Vanilla Ice is holding a show at a Texas bar where photos of the crowd went viral (update)

Update: Texas has closed bars and ordered restaurants to reduce capacity to 50%. It’s unclear how this will affect Vanilla Ice and this cover band’s concert plans.

Yesterday Hecate reported on Sammy Hagar saying he would volunteer as tribute to hold a concert for the sake of the economy or something. (One of our comments of the week is from that post! Hagar has since claimed that’s not what he meant. Yeah, right.) It didn’t make sense, and it made me think that he must have spent all his residuals and tequila money. Vanilla Ice, on the other hand, is definitely broke, right? He still has that house renovation show on the DIY network, The Vanilla Ice Project, but that stopped airing last year and I would bet production got sidelined due to the pandemic. Well Ice can still make money by performing that one song everyone knows. He lined up a concert on July 1st at a bar in Austin, Texas with tickets going for $25 to $300(?!). The bar is called Emerald Point Bar and Grill and look at the photo below. That’s from mid-May [via Austin Chronicle]. The manager explained it by claiming that’s no big deal because the band is outside and that’s 25% capacity, which was mandated back then. There are photos on their Instagram of the staff wearing masks, but none of the crowd in that photo has masks on and it all sounds dangerous. I got this story from Seriously OMG WTF and here’s part of their writeup.

Vanilla Ice announced yesterday that he will be playing a live gig in Austin, Texas, on July 3rd. Standing room only tickets are going for $25 and $40.

I could not confirm that this is standing room only, and the Eventbrite listing and Facebook page just say tickets will go fast, but it’s worrisome given the venue and how they don’t enforce social distancing or mask-wearing, which is still voluntary in Texas. Texas has a 10.42% positive rate, which is very high, and cases are spiking. Plus restaurants can now open at 75% capacity, with crowds of up to ten. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has “paused” reopening, but it doesn’t sound like that rolls anything back.

Hip Hop Hooray is an 80s and 90s cover band, and please don’t confuse them with Naughty by Nature, the band who did the song in ’92. Vanilla Ice did have an I Love the 90s Post-Game Concert scheduled with Naughty by Nature, Tone Loc and Rob Base in July after a Brewer’s Game but since MLB baseball is delayed it’s been scrapped. (The whole I Love the 90s Tour, with even more artists, is of course not happening this year.) Vanilla Ice is exactly who we thought he was.

Oh look at this Girl’s Night on May 29th. Happy Birthday Tammy!

Honestly looking at it from outside of the country it very much appears like these Americans don’t want to stop until half the country is dead. Yes the way Trump has handled the response is an unmitigated, egotistical disaster but there’s also absolutely no personal responsibility or accountability to be had on a grand scale at ALL.

    • Lozface says:

Totally agree. Watching from Australia, I am horrified on a daily basis. We are far from perfect, but have managed to contain the virus. Although, we have had a slight spike in my state (very disappointingly) with 20-30 new cases per day. The state is still in a state of emergency as a result. To see this partying and carrying on in the US is so scary.

An Australian friend of mine who lives in Dallas is completely brainwashed by the BS over there. She tried to tell me it’s not that bad and the news I see in Australia doesn’t show the truth. I absolutely lost it at her, for one we actually have access to US news via CNN, but at the end of the day the numbers say it all. We’ve had just over 100 deaths in Australia, and we are 1/13th of the US population. The difference in the number of cases and deaths is stark and frightening.

For all of you wonderful people, I sure hope commonsense will prevail eventually.

      • Mrs Robinson says:

It feels like people are living such different experiences as Americans. I have barely left my house for 100 days and haven’t seen my parents or any friends. And then there are these photos of people living as if the pandemic isn’t happening.

      • Jenn says:

@Mrs Robinson – Right??? Today is my 107th day at home. I recently made a hair appointment (temperature checks, everyone in PPE, everyone signing and dating, no waiting room), and then canceled it the very next morning, because I kept imagining people saying “why did she leave the house if she knew she was high-risk??” if I died. There are people who won’t wear a mask to save a life, so I guess that means I’ll live indoors for my foreseeable future. Good lord I need a haircut.

      • Lua says:

Dallas sucks, there’s the problem right there 😜 they actually are rolling back. Bars are back to carryout only and restaurants are back to 50 percent. Businesses are now also not allowed to allow customers in without masks, restaurants included. That’s in Houston.

      • abby says:

Oh–I have friends in Dallas too and they have completely drunk the crazy kool-aid, where science is not to be trusted. I have a hard time even talking to them now. These are normally rational people. The refrain seems to be that they don’t trust the government or the WHO, they are not afraid (geez–this isn’t about being “fearful”), and people will die from the virus any way and what extremes are we supposed to be taking to try to save one life. Seriously, I literally cried after I got off the phone with them last week.

      • Lozface says:

@Lua tell me about it. We visited her for three nights when we were in the US 2 years ago and we hated it! Her friends were the most racist, sexist a-holes! They were going on about drinking and driving after I said no one should be driving. They said ‘it doesn’t matter here. It’s the size of your cheque books that count.’ I couldn’t help myself and said ‘and the colour of your skin?.’ The response: we can’t help we are the kings. I was about to go off my head when my husband grabbed me and said we are only here for one more night, these guys have guns, let’s just get out of here alive. We absolutely loved every other city we visited: LA, SF, Boston, DC, NYC but Dallas really shocked us.

She’s been brainwashed by so many of the nuts too. So disappointing. She claims she’s not a Trump fan, but will still spew the Trump lines. If I hear it’s just the flu one more time I’ll scream. I did send here the stats on Flu deaths in the US v COVID-19. I didn’t get a response.

    • Dp says:

Watching tv coverage that sure seems that case and I am frustrated with my fellow Americans who are politicizing precautions, but please know that many of us have been secluded at home for months. I’m in the North East and have been home since March 13 and my city requires masks the minute you step off your property, with fines if you don’t.

      • Mel M says:

Yep, me too. It’s horrifying to watch so many people act as though nothing has happened or that it’s blown out of proportion, or comparing it to the flu. Do the ICUs get filled to capacity and overflow during the flu? Or is this just fake news? I don’t get it. If there were millions of confirmed cases and the hospitals were empty then I would see where people were getting this apathy from but that’s NOT the case. As an American I always knew Americans were ignorant about a lot of things but I had no idea just how many there were and how willing they were/are to ignore science and make up crazy conspiracy theories to fit their agenda and make them feel better.

We have been home since the first week of March and the only visitors we have had were my parents who we haven’t seen since feb. who came up a couple of weekends ago when their boarders opened and they had also not been anywhere in months and are retired. They are going to visit my dying grandmother in FL next week though so if they want to come visit again they will have to self isolate for 14 days before I will allow it. I also live in a red state that has all of those same “muh rights!” people and is still opening up and hardly anyone wearing masks in public. So I feel like we are not far behind AZ, TX, and CA.

      • Nikki* says:

I’m being extremely cautious in NC, so it’s driving me NUTS seeing mostly younger people throwing caution to the wind. The governor said people need to wear masks (starting at 5 pm today) statewide, but lots of people haven’t yet. UGH!!

    • Tiffany :) says:

The rugged individualism mythology that is so strong in the US will be our downfall. As soon as health precautions against a deadly virus were framed as attacks on “freedom” by the right-wing news media and the administration, it has prevented a lot of Americans from seeing them as safety measures.

      • Jenn says:

@Tiffany Such an excellent comment and observation. And that mythos is so deleterious when it becomes a political stance. The glorification of the lone survivalist, of the “renegade” or cowboy — the value our culture places on individual liberty rather than the wellbeing of the community — is exactly why we had zero remaining infrastructure to help people when it became clear we would be dealing with a pandemic.

    • Ashley says:

This post needs to be corrected because while Austin doesn’t require a face make, other parts of Texas do. We’ve had to wear face mask in San Antonio since lockdown started. Everyone wears them. You can’t go into stores without them. The Mayor made the mandate and that’s the bottom line. I do know people in Austin didn’t have to but the bars aren’t full like they always are, and staff in those places do wear face masks. Just because one county (Travis which is Austin) isn’t mandated to wear them, doesn’t mean ALL of Texas is. There are parts of Texas where you will be barred from anywhere without one. I even have to wear one at the gym which is so annoying because it’s so hot. But I wear it.

  2. Bettyrose says:

That one song everyone knows…and the best part is that it samples Under Pressure, by Queen/Bowie. A whole year of high school getting excited and then disappointed when a dj cued up the intro to that song.

    • Chelly says:

Exactly what I was thinking. Except it wasnt sampled, he was sued for stealing that song & yet he was still allowed to sing, perform, & profit off of it?? Years later & he still has no problem jumping on that stolen wagon

  3. Daisyfly says:

Covid cougars at the covid cantina thinking that vanilla ice virus is a seasoning for their boiled chicken is the reason we can’t have nice things.

  4. Piratewench says:

Half the country is participating in some kind of doomsday death experiment. They think their cockiness and surety in their own exceptionalism will somehow combat a pathogen. And besides that they seem to not value their own lives of health at all.

This is the long term result of science denial in the republican and southern culture. I’m in a state that is doing well with declining numbers, and we are following scientific practices. I don’t want to be tied to these a**hole states anymore. I don’t want my fate tied to any of this anymore.

The situation in Houston is going to be ten times worse than NYC, I fear. It’s like they learned absolutely nothing watching the whole world, and then American cities, go through huge outbreaks. It’s like they WILLFULLY have learned NOTHING. It’s infuriating.

    • BayTampaBay says:

From my understanding, most people in Texas think silver bullets won’t kill them.

      • Laura says:

I live in Austin, and I don’t want my fate tied to these guys either :/
I live alone and have been isolating except for still hanging out at one of our places with my bf, who has also been isolating. I found out he went to a bar yesterday. It seems kind of extreme to say “I can’t hang out with you for two weeks” but I feel like that might be what I need to do to protect my health.

      • Nicole says:

@Laura, my husband’s family is throwing him a surprise party tomorrow with a dj and everything. I spilled the beans to him, not to be mean, but to tell him he was going to need to find another place to stay for at least a week after. That means he will miss his son’s bday. It’s time for hard choices and I don’t feel a bit bad about it.

I’m in Texas and I feel like I’m surrounded by idiots. Our town (about 150 miles from Houston) JUST enacted a mask policy. Abbott is a f*ucking idiot and I don’t want to be tied to this disaster either.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

I live in Houston. I wear a mask and gloves on the rare occasions I must leave my house (my boss has ordered us to work from home indefinitely), and until the county mandated masks in businesses, most people looked at me like I was insane.

My anxiety is through the roof every day. These morons are killing people.

      • Scal says:

@bearcatlawyer I’m in a houston suburb And at least people in Harris county had leaders that took it seriously. Brazoria, Ft bend, Katy and Galveston were all *shrug*

I think Austin’s mayor also mandated that all businesses have to require masks which is really just passing the buck to have some poor retail teenager be a enforcer. Abbott should have let the cities in the triangle reopen slower and have different mandates than the country.

Texas medical center ICU hit capacity yesterday. They are in surge stage now-but that’s only 300 beds. There’s another 500 beds after that and that’s with people sharing rooms/vents etc. And that’s TOTAL icu capacity-not just covid. So good luck 4th of July with heart attacks, car wrecks etc. And still people were at HEB this morning without masks. It’s insanity. It’s scary.

      • BearcatLawyer says:

You stay safe, Scal. It feels very Darwinistic in southeast Texas right now.

      • Nicole says:

I’m in College Station and same here. There are far FEWER people wearing masks than there are wearing them. Finally our mayor enacted a mask policy last night after hitting over a 100 positive cases two days in a row. We are not a big city, people are just hell bent on not wearing masks.

      • Scal says:

@bearcat thanks you to! The number of people still saying it’s all a media hoax depresses me. The medical center is not the media-they are reporting on bed count. Sigh

Abbott just closed bars again and took restaurants back down to 50% capacity. To little to late bro-not going to change minds and attitudes now.

      • Bre says:

I live in Conroe and I pretty much hate everyone around here right now. I have an autoimmune disorder so I had to accept that I will not be able to leave my house until there is a vaccine or a good treatment. My husband works at a grocery store so he has to work. He wears a mask when he leaves the house but the people who come to the store don’t and will get mad if you ask. My own neighborhoods have proudly stated that they aren’t “mask wearers”. The selfishness of people is outrageous.

    • Miranda says:

Did you see the nutjobs at some sort of public meeting in Florida, who said that forcing them to wear masks was interfering with God’s plan and that the officials were in league with the devil? These people are selfish, irrational, and just plain f*cking stupid. As someone with a compromised immune system myself, who is still recovering from a relatively mild case of COVID-19 that I caught at the very start of this whole mess, I’m f*cking furious. I also have a 79-year-old father with a heart condition who has painstakingly managed to stay safe for now, but I’m terrified for him. We live in NYC and have already been through hell. My cousin/best friend is a physician’s assistant in TX who is expecting her first child, and she doesn’t really have the option of isolating without quitting her job. Do these assholes give a f*ck about the people who may need to save their lives? Sure as hell doesn’t look like it.

      • marmalazed says:

@SCAL Galveston leaders did take it seriously. The mayor of Galveston wanted the beaches closed and Gov Abbott ordered them open. Day trippers, primarily from Harris County, descended on the island. We’ve got one idiot County Judge, Mark Henry, who keeps saying he doesn’t have the authority to enact mask requirements even though more local leaders, especially in the city of Galveston, would like to. The Galveston County Local Health AuthorIty, Dr. Philip Keiser, is fantastic. Anyway, the biggest issue in Galveston County are the massive crowds coming in from out of town.

      • Joanna says:

Wow! I live in Fl, hadn’t heard! Where?

      • Miranda says:

@Joanna – It was in Palm Beach. My boyfriend and I first heard about it from a former coworker of his who still lives nearby. We were both like, “oh yeah, suuuuure,” because that sort of thinking sounds absolutely insane (even by FL standards!) and medieval, but then he sent a link to a clip on BBC News. I was so tempted to just take an Ambien and go back to bed.

      • Lizzie says:

It was a marvel of crazy and should be studied. I think there were 52 different people who spoke and they each had a unique crazy reason not to wear masks. One lady told the doctor to get educated.

I do think the anti mask wearing nuts feed off each other and I wish cable news would stop giving them a platform.

My family vacationed in FL last week. We kept to ourselves, went to the beach and pool. In Cocoa Beach it wasn’t too crowded and easy to social distance. The local pier required masks and a temperature check so we felt safe eating outdoors.

  5. Aang says:

I’m really glad Cuomo is forcing people returning from those states to isolate for 14 days.

    • ME says:

Yes but how will it actually be enforced? These morons don’t care about their own health so why would they care about anyone else? I don’t see any of these idiots isolating for 14 days.

      • Nikki* says:

My husband & I (who’ve been EXTREMELY cautious) had planned on going from NC to to our mom’s empty Adirondack home for a week in July. We only planned on swimming in the lake (distancing) and hiking (distancing) – so we aren’t sure what to do now. But what really disturbed me was friends saying “Rent a car w/NJ or NY plates; everyone’s gonna do that!” 🙁

  6. Lara says:

It’s not just people in the USA that are acting this way. I live in the U.K. and yesterday a mass incident had to be called because so many people went to the beach on the South Coast. The pictures of that make my blood boil. Rubbish collectors had to have security because people were attacking them. Who attacks someone picking up your rubbish?!?

    • Sarah says:

It’s a nightmare (although possibly a smaller nightmare than in the US. I read a quote from a woman commenting on the gridlock there who then said ‘maybe we’re part of the problem as we’ve come from Hertfordshire’. MAYBE??? GO HOME YOU FOOL

    • Bettyrose says:

All the service workers who have no choice but to work…in thankless roles, not being called heroes but legit risking their own lives for our conveniences…for their sake, if you have to option to stay home, make like Samuel L. Jackson and Stay TF at Home!

    • Lua says:

I saw that!!! I was shocked so many people went to the beach, saw how crowded it was, and still decided it was a good idea. I also chuckled at how polite you guys are over there to refer to it as an incident, here it would be much less polite phrasing 🤣

  7. Kealeen says:

    Tammy = Karen 2.0

    • Betsy says:

Based on the ages and apparent social classes of the “Karens,” “Tammy” or “Amy” has always seemed more accurate to me.

  8. MrsCova says:

From Texas here and I 💯 take this seriously however I can’t always get my extended family to see reason. People here are trying to have gatherings. Or feel the need to go to restaurants or bars and it’s sad and scary.

    • Also Ali says:

I’ve never been so thankful to live in a blue state but the south is going to kill us all. It’s horrifying to watch as the daily numbers keep going up and the governors do nothing!

      • Tiffany says:

Naw. blue states have plenty of stupid people.

        Plenty.

This ain’t all the south or red states.

      • lucy2 says:

I’m in NJ – blue and hard hit at the beginning, and there have been people here screaming and stamping their feet since the beginning. There’s stupid everywhere.

      • MaryContrary says:

I’m in CA, blue state, governor who shut us down early on-and we have had a huge uptick and it’s continuing to swing upwards. It’s absolutely horrible. A college friend of my husband’s is throwing a huge party for his kid’s 2nd birthday-he’s got a PhD in biology, his wife is an RN at a hospital in town-and they are not only breaking the no gatherings rule, they said masks are optional at the party. “Whatever you’re comfortable with.” If people like this can’t do the right thing, we’re doomed. Seriously.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Yes, CA”s numbers are going up because of in-home gatherings in May (graduation parties, Memorial Day, etc.). We also have conservative Orange County, where people have been protesting against the restrictions Newsom put in place earlier in the spring.

      • Kkat says:

People are stupid as shit in Southern California. I’m near Long Beach and SO MANY are all about Mah Rights! Conspiracy!

  9. Izzy says:

What I find amazing, aside from the sheer stupidity of these Covidiots, is the fact that this many people are interested in seeing Vanilla Ice perform.

    • whatWHAT? says:

      Izzy FTW! hahahahaha!

    • Chaine says:

Not only see him performing but RISK DEATH to do so!

    • ME says:

It’s probably because these people had a horrible time handling quarantine and now are desperate to get out of the house for any reason at all…even to see Vanilla Ice lol. These people are pure morons. Is this worth your damn life ??!!

  10. Sean says:

My sister is an ICU nurse. Before Covid-19, her unit saw 2-3 deaths per month. Since the pandemic, they’re now seeing 4-5 deaths a shift. She recently had a patient who tested positive tell her the whole pandemic is “overhyped” and nurses probably don’t know best. Someone else also told me politicians are purposely inflating the number of dead to politicize the virus.

Meanwhile, FEMA is projecting 200k dead by Halloween.

SMDH. It’s embarrassing and there’s nothing we can do about the stupidity of others. I’d say let the idiots do what they please and take their chances. However, it’s not just their health that’s at risk. They’re also endangering the lives of people who are trying to stay safe.

    • ME says:

I can’t even imagine the f*cking morons who will have their heads explode when Halloween is cancelled. I can see towns still going ahead with Halloween because it’s their “freedumb”.

  11. Leigh says:

Texan here. My town has been experiencing a surge in cases (of course, it’s Texas) we had 6 active cases 2 weeks ago, now at 80 active cases after a huge concert was held at a bar and the bartender tested positive. Employees at the water park have tested positive a week after they opened. Student athletes going to the summer training camp are testing positive. And more than half of our community refuses to wear a mask because they are drinking the republican kool aid. It’s about to be a disaster here, our hospital only has FOUR ventilators.

  12. Michel says:

People complain about Cuomo but he took care of NY.

    • ME says:

Yes he did…but let’s give the residents of NY a pat on the back for actually doing what was right ! They took that sh*t seriously, unlike other parts of the country.

    • Tiffany :) says:

On May 20th, the National Review wrote an article titled “Where Does [Florida Governor] Ron DeSantis Go to Get His Apology?”

We can see now why this premature victory celebration was horrifically off the mark. So many were boasting at that time about Texas and Florida doing the right thing for the economy, unlike scaredy cats CA and NY. Governors of Texas and Florida were so very, very wrong and now people are DYING because of their errors.

The arrogance of COVID-deniers is infuriating and dangerous.

      • H says:

I live in Florida, DeSantis is in idiot. We had 9,000 cases today. I’m leaving the Sunshine State for CO on Monday. I have asthma. I’m not dying because morons here won’t wear a mask.

    • Elizabeth says:

I have been seeing there have been multiple news stories on why California wasn’t hit even a tenth as hard as NY state, and what it boils down to is that Gavin Newsom shut things down nearly a week before Cuomo did and more extensively. It’s true NYC is far denser and uses public transportation more, but it’s also true NY leaders chose to wait and that had the disastrous results we’ve seen. I also don’t like how Cuomo has responded to police brutality protests and BLM.

  13. Joanna says:

I live in Florida and people are coming down here from Alabama, Texas, Georgia. I go out for groceries and gas and I’m one of the few wearing a mask. It’s not going to go away cause you ignore it. Driving by the beaches and Crab Island where I saw about 100 boats on the water, is mind blowing. They anchor their boats on Crab Island and party.

  14. Lisa says:

This is why we can’t have nice things.

  15. Scal says:

There’s one family in Dallas that had a birthday party last week and 18 members got infected. Grandma, grandpa and a aunt who is getting CHEMO is in the hospital (what was she thinking?) all because one family member had a cough and went golfing with all the guys and then a party.

I get it. I want to see my mom to-but it’s not safe. So many people here are acting like it’s over and we al know it’s not over.

    • jbones says:

      Celebitches,

      You are my people.

      In solidarity,

      JBones.

      • SomeChick says:

^^^^ Same same. Stay safe, JBones & all Celebitches!

This is one of the few sites where I enjoy reading the comments.

    • Christin says:

@Scal – I ran across that story yesterday and shared it with my boss, in hopes people will take this more seriously. The aunt taking chemo was sitting OUTSIDE to distance, and still ended up hospitalized! The elderly parents/grandparents ended up in hospital as well (the father/grandfather is in very serious condition). All for a 30th birthday party!

The Dallas-area birthday party illustrates how one person can exponentially infect dozens of others.

Do some people think they are invincible or what? How hard is it to just stay away from others, wear a mask, etc.?

  16. SKE says:

So thankful to be in VA where our leadership is actually taking this thing seriously and not jumping to pretend like everything is fine. We are now one of only about 10 states with dropping rates and those who’ve been able to work from home for the most part continue to do so. We will be able to virtual education in the fall as well. I don’t understand the desire to put yourself and everyone at risk for the sake of pretended normalcy.

  17. LaUnicaAngelina says:

I live in the West Texas region of the state and the sheer arrogance and stupidity of many living here is insane. My County had done well to keeps numbers low but this month, we’ve experienced an increase of infected. Even as this is happening, people still will not wear masks! Also, our governor is a joke. A Trump sycophant.

  18. LunaSF says:

Nearly all of my husband’s Texas relatives are acting like everything is normal, they are traveling, hanging out in groups and no masks in sight. Of course most of them are also extremely overweight, only eat junk and drink a ton so chances are not good for them if they get COVID. (Some, not all!) Texans really are a special kind who think they are invincible and this virus is some liberal stunt. It’s frustrating. We live in a neighboring state in a big tourist town and I see so many TX cars on vacation here. Luckily masks are required in my state and that has helped but it’s not enough.

    • Nicole says:

Seriously, I could have wrote this. Same here, husband’s family is living like nothing is going on.

  19. Storminateacup says:

Every country has got its share of morons. If you think this is bad half a million people went to a beach in Bournemouth (South East England) yesterday it was declared ‘A Major national incident’. Three men were also stabbed at the beach, England is just as bad.

  20. Dragonlady Sakura says:

If you pay $300 to say Vanilla Ice, you deserve what you get! Concertgoers please stay in your state and don’t travel.

  21. L says:

I’m in San Antonio and the amount of sheer stupidity and carelessness is astounding. Abbot announced today he’s closing the bars again but all that means is people will go back to throwing house parties. An old Co-worker of mine actually announced that she tested positive for covid (since our lockdown a few months ago she has posted herself going out to parties and bars almost every night) and 3 days later was BACK to going out, infecting probably god knows how many people.

    • Mindy_Dopple says:

You should report that coworker to the police or the CDC or to your company! They are putting lives at risk.

  22. Mindy_Dopple says:

Native Texas right here and recent Massachusetts transplant. I am horrified at my home state. Texans are notorious for their ‘TRY ME’ attitude but this is too much. I want to visit in August and ya’ll are making it really hard to justify the safety of said visit. My close family understands the gravity of the pandemic so I don’t worry about them but just the general safety of being in San Antonio and traveling even further south for my parents. Ugh, TEXAS GET IT TOGETHER. And Abbott can go to hell.

I’m in Dallas, and my area at least seems to be taking it seriously (2/3 of people are wearing masks). We’re isolating/only taLking to people outside from a distance. My bestie is outside Of Houston, her husband is immuno suppressed, and they’ve been the only people isolating or wearing a mask. She quit going to the gym in March, and now there’s an outbreak there.
We did a road trip recently, none of the small towns had a mask in sight. It’s going to be awful when they start getting sick, it’s going to be like wildfire.

I’m from southeast Texas and this reigning stupidity is the mindset of the majority of Texans, but please don’t think we are all this way. Some of us are evolved, actually believe science, and care about more than just ourselves. Texas, for the most part, is an embarrassment.

    • Jenn says:

I’m also from southeast Texas, and “this reigning stupidity” is putting it generously! It is so provincial there, so tribalist and nativist, so skeptical of “news from the outside world.” And God darn it, some of the most precious people in the world to me are absolute morons. It scares me so, so much for them.

  26. SndraDee says:

I’m in NC and our governor (D) has been trying to do the right thing (slow reopening, no bars or gyms, face masks required) and our lieutenant governor (R) is actually suing him because he wants everything open. We’ve also had ARMED PROTESTERS at the state capitol demanding everything be reopened. Sigh.

  27. ClaireB says:

I’m in Florida and just got presented with my county’s back to school plan for August. They are not delaying the start date of school and if we want to send our kids back in person, masks are only suggested, not required. They’re ignoring all the science and just crossing their fingers that the virus will just go away in the next month. Everyone around here is so willfully stupid, I just can’t stand it. My children are suffering being trapped at home with no socializing, so I’m torn about sending them back to school and isolating ourselves from parents/grandparents until there’s a vaccine.

  28. Christin says:

If we don’t learn from history, we repeat it. We have more scientific knowledge, astoundingly better technology and communications than 1918-19, yet leaders nor citizens aren’t on the same page to stop the virus spread.

I decided weeks ago that no matter what our “leaders” and others say, I’m staying as close to home as possible and wearing gloves and mask when venturing anywhere. Very few people in my area are wearing a mask, yet common sense dictates that the virus didn’t disappear because we want to have fun and do as we please People’s spoiled preferences are spreading it, plain and simple. A party, concert or pleasure trip is not a necessity.

    Stay safe, everyone.

What a moronic thing to say when the topic is the stupid and willful spread of a lethal disease.

  30. Pryor says:

I wouldn’t be caught DEAD at aVanilla Ice show. Please try to maintain some dignity, people.

I live in a Dallas burb and I am a high school teacher. You cannot believe how bad it is here. Gov Greg was barely stopped announcing the opening of schools, seeing that everything else is wide open. HS football players went back to practice and every district surrounding me has had players test positive. NO ONE is wearing a mask and the only thing he closed were bars – not houses of worship, not gyms, not places where large crowds meet. If a bar serves food with the drinks it can stay open. We also have a wealthy, white suburb, Colleyville, that has flat out REFUSED the mask suggestion/ordinance. We all call in Karenville now, and my hope is that all the anti maskers hang out there and Darwin takes over. The last 9 weeks of school almost killed me so I am quite happy to dig in the dirt and ignore these fools, but the numbers are rising and it’s terrifying.
