Ariana Grande made one of the more dramatic entrances at the Grammys in this absolutely voluminous Giambattista Valli. She said her stylist, Law Roche (he also does Zendaya, Celine Dion and Jameela Jamil), cried when he saw her in it. This dress reminded me so much of the giant iconic pink dress Rihanna wore to the 2015 Grammys so I checked and that was also by Giambattista Valli. I love it and I think Ariana is working it. She’s not working GV as much as Rihanna did, but that’s a very high bar. I missed Rihanna last night but it’s been four years since she brought us a new album!
Also I read some criticism on Twitter of Ariana’s gloves. I agree she could have gone without the gloves. Ariana did a medley of her hits last night that was a little subdued, but I loved the sets, she had a whole rotating bedroom, and her dancers were incredible. Ariana was nominated in four categories, all of which went to Billie Eilish or Lizzo. Oh and she came with her parents, which was cute. Here’s a side by side of Ari and Rihanna’s looks.

Jameela Jamil was also styled by Law Roach. Jameela was in a tiled metallic blue and black tulle tiered ruffled Georges Chakra gown with an inexplicable sheer panel mid-skirt. I dislike that feature and it’s somewhat rare on gowns for good reason. This might be ok if the skirt ended right before the sheer part. Jameela’s boyfriend, James Blake, was nominated for best alternative music album which went to Vampire Weekend.
H.E.R. was nominated in five categories but didn’t take home anything last night. She did an incredible performance of her new sing, “Sometimes,” that included a rocking guitar solo. I’m not going to lie, I went to bed before this happened as H.E.R. didn’t go on until after 11 EST (when the Grammys should have been over, they went on for a half hour after that). I just watched it this morning and I’m going to download that song now.
H.E.R. was in a strikingly beautiful kimono with a gold belt. This was one of my favorite looks and I loved her hair and makeup especially.

Yes! She’s too tiny for such a big & voluminous gown. And I’m sick to death of her damn ponytail (I know it’s her “signature” but I’m sick of it all the same).

Ariana looks like a featherduster and the second grey dress she put on later is even worse. I agree @T on the spray tan, but the makeup is overkill, it looks like a mask – I wish that ott contouring craze would go away already
I love the color of Jameela’s dress but that sheer panel does not add anything, it subtracts.
The gloves make Ariana’s look too precious, like she should have a chorus of animated woodland creatures with her.
I agree that the hairstyle on H.E.R. is amazing, not sold on the gold midriff, but the whole look is great overall.
I love Arianna’s dress more that Rihanna’s. Something about Rihanna’s just looked odd. Probably that it started literally just below the boobs. All of those outfits are good though.

I like this grey colour, but who’s paying for these dresses. Honestly it’s so unfair that celebs are getting custom dresses for free, yes it’s for one night but still, they have all money and such a waist isn’t even payed.
Nothing is for free. The designers get “free” publicity, even the worst dressed ones. Ariana’s picture is all over social media and on every website that covered the granny a. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement for everyone involved.
Yeah but how many Ariana’s followers can afford Giambattista dress? Making a hella expensive dress (it doesn’t cost 100$, it’s an expensive brand and it isn’t simple silk dress) for an artist, basically for nothing back is weird and I can’t wait when most luxurious brands will fall one by one because even in Instagram age it still isn’t a fair barter, imo.
Leriel, this isn’t about being affordable for Ariana’s followers. The designer is getting free (unless the person has a paid contract to wear that designer) advertising for relevance beyond the runway and print, and the person wearing the dress is getting a sort of cultural presence advertising by being talked about and featured in multiple locations in that dress. It’s free advertising for all involved across all fashion media platforms. It’s a win-win exchange, which is why famous people and designers have a long-standing mutual relationship in this regard (and which, unfortunately, is another reason for women to stay so very thin: to be able to fit into sample dresses and therefore be eligible for being lent designer dresses).
Lizzo, for example, her dress was assuredly made for her–at great expense, yes. But Versace has now further free advertising of being inclusive, of having the talent to cut and design for every figure, not just model thin, of making beautiful dresses that make women of every figure look and feel fabulous. Versace is going to have that dress featured in so much fashion media. Women with money who are not of traditional model figures will be more inclined to give Versace their money to look as good as Lizzo does. That is a fantastic investment that cannot be bought by traditional advertising alone.
We should hope that luxury brands–those that invest in and create actual luxury items, not made in China but assembled in Italy fakery–succeed and do not fall. They pay experts fair wages for their work and they create art. Forget wearable art like Zuhair Murad or G.V. or Valentino, designers like Guo Pei and Comme des Garcons runway are nigh on impossible to wear practically, but my gods are they worthy art to exist and be seen on people, even if one can never afford it.

As I don’t have ESP, I cannot know that you work in advertising when you have not stated it, especially if your commentary seems (to me, imo) ignorant of how these things work and help keep artistic industries alive.
And, no, Donatella did not sew Lizzo’s dress herself–the premier mains of the Versace atelier did, paid normal salaries at fair first world wages, not cents on the hour in terrible working conditions with cheap fabric like a $100 Zara made in China dress is.

Yes, she likes vintage and quirky fashion that isn’t always served by modern designers. And yet… she was dressed by and had her $10k (or is it $30k?) ticket paid for by Gucci at the Met Gala this past year? And Gucci gave her a dress for last year’s Grammy’s? And she’s been given dresses to wear by Vivienne Westwood, Monique Lhullier, and other designers for big award shows over the years? And she’s been sponsored by designers to wear their creations for the Met Gala for the last few years, because they know what spectacular advertising she is for their brands? How about that conversation?
It works like this: no one makes money off couture. There are rich people out there who pay for it and wear it; but no fashion house actually makes money off it. Couture is a very large marketing exercise. Designers show how high-level their brand is through the art of couture. Celebrities wear it and raise their profile. Then normal people buy small pieces of the brand like bags, belts, scarves, t-shirts, sunglasses, shoes, costume jewellery, perfume, makeup. Our perception of the luxury element of these brands is shaped mostly by the couture they produce which we are mostly exposed to via celebrities. We therefore pay more for that perceived luxury when we buy the smaller day-to-day items. Those smaller items sold to the masses are where all the profits lie for brands.

As soon asI saw ArianaI did a massive eyeroll. Didn’t she do this at The Met gala already? The princess gown and pose? It’s boring and unoriginal. Kind of like her. 🤷🏽♀️ And yes – Rihanna did it better.
Ariana looked good and I’m bummed she didn’t win anything, musically she had a great great year, but so did Billie Eilish and Lizzo – I love all three of them.

The absolute best comment I saw regarding Ariana’s dress was a picture of her sitting down in the dress with the caption “you’re really doing it, aren’t ya?” from Bridesmaids.
Rihanna’s dress sucked because it started right at her boobs. I like Ari’s better, although I could have done without the tiers. She sounded amazing during her performance though, so good for her.
I think Ariana looks better than Rihanna, it’s the best she’s ever looked on a red carpet actually. That dress is divine and the color is exquisite on her.
