Miranda Lambert: ‘This is pretty much my size. I’m a size 6, give or take five pounds’

miranda health mag

Miranda Lambert is, to me, someone I enjoy covering because she’s so messy. I feel similarly about Gwyneth Paltrow: horrid woman but so much fun to talk about. Different kinds of horrid, though. In Miranda’s case, she’s the kind of woman who gets off on breaking up marriages and tossing salads at strangers. She is also the kind of woman who speaks with a lot of authenticity about yo-yo-dieting and weight struggles and all of that. Almost as if her insecurities about her looks are part of the reason why she goes after traditionally “unattainable” married men, huh. All of that to say, I actually half-way like Miranda when she’s being real about diet and fitness and her weight. She talks about all of that and more in her Health Magazine cover profile. Some highlights:

When she feels sexy: “I feel most sexy when I feel happy. If I’m dolled up to the nines but I’m miserable, then I don’t feel sexy.”

Her 2015 divorce from Blake Shelton: “When everyone’s worried about your personal life, it makes you feel like, “Well, if you could just spend some of that time talking about my actual art, that would be great!” But I guess I asked for it, getting into this business. I’m never gonna get used to the public eye in that way.

Falling for her husband Brendan quickly: “I feel like I’ve been through enough in my life to know what I don’t want. So when I know what I do want, I snatch it right up.” Would you call it love at first sight? “I guess so. If that’s a thing. I have eight dogs. Had love at first sight with them, too. Must be way easier than I thought.”

Weight struggles: “I’ve been all sizes. My whole life, I’ve struggled with ups and downs in weight. I’m only 5’4″ so weight shows quickly on me. I’ve hit a comfortable place; this is pretty much my size. I’m a size 6, give or take five pounds, depending on the day. It’s so good to find your place. I don’t like being onstage worrying about my body. That’s the last thing I want to be thinking about. I don’t give my best performance when I’m distracted by my insecurities.

She’s not on a diet now: “I don’t have any rhyme or reason to my fitness routine or dieting. I’ve been on every diet. Every time I did low-carb, I would gain [the weight] back so quickly. Sometimes I have a couple weeks where I just drink beer and eat cheeseburgers. And then I’ll go, “That was fun, but my stuff doesn’t fit.” Then I’ll spend a month doing Pilates or riding a lot and running. I’m not a runner, but I’m trying to be one.

Working out with Brendan: “Sometimes. He does a pity run with me, and then he does his real run. It’s sad. These days, I just try to feel good about myself and know that I’m trying. And if there’s wine and cheese, sometimes I have it.

On her mom: “My mom is so beautiful. She’s a tall Cherokee Indian. If I can look like her at 60, I would be golden. All she ever used was witch hazel and Vaseline. And she’s always been a stickler for taking off your makeup. To me, a good face-wash feels like an emotional cleanse. And nowadays, sunscreen is a big part of my skin routine. It wasn’t when I was young, but now I’m in a hat all the time. I take really good care of my skin, especially being out on the road.

[From Health]

My mom uses Vaseline to take off her eye makeup too and I swear it works on her. I don’t wear eye makeup so I never do (but I buy nice eye cream, so that counts). As for this: “I’m only 5’4″ so weight shows quickly on me. I’ve hit a comfortable place; this is pretty much my size. I’m a size 6, give or take five pounds.” True or false? She’s definitely short and I would say that any weight gain shows quickly on her. What I don’t believe is that her natural body type hovers around a size 6? I’m going to need the receipts on that claim! But otherwise… yeah. I like how she kind of sounds over Brendan already too.

If she’s naturally a size 6, she wouldn’t have any struggles with her weight, no? When she says give or take 5 lbs, it’s more like give or take 25 lbs. No way am I shaming her but if you’re gonna be real, then be real. She started off sincere and then ended with a humble brag (of a lie).

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

A size six now is really comparable to a true size 10.

Vanity sizing made this change about… twenty-five years ago?

I know this because I wear a four, but weight about 131, as I did after my first baby 21 years ago… when I wore a size 8. So for those of us who are older than say, 20 or 25, it doesn’t matter, a number is a a number, but I always struggle to pick out the right size the first time because it sticks in my head. 🤷🏼‍♀️

  2. Jess says:

She might be a size six at like Old Navy? 💁🏻‍♀️ I’m the same size as Miranda (height, build, etc) and the struggle is real! I’m a size six at Old Navy, a size 8 at the Gap, and a size 10 at like couture places in NYC. Based on the fact she’s hella rich, I’m gonna say she’s an 8-10 but her stylists tell her she’s a 6. Her problem isn’t her size though… it’s her abhorrent personality.

    • Jerusha says:

      Exactly.

    • Bettyrose says:

Just described me exactly (the size part..not the abhorrent part), and based on the pic of her above I say that’s what’s going on here. She definitely has size 6 days.

      • Purplehazeforever says:

I’m a size 8, 5’4″ but have size 6 days. I was a size 4 in my thirties. It was super hard to maintain, though.

      • Bettyrose says:

Purplehaze yup. I was a 6-8 throughout my 20s with just a normal healthy lifestyle. Was a 4-6 in my 30s with a lot of effort, now up a couple sizes in mid-40s (and working on it but trying to be kind to myself too).

    • Emily says:

@Jess I agree. At some stores she probably is a size six due to vanity sizing. Im 5’3 and 115; I wear anything from a 2 to a 8 depending on the store.

  3. DS9 says:

It’s really difficult to judge size in photos.

She’s probably a size 6 in some things but to my eye, she looks more like a consistent 8-10 with the occasional size 6 dress working for her.

  4. Millennial says:

I’m 5’4 and size 6-8, and I’d say we look pretty similar. 6-8 looks kinda big on shorter girls. Plus we are used to looking at celebrities with 24-25 inch waists and that doesn’t help.

    • Kristina says:

Exactly this, millennial. I don’t have any idea what size people are- too many variables. But if she’s short, her size 6 will look much different than a 5’8” size 6. It’s not that unbelievable

      • Cindy says:

This. It’s not that it’s unthinkable for women to lie about their size, but I’m put off by this reaction so many women have that when one claims to be a smaller size than they expect you to be they jump to all kinds of conclusions…

A size 6 from a certain label can be the equivalent of a 12 somewhere else. Maybe you’re skinny but have a thick waist, or huge boobs. I’m a size 6 myself, but sometimes there’s 4’s that fit, sometimes a 10 doesn’t.

      • Still_Sarah says:

@ Kristina : Yes, sizes look different on women depending on height, shape. I was in a store and complimented a woman on her maxi dress that went almost to the floor. She said she said she got it at Muji (a store originally from Japan). I went to the store but the dresses were clearly not to the floor but were a few inches below the knees. Then I realized she must have been several inches shorter than me (I’m 5’6″), so it would be a completely different dress when I put it on. Maybe she was skinnier too 🙂

      • justwastingtime says:

This. 5’5″ here , I am typically a size 6 but wear between size 4 and size 8 depending on the line, I would totally believe that she is a size 6.

Also, she doesn’t know how to dress for her body if that street wear is an indication.

      • Jan080 says:

I’m between a 2 and 6 depending on the label. I’m 5’8. I believe Miranda and agree with Cindy. Why does one need receipts regarding her stated size? Seriously, it’s not that important. She doesn’t owe anyone proof. I don’t care who she is.

      • tealily says:

I agree with this, too. I am also 5’4″ and most comfortable when I’m at around a size 6. Sizes are never exact… size 6 can mean anything from 2-8 depending on the brand, but she looks about the same as me at a “6.”

  5. Trish-a says:

You need the receipts on what size she is? That’s odd.

    • Kaye says:

I don’t care what size people are, but if they’re going to insist on a size, make it a point of their whole interview, require that we believe it . . . then, yeah, I’m going to want to see receipts.

If you don’t want people questioning you, then leave it alone.

    • S says:

      @trish-a Right!

  6. Mrs. Smith says:

I’ve seen her up close and she’s def a size 8-10. That was a couple of years ago, but the recent photos seem like she looks about the same. No shame from me—I applaud the beer & cheeseburger diet! She is short and curvy. I also think she may be fudging the 5’4” a bit. I’m thinking more like 5’3”, but that’s just a guess.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

On the fudging line of thought…

I looked up photos of her mom… she is beautiful, but definitely shorter than ML in all photos shown, so “tall?”

      IDK about that.

  7. Originaltessa says:

She’s a 6 at the mall maybe. Sizing has gone whacko. Vintage clothes from the 80’s of my mother’s is size 10, and I can’t even get a leg in. I’m a size “6” too.

    • Christin says:

Vanity sizing has definitely changed through the years. I can remember in the 1980s that a size 4 was typically the smallest size available in catalogs. Now we have zeroes.

In antique shops, I have come across a size 16 dress from the 1950s-60s that would probably be a size 10 (at most) today.

      • Jana says:

Which is why in the 50’s Marilyn Monroe became famous even though she was a size 14-16, today she would be a size 6.

  8. I believe she’s a size 6, I’ve seen her live many times through a variety of weights. She mentioned she doesn’t exercise regularly and though she is smaller in stature she has no muscle tone in her limbs which makes her look pudgier than she is.

  9. Trish-a says:

My dr told me to accept my size. Naturally I’m a ten. If I diet I can be a 8. But if I’m true to myself I’m size ten. But 5’7. Some fluff.

  10. kerwood says:

Sizes have changed over the years. What used to be a size 6 is probably a size 4 or smaller now.

  11. It’sjustblanche says:

Spoiler: she’s not going to look good like her mom at 60. She’s not going to look good at 40 even.

  12. Marzipan says:

I love Miranda and her music, I really do, but… the size 6 thing… I just don’t buy it. Yeah, I’m also a size 6 , but it’s buried under all that fat…😜 I have a similar body type, and as I’ m over 50, I know how hard it is to stay slim. And the sizes of clothes are completely different, depending on where you buy. It’s annoying. By the way, the last time I actually was a size 6, I was twelve years old…😉

  13. Anon33 says:

I wish these types of interviews didn’t exist. We don’t need to know what size you are or what your weight fluctuations are. Just stop participating in this nonsense. “Health” magazine indeed.

  14. carmen says:

Did the interviewer pose the “size” question or did she volunteer the information? Seems a little problematic either way – ask about diet and fitness sure, but her size?

We can see how she looks and size means very little nowadays due to vanity sizing – i.e. a 6 in today’s sizing is what used to be a 10 or 12 lol. Weight is universal – 110 lbs is 110 lbs – but size means very little.

  15. emmy says:

Are we still talking about sizes? It’s so useless. I can be 3 different sized depending on where I shop so they really have no meaning anymore.

    • jenner says:

this is such an odd post…

    • Juju says:

I agree – every time a woman mentions their size in an interview I know there will be all sorts of comments about not believing her, etc. Why do people care so much whether Miranda can prove she’s a 6? (Every Mindy Kaling post has people enraged that she claimed to be size 8 at one point).

  16. Kittycat says:

The “my mom is a Cherokee Indian” part is super cringe. I’ll believe it when it’s verified lol. Also I agree, sizing is so arbitrary.

    • Kebbie says:

Her mom has darker skin. I wouldn’t have guessed Native American. She’s also shorter than Miranda in every picture I’ve seen of them, so the tall part doesn’t make sense.

    • Jamie says:

I totally agree on both points. You’d think by now people would know to bring the tribal receipts, so to speak, before making that kind of ancestry claim.
As for the sizing issue, there’s so much difference in sizing among different brands that it’s crazy. I don’t know how any woman is able to buy clothes online.

      • tealily says:

On the online shopping note… always look at the measurements of the garment, never focus on the size.

  17. Joanna says:

I hate how women’s sizes are so different depending on the brand. I can fit in a 10 if it’s a stretchy material with an elastic waist. But when I tried on clothes at Banana Republic, the 14 barely fit. So aggravating shopping for women’s clothes. Same with tops too. Some size large’s are tight while others are way too big. When I see something I like in the store, I’ll grab in at least 2 sizes to try on in the dressing room, ya just never know what’s gonna fit!

  18. Other Renee says:

This is why I could never buy clothes online. I would not know what size to buy. Anywhere from 8 to 12 might work. When I was a 5 foot 6 beanpole in high school, I was a size 10. Forty pounds later I’m still a 10?? That’s ridiculous.

  19. Paz says:

European sizes tend to be more real (at least to me) meaning brands like Zara or mango, and well a size 6 would be a 38, and yeah she doesn’t look like it, why the need to lie?

  20. Enn says:

Kaiser, I just want to know what eye cream you use!

    • Kaiser says:

      L’oreal Revitalift

    • Lady D says:

I started using Loreal Revitalift 5 weeks ago. Last week I was asked if I got new glasses, if I had dyed my hair, and if I had changed my makeup. (I don’t wear it) by three different people. It has made a real difference, especially in the lines on either side of my mouth. My crows feet weren’t deep, but they have vanished.

  21. PoochieSpice says:

Her recent pictures from this weekend puts her at a size 10 easily. I’m all for being comfortable and happy at any weight but she looks nothing like her very photoshopped pictures.

  22. Jaded says:

I don’t really care what size she is and it’s odd that she brought it up, however her ego is a size 1,000 and she has the morals of an ally cat in heat.

  23. AnneliseR says:

I’m the same height, I have only ever looked that large in pics when I was an 8-10 after childbirth. (I’m about a 4 and come from a family of fairly thin people.) Caveat that sometimes very small-boned people can wear a lower size than you’d imagine.

  24. Mar says:

She looks like a size 8.

  25. Original Jenns says:

I look like her body and I hover around a size 6. When I over indulged I creep up closer to an 8, and when I stay active I move down to a four-ish. And that can be because of 5lbs or 15 lbs. it’s all about where the weight is sitting on me, and whether it’s fat or muscles. That’s why I believe her, which is kind of nice. Most celebs don’t ring true because it doesn’t make sense to me and my body. And she’s saying what I’m trying to do, find that peace with my real body. And with the skin care in my 30s!

And I love when you cover her too, because she is so messy! It’s good gossip! Please more!!

  26. MariettaJones91 says:

There’s no way she’s a size 6. I’m 5’1″, 128lbs on a good day, and I have a big butt, but I’m a size 4 in mostly everything, (I weight train.) But I do have size 6 old navy jeans that are big in the waist and somehow just fit my butt. (I feel Old Navy does not make jeans for anyone with a butt.) There’s no way in hell that she has a 28″ waist. Just no. I don’t believe it at all.

Maybe on a good day she’s a size 8. But if she wants to continue lying to make herself feel better than so be it. I can’t wait for Karma to bite her back on her character, lifestyle, etc.

  27. Mylene - Mtl says:

Why celebrity have the needs to talk about theirs size ?

  28. Spicecake38 says:

If I was a millionaire I would have everything bespoke so that I never have to see a size tag again and feel good/bad about myself because of something so trivial.
OTOH-I’ll bite-I am a 4,6,8,10-usually hovering about a 6.I am 5’7 and weight around 145.My daughter is about 5’4 and 140.She is small and curvy where I’m long and straight/rectangle shape. We both wear the same size in almost everything, lol!sizing is crazy weird for women and I wish I didn’t care and I’m caring less, but yeah I still feel let down when something doesn’t fit.
I try to give up the vanity and actually buy the largest size that fits so there aren’t those days of feeling like you can’t wear half of your wardrobe because of 10 pounds of weight flux.

  29. Rose says:

I’m her height and I’ve met her, and there’s no way she’s a 6. I would guess 8-10 but her stylists take a few numbers off so she feels better.

  30. Veronica S says:

Eh, I had that build at a size 8, and she’s shorter than me, so yeah, I can see it. If you’re not slim in the frame, it always looks bigger on camera, and hips make a big difference in fit. It’s why they want models so painfully thin and angular in the face.

  31. Abby says:

My daughter is 5’5 127lbs and a size six. She’s willowy. Miranda is definitely not a size six….I would guess a 10.

  32. Dani says:

She’s not a six. I’m an 8 in ‘designer’ brands and I’m 5’7 145 lbs. She’s probably a 6 in like Old Navy, where I can fit in to a 4. I hate how celebs are constantly throwing their sizes around.

  33. Meija says:

Size 8 to 10 here and 5’8 Miranda has my middle and thighs no s size 6 there nope no way….BTW I’m fine with my weight like it is now but yeah I will never be 110lb size 4 again.

  34. Bread and Circuses says:

Jumping on the train to say that women’s sizes are arbitrary nonsense these days.

    I buy a yoga warmup jacket and I’m size 4. I buy a pair of jeans and I’m size 8 or 10.

And I’m not top-heavy or bottom-heavy; it’s all pretty proportional, so why the huge variation?
