Tristate area has 14-day quarantine for travelers from states with high rates

In our weekly CB zoom meeting last night we talked a lot about the pandemic and how stupid people are being in our respective states. Those of us in states with governors who aren’t dumb as rocks/Republicans have lower infection rates, but the states with governors kissing Trump’s ass (or sucking his D as someone put it, I’m not naming names) are having huge spikes. (Seven of the nine states Gov. Cuomo mentioned with high transmission rates have Republican governors to be exact.) Unfortunately it’s up to the states to regulate mask-wearing, social distancing and reopening since Trump is actively trying to kill people. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are not messing around. Governors Andrew Cuomo (NY), Phil Murphy (NJ) and Ned Lamont (CT), all Democrats, had a joint press conference making the announcement that all of their states will require a 14 day voluntary quarantine from states with transmission rates above 10 per every 100,000 people. (Here’s a link to an infographic with those statistics.) There’s a fine for people who don’t comply. You know that yokels aren’t going to do it, but it’s a start and we need more leadership like this.

Travelers headed to New York, New Jersey and Connecticut from states with spiking coronavirus cases, such as Florida and Texas, will be subject to a voluntary 14-day quarantine and steep fines if they don’t self-isolate.

“We worked very hard to get the viral transmission rate down. We don’t want to see it go up because a lot of people come into this region and they can literally bring the infection with them,” New York Gov. Cuomo said during a press conference with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, CNBC reported. “Because what happens in New York happens in New Jersey and happens in Connecticut.”

The travel advisory — which begins at midnight on Wednesday — applies to anyone coming from a state with a transmission rate above 10 per every 100,000 people on a seven-day rolling average. New York currently has an infection rate of 4.09.

“As of today, the states that are above that level are Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, Utah, Texas,” Cuomo said. “That’s as of today. The states themselves can change as the infection rate changes and we will update daily what states are above that infection rate.”

Travelers will be largely trusted to self-isolate on their own. Those who don’t voluntarily quarantine for 14 days will be subject to fines and a mandatory quarantine. The fines begin at $2,000 for the first violation, $5,000 for the second and up to $10,000 if they cause harm.

It is not immediately clear how individuals will be told this information upon arriving or how the state’s will be keeping track of travel records.

[From People]

People reports later in the article that New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are all seeing decreasing cases. That’s promising, especially after everything New Yorkers went through early in the pandemic. (I’ve lived New York and Connecticut and I miss being around more Democrats, but the cost of living is much higher than in the south where I live now.) I’m glad some governors are doing the right thing, because this is far from over. The more reckless and ignorant people are about it, the worse it’s going to get for all of us.

And Europe is probably going to ban US visitors as a result of our poor pandemic response. We’re going be global pariahs thanks to the covidiots.

    • Sojaschnitzel says:

Hello from europe. I think we should all ban each other, until we got this under control. My country is doing okay-ish but we have outbursts here aswell because greedy companies put their profits before the wellbeing of the employees, and some towns simply can’t get their numbers down, like mine. So my point is: having covidiots is not a US thing. It is everywhere.

      • Darla says:

Our president is one of the biggest idiots in the world though, so that hurts us. lol But yeah, you’re right.

    • Amelie says:

Well we can join Sweden I guess. There was a whole NYT article how Sweden’s coronavirus management of not going into lockdown has backfired majorly. Many countries around Europe, including their Scandinavian neighbors, are banning Swedish people from entering their borders this summer and Swedes are complaining of discrimination. This article in the NYT covered it pretty well: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/22/world/europe/sweden-coronavirus-pariah-scandinavia.html

      • Natters5 says:

I admire how Sweden was approaching this as a true experiment and reporting when it wasn’t working, however we can now say that the experiment is failing and they should start using more precautions in their society.

    • Veronica S. says:

I’m surprised they didn’t ban the UK, to be honest. Johnson’s handling of it is awful. Adjusted for actual population numbers, their death rate was actually higher than the United States. It won’t be until America’s numbers roughly double that we’ll catch up to the damage the UK did to its own citizens in a much shorter time frame.

    • Moxylady says:

Nj here. This is next to impossible to implement. Wtf. What is even the point of saying it. Like it’s nice and eveything and would be great if it worked but ….ugh

  2. AmyB says:

I live in NJ and I couldn’t be happier about this 🙂 I have had to listen to people bitch and moan about our strict Governor Murphy as been, listen to all the complaints about how terrible it is to wear a mask (seriously? Are you that selfish and narcissistic LOL), but I am more than happy our state has opened up slowly, still requires masks to go anywhere – and what do you know? Our numbers have literally leveled out! I am sure Gov. Cuomo will get tons of backlash for this, don’t care! This is called being responsible in the midst of this STILL DEADLY PANDEMIC. Didn’t go away Trump.

    • Darla says:

My brothers call him Emperor Cuomo, they hate him. But I love it, and I say keep it up Cuomo because I don’t want to backslide! California did!

    • lucy2 says:

OMG, the bitching and moaning from people here in NJ has made me insane. The good thing is when I do venture out, I see almost everyone with masks, taking it seriously, and all businesses are posting that they require masks.

For a while Florida had this same policy, if you came from NY/NJ you had to self quarantine for 14 days, so this is basically just the flip of that. I just hope a lot of the Florida snowbirds came back here before Florida got really bad.

    • DME says:

NJ here, too. I haven’t left my house, still, since March 13th except for food and gas. We are the second highest cases. Murphy has been excellent and people are still bitching. Trump is also bringing his shitshow to NJ next week, I believe. We don’t want him. We don’t want anyone who doesn’t wear masks. In my area, EVERYONE wears masks, unless outside running, etc. The big question is, how do we keep them out? It’s simply impossible. They’ll come to our state and we will spike right back up. You can bet none of the Trumpers will wear masks on their trips here.

      • AmyB says:

@DME – yes Trump is coming to NJ. This is his Administration’s response to the quarantine restriction:

        https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-won-t-follow-new-jersey-quarantine-order-he-s-n1232073

As in, he won’t quarantine (and I believe he is coming from AZ). He’s “not a civilian” so he won’t obey the order LMAO. Thanks A**HOLE!! And I also read, I believe, several of his staff have tested positive for Covid-19. What a comforting thought!

Who is voting for this lunatic again in November? Seriously???

      • Moxylady says:

Omg he’s coming here?!? What the f……. I absolutely adore the way our governor has handled this. Cuomo too. Science all the way. I can’t believe 45 is coming here.

  3. Becks1 says:

I wish our governor (MD) would do this. Our numbers are good, our hospitalizations are the lowest they’ve been in 83 days, etc – but I’m worried people are going to fly to Florida or wherever for vacation and come back and our numbers will spike again. The problem with our numbers being good is that people are convinced this was all a hoax and a power ploy from our governor (who is a Republican.) So they aren’t taking it seriously at this point.

    • Kkat says:

Omg I am sick of people here in California saying it was a hoax.
In my sister and my hospital the covid floors are still full

Just because we have a responsible and quick responding governor and people weren’t dying (yet) like in New York… Hoax! Conspiracy! Muh Rights!

  4. Kkat says:

I bet California is going to be on that list soon. Our numbers are going up fast.
I’m fully expecting our governor to shut us back down within the next month.
Our hospitals are filling up fast in Southern California.
I won’t be surprised if California closes our borders

I am so thankful Newsom is my governor, he has mandated statewide mask usage and I hear Disneyland isn’t going to be opening back up in July like they were wanting.

At my house we have been restocking stuff getting ready for another lock down. Looking on Amazon I can see it happening again certain medication and items are going out of stock and on others prices are going up.
In the same order it did the first time this happened.

    • Vava says:

My guess is Oregon will shut down too. We are stocking up here in our household getting ready. I think it’s inevitable. I know people who refuse to wear masks, are having gatherings, and are flying around for vacations trying to tell me there isn’t any risk.

  5. MerlinsMom1018 says:

I live in Texas. (NO. I did NOT vote for the idiot governor) I also live in a tourist destination area and it was off the charts insane on Father’s Day Weekend. Just nuts. It’s going to be that way well after Labor Day, I can promise.
abbott caved to the “my rights are being violated” crowd and as a result the covid cases are in the stratosphere. Now he’s trying to back pedal.
What really grinds my gears is that I am already self isolating because I have been exposed. AGAIN. I was exposed at my job before I retired (deli worker in a grocery) and take my obligation not to expose anyone else seriously, yet these bottom feeders are out there not giving a s*** about anybody else and they bring their kids along as well.
    I just can’t anymore

    • Scal says:

Fellow sane person that lives in Texas here.
Our county just had the highest number of single day cases ever yesterday and STILL people are yelling about demanding no gov’t mandate to wear a mask. “Just say home! I’m going to live my life” Rawr.
Meanwhile, you have the medical center in Houston that has almost 90% ICU capacity filled and I just can’t either. Houston has a mandate that businesses have to have people wear masks (simliar to no shirt, no shoes) which I guess Abbott decided was okay because something some free businesses to decide? And you STILL have people there not wearing masks because something something freedom.

      • MerlinsMom1018 says:

        @Scal
Nice to meet a fellow sane person.
Our local news channel gives a nightly update on our county and surrounding on # of new cases, age groups (Which this past weekend was the 20-29 year olds. Wonder why, what with the bars open and such…) As well as the number of deaths. It’s just so gruesome. Our hospitals are maxed out. But yeah, sure, let’s not violate people’s rights to have a good time.

  6. Mumbles says:

Good for them. For months the Northeast and other responsibly-run states have endured a lot of restrictions that have had monetary and intangible costs – but these states’ governors wisely weighed the costs and decided that in the long run, they were worth it for the health and safety of the people, and for the goal of managing this virus. Other states, run by cynics or idiots, decided to play politics. After all the sacrifices the Northeast has made these last few months, and just as these states are beginning to slowly emerge into something approaching normal (which is still months and months away), this virus flares up in the states that decided their divine right to eat at Hooters outweighed the public health. The responsible states have every right to protect themselves.

The worst is DeSantis. He has two Ivy League degrees. He has the intellectual capabilities to have a basic understanding of viruses and the means to minimize the havoc. Yet he sacrificed the health of his citizens as a cynical ploy to suck up to Trump and his magas.

When New York had high number of covid-19 cases, many residence were fleeing to the Hamptons and to their costal home in my little state of Rhode Island. Seeing this influx Governor Raimondo announced the implimentaion of a 14 day self quarintine two months ago. Cuomo said that this was “uneighborly” and that he’d sue. She unfortunately backed down and now low and behold.

I don’t care how well he’s done in governing this crisis, he is such a douche.

    • Darla says:

No, she said she was going to go house to house and drag New Yorkers out, that was quite different, sorry. Cuomo told her no you’re not, and the same day Trump threatened to enforce a federal quarantine on us (which would have to be done with the military) and Cuomo said, no you’re not. And this New Yorker approves.

A lotta people had a lot isht to say when NY was deep in it. A lot of comments made, some of them real dog whistles too. And not all of them were from Republicans.

      • Girl_ninja says:

She never threatened to drag anyone out of their homes. She wanted to watch for specific license plate from NY state and home addresses. She wanted authority to check to make sure these requirements were met. No one was being dragons of their homes.

      • Darla says:

“Rhode Island’s governor said Friday that law enforcement officers will knock on doors and stop cars to find New Yorkers”

CNN. Yeah, no, not happening. Go Cuomo!

      • Girl_ninja says:

        You poor thing.

Door knocking doesn’t equal dragging people out of their homes.

    • Natters5 says:

I’m in NYC in Manhattan and Only about 65% are wearing masks and forget about social distancing. Now that things are slowly opening up and require a mask I think more people are going to start wearing masks (I hope). I don’t understand why people don’t wear masks???

  8. Amelie says:

Lifelong tri-state area girl here (apart from college and a few years abroad after college) and I included Cuomo’s tweet about the travel advisory in my Instagram story last night basically begging people from other states who don’t wear masks/social distance to please stay away. We were hit hard first in the Northeast because NYC has 3 major airports (Laguardia, Newark and JFK and two of those are international) since our area was already a HUGE transit hub to begin with. NYC was always going to be one of the hardest hit areas. It’s the same for Seattle, LA, and San Francisco–all those cities have major international airports and are transit hubs too. Now that we’re healing, we don’t need to suffer more with more infected people from out of state taking up hospital beds, medical resources, and completely overwhelming our frontline workers. If you were planning on coming up for a vacation, go find some isolated cabin in the woods in your own state or something. Please, I’m begging you. Also if you were hoping to watch fireworks, many places in the tri-state have cancelled them this year so no need to come all the way up here to see them, you’ll be wasting your time.

So proud of Cuomo, Lamont, and Murphy. They have worked so hard to protect their constituents and they may not be perfect, but it’s refreshing to see politicians who care about what’s going on.

    • Vava says:

AMEN, sister. I live on the West Coast and agree with EVERYTHING you just said. You folks have been through enough, already.

  9. Veronica S. says:

The northeast has way too many big cities with high urban density crowded together to risk another major wave. Pennsylvania was frankly extremely lucky that Philadelphia didn’t turn into a massive outbreak given its wealthy disparity, size, and proximity to New York. We still lost roughly 6500 people across the state but thankfully shut down early enough and coordinated with others on the I95 corridor to keep it contained. I honestly won’t be surprised if Philadelphia or Pittsburgh consider a 14 day quarantine soon, too, considering the age of the population in this state.

    • lucy2 says:

I’m amazed Philadelphia didn’t fare worse too. I’m in New Jersey and watched it basically spread across the state from NYC, but I think the shutdown really put the breaks on it getting too bad in Philadelphia.

  10. ME says:

I hope Canada keeps our borders closed for a long time too. America, what the f*ck are you doing ???

    • DME says:

They should. Don’t let us in bc we have an administration that has bungled this so poorly. You don’t want us! Trust me.

    • Darla says:

Canada would be crazy to let us in. As would Mexico btw. They may build that wall themselves!

  11. 🤷‍♀️🙄 says:

It isn’t just the republican run states. I am from Washington so…… 🤷‍♀️ Inslee is a Democrat and a complete moron. There is enough blame to go around. Now go ahead with bitching me out because I disagreed with what you all said.
P.S. NOT saying Trump has helped this situation, or that there haven’t been republicans that have been idiots too, so don’t twist my words to fit your agenda in your response, I’m just saying that there is blame everywhere.
