Courteney Cox on Friends: we’ll get together for the first time to talk about the show

The cast of Friends has finally reached a deal to put together some sort of reunion show. Honestly, if there has to be a Friends anything, I would rather a reunion than a reboot or movie. Look, I loved the show and still watch the occasional rerun, but I don’t need that corpse reanimated. It ended, let it be. Truth be told, I’ll watch the reunion because I’m a Friends sycophant. I was worried, though, because the cast was asked so often about it, their answers started to sound like maybe there was some discord among them Fortunately, Courteney Cox assures us that’s not the case, and that they could not be more excited about the HBO special (it’s okay if you read that in a Chandler Bing voice, btw).

Courteney Cox is just as excited as the rest of us about the upcoming Friends reunion.

The actress often known as Monica Geller recently went hiking with Kevin Nealon for his webseries, Hiking with Kevin, and opened up about how rare it is to get the cast all together in a clip exclusive to E! News. Nealon asked about her ideal Friends reunion, and not only is it not one in front of a whole bunch of cameras, but it’s also one that recently happened.

“The ideal for me—and we just actually recently did this, and it took forever. I don’t know how many years it was, maybe 15 years—and we finally all got together and had dinner,” Cox said. “And when we get together, which is never—it only happened…it just doesn’t happen very often, like twice since we ended the show—it’s just the most fun. We laugh so hard.”

“So the exciting thing is that we’re all going to get together for the first time, in a room, and actually talk about the show, and it’s going to be on HBO Max, and I’m so excited. We’re going to have the best time. It’s going to be great,” she said. “But we really haven’t all done that and actually sat there and talked about and reminisced about this incredible experience that we had. It’s gonna be fantastic.”

[From E! News]

To clarify, Courteney is talking about the first time they have publicly gotten together to reflect on the show and what being on it was like since the show’s end. During their final season, the cast did a Bloopers/Behind the Scenes thing with Conan O’Brien, but the show had not ended yet. And in 2016, the cast, save for Matthew Perry, presented the Friends segment at the James Burrows tribute, where they reflected some, but just a few minutes. As I said, I’m happy this is the format they settled on. I think it will be interesting to hear their perspective now that so much time has passed. They’ve all come full circle from resenting only being acknowledged for their Friends character to embracing that role once again. The cast has found success outside the show, to varying degrees. So this really does sound like they want to come together out of a place of love for the show and not out of some corporate money-grab taking advantage of the current Friends-frenzy popularity. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely a money grab for everyone involved, but at least it’s a happy money grab.

Here is the clip of Courteney and Kevin Nealon. The part about the reunion happens at the 1:06 mark. She really does seem excited.

it definitely seems like they all hang out and still talk, but I would imagine it’s very hard to get all six of them together at any given point.

I probably won’t watch this. nothing about it appeals to me, and I feel like they’ve done so many interviews over the years where they’ve talked about friends that I just don’t really see what would be interesting about this. and I love friends!

  2. Mellie says:

I wanna hear all the dirt…especially things about some of the guest stars….I hope they tell all, but they probably won’t, it will probably be a love fest, which is fine too, just not as fun!

  3. Sierra says:

Nah waste of money all around. Unless they show some unseen footage, I am not interested.

  4. naomipaige99 says:

I have no plans on seeing this. The show was great in it’s day. I cannot believe there are still people out there we are really excited about this happening. Ugh!

  5. Lucy2 says:

I agree this is probably the best type of reunion, rather than a movie or more of the series. I’ll probably check it out at some point.

  6. Anilehcim says:

I was pretty young when this show was on, but I loved it at the time. I tried to rewatch as an adult and found the humor very dated and can’t get through an episode so I won’t be watching this. It seems silly to me that all they’re going to do is sit around and talk about the show. I wouldn’t be interested in seeing that from any shows I love that have ended. I guess I’m just a little surprised that people care this much that they’re so excited just to have these people in the same room together.

  7. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Maybe if they’d go back and re-act every episode word for word. I might watch THAT fiasco. Not if there’s a laugh track though.

  8. Esmom says:

Kevin Nealon’s hiking show is so cute! This is the first I’ve heard about it.

As for the reunion, I imagine the younger generation who didn’t see it in its first run might be more interested than us olders. I love watching panels and roundtables of casts of the shows I’m into. I just went into a Schitt’s Creek rabbit hole with that stuff and I just ate it up!

  9. Snazzy says:

I mean sure it’s a money grab but I don’t blame them. People have been clamouring for this for years, so ya, enjoy and get paid peeps! I’ll watch it, more so because I have this cultural FOMO than anything else.

has anyone seen David Schwimmer’s new comedy yet? I saw a trailer for it and it looks pretty funny

  10. ChillyWilly says:

Nancy Mckean auditioned for Monica? Wow, that would have been a very different show with other actors. They all had great chemistry. I’ll watch the reunion for sure. Friends wasn’t the best sitcom ever but it was pretty enjoyable and I watched every season and still watch reruns of I can’t sleep and it’s on.
Also, I want to go hiking! It’s 20 degrees and snowing in my hood today. So over winter.

  11. truth hurts says:

Do Jennifer and Courtney Cox live in the 90’s or not? These two should really move forward and let this show do what it does in syndication. They have a cult following but its not like everyone in the human race cares. Please go away. Courtney acts like its gonna reboot into a new show Jesus! Hunny bye!

  12. Michelle says:

Absolutely no point to this. They already done the reunion for the ‘all star tribute to James Burrows’ a few years ago. They discussed everything about the show. This new ‘reunion’ is only for the money & opportunities.

  13. Canadiangirl says:

I love the show and I love all of their Instagram accounts. Money grab or not, I can’t wait!

  14. MaryContrary says:

I hope Matthew Perry is okay. He is so funny and seems like a really sweet guy-but has had so many health issues over the years.

  15. Rashida says:

Even at it’s peak Friends was mere fluff. Don’t know why people think it still merits discussion all these years later.

  16. Normades says:

Courteney looks a lot more natural. I think the crows feet she and Matt are sporting look beautiful

  17. They all look great. I agree Courtney looks much better without fillers but she realized it years back and stopped.

  18. Soupie says:

That statement by Courtney was certainly stream of consciousness. Phew.
