Laverne Cox: ‘I’m 47 years old, I probably look better than I ever have in my life’

People Magazine has a new interview with Laverne Cox to promote her partnership with high end hair care brand Matrix, which is for color-treated hair. I haven’t used that brand except at the hairstylist and I don’t buy high end hair products. I know I should! I think of that whenever I watch Queer Eye. The quotes they have from her are presented without a lot of context, so it’s possible that some were emailed and some are direct quotes. I mention that because she talks about herself in the third person, but I think that could be an editorial decision by People based on something Matrix emailed them. You may remember that I saw a talk by Laverne several years ago. My son still brings that up occasionally, she made such a big impression on us.

Cox… tells PEOPLE. “For me, the idea of living your color is about embracing every single aspect of who I am.”

“Every shade and every color of Laverne is acceptable. It’s been such a journey for me to not orphan parts of myself, but to embrace every single color of the rainbow that is Laverne and I like to encourage everybody to do that, to bring all of you to the table,” [Cox] says. “Live your color.”

“When someone partners with Laverne Cox, they are alining themselves with a message of diversity, inclusion and welcoming everyone to the table… There is something for everyone in the Matrix Total Results line. I wouldn’t be aligned with the brand if there wasn’t. In 2019, we have to have beauty products that work for every hair type and every skin type.”

Although she loves a good wig — and happily admits to wearing one every day! — Cox’s natural hair health has drastically improved, thanks to coconut oil and the Length Goals line by Matrix Total Results (which includes a sulfate-free shampoo, a restoring conditioner and a multi-benefit styling spray).

“I stopped relaxing my hair in 2011 because I had so much damage. Now, I’m committing to oiling my scalp everyday and it actually lengthens and hydrates my hair,” says Cox, who also attributes her healthy natural hair to wearing protective styles like cornrows, loose braids and braided extensions under her wig.

As an actress, Cox says she “loves having the ability to transform myself, my look, and my character with hair.”

“I’ve been playing with color a lot more and encouraging people to play with color for fun. You have too because life is short… I’m 47 years old, I probably look better than I ever have in my life. I’m single, my career is in an amazing place, I’m living my dream and that it’s so beautiful…Live your color!”

I feel like this at 46, that I’m the best I’ve ever been, but as I always say it’s mostly because I give less f-cks about what people think of me. (My girl Kaiser just wrote about this in a story about Taylor Swift! This is a thing when you age.) It’s less about being sure of myself and more about realizing some universal truths about confidence. It’s a feeling and attitude, not an objective truth about your body, looks, career, friends or relationship. It helps to have this job, to think about these issues, and to see amazing examples of powerful women my age who are owning their age and style, like Laverne, Tracee Ellis Ross, Halle Berry, Michelle Obama and more. Fitness helps too. If you lift a lot of heavy things and do hard cardio you can feel better about just about anything. I know that is a privileged stance to take and I’m lucky to have the time, space and health to do that. Sh-t hurts more at this age too so you have to take it easy. If your hair looks gorgeous it helps though. It does! Laverne definitely has that and is a great choice for this campaign. Yes she wears wigs and they address that well in the promotional statements. I would wear them too if I could look like that.

I never would have guessed she was 47. She looks amazing. I also felt pretty great at that age, up through about 51. Now I’m almost 53 and I feel like everything is falling apart, lol. I’m working out harder than ever but no workout or diet will eliminate sagging skin, for example.

I’mw watching the show Atypical now, and it’s a good reminder to embrace my age rather than try to outrun it via surgery. Jennifer Jason Leigh’s overtweaked face is a disconcerting sight to behold.

She is really pretty. Nice teeth and smile. It’s not that surprising that when you get rich you look better than ever. So are all those blonde bob photos wigs? if not her blonde is very well maintained.

She is so stunning and her body is #goals.

She is lovely, I love the message of her partnership … and also that the name of the brand makes me think of Keanu. XO The BEST thing about getting older is the confidence it breeds. Everyone is in the same boat in life. Everyone. You can become so calm about things if you let yourself. But man, I do wish female celebrities let themselves age naturally. Female aging is OKAY. It is OKAY.

So are they hair color for wigs? Because that’s what she wears.

I’ve always though Laverne was beautiful, and she’s right, she looks better than ever.

She is simply spectacular. Her eyes radiate such joy in the header pick and my god, THAT DRESS.

40 was my lowest point. I felt like crap, got sick and almost died, then got depressed about mortality and such. It was brutal. But once I got past 40, I felt like a weight lifted. At 41 I started running, got a new job and just hit this place where i felt electric. Turned 42 and suddenly, after years of trying, finally got pregnant with baby #2. Had a great pregnancy and a healthy baby, and again was just filled with so much gratitude. Getting back into shape after was also not that hard – because I did it only to the extent I felt like it. Now I’m almost 45 and I’m in better shape than I have been since maybe 35.

It doesn’t have to be exercise. It’s letting go of unrealistic expectations and all the shit women do to please others. It’s self-care and believing that you’ve got this one life and YOU’RE the one that’s going to make it better for yourself – whatever that means to you. I love to see these stories and see women like Laverne and Helen and even JLo just looking confident and relaxed.

      @ TQB-HEAR HEAR 👏👏👏👏👏

Gonna turn 60 next month and I’m in the best physical and emotional health of my entire life. In Ocober I had emergency surgery for a huge perforated ulcer (not even close to dying but felt like I was, lol). I finally GOT that I’m loveable and deserve the kind of life that I couldn’t even dare to dream about.

You are so damn f*****g right–it IS self care and believing that I’VE got this ONE LIFE and I’M the one that’s going to make it better for myself-whatever that means to me! Still figuring this one out and I’m having some fun.

A quote from an app-“Life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about CREATING yourself”💕🥰

Wow, she looks so very pretty in that first pic! She looks so happy that I want to hug her. I would not have guessed she was 47,

I was just talking to my daughter today about how I need to find my old wig and invest in a few more now that I have a really short cut. My hair got too long and thick and wouldn’t fit under it anymore, so it’s packed away somewhere. I’ve never had a short-short cut, and I’ve been having fun styling that, but I’d love to have a selection of quality wigs to switch it up with too.
