Is anyone out there still questioning the Sparkle-Bat? Earlier this year, Robert Pattinson was announced as the new, millennial Batman in yet another reboot of the franchise. Matt Reeves is directing it and trying to bring some “Batman: Master Detective” vibes to this version. Reportedly, the emphasis will be about crime and Batman/Bruce Wayne investigating that those crimes committed by… some villain who will probably be played by Jonah Hill. But we needed a “third heat.” And that third heat is… Zoe Kravitz. She was just cast as Catwoman in The Batman.
“Big Little Lies” star Zoe Kravitz has been tapped to play Catwoman, the antiheroine and sometime love interest of the Caped Crusader, in Matt Reeves’ upcoming “The Batman.” Kravitz will star opposite Robert Pattinson as Batman. Pre-production on the Warner Bros.-DC Comics pic is expected to start this summer. No official start date has been set, although insiders tell Variety that filming could start in late 2019 or early 2020. “The Batman” is scheduled to hit theaters June 25, 2021.
Reeves, the filmmaker behind the last two “Planet of the Apes” sequels, took over “Batman” directing duties from Ben Affleck in January 2017. Affleck departed his role as Batman following “Justice League,” allowing Reeves to pick his own Bruce Wayne. Reeves’ “Planet of the Apes” collaborator Dylan Clark will produce.
I… like this. A lot. Honestly, Zoe’s name has been floating around for a month or two, there was just a question about whether The Batman would feature Catwoman or not. Zoe is really one of only a handful of younger actresses I would trust with Catwoman. Oh, and I liked Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman too, #NeverForget. I actually thought Anne was the best part of The Dark Knight Rises. Catwoman is usually the best part of any Batman movie. It’s almost like – hear me out – the world of Gotham is so toxic and male-dominated that any kind of feminine, feline energy automatically becomes the best and most interesting part. And trust that Zoe is more than capable of purring and bringing that Big Kitty Energy.

For me, Michelle Pfeifer is the iconic film Catwoman. I have that scene where she saves the girl in the alley, and then says “always waiting for some Batman to come and save you”. And I love every single thing about that scene. It is one of the best film scenes of all time in my book.
But…I’ll see this. I think Zoe will be fine. I don’t know if she’ll be great. She probably will be the best thing about it though! You’re right about that.
I love Zoe, but I’m with you… Michelle Pfeifer was perfect. She and Michael Keaton were both so crazy and broken… the way I imagine those characters, in those situations, would be.

She turned in a pretty respectable performance in the second season of Big Little Lies. She, and her character, were mostly overshadowed in the first season but she really brought it in the second season, which was no easy fete given the A-list talent she was surrounded with. I’m definitely intrigued by her casting of Catwoman, I think she can pull it off.

She is dull as an actress. Plus, she is petite. I dont care for this at all. Christian Bale was Batman, and all 3 of those films have held up well. Surely, they could have come up with someone better.
She isn’t any duller than Pattison was in the aftermath of Twilight, unlike him she hasn’t been given a ton of opportunities to develop as an actress. Am sure she we will be fine if she’s given the opportunities of a mediocre but pretty white male…

Seriously? She has just as many credits as Pattinson, so how has she not been “given” any opportunities? Also, how was he “given” opportunities after Twilight? In some ways, he was radioactive due to overexposure. Most of his opportunities were due to his own legwork, approaching directors he admired and talking about future projects, mostly obscure art house ones.
I like the casting for both of them, and people who think they’re dull have not seen their recent work.

Yeah this is rather uninspired casting. She’s the go to black actress, the “right shade”. I was hoping they would go with an unknown. Or at least someone who can act.

Yeah she meets the right shade and right facial feature required of “Black” American actresses in these blockbusters with acting skills way low. White features dipped into tan sauce. See Spider-Man, X-Men, Thor 3, other Marvel films. The Brown paper bag and straight pencil tests are in full practice.
Imagine if White actresses in mainstream movies were only represented by those with “exotic” features or skin color. Excluding all with UK, Sweden, Norwegian or Russian ancestry. Only half White women or those without caucasian feature please apply. No blondes, pale skin, blue or green eyes; must be at least as dark as a brown paper bag.

Agree. I initially hated this casting. But she turned out to be the most captivating character. Her looks really translate beautifully to the screen, and her acting skills have improved a lot since the X-Men days.

I think this is excellent casting! I was not interested in Batman with Pattison but now I am. I think Kravitz will be an awesome Catwoman. And yes, her acting in the past was a bit stunted but she was the best thing in the second season of Big Little Lies.
I’m fairly into this. I still really hate Robert Pattinson as Batman, but I’m not a fan of either his looks or his acting, so he’s definitely not the choice for me.
I think we have a movie set in film-noir style with actors who are historically uneven in performances but always film nicely … but I guess that’s true to genre: Pretty but wooden.
I’m disappointed. They had the chance to have a Cuban actress (Catwoman was revealed to have a Cuban mother), and didn’t. It would be nice to have more Hispanic representation.

Also, @Xi Tang people of color are underrepresented PERIOD. So this IS “an OPPORTUNITY,” for women of color, black women, and multiracial women — of which most Cuban women are, so they should be celebrating too. You got Africa, Israel, France, America and the Bahamas represented in Zoe. The world should celebrate along with Black women.
By the way, I didn’t know that about part of the Mom’s background being Cuban. Are there Cuban references, does Catwoman speak Spanish, do they discuss Cuba and Cuban things in several books, etc? I’m just curious – would like to know. Is this a backstory that existed when Eartha Kitt played Catwoman on the TV series? Or is this a newer narrative in the comic strip series?
I still want to know why they’re making another Batman movie for the umpteenth time. D.C. Comics has an arsenal of characters and all they seem to do is remake Batman and Superman over and over. Time to let those characters rest for awhile.

No, Time Warner owns DC, like Disney owns Marvel in whole, it’s not a Sony/Spider Man/Marvel situation.
It’s been 7 years since the last solo Batman movie and will probably be 9 by the time it comes out. It’s one of DC’s most lucrative properties and they’re often aiming to bring in a newer generation, that’s not watching the older movies, than the ones that got hooked to the previous ones. That’s why, like Bond, it’s always going to cycle and be rebooted. If you’re tired of it, then it’s probably not for you as you’ve had enough exposure to the property. There are others though, who’s most prominent and first cultural exposure to Batman is going to be this movie and Rob Pattinson, assuming this series extends for a bit.
As for other characters, they need tent poles like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman so that they can afford to take risks. An Aquaman movie w/ a 200mil production budget would have gotten you laughed out of the room a few days ago. They’re also in the process of expanding the DCEU (Black Adam, Blue Beetle, Batgirl, Supergirl, etc), but some of that’s dependent on the financial success of some of the well worn properties.
I like Zoe, this could be interesting. I wasn’t really on board for another Batman film, but I’ll probably check this out at some point. I do hope that Jonah Hill is not in it though, I really dislike him for some reason.
My lack of excitement for Batman Part Eleven is definitely palpable. I think she’s a good choice but the most reaction I can muster is “…eh….yeah sure, why not?”.

I’m not excited for this, but I think Zoe could surprise us. I really think she delivered one of the strongest performances of BLL S2, which is particularly impressive considering the women she was up against. But in Divergent, X-Men, and every other cheesier film I’ve seen her in, she’s always so dull.
Maybe she’ll surprise, but I don’t think she really fits these type of roles.
Anyway, I doubt I’ll watch this film on the theatre anyway. I’m so done with emo, dark Batman. That horrible film with George Clooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger has become one of my favorites, because it’s so refreshing to see a Batman film actually be FUN.
I agree she was good in BLL and held her own among really talented actors.
Possibly the earlier stuff she has done simply wasn’t a good fit for her skills, and this will be good enough material to make her rise to the challenge.
I wasn’t sold on Anne Hathaway’s casting for the last one, even though she’s a great actress, but she really did great in the role.

With Robert Patterson and Zoe Kravitz being in the new Batman movie I’m pretty sure this’ll be the sleepiest movie ever.
I was personally rooting for Ana de Armas. Zoe is very attractive but her acting is meh. However she definitely has that femme fatale vibes required for Catwoman so it will interesting to see how portrays this character.

I think people need to allow for the fact that she is still growing and learning as an actress. Her earliest roles weren’t great; but she’s done some smaller stuff more recently which was solid, and she was fantastic in BLL. Give her a chance!

She meets Hollywood’s required shade for black actresses. The news that Lupita’s name was out there gave me hope that they were open to dark skin actresses as a main character/love interest but alas….
