2020 Golden Globe film nominations: who got recognized & who got snubbed?

Justin and Hailey Bieber go for a rainy day coffee run

The 2020 Golden Globe nominations are here! I’m splitting up the nominations into two posts, one for film and one for television. This is the film nomination post. A lot has happened with the critics awards in the past week, and just yesterday, the Critics Choice announced their awards too – it’s clear that the early favorites, as of early December, are The Irishman, Marriage Story, Joker and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I’m actually slightly surprised by how these campaigns and frontrunners have solidified so quickly. You can see the Critics Choice nominations here. And here are the major Golden Globe film nominations (you can see the full GG nomination list here).

“The Two Popes”

Best motion picture, comedy or musical
“Dolemite Is My Name”
“Jojo Rabbit”
“Once Upon a Time In Hollywood”
“Rocketman”
“Knives Out”

I’m sure there are a lot of happy people about Rocketman and Taron Egerton! Good for him. Lots of love for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Irishman, which I expected. I think it’s interesting that 1917 snuck in there with a drama nomination – the Academy loves a war film, so keep your eye on that Oscar campaign. Lots of love for Jojo Rabbit, which shouldn’t be surprising. Love for Marriage Story, also not a surprise. I’m happy to see Antonio Banderas getting lots of recognition, and of course I’m happy to see the Knives Out people! I don’t know, are there any major snubs? I can’t see them. Oh, CATS didn’t get nominated but of course Taylor Swift got nominated for that song she wrote for the film. LOL.

  1. Darla says:

Irishman was awful. I don’t know. Maybe I am just tired of men and all their stories? I was so bored, and I kept waiting to not be bored and it never happened. The acting was nothing to write home about either, and in fact, I would say only Pacino rose to the occasion. De Niro brought nothing. And I think he is one of our greatest actors, and I really like him, this isn’t personal. He brought nothing. So whatever. I certainly did not see myself on the screen. A complete shut out for women, don’t even start with the “oh she never spoke but was the most important character in the film” isht! Men would love for you to start believing that malarkey, as Joe Biden would say.

    • Lucy says:

I liked the movie and have been a Scorsese fan since Mean Streets. I think Joe Pesci was the real standout in the cast. I agree about DeNiro and he used to be my favorite actor but he’s sort of become a caricature of himself.

      • Esme says:

@Lucy, I also think Joe Pesci was the standout actor in the movie. He doesn’t use any of his usual tricks, he keeps his face almost still and direct and merciless. I liked the movie, and its elegiac tone, and its meditation on death, but I believe it might appeal more to longtime Scorsese fans. It’s not really a movie for modern audiences.

      • Darla says:

Huh. It’s funny because yeah Pesci did do all that, in other words, did nothing, and I assumed it was because he’s very elderly at this point. Maybe I am wrong. I didn’t read a great performance into that.

Lucy, sorry, the film is a huge snooze.

    • Sean says:

Agreed about The Irishman. I had to watch it in parts and while it’s good, I don’t think it’s Golden Globe or Oscar worthy. If it wasn’t Scorsese, I don’t think it’d be nominated. Also, the de-aging effects didn’t jive with me. Even when DeNiro’s character was supposed to be in his 30s, he still looked old in movement and he ended up looking closer to 50. At times, the CGI appeared unnatural. It still couldn’t hide the fact that these men are OLD. I don’t blame DeNiro, etc. It’s happens to us all. However, there were certain scenes that came off as laughable because no matter how much de-aging the production did, the actors are still un their 70s. The scene at the grocery store is a good example of this.

      Btw, Marriage Story is phenomenal.

      • LadyLaw says:

There was a lot of just gratuitous nonsense in the Irishman. And a lot of things they didn’t really flush out for unknown reasons. What was the point of all of the time they devoted to them whacking that rude guy in the restaurant? They introduced him as a character just to kill him off. And why not actually develop deniros daughter as a character? Why hire someone who can actually act (Anna Paquin) to speak 7 words?

Deniro was terrible. Definitely not what he once was as an actor. I thought Pacinos performance was very strong and Pesci was decent as well.

      • DragonWise says:

Could not agree more about the de-aging effects. They looked so odd and kept pulling me out of the story–it basically looked like virtual fillers. Really unnatural, and I agree that it didn’t actually make them look younger because their bodies are still elderly and move as such. I wanted to like the movie, as I am a big Scorcese fan, but I 100% agree that the pacing was too slow and the movie itself was a good half hour too long. It wasn’t terrible, but definitely not awards-worthy.

      • petee says:

My friend really liked The Irishman but I haven’t seen it.I will say I didn’t like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.I have been sick so I ordered it on Demand.I called and got my money refunded.

    • Jellybean says:

I gave up after about 20 minutes. All the actors were 30 years too old and it was disconcerting and sad.

      • Giddy says:

I had looked forward to the movie, but was hugely disappointed. I didn’t even watch until the end. It was a cheap copy of their mob movies from previous decades, and the 70-ish actors’ attempts at swagger were sad.

    • Millenial says:

I’m tired of men’s stories, too. I was an English major at a very traditional program. There isn’t a (white) man’s story that I haven’t already read (I mean really) and probably read a better version of than whatever The Irishman is. I mean, honestly.

I looked at The Irishman and pretty much immediately knew it wasn’t for me. Marriage Story I watched last night and it was so interesting, especially through the gossip lens of knowing the Noah Baumbach/Jennifer Jason Leigh backstory. But it least it centered a woman’s story as half the movie.

      • BellaBella says:

In terms of snubs, I can think of some: Olivia Wilde, Greta Gerwig.

C’mon GG, throw some women into the mix!!!

    • Andrea says:

I was strongly advised against watching the Irishman by several people. Only one coworker was surprised many others told me not to watch it.

    • Jerusha says:

I prefer early Scorsese-Who’s That Knocking, Mean Streets, Aluce …, Taxi Driver, to any of his later work. I actively hated Good Fellas, Casino, The Wolf of Wall Street, several more. I watched The Irishman on Netflix and thought it was nothing special. Not deserving of any awards. Won’t ever watch it again.

    • Jadedone says:

The Irishman was terrible, I didn’t even finish it. That being said I didn’t hate it as much as I hated Once Upon a time in Hollywood. I have never wanted to walk out of a movie as bad as I did during Hollywood.

      • petee says:

Lol.I hated Once Upon A Time In Hollywood too.I thought it was awful.

      • dj says:

Also, here for both my husband and I HATED Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. It was way too long. No reason for implied violence about someone’s dead spouse.

    • Anne Call says:

Darla, I hear you about being bored with men and all their stories. I’m just so unmotivated to watch this movie, feel like it’s been made 10 times before. I still haven’t gotten through all of Once Upon a time in Hollywood, stopped watching during the interminable Leo scene trying to do his lines on that western tv show. Watched Marriage Story yesterday and loved it.

      • Bookworm1858 says:

OMG yes I hated that Leo scene! I mean, I like the young child actress (she’s excellent on American Housewife) but I almost fell asleep watching him.

    • Sorella says:

I thought my husband and I were the ONLY people who did not like The Irishmen. We are big Scorcese fans, but the movie was boring and felt flat to us. And I love me some Joe Pesci, but NO PERFORMANCE in that movie, including his wowed me. And the CGI to make them look younger was SO distracting, hated it.

    • Katrine Troelsen says:

Right Darla! I came to say just “Wauw its just men and men and men. All the films are about MEN”. I will never watch a movie like The Irishman cause it will never speak to me, its a bunch of old men. WE HAVE SEEN U. WE HAVE HEARD ALL YOUR STORIES: STAHP! These old farts should start watching films with black women in them and stop showing off themselves.

  2. Lala11_7 says:

I can not STAND Scarlet when she opens her mouth off screen….however, when you pair her with a GOOD director (as she has had in the MCU…and in Marriage Story)…she WILL deliver…and THAT…she DID in THIS!

    • Lightpurple says:

Watched Marriage Story the other night and she is excellent in it, her nomination is deserved.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I can’t stand when anyone does it! JLo always does it. Stewart. Lawrence. The open-mouth sex face has had its day imo, and it’s time to move on lol.

      • ooshpick says:

both she and adam driver should win for marriage story….and also noah baumbach. amazing for hollywood.

      • Chicken says:

I think Lala is referring to Scarlett’s habit of sticking her foot firmly in her mouth on a regular basis by saying a bunch of entitled, exclusionary crap.

      • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

You are so right Chicken. Ugh, just reread with full attention turned on. I’m an idiot.

      • Jane'sWastedTalent says:

Then that makes two of us because I immediately thought of the same thing.

    • Rapunzel says:

I started Marriage Story last night and it was surprisingly good, though I didn’t finish it. I didn’t expect to like it so much.

Seeing Knives Out tomorrow. Cannot wait.

    • Dani says:

I hate her but had to watch Marriage Story for Adam because I love him. The trailer was very very good too. I hate how much I liked her in it. It was excellent and I cried more than I should admit.

    • Emma33 says:

I just finished Marriage Story two minutes ago, so the tears are still wet on my cheeks! An outstanding film – these are the kinds of mid budget, human relationship films that don’t seem to get made much anymore. I loved it because of its specificity in really nailing down some aspects of divorce I hadn’t seen before (for example, how stressful it is to find a lawyer, how the lawyers are friendly with each other.) Alan Alda was superb.

      • Gemma says:

The acting was brilliant all around. And Alan Alda is always a joy.
But overall I couldn’t muster any empathy for neither of the protagonists. Someone mentioned a similar story in Kramer vs Kramer and I remember crying so much.

    • Heather says:

I watched Marriage Story the other night. Scarlett did have some powerful moments in the film, but there were times when I could tell that she was acting…which removed me from the scene altogether.
I’m not saying she did a bad job…but I didn’t think it was Golden Globe-fabulous.

  3. Cherry says:

No Jlo for Hustlers? That’s a notable snub, am I wrong?

    • Leriel says:

She actually got nomination as best supporting.

    • Lola says:

      She’s in under supporting actress.

    • josephine says:

she was nominated, albeit in the best supporting category.

    • Lucy says:

She’s nominated and if she wins, and she will, it won’t be because she’s better than the other actresses in the category because she isn’t. She’ll win for being 50 and working a pole

      • Darla says:

        Jesus.

      • DiegoInSF says:

Wow Lucy, easy with the misogyny! Her character was much more than working a pole. She made her empathetic and multifaceted, not just a one note stereotype.

      • Sarah says:

If she wins an Oscar, and she will if nominated, it will be because the Academy loves her and have invited her to attend and/or present at the awards for nearly two decades. JLO works her ass off and while she may not be the best this year, merit is only a small part of how these awards are decided. She has staying power in the film industry for a reason, and it’s not working a pole …good grief.

      • lucy2 says:

I disagree, I think she was good in the role.

      • Jerusha says:

I haven’t seen Hustlers yet, but Jennifer L. is a very good actress. She’s up against a lot of other good actresses, though. Annette Benning was wonderful as Diane Feinstein in The Report, and why doesn’t she have an Oscar already, given the fantastic work she’s done for decades.

      • Sorella says:

EVERYONE I know who saw the movie don’t think that JLo is worthy of awards. They thought she was good, but not award-wow good.
I’m curious if CB people feel the same?!

      • Grant says:

Were we watching the same movie? Jennifer Lopez was incredible in Hustlers, and not just because she worked the pole like a boss–which she did. She gave an incredibly nuanced and ranged performance that went so much further than just looking hot in a strip club. I hope she wins the whole thing.

      • Wisca says:

I think what Lucy is saying is that many Oscars go to hooker-type roles (and maids and servant and slaves) and that when she was phenomenal–as in Selena or Out of Sight–there was not as much buzz. These roles reify white male supremacy. Old white men in Hollywood will award JLo for her pole work just like Hattie McDaniels for her maid work and Lupita for her slave work.

    • Becks1 says:

      She’s nominated.

      • Rhys says:

@Wisca – I read it the same way. It’s not about JLo being a good/bed/whatever actress. It’s about the Academy feeling that they will do a huge favor to a hard working 50 year old woman, and in the process will look good.

  4. Louise says:

    F!#k, Jennifer, why!?

    • DiegoInSF says:

Because she was incredible in Hustlers, giving one of the best performances of the year.

    • Grant says:

Why all the Lopez shade? Did you even see Hustlers? She was superb and, frankly, her nom (and, hopefully, win) is long overdue IMO.

      • Nic919 says:

I went in thinking Jlo was being overpraised, but she really carries that movie. Constance Wu is a non entity though. Also her bangs bothered the hell out of me in the film.

Jlo can act when she isn’t in romcom garbage. She’s a much better actress than singer and while she does play a stripper, she’s empowered throughout the film.

I do think Laura Dern is probably her competition during the awards season. I do love Annette Benning, but she doesn’t figure much in the Report and she does much better leading actress work in Hope Gap, although I don’t know if that will be released this year.

  5. Leriel says:

“Taylor Swift got nominated for that song she wrote for the film” – I will be really surprised if she wins, but The Lion King received nomination as best animated (is Disney trolling themselves?) than Beyonce gets a lot of chances (and campaign) for winning, plus Frozen II of course.

Little women were totally snubbed, no nominations, and Columbia did a screening for GG, so I guess they didn’t like the movie, what the Academy will do 🤔

    • deezee says:

The GG panel was probably wondering why the girls were talking so much.

      • Leriel says:

Well, they awarded Ladybird as best comedy (didn’t deserve it, terribly edited movie), but I guess it wasn’t enough for Greta to become HFPA darling.

    • Bookworm1858 says:

Saoirse got nominated for LW! Though disappointing no Greta for director. Obviously I haven’t seen the film yet but yet again no female directors nominated.

  6. BlueSky says:

I was glad to see Eddie Murphy nominated for “Dolemite is My Name”

No nominations for “Queen and Slim” though

    • cherriepie84 says:

No surprises here, Dolemite was a pretty good movie and Eddie Murphy was quite engaging!

    • Dee Kay says:

I don’t think Eddie Murphy will win but he deserves it for that amazing performance in Dolemite Is My Name!!

    • DragonWise says:

Eddie killed it, but all of the acting was great. My fiance and I stumbled across it, and were very pleasantly surprised at how good a film it was.

  7. Chelsey says:

    These are…interesting.

I’m definitely happy to see Taron up there for Rocketman. He was amazing.

  8. Bex says:

Little Women is absent from a lot of categories it was expected to show up in.

Having seen it, Uncut Gems and Adam Sandler’s performance is worthy of a nomination but I was never expecting it to do well here because the film is just too loud and frenetic for this crowd to like.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Taylor win even against a juggernaut like Frozen. The HFPA are notorious starfuckers and Let It Go lost to a U2 song nobody remembers at the Globes.

ETA: another big snub- Jeremy Strong as Kendall on Succession was amazing and he didn’t get nominated but Kit Harington did for scowling on GoT.

    • LNG says:

Adam Sandler was on Howard Stern this week talking about this movie. I found it very hard to wrap my mind around him in an Oscar worthy film!!! I’m going to have to actually see it!

      • Bex says:

He’s genuinely great in it, as is Idina Menzel, Lakeith Stanfield and (very surprisingly) Kevin Garnett.

I loved every second of it but it’s going to be divisive. It’s sensory overload with no let up for 2 hours and Sandler’s character is an asshole with zero redeeming qualities who makes one terrible decision after another. People will either get swept up in the chaos or find it obnoxious as hell. Definitely not your typical ‘awards’ movie.

    • Marianne says:

They might have got the screener late….

    • Dee Kay says:

Jeremy Strong totally deserved a nom…hopefully the Emmys will get it right. He deserves not just a nom but a WIN.

  9. Becks1 says:

So out of these the only movie I have seen is OUATIH, and I really liked it. I don’t get to the movies that much so I’m kind of excited that the Irishman and Marriage Story are on Netflix, so I can feel more prepared for awards season.

I am surprised Cats didn’t get more nominations, just because it seems like something the GG would love?

    • Lightpurple says:

Dolomite is also on Netflix and Two Popes will be later this month.

    • Another Anne says:

Cats wasn’t eligible because they still don’t have screeners ready, and missed the deadline to be eleigible for nominations. Not sure how the song got in, but perhaps that has a different deadline.

  10. Esme says:

No Dujardin for “J’accuse”? That is a snub indeed, he was excellent

  11. PlayItAgain says:

Do the Globes have a cinematography category? I hoped The Lighthouse would be nominated. It was gorgeous.

  12. Emily says:

Wow, Scarlet and Colin Jost are really starting to look like one another. 🤢

  13. Lightpurple says:

The Farewell is not a comedy. Awkwafina deserves a nomination but not in comedy. And the woman who played the grandmother deserves one too.

  14. Becklu says:

I think Late Night was snipped best screen play. It was one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. I haven’t seen Knives are out but I’ve heard so many good things I’m excited to see it get so many moms. Also really happy about Emma Thompson

  15. Louisa says:

No Nicole for Bombshell. Wasn’t that expected?

  16. Milkweed says:

I watched Marriage Story yesterday. It made me not want to get divorced, not be married to Noah Baumbach, Scarjo’s character, or Adam Driver’s character, and not want to live in LA or NYC. I loved Laura Dern!

    • FHMom says:

I don’t want to see it because of the subject matter. However, I love Adam Driver. Can’t decide.lol

  17. Emily says:

YAy JLO and Emma Thompson. Those were the only movies I watched this year. So many of the “Oscar worthy” movies are a snooze.

  18. Maria says:

Tired of Scarlett Johansson and her rape-condoning rat face. Downloaded Marriage Story and it fell flat.

  19. Evil Owl says:

Scarlett was outstanding in Marriage Story. A nuanced, sensitive & inspired performance. But I still couldn’t keep my focus on her whenever Adam Driver was in the frame. The man has so much presence and layers vibrating off of other layers. And I say this as someone who finds him physically unattractive, bordering on slightly repulsive. Which makes me wonder, is the Charlie character crafted more sympathetically for the audience or is it Driver’s performance that had my heart breaking more for him than Nicole?

    • Lena says:

Noah Baumbach writes his life and although I think he bent over backwards to show both sides of his divorce with Jennifer Jason Leigh, we are seeing how it went down through his eyes so to speak. And I’m glad I don’t have to vote because I honestly couldn’t decide between Adam Driver and Jauquin Phoenix for best actor. I liked marriage story more than hustlers so I enjoyed Laura Dern’s performance more than JLo’s for supporting. And I agree with the posters that the Irishmen deserves nothing!

      • SummerSky says:

I thought The Irishman was magnificent. Fight me. Sad to see no love for Waves. One of my favorites of the year.

    • Lightpurple says:

Without going into too much detail so not to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it, he comes off as more sympathetic because of the child custody battle. The whole Halloween sequence is heartbreaking.

      • Marianne says:

I think they’re both sympathetic though. Yes, you feel bad for Adam’s character because it seems unfair that he has to pay (partially) for her divorce lawyers and he gets conflicting information about whether he should file in NY or LA. But, I thought she was sympathetic too.

    • Jerusha says:

Adam Driver has “It.” I’ll watch him in anything. (Except Girls, as that would require watching Lena Dunham, too. No)

      • Paz says:

Well it was a bit based on Noah and Jennifer J.L divorce right? So I think that’s why Adam’s character was sympathetic, but you can still see how selfish and flawed he was.

      • No Doubt says:

He was the only good thing about Girls!

      • Nic919 says:

I wonder what this movie would have been like if Michelle Williams was playing the lead against Adam Driver. Scarjo was ok but Driver stole all the scenes from her.

  20. Michelle says:

I just saw A Marriage Story over the weekend and I thought it was really good. I am not a Scarlett fan, but she morphed into her character really well. The argument they had in his apartment was so raw. Man, so raw. Adam Driver was excellent.

    • Fiona says:

I found the argument scene comical. All they did was yell at each other and move their arms around. I can’t stand Scarjo but I watched the movie for Adam Driver. I thought he was good, but I don’t get all the hoopla around the movie, she was so overacted it was unbearable

  21. Bubbled says:

Bong Joon Ho was one of the 5 nominees for Best Director, but his film Parasite didn’t get into the 10 nominees for Best Film (it could be considered a comedy, though it makes more sense as a drama, I think).

  22. Kathgal says:

How are Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers and JLo in Hustlers considered supporting roles? Not being snarky, I am actually wondering how.

  23. Elizabeth says:

I watched the Irishman over the weekend. I typically like mob type movies, but that one was incredibly boring.

  24. Sierra says:

Christian Bale for the Best Actor but it will go to Joachim Phoenix..

  25. Allergy says:

Taron Egerton and Rocketman should both win.

  26. Sam Louise says:

I was completely blown-away by Marriage Story. I sat down to watch it on Saturday night and felt like I’d been through a mental and physical workout by the end. Brilliant! Adam Driver’s acting during the big fight in his apartment was some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. I’m not a Scarlet fan but even she was excellent. I hope they both win!

  27. Ann says:

I might be alone in this but I’m happy Taylor got nominated. And I hope she gets an Oscar nomination too. And I hope she wins them both! She probably won’t but you never know. The nominations mean we will see a Taylor Swift Oscar campaign and I am totally here for that.

I couldn’t get through The Irishman. I usually really like Scorsese but I found the movie boring. It moved too slow and there were no Scorsese-esk quotable moments. Unless there were and I was just too bored to notice?

  28. eto says:

Parasite was sooooo good – happy to see it get some recognition. Also loved Dolemite!

    • SummerSky says:

Parasite was incredible. Wish it would have grabbed a best picture nom as well as some acting noms.
ETA: I just read that Parasite, The Farewell, and Pain and Glory didn’t qualify for Best Picture under GG rules because they featured more than 50% non-English language dialogue.

      • PPP says:

Ewwwwww what a neo-colonial rule. The French can acknowledge Kristen Stewart but we can’t acknowledge foreign films and then if they’re Nigerian and in English we won’t nominate them for Best Picture. This rule is a xenophobic holdover and needs to be dropped. Parasite is the best film of the last decade. South Korea has been making the world’s best films for a while now.

  29. MellyMel says:

Parasite should have gotten a best picture nomination, but at least Bong Joon Ho got some love.

  30. Jerusha says:

I doubt they’ll win, but I’m so happy to see Awkwafina and Taron Egerton in the running. They were great in their films.

  31. Grant says:

I hope that Jennifer Lopez takes it all the way to Oscar gold. I love me some Laura Dern and I’m excited to watch Marriage Story, but Lopez blew me away in Hustlers.

  32. Valiantly Varnished says:

Yes – someone was very notably snubbed. And her name is Lupita Ny’ongo for Us.

  33. Carina says:

wow, talk about very little diversity. also it’s sick how Baumbach tried to rewrite his cheating story into A Marriage Story. This is a guy who ran off with Greta Gerwig as his wife was IN LABOR! He is Adam Driver. Baumbach is a sicko & A douchebag, but whatever, people clearly don’t care – not on here & not in the industry.

I don’t care about ScarJo or if she gives the greatest performance in history. There’s SO much hypocrisy in these comments & beyond. You can’t say “ohhh I don’t support her & her defense of Woody Allen”…but then watch her stuff. That’s not how that works. That watch, that click, it all supports her. Just be honest -those words mean nothing. If you watch it or Black Widow or any of her material, THAT is a statement, that statement is “I don’t care”

    • Maria says:

      This.

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

Lolol. Where did you get that he left her while she was in labor?! They split right after she gave birth. Even Jennifer says this. Im not defending him but it wasn’t as dramatic as him leaving her while she was giving birth!

      • Paz says:

I’ve seen this argument about him being “the worst”, which fine, could be, but I mean everyone makes mistakes, it’s not like he is a pedophile or a criminal. And at this point it seems that not even Jennifer Jason Leigh herself cares that much.

      • Maria says:

I think that was for exaggerative emphasis (though I wouldn’t be surprised). He’s still a creep and a narcissist, as is his leading lady.

  34. Anne says:

JLo killed it in Hustlers. Just like I am super-glad Jen Aniston got her nomination for TMS, I am glad JLo got hers too. I don’t really like when actresses get so type-cast so this was such a nice surprise.

  35. PPP says:

I really want Parasite to win best picture Oscar. Not best foreign-language Oscar, Best Picture, because it IS the best movie this year and maybe this decade, period. Disappointed that it’s only there for Best Screenplay and not director or picture.

    • Ela says:

I am so disappointed that I didn’t get to see it. It was only on for one week in our cinemas, which in itself was a miracle. I have been watching Korean dramas for over a decade and think Korea has some of the best writers, cinematographers and editors.

      • PPP says:

SK has been killing it. I was lucky enough to live there for a bit and they have this thing called DVD-bans. It’s basically like a mini theater and you can rents DVDs and a room and buy snacks, and they often sell comfy PJs right outside. I used to go with my friends and just mainline Korean movies. Better education than my time in film school.

      • Jerusha says:

I watch every South Korean film I can get my hands on. One I particularly love is My Love, Don’t Cross That River. Beautiful and moving. If you haven’t seen it, do so, please.

    • Star says:

Parasite was really great and one of the only good movies I’ve seen this year (I’m picky lol), but for the decade it’s gotta be Sorry to Bother You.

  36. FHMom says:

I saw Knives Out over the weekend and was surprised by how good an actor Daniel Craig is. I always only think of him as James Bond.

    • Sue M says:

Check Daniel Craig in Logan Lucky. A terrific little caper film. You WILL think he is a native southern red neck!

  37. Daisy says:

Taylor got nominated for that awful song she wrote for the One Chance movie with James Corden, so of course she would get one for this one even tho it sucks as well. Doubt it will get an Oscar nom tho.
Anyway, l’m happy for Bong Joon Ho and Antonio Banderas. Their movies were excellent, the best of the year for me.

  38. Ali says:

Laura Dern is great in both BLL and Marriage Story.
    Marriage Story is heartbreaking.
I saw where’d you go Bernadette recently and really liked Cate Blanchett’s performance in it but I feel like she is a kooky, snooty, genius artist in real life, too.

  39. Lowrider says:

Brad will clean up every award show in the supporting category.

Ana will win for Knives Out.

How are 1917 and Bombshell nominated when they haven’t been released.

    • Leriel says:

They will be released till the end of the year, and HFPA members watch movies mostly during special screenings for them.

    • Truth hurts says:

He did an amazing job making people pity his sorry ass this year didn’t he.. that was his best performance!!

  40. 2lazy4username says:

Marriage Story was AMAZING. As one currently separated and headed for divorce after 30 years together, I can attest to how ducked up the whole process is. This captured the layers of heartbreak and anger and despair and disbelief perfectly. Scarlett and Adam were both unbelieveable in it. In fact, the whole cast was stellar. (How hilarious is Merritt Wever, though?)

  41. Onemoretime says:

The Irishman was long and boring. Come on people tell the truth, no more mob movies Martin. And I love godfather 1 & 2, Good Fellas and the Departed. The only stand out performance was Pesci.

  42. Nina says:

Parasite was PHENOMINAL and I’m so sad not to see it up for best drama.

  43. LA says:

Sorry if I’m repeating a comment. I thought it was interesting/surprising that Charlize and Margot both got nods, but Nicole didn’t. Haven’t seen the movie yet, but she’s generally such an awards darling that it struck me.

  44. Andrea says:

Well, we know that there were no black people to nominate in any category, whether male or female.

  45. Boudica says:

It seems I’m in the minority here, but I thought ‘The Irishman’ was brilliant. I’m not a fan of mob films per se, but the fact it’s based on fact makes a difference. And the cast! I wasn’t too keen on that computer-generated de-aging, which didn’t work and made De Niro look like a strange version of John Wayne at times with those blue contact lenses. But the acting! Those men can act, Each one – De Niro, Pacino, Pesci, Keitel – can convey so much in a slight change of facial expression and tone of voice. And when two or more of them are acting together in a scene the nuances can be so subtle they are missed. It’s a film that demands your full attention at all times, not just because of the nuanced performances but also because of the layers to the story. I wondered how Sookie Stackhouse got a role in the gig but later decided Paquin probably had Keitel in her corner. On reflection I think Anna Paquin did a fine job with the role because she is able to convey much with a sneer or a squint and that body language made perfect sense for her character.

    • Truthiness says:

Wondered how Sookie Stackhouse got a role? Academy Award winner Anna Pacquin? She was the first millennial to get an Oscar nom for acting, and the first winner.

      • Boudica says:

I saw ‘The Piano’. Paquin was a child when she made that film 26 years ago and I think she was very lucky to receive the recognition she got. She had no acting experience and it was a fluke she got the role. She said of it, “That was a combination of Holly Hunter being an amazing actress, Jane being an extraordinary director and me being in the right place at the right time. I had no idea what I was doing. It’s given me this amazing life, but it’s not the highlight of my career.” She has natural talent though, as is evident from the way she portrays her character in ‘The Irishman’.

  46. A says:

I’m tired of ScarJo and Adam Driver. They’re really really mediocre and you just know Adam Driver is gonna get the same career trajectory as someone like Casey Affleck even though he’s just really boring to watch. I found A Marriage Story an overwraught mess, and the scene where they were screaming at each other was hilarious which I do not imagine was their intention. But whatever, this is gonna get them their Oscar noms and probably Adam Driver is gonna win because Hollywood loves rewarding mediocre looking white dudes.

If people want to watch a really really good movie about a portrait of a marriage, and they’re cool with foreign films, I’d suggest A Separation by Asghar Farhadi.

  47. Lauren says:

Knives out was EXCELLENT the actress that was nominated totally deserves it.

  48. Star says:

I’m not one to usually advocate for overlooked white dudes, but Theodore Pellerin was snubbed for On Becoming a God in Central Florida. That dude was freaking weird and brilliant in that role. I’m glad Kirsten got nominated but he really stole every scene for me.

  49. PutnamPrincess says:

The snubbing of women in the director category continues. They only give it to white men.

  50. Sue M says:

You can’t see who got snubbed? No woman directors nominated. In a year with such movies helmed by women as Queen & Slim, Hustlers, Little Women, The Farewell, Harriet, A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, Honey Boy. In fact, women were shut out of most categories. https://www.indiewire.com/2019/12/golden-globes-2020-female-filmmakers-shut-out-1202195720/

  51. Heather says:

And nothing for Tom Hanks in “Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”?

  52. Redgrl says:

I thought Knives Out was completely over rated schlock. Went to see it with high hopes (and I love Daniel Craig and like Jamie Lee Curtis a lot too) and was so disappointed. Heavy handed, took itself too seriously, poorly edited. Saw the “twist” a mile away. A mess. Of course having seen the truly excellent Good Liar with Helen Mirren the week before anything would have suffered in comparison! That (Liar) was a spectacular film.
