Trader Joe’s Karen threw a gigantic, screaming tantrum about wearing a mask

Here in Virginia, where CB and I live (separately), our Democratic governor has been calm and doctorly throughout the pandemic. We’re about to do a bigger reopen this week when Phase 3 comes into action, but I strongly suspect that Virginia will have to backtrack to Phase 2 within the next month anyway. My point is that if you’re lucky enough to have a Democratic governor, you probably have a lot of public safety rules and laws already being enforced, like masks whenever you go into a public space like a grocery store or a Starbucks. Even if that’s not the state law, most coffee shops, grocery stores and grocery chains are mandating masks for employees and customers.

So it is with Trader Joe’s. The Trader Joe’s in the San Fernando Valley reopened a few days ago. California is having a huge spike in coronavirus cases, so Gov. Newsom ordered everyone to wear masks in public again, and of course businesses are also following suit and not allowing customers to enter without a mask. Except that the Karens of the world are so used to feeling persecuted over NOTHING, they’ve truly made “masks” their cause du jour. As in, these dumbf–k Karens (around the country) have been arguing that wearing a mask infringes upon their civil rights to be dumb a–holes with a deadly virus. Which is how we got another Covid Karen. AKA Trader Joe’s Karen. AKA Maskless Karen. This is a multi-tweet thread and it builds beautifully. The guy’s commentary is priceless. Here is Chapter 1: Setting the scene in Trader Joe’s.

Chapter 2: The Escalation. Employees have finally convinced Covid Karen to GTFO and she slams down her basket like a toddler and screams “You f–king pigs! You’re f–king Democratic pigs! All of you! That man harassed me!”

Chapter 3: “I Have A Breathing Problem” Covid Karen screeches loudly, almost as if she doesn’t really have a breathing problem. She also thinks Trader Joe’s is somehow violating federal law by saying that she can’t shop within Trader Joe’s if she remains maskless. The opposite is true.

There was one more video where the guy filming this entire hissy fit was just like “we got it,” as in, he filmed the entire thing. It’s on record.

What’s really upsetting me is that Trader Joe’s Karen is not some lone lunatic. There are Karens and Chads around the country absolutely refusing to wear masks because they believe that the government or private businesses taking mild public safety precautions are somehow a massive violation of their rights. Plus, there’s the pseudoscience aspect too – I’ve watched those videos of Florida idiots claiming that “masks make you sick” or “masks will give you coronavirus.” For example:

    Are those eyebrows for real?

    • Restless Bitch Face says:

I was thinking the same thing! “But ma’am, your eyebrows…?” Maybe she’s dizzy from the sharpie fumes after sketching those bad bows on.

    • Mich says:

If they are, she had a brow lift and her surgeon was horrible. Brows are supposed to align with your orbital ridge, hers are way above. I don’t know if Botox can do the same thing.

    • AnnaKist says:

Ha! I had to go back and look! They are some heavy duty brows, alright. 😁

    • lola says:

She looks like the baby from the Adams family

    • EM says:

The Trader Joe lady did it all for a show. One of the responses deep down in the tweet is a first hand account: she was outside wore the mask to get in and staged the entire tantrum. Honestly that makes her look even worse if that’s possible.

      • Anne Call says:

Probably auditioning for a job at fox or OANN or starting a YouTube channel. You can see her checking at least once to make sure it still being filmed.

      • Poisonella says:

Got that vibe-especially at the end when the guy tells her he got it recorded- the crazy immediately drains from her face. The eyebrows are drawn on too.

      • holly hobby says:

Yep I read that. She also gave a TV interview on one of the local ABC channels. It popped up on the Facebook feed. First she won’t identify herself (no name) then she refused to talk about her “illness.”

All staged all fake. I’m surprise someone didn’t out her already.

There was also another crazy woman throwing a cartful of groceries out onto the supermarket floor. She was protesting too.

        All staged. All crisis actors.

    • Angel says:

Anybody remember in 2013 when a woman with her kid in a stroller FLIPPED OUT at a young black female employee at an Apple store in LA??? I wish that vid happened now, in this political/socal climate where Karen’/white entitlement/particularly at PoC has more visibility. I don’t think that woman was ever identified. Apparently it was a Vine (remember them??) taken by a woman in the store who decided to record as her tantrum escalated. Apparently she was so rude & entitled to this WoC young employee for TEN MINUTES before the lady who posted the Vine filmed. From an article where they interviewed the woman who shot the viral clip (won’t let me cp a link):

‘ “The woman was getting agitated and speaking in a rather aggressive tone with the staff member ten minutes before I began to film her,” Coleman recalls. Referring to her Vine, “That was the peak of her rant. It just so happened that I caught the seven second meltdown. “After her meltdown, she stared down the Apple Store staff member while the young lady gave her an explanation as to why she needed an appointment to be helped,” said Coleman. “The Apple Store representative was so calm, it was truly admirable. She was getting screamed at, stared down, and never raised her voice nor lost her cool.”

That’s bc BWoC are so used to this…and as usual, we see them tolerate it all with grace, when it’s women like that that dont deserve Anything (at least imo)

    • Nana says:

Peak early 80s Christina Onassisisis* brows in my book….

      *(very old Seinfeld joke)

  2. Lucy2 says:

If you have the lung capacity to yell, you can wear a damn mask.

    • Mia4s says:

Exactly. And if you have actual medical problems and your doctor advised you to walk around enclosed crowded spaces without a mask? Your doctor hates you….and if it is this woman I don’t blame him. 😒

Problems that would actually prevent wearing a mask are VERY rare; especially just a cloth one. A cousin of mine was having issues with light-headedness. Thankfully she has a very smart doctor who figured out right away it was triggering her claustrophobia (anxiety response, she was breathing too rapidly). My cousin practiced wearing it at home and had to do some mindful breathing exercises. She’s fine now, wears it no problem.

So in other words? Shut up Karen.

      • (TheOG) jan90067 says:

My dad is on 24hr oxygen. When he has his various therapists visiting, he has his cannula under a KN95 mask while they are here. When he goes outside in the common area corridors/atrium for a walk with his Phys. Therapist, he schleps the portable oxygen and he wears the mask. When he goes out to the dr., he wears the mask.

Let that sink in: 24 HOUR OXYGEN…if my 92 yr. old fragile dad can do it, with blood clots in his lungs and stage 2 congestive heart failure, SO CAN THESE F%^$ING MORON MAGAt KARENS AND KEVINS!

    • Izzy says:

I work with people who don’t have the lung capacity to yell and they can still wear a mask!

    • josephine says:

Read on a different site that she took the mask off as she entered the store. Note sure if that’s true, but if it is, it seems clear that she thought she was going to make some sort of point. The only point she made in my book is that she’s an entitled, spoiled, self-centered and stupid person.

All these people going insane about statutes and masks – truly the biggest snowflakes out there.

      • Snazzy says:

Yes I saw that too!! Plus she was in line but her basket was empty. She totally went in there just to make a scene. Karens have nothing else to do. I most certainly won’t feel sad if she gets sick. Also, Bebe needs to sue her

      • Esmom says:

“All these people going insane about statutes and masks – truly the biggest snowflakes out there.”

It’s really crazy what right wing propaganda has wrought — convincing people that these are actual grievances.

      • josephine says:

@esmom – I completely agree. They blow off human life like it’s meaningless, but by all means let’s protect those statutes and the right to breathe on people.

      • justwastingtime says:

I live in Socal (LA county) Trader Joe stores require a mask to enter. Period. There are people in front of the store (not typically small people BTW) who politely make sure everyone is masked and lined up six feet away from each other while you wait to enter as they also mandate the number of people in the stores. LA County has been under a mask order outdoors (except for exercising) and in all stores since April. This doesn’t make any sense to me that this is a new outrage. What I am seeing out here is a new sense since Memorial Day that this is all over and things are going back to normal and normal means I don’t have to wear a mask anymore.

      • Soupie says:

        @justwastingtime
Yeah I’m in LA County too and I went down to the dog beach in Long Beach last weekend and oh my gosh 0.5 to 1 out of 10 people were wearing a mask and it was really crowded.

    • Truthiness says:

Exactly! I have breathing issues at the moment and as I watched the clip I thought, holy $%#& I could not yell like that if I tried!

    • Green Eyes says:

I am on oxygen 24/7 and am not allowed to go out except for necessary tests and labs. I am also allergic to literally 99% of antibiotics out there & 100% to ones used to treat COVID. I have no immune system due to chemo meds (used for reasons other than cancer) and immunosuppressive drugs. Ventilators are also not an option for me.. been on them twice almost did not come off. My medical team and numerous other doctors have made us aware a ventilator is not an option for me. So any exposure for me is almost with certainty a death sentence (includes regular viruses). I say this because when idiots (including family & friends on line) tell me they can’t wear masks because of breathing problems or wearing masks causes carbon monoxide poisoning I will tell them my situation and tell them how ignorant they sound. I have worn masks in public for over 2 years now.. I have to. So if a person like me can wear a mask for sometimes 8-10 hrs when at the hospital or 24/7 when in the hospital. They can wear it for what time they are around others when in public. I call out the BS regarding those non mask theories and medical… I have been a patient much longer than I was a nurse and I refuse to listen to bs. That’s when they bring up their constitutional rights. That’s when I bring up.. well if God protects you and you don’t need a mask, well you don’t need a gun as God will protect you. That either shuts them up or I get deleted. Either way I’m ok.. it’s usually a friend or family member that I don’t or won’t ever see any way. Life is short and I’m on borrowed time.. no time for ignorance or people that do not value what life I have left or apparently can’t even value their own. Sadly I
Love in one of the reddest states and we are becoming a hot spot quick..and most do not wear masks. Thankfully my spouse, parents and close family does. Please Stay safe my fellow Celebitches… staff and readers. I do not comment often, but I read everyday and from the staff posts to all of your comments.. I thank you for always making me smile, laugh, and frankly at times feel like I belong. ❤️

      • Celebitchy says:

I’m sorry to hear that you’re dealing with that Green Eyes and hope that everyone around you stays safe. I’m so glad you read us and took the time to comment, it means a lot.

      • Ageonmaui says:

Thank you for taking the time to comment on this insanity.

      • Vava says:

Take care, Green Eyes. hugs to you.

      • Babz says:

Greeneyes, sending you all good wishes and prayers. Thank you for your strong words.

      • BnLurkN4eva says:

Had to delurk to say, I am sorry for your health issues and hope you stay safe during this pandemic. People complaining about wearing mask need to get over themselves and just put on the mask. It has literally become like donning a pair of gloves or jacket in the winter. Thanks for posting and I hope you are here for a long, long time to come.

      • Sparky says:

I second all the good wishes posted already. With respect to BnLurkN— here in SoCal we typically don’t have to check the weather to determine what we wear. Masks have been required for months now in LA County so to me it’s something I do without thinking much like putting on my seat belt which is ALSO mandated by the government

      • Some chick says:

You do belong. Thank you for saying all of this.

      • Carmen says:

I’ve been missing you on here. Big hug. Stay safe and take care of yourself.

      • Green Eyes says:

Thank you so so very much Kaiser, AGEONMAUI, Varva, Baby, Bnlurkn4eva (I so love your name), Sparky, and Some Chick. You have all really made my day even more special. Huge hugs to all of you. ❤️

      • Prayer Warrior says:

My problem with the mask is glasses fogging…I have tripped a couple of times and almost took some poor lady down whilst attempting to rescue myself (we’re fine). I’ve done the dishwashing soap thing…today had someone recommend coating my glasses with shaving cream. Gonna do that tonight. The cloth masks are better than the paper ones. Either way, fogging notwithstanding I WEAR A MASK. I care deeply about the people around me…clients, neighbours, my community. I will INSIST you don’t come too close; am down to 4′ versus 6′, but still, please keep your distance. Because yes, masks are a pain. For sure. But so is have tubes and the like shoved up your nose/down your throat whilst lying on your belly for days and weeks and for some, months. So Honey, take a seat and close your yap, please.

      • Prayer Warrior says:

Ah, Green Eyes, your perspective is EVERYTHING. Thank you for sharing your story

      • Lady D says:

So glad to hear from you Green Eyes. I think about you and your 4-legged clan often, and hope you are all doing well. I’m currently trying to add an abandoned bunny to mine.

      • Nana says:

Thanks for putting it so elequently Green Eyes, the very simple reason why we should all be wearing masks – because even if we’re not showing any symptoms we may still spread Covid, so by masking up, we’re thinking about people other than ourselves.

    • Mustang Sally says:

Um….and if she has a breathing problem, wouldn’t she be considered high risked and be more likely to need a mask? Dear Lord.

  3. Teresa says:

This is truly no different than no shirt no service. It’s an article of clothing. Why is this the hill so many are choosing to die on / kill others? The stupidity of this country is very demoralizing.

    • tempest prognosticator says:

I agree 100%. The level of stupidity in this country is demoralizing. There are way more stupid people out there than I ever thought possible, and I thought the 2016 election was an eye-opener. We’re surrounded.

      • SomeChick says:

I hate to say it, but 50% of everything is below average. These Karens and Kevins… it’s pretty obvious which side of the line they are on.

    • shanaynay says:

I personally think most of these dopes are only following their idiotic leader DT.

      • North of Boston says:

Which, again, means that the level of stupidity in this country is demoralizing. Because only the stupid would choose to follow Donald Trump’s lead.

The stupidity and meanspiritedness of these people is mind boggling.

    • Donn says:

I loved someone’s response somwhere that said what’s going to happen when these people realize we all wear seatbelts.

      • Esmom says:

I know, right? Although I remember how worked up people were about that in my state when the seat belt law was first proposed. I wrote a newspaper editorial in high school in favor of the law — even as a teen I knew people were stubborn idiots! People are just selfish fools.

    • Truthiness says:

Some Covidiot whose name rhymes with dump politicized wearing a mask. Some of the locals near me are calling themselves patriots and then claim it is unconstitutional. I have to swear off the Next Door app because the idiocy is too rampant.

    • Suz says:

Our current “leader” in the US is a giant toddler and these dumb asses are following their leader.

  4. Michael says:

As a practical matter these people are showing their ass to the whole world. Employers see this; friends and relatives see this. Is it worth it to try and swim upstream when you are clearly in the wromg?.

  5. C-Shell says:

The kicker to this story is that Bebe Karen stood in line —wearing a mask — for 30 minutes to get into TJ’s, whereupon she took *off* her mask and threw this highly staged and performative tantrum. She wanted to go viral, bless her heart, and she did.

    • AnnaKist says:

I wondered about that, C-Shell. Is the person who videoed this in on it, do you think, or was he/she just in the right place at the right time? Karen’s like a banshee.

    • wildwaffles says:

My first thought at brief glance was she looked very made up and camera ready. Then I read about her waiting in line wearing a mask and this all seems very performative and planned. Still makes her a Screeching Karen.

    • GuestWho says:

Yeah, her empty basket was a tell…these crisis actors are tiresome.

    • pottymouth pup says:

she also walked around the store getting close to people trying to instigate a shopper to tell her off and then walked over to staff. If she had a “breathing problem” she wouldn’t have been able to stomp around screaming like this w/o getting winded – also, if she had an actual respiratory diagnosis for which her physician had told her not to mask up, she would have said what her “breathing problem” is. A child or someone without the ability to understand the basics of a diagnosis would call it a breathing problem, and adult would be able to articulate better if they weren’t making bullshit up like this woman

    • Esmom says:

But why…what is the end game? To become some hero of the MAGA crowd?

      • halfpint says:

Perhaps the end game is to show how f-ing stupid this group of non-mask wearing, conspiracy theory folks are? I know – wishful thinking. :/

      • Kriseth says:

It’s the possibility of getting that GoFundMe money. MAGATs will contribute to anyone who looks like a martyr for them.

    • JC says:

This was also the day that this Trader Joe’s had its grand opening. It was a big deal as it was the first TJ’s to open in the Valley in 13 years. So I believe the story that she waited in line with a mask as TJ’s employees go up and down the line checking for masks. There had to have been a line for the grand opening day in North Hollywood.

    • ravynrobyn says:

      @ C-SHELL-if I knew I were going viral, I’d wear a better bra 🙄

    • L4frimaire says:

Someone tweeted this that she staged this whole thing. It seems she did this deliberately and was forcing a confrontation. So she was in line wearing a mask before going into the store to mess with people. I don’t understand these people and who supports this ignorance.

    • Winnie Cooper's Mom says:

All that planning and staging… and she chooses to wear a top that went out of fashion about 20 years ago? Surely she could have worn something better than that for her big moment.

  6. Kiara says:

I went to Trader Joe’s last week and it was filled with Karen’s like this. I was with my six year old (who was wearing a mask too even though legally she doesn’t have to). The Karen behind us in line kept insisting on getting very close despite the floor signs. She wasn’t wearing a mask and had such an attitude about it, you know it wasn’t for health reasons. The poor employees twice had to ask her to step away from me and my daughter, but she just had to make a point. People are out of their minds right now. You can just feel the anger in the air. It makes me scared to go out. I am in Virginia, btw

    • Prayer Warrior says:

I’ve started carrying my 4′ walking stick (usually reserved for forest walks to help me with balance) on city walks (grocery store, bank, etc) so I can claim the space around me; here in BC Canada 90% of folks are polite and courteous and respectful. I’d have been so tempted to give her a good solid poke (the tip is rubberized): “Hey! You’re too close to me! Back off”
Sometimes the amount of anger I carry around with me scares me and I’m afraid if I went off on someone, I’d regret it almost as much as they would.

      • schmootc says:

Back when it was just three feet, I thought about just taking a yardstick with me when I left the house. Seems like a smart thing to do, because it’s super clear when someone is too close.

  7. Also Ali says:

There is another post on twitter from someone else who was there who said the Karen wore a mask in line outside the store to get inside, then took off the mask and wandered around the store with an empty shopping basket until someone finally told her to put a mask on and then she freaked out. It was a staged scene designed to go viral.

    • Mich says:

To what gain? She comes off looking like a fool. They always do. Was this supposed to be some kind of gotcha moment for everyone else? I would ask if she is really that stupid but I’ve seen the video and know that she is.

      • Swack says:

Too bad there isn’t video of her wearing g the mask outside.

      • josephine says:

Are some of these people thinking that they’ll get sympathy and attention from those far-right crazies? That she’ll get interviewed by Fox News and that someone will start a fund for her? I think that’s what that hairdresser somewhere in Texas (or maybe Virgina?) did? “Protested” so that she could start some huge fund for herself even though she was getting money from the feds for her closed salon.

  8. Becks1 says:

Someone tweeted that they were in line with her, waiting to get in, and she wore a mask the entire time. So she had one, could wear one, and just refused to wear it for the purpose of “taking a stand” or something. Like I said on twitter, she needs to find a hobby.

    • Becks1 says:

LOL I love how we all saw the same thing about her wearing a mask outside.

    • Nic919 says:

Clearly she was looking for attention. But at least she wasn’t refusing to wear a mask near immunocompromised kids.

  9. Eleonor says:

I had a lot of dicussions about this.
The virus is still around, people are still dying so we have to be careful.
If you don’t wear a mask the small shops owner can have a problem, because after months of lockdown probably they cannot affort an amend. If you want to support the economy you must be respectful. I don’t wear a mask in the street when I am alone, but I always have one to enter in public spaces: shops, restaurants.

  10. lola says:

A guy called me the c-word when I told him to cover his nose at a bakery recently. He did it, but he was pissed af.

Question: Do you have to pay a fine in California/ US if you don’t follow the covid rules?

    • sealit says:

@lola There is a $1000 fine or 90 days in jail in WA for not wearing a mask in public. But then we have sheriffs going on the news and proclaiming they will not enforce the law and calling everyone sheeple for following the rules. Who raised these people to have such little regard for other people? That goes for the guy who called you a C. Seriously? I’m half Asian and it’s getting to the point that I’m nervous to go out with my young son with my husband deployed and unable to run interference. We had a man spitting on Asians in Seattle. My husband will be picking me up from jail if someone spits on my son.

      • Lady D says:

The sherriffs can’t be fired for contradicting what the higher-up authorities are mandating? They’re being insubordinate aren’t they? Fire their dumb asses.

      • nicegirl says:

@SEALIT I’m nearby in PDX and good for bail if that goes down. These people, i swear.

      • lola says:

        @sealit
Thank you for your answer! I’ve been wondering if there were no fines, because in my country (most) people follow the rules because it could get very expensive if you get caught. But wow about those sheriffs! Some people are really….something.

And I hope that you and your son stay safe and healthy!

      • sealit says:

@ladyd There are sheriffs from 5 counties at last count openly defying Gov. Inslee. One in Snohomish is fighting recall.
@lola and @nicegirl Thank you! My husband only half chuckled at the idea of jail because he knows he’d really have to be flown home to come get me.

      • Prayer Warrior says:

        I’ll send you bail money

      • schmootc says:

Spitting on Asians? For crying out loud, what is WRONG with people? I just don’t understand. At all.

    • Oddsnends says:

It depends where you live. I’m in a small town in Arizona so each mayor makes the call to mask or not. We mask. It’s a misdemeanor and a fine (not sure how much, don’t intend to ever be ticketed) if you’re inside and not masked according to the establishment’s rules. If you’re outside you don’t need a mask unless you’re within six feet of a non household member. So far we have 6 deaths in the county of 120000+. There are a lot of retirees who live here.

ETA. Sorry. This post was meant to follow someone asking if there were any consequences to not masking in the U.S.

      • lola says:

Good to know. I was actually confused because I see so many Americans not wearing masks on SM and the news and I was like ???

    • Jenn says:

There are fines in San Francisco County. I know the San Mateo County supervisor has asked Governor Newsom to institute the exact same fines here for not wearing a mask — it was a big news story four days ago. First offense would be a warning, second offense would be a $100 fine, third offense $500. The supervisor wants it instituted all over the state of California, actually, so that there’s some consistency and uniformity. Hopefully the governor agrees.

  11. Kaiser says:

I totally believe that some (not all, but some) of these morons really are crisis actors. Some of what they’re saying and doing is just too coordinated. This woman may be part of it, but it’s still good to shame these people.

    • Kealeen says:

Agreed…something about this almost seems like terrible performance art, and those eyebrows almost look like they’ve covering up her real eyebrows.

    • ChillyWilly says:

      I think you’re right, Kaiser.

    • Purplehazeforever says:

Yes, I think some of them are crisis actors too or its a coordinated stunt to see if they are allowed to shop in the store without a mask one day & then are not the next day. I have a few nuts on FB who want to sue states & businesses alike for the mask policy. So this might be why this is going on.

    • pottymouth pup says:

someone identified her on twitter – her name is Sandrella Zakidian and she’s a 43yo Licensed Esthetician. Since being identified yesterday, she’s changed her name on FB to Ella Yan, made the pictures of herself and most of her heinous posts private (they were public yesterday when I saw her outed and checked FB) my guess is she realizes that her behavior will impact her ability to work and that’s why she’s trying to make sure her stunt doesn’t track back to her now

      • Winnie Cooper's Mom says:

I pulled up her FB page that you linked. Although her photos that are public are not of her, the memes she has posted explain everything we need to know about her. She is INSANE!! Omg I feel sorry for any person who has to deal with her on a regular basis.

      • ClaraBelle says:

That’s something I find confounding…..I think every “Karen” whose behavior was caught on a video that became viral….they almost always lose their jobs and/or sponsors. And often they had surprisingly good professional jobs. These people are doubly stupid if they don’t know that they will probably also be fired as a result of their public and recorded outbursts.

      • The Other Katherine says:

An esthetician drew *those* eyebrows on herself? Jeeeez.

      • holly hobby says:

@Other Katherine. That’s my thought too. If that’s a sample of her work, she should have her license taken away. Those brows are scarey.

Again, to those special protestors, is it worth it to destroy your livelihood for the sake of challenging the law? I’d say it’s not.

    • Jaded says:

You’re right Kaiser – they’re funded by some far right PACS who also send in armed rabble-rousers to otherwise peaceful BLM protests.

  12. ChillyWilly says:

On my. The Trader Joes woman is definitely a Karen who went in there looking to make a scene. That woman in Florida is certifiably insane.

  13. Aims says:

I was at my local store and this guy behind me was going on about how wearing a mask was a violation to his civil rights. He was talking all sorts of BS. Normally I roll me eyes and go on with my day. His entitlement really rubbed me wrong. So I turned to him and said, “It’s against my civil rights when your ignorance gets me sick.” He got quite. These people are a bunch of aholes.

  14. Kealeen says:

The bedazzled Bebe t-shirt is the chef’s kiss on all of this.

    • Lauren says:

The Bebe shirt says it all, lol

    • Chaine says:

When you see someone wearing that tshirt, you know they live to turn on the drama.

    • ODIE says:

If this was a staged performance, it is an unfortunate costume choice. Maybe she was like “I’ll wear my diamonds!” I don’t know…she seems REALLY angry. The way she threw that basket seemed like a genuine toddler tantrum.

  15. Bananas says:

Your doctor telling you to not wear a mask is your doctor’s passive aggressive way of telling you she hopes to never ever see you again. Can’t imagine why.

  16. Leah says:

You know Karen, you aren’t entitled to shop anywhere you want by your own rules. Most TJ’s have mask policies and the two I’ve been shopping at in the last several months require masks, six foot distance and they don’t allow everyone in the store all at once.

    So tired of Karens.

  17. Léna says:

It’s just a mask ? Why do they take “American freedom” a bit too far lol just wear the mask, you’ll be fine. Maybe sweat a little (a lot) like me on the nose and on the upper lip but damn it, it’s just a mask !!!

  18. MellyMel says:

Says she has a “breathing problem”, as she is screaming at the top of her LUNGS! You can’t make this crap up lol!

    • Jaded says:

Imagine this. She’s apparently an esthetician. She works up close and personal with people and shares their breathing space. She catches the virus from one of her clients then goes into Trader Joe’s to have a screaming rant, thereby spreading the virus all over the place. There’s a special place in hell for people like that and as a firm believer in “what goes around comes around”, I know she’s going to pay a big price for doing this. Karma will hunt her down and bitch-slap her a good one.

      • Nic919 says:

Did you hear about the outbreak that happened at a nail salon in Kingston Ontario? So far 18 positive cases in a town that has no new cases for weeks. They are blaming the visitors who came by bus from Toronto but the fact they weren’t using PPE properly.

Don’t ask me why someone would travel over 3 hours for nails when Toronto started to reopen a few weeks later for that too.

  19. Kealeen says:

She’s probably related to the a-hole who took a picture of and tried to shame Geoffrey Owens (Elvin from The Cosby Show) for working at a Trader Joe’s.

  20. Darla says:

all those mask-wearing people she is screaming at are now at risk. the louder you talk the more risk there is you are spitting covid at people. Seriously, that’s true. So to me, this is attempted murder and I am prepared to treat it as such. I have my pepper spray AND a personal taser, ready for these b*tches. you come near me maskless and screaming, you will spend at least 5 minutes on the floor trying to rip your burning eyeballs out of your face, and that is the least that will happen to you. Get serious with these nutters. until we do, they will go around killing people. I’m just waiting. I’m juuuuuust waitin. Please, do it to me.

    • Lady D says:

LOL. You deserve a Took One For The Team plaque, Darla. I really hope you get the chance to release some frustration. We’ll all be cheering you on and donating to your legal fund:)

  21. Ferdinand says:

There was a another Karen yelling at a Starbucks barista in San Diego. She wasn’t wearing a mask, so the barista told her it was the company’s policy to Not serve people without masks. She threw a tantrum and she herself recorded the situation and put it online thinking people would take her side.

Long story short, a man set up a go fund me page for tipping the barista, the campaign has collected over 60 thousand dollars and Karen girl made a fool of herself. I love happy endings!

    • ravynrobyn says:

@Ferdinand-yeah, that beesh actually thinks she’s entitled to some of that poor barista’s $$$ and is threatening to sue him.

Dear God, what is this world coming to?!?!?

  22. Bettyrose says:

    What do Karens want???

    • Sarah says:

      To speak to the manager.

But seriously…these are folks with an outrageous sense of entitlement coupled with poor emotional intelligence, living in a society that caters to them and they feel that unearned privilege slipping away. Hysteria ensues.

    • MissMarierose says:

The same thing every toddler wants.

    • Yup, Me says:

Amanda Seales has a great bit in her HBO Special “I Be Knowin'” about how EVERYONE has been trained to take care of and protect white women (and also women who happen to be white) and that it means there are some resiliency capacities that do not develop as a result. I highly recommend checking it out.

Karens want to be taken care of and for their wants and whims to be indulged, just as they have been taught the world is meant to do for them.

    • Jaded says:

Karens know they’re losing their special white privilege snowflake status fast. They’re tilting at windmills and becoming the object of society’s derision and scorn, and they’re trying to fight back. But in this day and age of camera phones, childish tantrums and specious, self-pitying explanations don’t work. The ‘Age of Karen’ is coming to a close and not a day too soon IMHO.

  23. AMM says:

I’m in VA too. I haven’t seen anyone outright refuse to wear a mask, but I’ve seen tons of people just pulling it down to their chins while they shop. It drives me nuts. Especially somewhere like quick like WaWa. You really can’t wear it over your mouth and nose for 3 minutes?

  24. Ms. says:

I can’t believe people are being gigantic babies about this.

Wear the stupid mask because if there is even a chance it helps (which we know it does: Austria is a good case example) we should. Some people are so short sighted that don’t see how this is going to go on forever due to their stupidity.

    • shanaynay says:

They are being babies, because they are following in the POS in office who is the biggest baby Huey around. I think these idiots and racists are being brainwashed by him.

  25. Lanie says:

    Bebe?

Aging, entitled sorority girls are sad.
    She married a feckless Chad.
    Her life is unhappy.
    That’s why she’s so crappy.

    • ravynrobyn says:

      LOVE this 🤣👏🤗💕🤸‍♀️🤸‍♂️🎶💃

      May I add:
So she wants everyone else to feel bad.

I’m jotting your poem in my memorable quotes journal cuz it makes me giggle at their moronic stupidity (instead of rage stroking).

      • Anners says:

This Karen limerick is giving me life! Thanks for finding the funny in a head scratchingly weird situation 🤣🤣🤣

    • bettyrose says:

I think you’re right. Amy Cooper got me thinking about this. She was rich & successful, living in Manhattan, why is she so angry at the world? Then I realized she works in an industry full of Chads, alpha males, stealing ideas, making sexist jokes, and dating twentysomethings. I loathe the trope of the bitter single woman who chose career, but I think there are a lot of Karens who feel entitled to nothing less than a Chad, and the Chads are complete douchebags.

  26. aquarius64 says:

When they do these stunts they better hope their employers don’t find out. They may fire themselves for conduct policies.

  27. Joanna says:

I wish they would make masks mandatory here in Florida.

    • Cassandra says:

Sameeeeeee, but DeSantis doesn’t have the testicular fortitude to enact that order. As evidenced by the fact that instead of just shutting down bars, he took away their right to serve alcohol 🙄

I’m interested to see what restrictions they try to enact after the 4th. I have a feeling they’re trying to keep things open for the holiday.

      • Lady D says:

They seriously want packed beaches and bars for the 4th weekend? Is it money/greed? Is it the fundamental inability to understand the word pandemic? How come they don’t understand how many will get infected or what it will do to their health care system? This truly bamboozles me. We’re doing better with the pandemic here in BC, but I was still pissed yesterday when I did my bimonthly grocery shopping. The directional floor arrows are gone, there is no one monitoring physical distancing and there was at least 150-200 in the store. I badly wanted to turn around and walk right back out, except you know, food and stuff.

  28. Pommom says:

Is it wrong that I want to punch nasty wenches like these 2 in the throat? The one from Florida is bat poop crazy.

  29. Oc says:

The craziest thing for me is that all those people against using a mask, something so simple that can help to avoid spreading the virus and can help save lives and protect ourselves and others are the same ones that want to avoid women to have acess to safe abortions, are against vaccines and scream “all live matters”. They are so stuck on their ignorance, hate, racism, misoginy and conspiracy theories that they can’t even see or don’t want to see or pretend to don’t see how their “beliefs” are contradictory. I bet those people are not washing there hands or using sanitizers on purpose too.

  30. damejudi says:

Ugh. I work in a public library, and our building opened for public use a couple of weeks ago (we provided pick up service since the first week in May), and I’ve heard some interesting things from people who object to wearing a mask.

“It’s not like we live in China.”
“You seem more concerned about Coronavirus than cancer-shouldn’t we be worried about cancer?”
“It’s been proven that you can’t catch the virus from contact.”

And one of the best: “I survived polio.” Our security staffer responded, “Oh wow, you had polio?” Answer back was “No! I had the vaccine!”

Learning things about people I never wanted to know.

  31. Intheknow says:

For someone with a ‘breathing problem’, she sure has a healthy set of lungs to use for yelling.

    Ugh.

  32. Aang says:

Waited in line to get into TJ last week. I neeeeeeded some palak paneer. The whole time I was behind some old fart in line who was yelling about how waiting outside was taking away his freedom to shop and how he was never shopping here again. The door attendant who was kindly handing out hand wipes finally told him he was free to leave and he didn’t hav to shop there this time either. His wife then told him to zip it because she needed groceries and if he wouldn’t be quiet he could go wait in the car. I wanted to clap but I was afraid he’d really loose it.

    • North of Boston says:

Several of the stores near me have signs up asking people to shop alone, recognizing that two people shopping together cause more crowding, make it harder to social distance and putting more people at risk if it happens someone in the store has the virus.

In most cases, there’s no reason why two people have to go in the store together, so with that husband and wife, either one of them would probably have been able to do the shopping on their own. Grumpy snowflake “mask requirements take away my freedumb” dude should have just stayed in the car.

      • Jaded says:

I’m on Vancouver Island and all the stores here are recommending only one person from the family should shop. Mr. Jaded is type 1 diabetic and considered a high risk for developing serious complications should he contract the virus so I do all the shopping by myself. People just won’t use common sense, it’s all about them and their f*cking rights and it makes me want to day drink…

  33. Donn says:

I legitimately have breathing problems (Ventolin Symbacort and Fluticasane prescriptions) and it’s sometimes hard to breathe but if I’m in public, I limit my time and wear a mask. My health is no more important than everyone else’s.

    • Seraphina says:

I so agree with you. I love to shop but wearing this mask has made it so difficult when you take in the heat and humidity of where I live. And so I go in sporadically. I understand the greater good concept and I thank you for also understanding it.

  34. KellyRyan says:

When in a crisis watch for the extremes. In our small community, we have the elitists and the normal. 🙂 Those considerate and those crazy. Private patrol screeching on FB insisting residents wear masks and they don’t. We have protesters close to a major freeway with signs and a crazy leaves a hateful note on the windshield. On and on.

  35. Sparkle says:

It is mandated that you wear a mask in California when in public. I joined a “Reopen California” group on facebook to see what they were saying…it is a strange racist, anti mask, pro trump group of people like this. They advise each other to do exactly what this woman did- to wear the mask to get in and immediately take the mask off and claim a health issue prevents them from wearing a mask, they believe since they claim a medical reason that businesses must accommodate them. They think they “own the libs” when they do this and are patriots. In the beginning of coronavirus, this 100k strong group even advised each other to “cough” on any “sheep” that tell them to wear a mask. You get charged with assault now if you do that. The facebook group had neo nazis in it who were offering to send armed men to “secure” businesses who wanted to violate the shelter in place and open anyways. I deleted facebook a few weeks ago. That platform is a breeding ground for hate and develops people just like this woman. The group is really demented and you can see them out and about in stores and its pretty obvious who they are, like this woman.

    • Lizzie Bathory says:

Thanks for sharing. As others suggested upthread, it seems clear some of this activity is coordinated. It’s all just so…stupid.

      • Sparkle says:

Facebook has become an echo chamber for the right and it definitely has radicalized them into the alt right, which is just a cover up name for white supremacy. It is well know that neo nazis have infiltrated conservative groups and are agitating these idiots (see Karen’s behavior at Trader Joes) to act on behalf of their agenda- which is to get Trump reelected so they continue their fascist racist agenda.

I don’t think this woman is a crisis actor, I think she has been manipulated and radicalized by alt right propaganda on fox news and social media most likely.

    • Ainsley7 says:

It’s scary how radicalized the right has become.

    • Nana says:

This is exactly the kind of hate/bile/misinformation spreading Facebook group that should be banned from festering away in social media-land.
      Revolting.

  36. LunaSF says:

As a white woman who loves Traders Joe’s …fuck this Karen. It’s a piece of cloth on your face, I just don’t get the outrage. I feel so bad for all the employees dealing with a pandemic and these assholes. I live in NM and we have a democratic governor who is doing a great job. Masks are required everywhere and we doing a great job compared to our non masked neighbors. Just wear the freaking mask!

    • Carmen says:

Your governor is probably why NM hasn’t seen a spike in Covid infections, even though you are right in between both Texas and Arizona where the virus is running wild. Good for her.

      • Alarmjaguar says:

Governor L-G is awesome! But from what I hear idiots from Tx and Az are coming over the border (maskless) and causing NM # to spike despite all her precautions.

  37. Feedmechips says:

The fact that she is wearing clothes from Bebe tells me everything I need to know about this person.

  38. Seraphina says:

@kaiser, I too live in VA. Probably a bit more south of you and CB. Our governor has been calm and I know I feel a bit more at ease knowing he has a medical background. Which some idiots say doesn’t count because it was pediatric.
I will say, I am so freaking tired of seeing people without masks. And I don’t think we will go into Phase III because these people are acting like it’s a apocalyptic party every weekend. No way will he roll us to next phase.

    • JJ says:

“….doesn’t count because it was pediatric.”

OT: I hadn’t heard that one before. He actually did adult neurology residency, followed by peds neuro fellowship. The amount of disrespect given to pediatrics and sub specialities – not just by idiots – is really frustrating.

As a VA resident, my hope is that Northam looks at not just VA trends but what is going on in the rest of the country before pursuing further reopening. NC and SC are accessible from multiple major highways.

      • Dee Kay says:

I mean, the anti-maskers clearly don’t respect or understand *any* medical science, so ofc they don’t get that a pediatrician is a “real” doctor who does comprehend epidemiology very well. The anti-science, anti-intellectual bent of many Americans really astounds and irritates me.

  39. trout predator says:

“the devil, 5G, Bill Gates, Hillary Clinton, “the pedophiles” and the deep state”

Oh sweet, it’s Karen’s idiot cousin, Qaren.

  40. Other Renee says:

I have asthma and allergies that have been off the charts bad since February. Finally my doctor gave me an additional inhaler (Advair) and we installed hepa filters and I’m almost back to normal. But in the months when I often felt I couldn’t breathe, on my weekly shopping days, I wore and still wear a freaking mask. 🙄

    • Mary says:

If you are not on it, and deficient, prescription Vitamin D has really helped my lungs a lot (and is thought to help lessen the mpact of Covid-19 infection). Best of luck and I am glad to hear that you are able to wear a mask!

    • schmootc says:

I’ve been on Advair for at least about ten years – Advair and Singulair. And it’s like I don’t even have asthma anymore. It’s SO nice. I used to have to take a nebulizer with me wherever I went and not having to worry about it anymore is such a luxury.

  41. Christin says:

Would people who are so adamant about not wearing a mask be fine with medical personnel not wearing masks for their protection?

The sheer selfishness is astounding. Stay distanced and wear the mask.

I also don’t believe the TJ woman has breathing issues to the degree she claims. She clearly craves attention.

  42. AA says:

I live in a blue state where masks are mandatory and cases are going down. I went to the grocery store this past Wed for the first time in a long time (have been having stuff delivered). I won’t do it again. Almost every employee I saw was wearing their mask below their nose, people were paying no attention to the directional signs on the aisles, some customers weren’t wearing masks at all, and by the end of my trip, when a young guy went the wrong way down the aisle with no mask on, I said something to him: “You need to put a mask on and go the right way.” I’m probably his mom’s age so I thought maybe he’d be “mom shamed.” No. First, he said, aw, you’re funny, in a sarcastic way. I said, I’m not kidding. He then called me the c-word and walked on by. People are f’ing crazy, even in blue states, as “Bebe Karen” shows.

    • schmootc says:

I haven’t been to the grocery store since lockdown either and this makes me want to keep getting deliveries. I have a thing about following rules myself and it pisses me off when others ignore them, so that crap would drive me crazy.

  43. Digital Unicorn says:

It was very clearly staged for attention – wanna bet she’s an out of work ‘actress’ looking for some reality show work.

Plus Twitter has tracked her identity down – I won’t post it her but they also posted a photo of her thats clearly a publicity shot type. Apparently she’s a model/actress.

  44. My3cents says:

Karen, the 90’s called they want the TShirt and eyebrows back.

  45. Ari says:

suuuuure you have a real problem breathing with all that yapping yer doing when ya could have been in and out and all these karens are what finally catapulted trump into office > entitled white women so its never a surprise to see them

  46. GuestWho says:

A lot of these people screaming about not wearing masks are the same people screeching that all lives matter. Clearly this proves that people saying that really mean that THEIR lives matter and everyone else’s lives are just obstacles to their questionable happiness. Deplorables indeed.

    • Nana says:

Funny how the all lives matter mobs also happen to be pro-guns and pro capital punishment too… that’s quite the wide bed they lay down in 😐

  47. Lucia says:

    She‘s such a bebe

  48. Frataastic says:

Our oldest has autism and will NOT wear a mask. It ends up being a several hour meltdown-we’ve been training up for a few second here and there-up to 30 seconds now.
Yes we do curbside and avoid crowds now-but that’s the new reality we live in. We’ll keep working on it.

So it really grinds my gears that these people who have no issues wearing a mask do it to make a scene. Or for ‘freedum’. I’m hoping people are a little more forgiving to a kid-but when you have all these idiots now everyone is going to assume that we are trying to make a political statement. If you can wear a mask, wear a mask.

    • Kebbie says:

I doubt anyone would think you were making a political statement because one of your children wasn’t wearing a mask, especially not if the rest of you were. I’d say don’t stress too much about forcing them to wear a mask. If they can’t or won’t wear one, they can’t help it. They’ve got a legitimate reason and you can probably get their doctor to write an exemption if you live in a state requiring masks in public.

      https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2020/05/11/some-autistic-people-cant-tolerate-face-masks-heres-how-were-managing-with-our-son/

    • tcbc says:

You’re doing a great job, Frataastic. People are not behaving logically on their own, so it’s up to us to exert as much control over our sphere of influence (and to pressure our elected officials and businesses) to ensure the safety of ourselves and our loved ones.

I’m sure it’s so difficult trying to get your oldest to wear a mask. I want to commend you for trying. It must be so hard. Kids with autism who live in South Korea, and other Asian countries with strong mask-wearing cultures, do wear masks, so it is possible. I hope you are able to figure out a way to make him comfortable with a mask. Perhaps by watching videos of other kids with masks?

May you and your family be safe and healthy. I wish you luck.

    • JJ says:

Not sure how old your son is, but we have had some success by explaining that wearing a mask is something that the child can do to help keep other people safe – obviously adjusting this for age, verbal, and developmental level. Many kids really latch onto this idea. Also is an opening for various metaphors (ie superhero, etc).

    • theotherViv says:

Would he be ok with a clear face shield? It‘s not officially an accepted mask here in Germany, but people get away with it and it gives SOME coverage.

    • Frataastic says:

He’s 5. I’ve already had family yelling at me about how the ‘virus doesn’t care about his autism. Just tell him he needs to wear it”. Which sure. My 5 year old non-verbal child who just potty trained 3 months ago will just deal with it if I tell him. Sigh.

I get it’s the new world and we’re trying. It’s not like I don’t want him to, he literally can’t.. But we also literally can’t be locked in our house forever. If school is back he’ll have to wear one. I want him to be safe, the people around us to be safe-it just SUCKS

  49. AmyB says:

    Here’s an idea:

Round up all these narcissistic assholes who don’t want to masks, put them all together. Let the virus run rampant, see if they like the ventilator any better. LMAO

These people are F**KING idiots, and an embarrassment to society!

    • Notafan says:

I think they tried that in Tulsa recently. Let’s see how those fools do in a couple weeks…

    • shanaynay says:

      LOL!!!!

    • Nightsky says:

I vote NO ventilators for the maskless morons. Let’s save them for the people who are being responsible and doing their utmost to protect others from the virus.

  50. Mamalama says:

For the people who ask, “If masks work, why do we need social distancing? If social distancing works, why do we need masks? And if they both work, why do we need stay-at-home?,” how about this mind-blower, “If seat belts work, why do we need airbags? If airbags work, why do we need seat belts? If they both work, why do we need brakes?” We are the only country in the world arguing about masks. Talk about Nero fiddling while Rome burns…

  51. Nina Simone says:

Also, her crazy ass is putting those store clerks at risk, infact everyone at risk by yelling in their face without a mask. Despicable !

  52. Vava says:

I saw a sign on the Internet that said something to the effect that if you didn’t wear a mask to enter the establishment, then you had to take all your clothes off to get in. LOL.

  53. Cate says:

I live in Missouri, a very red state. It’s about 50/50 people wearing masks going out. Stores have signs on them saying please wear a mask while shopping but they don’t enforce it. My husband and I actually get stank face for wearing our masks. The employees have their masks half on, nose out. We saw one employee at a store with very thinly woven gauze wrapped around his face. I said seriously? He said I can breathe better. So yeah… It seems a lot of people just don’t get it or are so put upon about it, it’s very frustrating and scary to go out.

  54. Babz says:

This Virginian is very proud of how the Governor has handled the pandemic, but I am against phase 3 reopening on July 1. Our numbers are rising again, and I think even phase 2 was not a good idea, if the numbers are an indication. I have been tracking the numbers for my locality, and they are horrifying. I began after phase 2 reopening, and when I started a couple of weeks ago, they were at 357. This morning they are at 455. I am high risk, I haven’t had a haircut or pedicure since March 7th, and these numbers mean I won’t for the foreseeable future. I have had a couple of unplanned doctor’s visits, and along with those scheduled ones I can’t cancel, I am spending much more time than I am comfortable with being around people. When I see twits like TJ Karen behaving like this, it infuriates me. So far I haven’t encountered anyone like her, and I hope that continues. I am also considering deleting my Neighborhood email account. I had no idea I was living in the midst of a lot of people who would applaud TJ Karen for her little tantrum the other day.

  55. ODIE says:

My interpretation of Karenism is a hysterical, often violent, always over the top spectacle reaction to their entitlement being pointed out. This Karen…I cant tell if she actually believes what she’s saying and fancies herself a literalist libertarian, or of she’s doing that thing where she melts down, Karenly, when someone dare to question why she’s flagrantly breaking rules.

The other night I was thinking about how believing conservative media (and the actual president) about coronavirus makes someone more likely to get the virus. It’s sort of an underlying health condition. I wish that were true, but really, the mask isn’t for the wearer. It’s to protect everyone else. I’m sure there are people who lack the intellectual ability to understand that fact but “You have to wear a mask to walk inside this store.” Is pretty straightforward. A store I went to the other day specified that the mask has to be over both the nose and mouth…some people decide it’s ok to expose one mouth hole if another is covered. Ah… humans.

  56. Thea says:

She would have had to worn a mask to get into Trader Joe’s. There’s always employees in front of store making sure.

Btw, CB, there’s a Devin Nunes Trump ad running on the homepage.

    • ODIE says:

Good point. I imagine social distancing takes a real toll on the type of people who get off on inflicting microaggressions all day long. Maybe they ultimately go out to pick a big fight and explode like this.

  57. Dawn says:

Can we stop using the name Karen as an insult? My mom died when I was a baby and her name was Karen. It hurts my heart every time I hear her name as an insult. As for this woman, she was wrong not to wear a mask but I think it is wrong to record these incidences and plaster them all over social media. We don’t know what is going on in her life or if she is suffering a mental health crisis. Destroying them and their lives by plastering these videos all over social media can make it worse or drive them to suicide.

    • Carmen says:

The only way these people are going to learn is to be publicly named and shamed.

    • shanaynay says:

I disagree. If they are going to cause a scene then they deserve to be blasted all over so people know what like of lunatics they are. They got no shame in their game, and should be called out each time.

    • Lady D says:

Pretty sure she brought her own photographer. It’s mentioned here in this thread.

    • anon says:

Will somebody think of those poor little Karens?

    • Andrew’s Nemesis says:

@Dawn I’m so sorry that you lost your mother. Your heart must be broken every day. My sincere sympathies.
      *But*
Don’t excuse that woman’s behaviour. This isn’t a case of ‘let’s be understanding because mental health issues’. I’ve got massive mental health issues right now. I’m so unhappy that it physically hurts to be awake. I spend my time either in tears or close to tears. You know what I wouldn’t do? Go rampaging in public and scream at people who are wearing masks and, you know, asking that others kindly do the same so their RISK OF DYING is lessened. Or Attack people, assault them, by spitting in their faces. Or have a performative rage-fest so I could be an internet meme.
This woman IS privilege. You know that thing we’re supposed to check? She epitomises it. This woman has never been told ‘no’. She believes she has a god-given right to special treatment. She’s having a toddler meltdown because she’s been told to put a piece of cloth over her face to – let’s repeat – mitigate the RISK OF DYING.
Her rights don’t trump mine or yours. Let’s not excuse poor behaviour but call it out and condemn it wherever we see it.

  58. Sparky says:

People don’t seem to be getting the point that mask wearing’s main benefit is to prevent someone from giving Covid TO YOU!

I “attended” a lecture on living in the time of Covid given at UCLA by Dr. Zhaoping Li, a UCLA med school professor/UCLA Health doc. These figures come from her slide presentation which I downloaded>>>>> The transmission probability (her term) from a carrier NOT wearing a mask to someone who IS wearing a mask is 70%. If the carrier is masked and the other person is not it’s 5% and if both people are masked it’s 1.5%

    • JJ says:

Don’t those numbers show that the biggest protective benefit of the mask is when the sick person is masked, to prevent spreading infection (transmission probability of 5 percent when carrier is masked and other person is not)? This is in line with what has been published about the benefits of mask wearing. This also facilitates the faulty thinking that people who “know” they aren’t sick don’t need to wear masks.

Note from that data that a mask will only protect you 30% of the time around a unmasked carrier- and if the carrier is yelling, screaming, and in your face, like this person, it would increase the likelihood of transmission.

  59. Kee says:

If breathing is the problem, there are more breathable masks. Maybe she should spend less time with the ugly brow drawing and spend that time buying ventilating masks!

  60. april says:

I think it’s some kind of white-supremacist vengeance, started by Trump. They probably hope by not wearing a mask they infect Democrats and minorities. I think they are that vile.

  61. Keira says:

For more like this, check out @karensgoingwilds on IG. Kinda scary how all the Karen & Kevin MAGAts sound the same. And thank you @(TheOG) jan90067 for that great term!

  62. Emily says:

The irony is that if they wore their masks, we could slow the spread and re-open the economy, get our hair cuts etc. just like they protested for.

They think this is some government control plot and it’s a self fulfilling prophecy because the longer they don’t follow the rules, the longer the government will need to babysit them.

  63. Mandy says:

Of course she would be wearing a bedazzled Bebe shirt…that should be apart of the official Karen uniform.

  64. Gorky says:

If she has a respiratory problem why would she be going out during this pandemic?

  65. qtpi says:

My blood pressure goes through the roof when I am out and about. I seriously want to ram by cart into anyone without a mask. or they have it on and it is below their nose or under their chin. Like I get so mad I could shake sometimes. All is says is I couldn’t care less about the people around me

  66. Jace says:

We have a coffee shop in Phoenix and tried reopening with masks but so many people fight us on wearing them. It’s crazy.

  67. Kriseth says:

I’m on a r/France Reddit who recently had a discussion post about the use of “Karen” and “Becky.”

The (white) French like to pretend they are above racism so they all said that Karen meant an older white woman and that the term was misogynistic and sexist. I tried to correct them letting them know that Karen is used now (which is why they are talking about it now) to refer to a white woman who uses her skin color as a weapon in her confrontations. Gave examples and everything.

They said that’s NOT the proper usage (and I sighed behind my computer) and that there was no term used for men. I said I had often seen Chad and Kyle. Some Frenchie tried to say they lived in the US and had never heard that. I shut them down saying that as a Black American, maybe they just weren’t running in the right circles to hear this “slang.”

Kaiser, lo and behold, you post this, and I link them directly to this post. Thank you! They didn’t respond, but it feels good to put them in their place.

    • Dee Kay says:

@Kriseth, I’ve lived in France several times and it always drives me nuts that so many French people think they are not racist at all like racism can’t exist in France (hello: French colonies in Africa and racially segregated banlieues). I’m glad you educated the people on that reddit sub but I’m sorry you had to.

  68. Nightsky says:

I have COPD and constant, killer hot flashes due to menopause. Masks are hot and I struggle to breathe within minutes of putting one on. Yet, I wear a mask EVERY single time I go out in public.

Is it wrong that I want to punch this idiotic, yammering ahole right in her maskless bitch face? :/

    • Nana says:

Someone needs to invent a cooling mask specifically for menopausal mask wearers – similar to Ruffwear’s cooling vests for doggo’s.
Edit: I just googled cooling face mask and looks like it’s already been done 🙂

  69. Nightsky says:

    oops, double post

  70. Nana says:

Just want to say as an overseas CB reader, I just feel for you all there in the US so very much (and really the UK mob too, and that goes for Brazil and South America, Indonesia and African/Middle Eastern countries that are struggling too).
I live in a country where we’ve managed to keep it under control, but our stupidity keeps rearing its ugly head (mainly around no concept of social distancing and it’s as though masks weren’t even invented here) and no doubt we’ll be dealing with spikes and potentially a second wave at some stage. But we are on an island with a small population – so much easier to identify and deal with clusters and outbreaks as they arise.
It is heartbreaking to see what you are all battling on a daily basis – not only pandemic-wise, but socially, politically and economically. And let alone in the context of all the Karens and racism going down. Wish there was something I could say or do from afar – but just hope you’re all finding your own little ways of taking care of yourselves.

  71. JulieCarr says:

These people are idiots, but man, the decision by WHO and other major health orgs to downplay the usefulness of masks because there wasn’t enough stock at first…that’s going to be one of the big takeaways of this whole pandemic. All they had to do was ban the sale of N95’s and surgical masks in retail stores, and tell people to fashion their own (or just wrap some fabric around their face). Instead we got months of authority figures saying masks don’t help or don’t help enough to matter. It’s no surprise there’s a big contingent who aren’t interested in listening anymore.

  72. Andrew’s Nemesis says:

Here’s hoping that she’s been spayed.

  73. alexc says:

I think some of these angry Karens are actually mentally ill/unstable.

  74. Anya says:

Yea, masks make you sick. That’s why surgeons wear them during procedures. 😀
