t tell you any of his songs but I do know he donated millions to the school system where he lived as a child. That makes him ok in my book.
