Kourtney Kardashian isn’t shampooing her hair, she just runs water through it

kourtney khloe

Kourtney Kardashian might have kquit Keeping Up with the Kardashians, but she’s like her sisters during quarantine: still trying to provide some kind of content. That is how Kourtney and Khloe ended up doing a YouTube video together for Kourtney’s Poosh brand, which is just “Goop, but lazy.” There’s one part which is getting picked up widely: apparently, Kourtney has been experimenting with NOT shampooing her hair during the lockdown, even after a workout. Honestly, you can tell.

In a live video posted to YouTube on May 13 as part of Kourtney Kardashian’s “Wellness Wednesday” YouTube series, Kourt and sister Khloé Kardashian revealed how social distancing has impacted their routines and, well, let’s just say they’ve stopped washing their hair.

While the sisters have not quite stopped their hair washing for good, in the broadcast, they revealed they have not been washing their hair as frequently as before. “You’re turning into me with the hair touching, I just want you to know,” Khloé says at the beginning of the live video, to which Kourtney responds, “You know why? Because this is hair from just taking a shower and letting it dry and sleeping on it. I haven’t even brushed my hair today!” Kourtney that that she’s been washing her hair without shampoo after working out. Khloe said she does a full shampoo wash at the beginning of the week, and then dry shampoo for the rest of the week.

[From Teen Vogue]

I get that everyone now says that you shouldn’t shampoo your hair every day, and that it’s good to give your hair a break (especially during the lockdown) from treatments, dye, etc. I hear that, and I’ve found that it does feel like my dye job “lasts” longer when I’m not shampooing my hair constantly. But the most time I can ever go is 48 hours. Especially with workouts or walks or whatever – I would smell rank and I would feel gross. And honestly, Kourtney has nice hair and it looks like crap in this video. Just sayin’.

    Gross.
I workout so I gently wash my hair every other day with a soft shampoo and it is healthy. Water doesn’t wash and an unwashed scalp smell, no matter how you slice it.

  2. Joanna says:

That’s taking it too far imo. Nasty.

    • Adrianna says:

You don’t need shampoo every day but once a week seems like a good number. The rest of the time, co-washing with conditioner is okay. If you never use shampoo, your scalp will eventually get itchy from dead skin cells and oil building up on the scalp.

  3. STRIPE says:

Fine hair here. I have to wash my hair every day even if I don’t work out, or I can use dry shampoo day 2 IF i wear my hair up, even then it only lasts for 1/2 day.

God bless all of you who can go multiple days. I envy you!

    • CherHorowitz says:

My hair SO thick and dry that I can’t wash my hair any more than once a week otherwise it just gets even drier. I can’t use a hairdryer either on my hair really so again, have to wash less frequently as it takes ages to dry naturally. I could leave it a month before it actually got greasy (not that I would!) Ashamedly i do no exercise whatsoever so don’t have that issue of gross post workout hair!

      • jessamine says:

oh same! even with once a week gentle shampoo and *all* the conditioner my hair doesn’t de-frizz and look “nice” again until like day three post-wash.

    • ichsi says:

Same fine hair problems. I look like a rat drowned in grease if I don’t wash it every day and the whole dry shampoo story is a lie. I wish I wouldn’t have to do it and if I had hair that looked good after not washing it for a week (read: thick or curly hair) I wouldn’t wash it either. Alas I’m saddled with this cr*p. Plus point though is that a blowdry takes roughly 5 minutes.

    • Ellie says:

I’ve got fine/limp blonde hair but I trained myself out of daily washings. I used to be oily by the afternoon when washing every day. My head was overproducing oil as I was stripping it so frequently.

I got it out to washing 1x a week BUT that was when I was living for a year in France and the water was much ‘harder’. Back to Australia with its soft water and I usually wash 2x a week or maybe every 4 days. I use dry shampoo to keep it feeling and smelling fresh.

I find I get more time out of my hair (and have it looking good) if I’ve straightened or done some heat waves in my hair. The heat somehow lessens the oiliness.

    • February Pisces says:

I have very thick hair so I only wash it twice a week. It takes a good hour or so from wash to dry, so I’m glad I don’t have to do it everyday as it’s quite a job blow drying and straightening it. In lockdown I’m letting it dry naturally.

    • Heather says:

Fine hair, here too! I have to wash mine every other day. Wash day = nice style. Day 2 = ponytail.
In order to prevent having to wash it every day, I do two things:
1: I condition my hair BEFORE I wash it with shampoo.
2: At the end of my shower, I turn the tap to cool (not cold) and give my scalp a nice rinse to close the pores and slow down the grease-release!

  4. SomeChick says:

She probably has tons of product on it usually. Then, you have to shampoo it. Surely she takes multiple showers a day when they’re shooting, too.

I don’t shampoo every day. My hair is super dry and it would be like straw if I did that. I do rinse with water, and I do clean my scalp. I comb it with a fine tooth wooden comb (the smooth kind, with varnish) before bathing to remove tangles, any accumulated dust etc, then rinse well. I also have a little scalp scrubbie. It’s a small oval plastic scrubber with thick, soft “bristles” which reaches through the hair to clean the scalp. I wrecked my hair with extensions so I have to be gentle with it.

There is a whole “no poo” thing that some folks swear by. You keep your hair clean and wean off shampoo. A little coconut oil is nice every now and then, I think they allow that. IDK, I do shampoo, but not every single day.

And I do not smell! TYVM! (If I get sweaty, of course I wash it.)

Can’t believe I am commenting on Kourtney K’s hair. LOL.

    • Noodle says:

@somechick, the no-poo movement folks do use conditioner, though, instead of shampoo. Sometimes that conditioner cleans the scalp, because scalp buildup is one of the grosser outcomes of not washing hair. According to no-poo, It takes at least two weeks for your hair to adjust, and you will likely have two weeks of greasy grossness. I have curly hair (the type and texture most no-poo folks share) but I just can’t take the leap. I get too oily after just two days.

      • Deanna says:

I have curly hair, and haven’t used shampoo (or anything with sulfates) for two years. The first 2-3 weeks, I looked like a greaseball and my scalp felt itchy.

After that initial period, my hair has never felt better. I use my finger tips and scrub at my scalp with a conditioner.

      • Noodle says:

@Deanna, what conditioner do you use? I avoid sulfates too, but I still shampoo with Virtue Lab products (recommended by my hair gal). Is your hair curlier now, avoiding shampoo? I have a beautiful curl when it’s wet and humid, but if it’s dry outside, my hair just gets weird. I just don’t know how to keep it curly, apart from putting a ton of product in it, which I don’t like to do either.

  5. Erinn says:

Way better off just using a gentle every day kind of shampoo with good ingredients and washing at least occasionally. I get that you’re not supposed to over wash, but if you’re working out or just sweating from humidity/temp, you’re going to want to cleanse at least a bit.

If I wash on a Monday I’ll end up washing again by Wednesday evening or Thursday morning, depending on what I’ve done that week and assuming I have a decent dry shampoo. That’s the LONGEST I’ll go though unless I’ve gotten a fresh color – then I’ll try to wait a bit longer. But I’ll use one of my Briogeo or Verb shampoos and put a mask on the ends while I shave my legs and wash up.

It took a lot of effort to get my hair to the point where I could even skip one day. It’s definitely healthier in a lot of ways since I’ve done that – but if you’re not using a harsh shampoo I really doubt that washing it even every other day is going to hurt.

    • Ruby_Woo says:

Do you have any recommendations for gentle/good shampoos?

      • Erinn says:

I’ve really enjoyed Verb’s ghost line. I have really long, fine hair, and I find that gives it a boost without feeling like it’s heavy or oily. I also like Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind line – I’ve tried the Matcha and Apple one as well as the Banana one – I find the apple one is a bit more cleansing.

The shampoo that I used to kind of ease off of shampooing was Perfect Hair Day by Living Proof. I found after a while I didn’t really see the benefits continuing (I assume everything balanced and it just wasn’t giving me that ‘wow’ anymore), so I switched to the other ones I mentioned. But it did a great job at balancing the PH of my scalp, which I think helped a lot in terms of trying to shampoo less frequently. I think Treseme has a PH balancing shampoo now, too. I had used a Loreal EverPure shampoo too – which was formulated without sulfates I believe – which was gentle and I remember liking it. I just tend to get bored and like trying new stuff as far as my hair goes.

      • Beatz says:

Im not sure how she can stand it. I have to wash my hair everyday(using Ouai’s line). I also started using a detox shampoo once a week by Ouai. So far, I’m loving it!

  6. Mina_Esq says:

Given all the concerns about ‘rona droplets lingering in the air for hours, you’d think she would wash it more now 🤷‍♀️

    • February Pisces says:

That is what I’m thinking. I wash my hair twice a week so I base my errands around when I need to wash it. I feel more clean after its been washed if I’ve been outside.

  7. Ruby_Woo says:

My scalp gets way too greasy to risk not washing with shampoo, but my hair ends is actually very dry so I usually wash every other day (any longer and I turn into a grease ball).

I usually wear a shower cap the days I don’t want to wash my hair, but the odd times when I’ve just wet my hair, my hair does feel more conditioned and soft.

My friend is really into natural alternatives (some stuff is just plain crazy to me) and she’s also experimenting with not using shampoo this lockdown. I should ask her how it’s going…

  8. Rosa says:

I’ve been washing my hair a lot less during lockdown, and it’s in much better condition now. Many people swear that less shampoo is better for your hair in general. I’ve wanted to wean myself off it for a long time, but I only last a couple of days before I give in and wash it again so usually I’m stuck in that cycle. I think the idea is you have to get over the initial greasy phase, as in it initially gets worse before it gets better… if anyone has managed to go shampoo free and find it works for them pls let me know your method!

    • babsjohnson says:

A few years ago I believed the hype and I can say that it never gets better. You’ll get a smelly scalp and that’s about it. Choose carefully a gentle shampoo that won’t dry or clog your scalp, wash gently the scalp and not the lenght or ends and your hair will be more than okay.

    • Lucy2 says:

I haven’t been washing mine as frequently, I’ve gone from every other day to maybe every three or four. But it definitely starts to show it!
I think it really depends on one’s hair type, and activity.

  9. SJR says:

Nope, I have allergies and I shampoo almost daily.
After doing heavy yard work, gotta shampoo or I be sneezing like I get paid to sneeze.

I also can’t believe I am talking about any Kardashian….I should go do some laundry instead. 🙂

  10. runcmc says:

It really depends on your hair type! I have very dry, tightly curled hair (I’m Afro Latina) and I wash my hair once a week and have for basically my entire life. My hair doesn’t get greasy, unless it’s one of the odd moments I blow it out/straighten it.

However, Kourtney is using hair care for a totally different hair type and it does not suit her hair. Man, where will their appropriation end 😂

  11. Madelyn says:

I haven’t used shampoo in about 3 years, although I have curly hair. If I were still straightening it it would get greasy fast. Now I scrub and rinse with conditioner every three days and my hair is the healthiest it’s ever been.

    • Sarah says:

I’m about the same. This is the best my hair has ever looked or felt. It’s different for everybody and that’s okay!

  12. StellainNH says:

I have dry, curly hair. I wash my hair once or twice a week but every time I shower, I do condition it. Not for everyone, but it works for me.

  13. Sarah says:

Folks, it really depends on your hair texture…this comes up every post like this. Those of us with curly hair typically wash a lot less frequently and it’s not (and we’re not) “gross”. Thanks.

    • babsjohnson says:

Kourtney Kardashian doesn’t have curly hair though.

      • Sarah says:

The comments on this post aren’t exactly directed at Kourtney though…this happens every time there is a hair washing post. Words matter. Water washing only is perfectly acceptable for many hair types and water access. If speaking about your own hair, or hers specifically, be very clear.

    • Esp.Lumiere says:

Yeah, I can’t believe how defensive people are being about hair washing. I have really thick, wavy hair and I can’t be washing my hair every day. That would (a) be so much work and (b) would dry out my hair. I wash my hair twice a week. Its fine.

  14. Kay says:

Curly haired women do this. It’s not gross. Sweat is water soluble.

  15. Chaine says:

Sorry, I could only take about a minute or so of that awful affected voice, so I didn’t get to the shampoo part. Her hair looked fine to me, just not styled and blown out like we would normally see when she has some curated, photoshopped selfie or a paparazzi shot going to a chichi restaurant. And omg holy filters, Khloe!! Was that a person or a CGI creation?

    • Hoot says:

Really! It seems like Khloe has an awful case of wrinkle-phobia because her use of filters is so beyond …like Neverland level.

  16. ReginaGeorge says:

Nope. I have oily skin. I have to wash every 2-3 days and use lots of dry shampoo in between just to not have to blow out my hair regularly. (My hair takes eons to dry and wet, cold hair in the cooler months makes me physically sick, like headcold sick). If I don’t, I can literally smell the sebum coming off my scalp. Yuck.

If if ever rinse my hair without shampoo, it gets sticky, limp and all around gross looking.

Kourtney isn’t a curly girl and her hair texture isn’t the type that needs extra moisture, which is usually the type of hair that’s needs the “no-poo” routines. Maybe her hair is dry due to over styling and using hair products and shampoo/conditioners with silicone, which dry out your hair. If she just used more natural products and conditioned with natural oils, she’d be better off. I use jojoba on my ends, cuz I have a coconut oil protein sensitivity, and coconut oil turns my hair brittle.

  17. Yawnho says:

    Anyone use scalp oil?

  18. Mika says:

Curly girls do this all the goddamn time. We are not “nasty”.

That said… public service announcement: If you are using only co-wash exfoliate your scalp. Recently, a curly friend of mine recently had patchy hair issues from product build up on her scalp and it was not pretty! Now I wash with sulfate free, apple-cider vinegar based clarifying once a month, and exfoliate my scalp with a fine tooth comb. If you really don’t want the shampoo to touch your curls, put a coat of conditioner on your mid-length to ends before you lather just the scalp with shampoo. Curls are beautiful! I’d hate to see what happened to my friend happen to anyone else.

    • Ange says:

Yes! I just use conditioner and my hair is great and feels clean but you do need to clarify every so often. I would never use just water, the point of no poo is you scrub your scalp with less abrasive products, not that you don’t do it at all.

  19. Case says:

I can only go two days max without washing my hair. I have fairly fine hair, a very oily skin/scalp, and pesky psoriasis on top of that. It’s a mess.

I’m NOT talking about people with thick/curly hair when I said this (I mentioned this on another hair-related post and people with different hair types were mad — I’m sorry!), but I’ve known women with oily skin and fine hair who think they can pull off the infrequent shampooing thing, and it just…doesn’t look good, or clean. Maybe Kourtney has thick hair and it works for her, but I think some people with very different hair and skin types think anyone can do it, and I don’t really think that’s the case.

  20. Jaded says:

I work out almost every day and I’m a “sweater” so I rarely go more than 2 days without washing. However, I use a minute amount of shampoo, less than the size of a dime, and just concentrate on the roots. I do have to use much more conditioner, I have thick curly hair and that’s the only way I can “tame” it.

    • Ashley says:

Same. I focus on the roots and try to never let it go past my ends, I’ll keep my ends under water to ensure that shampoo doesn’t touch them.

  21. LunaSF says:

I accidentally went a week (I think, time has no meaning anymore) and my hair was pretty greasy but not awful. I don’t get super sweaty when I workout, no products and I live in the desert so it’s super dry here. Usually 3-4 days between washings is my max when I leave the house.

  22. Elle says:

I have a friend that she doesn’t wash her hair. I thought it wasn’t a big deal until we went on vacation together. She couldn’t smell it, but for me it was close to unbearable.

  23. Sugarskulls2000 says:

I have fine wavy hair so hear me out fine hair ones. A few years ago my hairdresser convinced me to stop washing my hair everyday. I thought my hair was breaking because of the grey. I’m 52 and about 100% grey at this point and the texture is a little different. I don’t dye it so can’t blame that, hair was just breaking all the time. I slowly weaned myself off washing with soap, first to every other day, then to every three days, and now once a week. I used a co-wash conditioner sometimes (Aveda makes a nice one) but basically I’m once a week. Two years in and my hair has never looked better, stopped breaking, I could actually grow it past my shoulders. I get compliments on my hair all the time. First thing I tell people is that it looks good ‘cause it’s dirty. People think it’s funny, but it’s true.

  24. David says:

Her hair looks lovely. Personally I think she looks great without the million products she must use for hair and make up when she is ON.
One’s personal care is not something I like to rag on because it is all so different for every person. My favorite beauty phrase is your mileage may vary because we all have to find what works for us and the beauty brands will never sell/tell it to us differently.
She is at least letting us know that she bathes!

  25. Ashley says:

I tired this once. After I lost my job I didn’t have to dress everyday so I decided to do vinegar? Or whatever the NoPoo thing is. I lasted 3, maybe 4 weeks before I couldn’t take it. My hair looked like crap. My friend told me he wanted to say something sooner but never did.

I am a person that has to wash their hair everyday or it greases. I can put it in a ponytail but you can see that it’s greasy. During the lockdown I’m doing every other day but the truth is, my hair will never take. It just greases so badly. I’ve tried shampoos for greasy hair, I’ve tried to wean it off, nothing works. I don’t have fine hair, it’s medium thick but you can just see how flat it is. I can try dry shampoo sometimes but it’s still greasy/ And worse I feel dirty. You know that meth trope about bugs crawling under your skin and the scratching? That’s me if I don’t bathe, much less wash my hair. OCD kicks into overdrive and I’m just clawing at myself because of how dirty I feel.
