The stupidest congressman, Louie Gohmert, tested positive for the coronavirus and he brought his entire staff into a closed room to announce it. And he says that he thinks he got the virus from wearing a mask. I can’t. [Jezebel]

Just when it seemed like the Covidiots couldn’t get any stupider…

    • JanetDR says:

      He’s the worst! Ugh.

    • Still_Sarah says:

I think we have found someone to nominate for the Charles Darwin Award. It is usually reserved for people who have actually died from their own stupidity but I think we can make an exception in these pandemic times.

      • Juniper says:

@Still_Sarah, I think the Darwin awards have runners up — the people who almost die from doing something stupid.

    • Snappyfish says:

I watched him, during the Barr hearings, blow his nose in his bandanna mask. The man is disgusting….& stupid

    • Anne Call says:

I read that he used to be a judge. Texas needs to get its sh*t together and go blue and vote these moronic idiots out of office.

  2. Sam the Pink says:

Gohmert’s conduct is resignation worthy. Everybody should follow Jake Sherman on twitter – he is chasing down so many leads from anonymous staffers in Republican House offices who say they are pressured to come to work without masks, that their bosses take absolutely NO precautions at all, etc. Its really incredibly scary how they are basically trying to force their employees to work in high risk situations (and before anybody jumps in with the “Republicans, screw em haha” takes, I believe everybody has the right to a safe workplace, even if I disagree with their job. I don’t like junk bond traders but I’m not rooting for them to die, so save it).

    • Lightpurple says:

They are also working in the same buildings, passing through the same security checkpoints, attending the same meetings, riding the same elevators, using the same restrooms as Democratic members of Congress and their staff members. This is why Pelosi delayed returning to the buildings as long as possible and GOP leadership gave her Hell for it.

    • Christin says:

Sadly, this isn’t just in DC. Bosses not leading by example and putting employees at increased risk is happening in many sectors.

    • North of Boston says:

I’m in the US and work for a small company that has been pretty good about making sure we mask up, that things are cleaned, disinfected regularly. The company upstairs in the same building is being sold this week to a firm based in Ireland. The Operations Manager for that company was down in my office dropping off paperwork today, complaining how awful it is that the new owners are requiring all the employees wear masks when they are at work.

She was all “Argh, whaa whaa … we’ve been wearing masks *usually* for 6 weeks since we came back to work. When is it going to end?! It’s so annoying and hard to wear a mask all day at work. I can’t believe they are going to make us wear masks all the time whaa whaa whaa”

I basically told her “Good for the new owners! They’re smart and they are concerned about their employees’ health and safety” and indicated I really wasn’t the audience for ‘whaa whaa why are the grown ups making us wear masks? I don’t wanna’ whines, since in addition to my full time job I also care for my 88 year old mother who I really don’t want to die, and therefore wear a mask all day every day when I’m at work, except for when I’m drinking coffee I brought from home. And I explained how there can be issues indoors even when people stay 6 feet apart due to air circulation, so, yeah, masks are a really good idea and if we all wore masks when out of our homes for 6 weeks we could end this.

I’ve seen the work spaces in her company … she may be in a small office, but just about everyone else works in a low-walled cubicle bullpen, or at long, doubled up workbenches in the manufacturing area. There is no way if one person their had COVID-19 and they worked without masks that at least 3 other people wouldn’t get it too, and so on and so on.
I don’t get it … wearing a mask isn’t hard. I’m really disappointed at the ##s of people who are being whiny babies and idiots about this.

Thankfully, she was wearing a mask when she came by, otherwise I wouldn’t have let her in.

  3. adastraperaspera says:

Don’t let Gohmert fool you. He was class president at Baylor Law School. He’s playing “southern dumb” so that the “mask made me sick” headline will cover up the actual crime he just committed–reckless endangerment.

  4. Mia4s says:

Hey Louie! Herman Cain just called to sa…oh wait no he didn’t because he died of COVID 19 this morning. Ugh.

  5. Ariel says:

There should be an idiot threshold. He would not make it.
How is he an elected leader?
    Does he actually believe that?
Why is the one thing that we can do to stop the virus disbelieved?
    I am at a loss.

  6. Lindy says:

The most important part of the Gohmert story is that he was walking side by side with Bill Barr, both maskless, the day of Barr’s hearing this week.

Pleeeeeaaaase let Barr catch it from Gohmert.

    • clomo says:

      A ventilator level case.

    • Giddy says:

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been making a list of those who should get Covid instead of their constituents etc., who depend on them for protective legislation. Gohmert is in the top of my list, and if he gives it to Barr I’ll be thrilled.

  7. Valerie says:

lol, what a fucking dumbass. There is no length to which these people won’t go to escape reality and personal responsibility.

  8. Still_Sarah says:

Regarding the emus, I thought “How Aussie! Being banned from a bar for bad behaviour”. check the video – it’s hilarious and much more fun than that stupid Republican Gohmert.

  9. Aleja says:

Gohmert might be stupid for letting his team know inside a close room.
However, he could be right about the mask? We’ve been told about the false sense of security they might provide. They are diuble edge swords. There are procedures in order to wear a mask as well as to take it off.

I’ve seen lots of people who just jump into their cars and take their masks off, and put it on just like that as soon as they get to another place. If you’re taking your mask off, you have to wash your hands before and after putting it on and taking it off, otherwise it’s just useless. You get virus on your hands and then you take it elsewhere with you.
Remeber masks works as long as as we keep hands clean and social distancing.

    • MaryContrary says:

You cannot “get” covid from wearing a mask. That is out and out untrue.

    • lucy2 says:

The masks more to keep you from spreading it to other people, by containing your respiratory droplets, especially if you are asymptomatic and don’t know you have it.

    • Elizabeth says:

No — please do not repeat what is false information. If you take basic precautions to launder your cloth mask after wearing, you will NOT be at risk from the mask.

The mask HELPS. It protects you (keeping the viral load you may accumulate lower) and others (in case you are an asymptomatic carrier).

    • North of Boston says:

So, maybe, maybe, if you went to an intake place where they were retesting people who had already tested positive for COVID-19, and when they admitted a sick person who was coughing their lungs out while wearing a mask, and picked up that person’s mask when they were wheeled out of the room to be put on a ventilator, and you put that mask on your face and wore it? Maybe then you *might* get COVID-19 from a mask.

But otherwise? No, I don’t think that the mask that you put on when you left your house and wore only on your face while interacting with other people would be a vector of disease. Because you’re washing/sanitizing your hands before you put your mask on, and before you take it off, right? Like they tell you to, right? And your not wearing other people’s masks that haven’t been sanitized? Yeah, no … you didn’t get COVID-19 from your mask.

  10. Mina_Esq says:

I didn’t think there was anyone stupider than that rep. that was trying to make a point that political science is not science when questioning John Kerry some time ago, but I stand corrected. We have a new champion of stupidity in the House.

  11. Jay says:

The Republican leader accidentally referred to Gohmert as ” Congressman Covid”. Be a shame for that nickname to stick, you know. A constant reminder for him. Again, I reeeeeeally hope people don’t start calling Louis Gohmert “Congressman Covid”. We’re better than that 🤣

  12. AuntieG says:

Ughhh Gohmert is the representative of my part of Texas. He’s a moron but he’s also a snapshot of how a lot of people around here think. It’s mind blowing the ridiculous and downright dumb things people will believe because they read it online from their cousins friends boyfriends neighbor who posted about their quack doctor friends opinion on Facebook. Living in a small town, I’ve always been in the minority on my opinions but this pseudoscience & conspiracy theory stuff is makes me feel like I’m adrift alone in a sea of maskless idiots.

  13. Veronica S. says:

His stupidity does reveal an alarming mindset that a lot of scientists have been warning about, though – people wear the mask and feel safe enough to get closer than they should, even though they are not true N95 grade in most situations and still risk infection. The mask is to protect others from your aerosolized droplets by limiting your respiratory projection. The distance is to protect you from theirs.

Hi fellow Celebitchy fans. I know a lot of you are British, I was born there and have lived all over but most relatives are in England. I have been living in Cali lately(Carmel, not shabby for the U.S. these days). But fellow limeys, how is it over there these days, haven’t been back in 10 years. I am middle-aged and know if I don’t go soon the harder it will get. Is it a bad idea to move back there maybe later retire south for warmer weather somewhere. Taxes I know can be problems but my main concern is being around people like me in important ways and the biggest one the way health care is. U.S. you get hit by an uninsured driver you can lose your home. I’m not super familiar with some things there(same here) but the nostalgia for GB is strong. I know the world is a mess and Trump is so bad I am ready to blow this pop stand for all sorts of options. But I digress. fellow Brits/Yanks if you had just enough money to go most places to live frugally and are nature and culture lovers what would you do? I am very alone right now so not many to ask.

A city mayor in Indonesia invited journalists then announced that he got covid. He held the prescon in his house yard (open air), stood more than 3m from those journalists and wore mask.
Still, I thought that was the stupidest action by public officer, before I read this story
