Cate Blanchett in an Armani blazer at the Venice Film Festival: so chic??

Here are some photos from the past few days of the Venice Film Festival: Pandemic Edition. I’ve been mostly impressed with Jury President Cate Blanchett’s style choices, especially considering that she’s doing a lot of repeats from her own closet. Her stylist spoke about the messaging behind that – Cate wanted “sustainable” choices for Venice, and Cate wanted to encourage women to look in their closets to rework old looks rather than buying new stuff constantly. On Sunday, Cate wore a more tailored menswear-inspired look: a sparkly Armani blazer over a simple white blouse and white trousers. So chic!

Maya Hawke in Versace. I love the design of this dress, honestly, but I dislike that kind of beige-y/nude on pale white women. To me (and perhaps I’m alone), it doesn’t look good, it looks like a condom was dropped in glitter.

Gia Coppola in Gucci Resort. I hate this so much. It’s massively fussy and dated. She looks like an old-lady lampshade.

Vanessa Kirby in Valentino. This is stunning and dramatic, especially on such a tall woman. I wish her hair wasn’t so severe, it kind of takes away from the dress.

Bonus Vanessa in a black suit & dark lips. Business-goth!

Hoo boy, that is one ugly dress on Gia Coppola. Sherbet colors.

  2. Ohlala says:

Armani is soo boring and so outdated. Can’t wrap my head around how is it still keep going.

    • Tanguerita says:

Absolutely. I don’t remember anything made by Armani in the past decade that wasn’t a complete snooze.

    • AnnaKist says:

A bit like Balmain. Remember when the Kardashian-Jenners were all about Balmain? Maybe Armani got hit with the KarJen stick as well.

  3. Tanguerita says:

This black suit on Kirby is everything. She is such a striking woman.

    • FHMom says:

      Definitely the best look here.

    • Ohlala says:

That suit is wonderful on her i just wish she returned to brunette..she is so striking as brunnette. Also classic or more orangey red lips would work better. That goth look was already done and dusted

      • Onnit says:

While I love the Goth look, I think you are right. That blonde makes her look insipid, and now that you mention a more vibrant lip color, I can see the gorgeous look you are suggesting. I think it starts with the hair…who told her she looks “good” with that hair?

    • Lady Baden-Baden says:

I’d like it better with something under the blazer.

  4. Laalaa says:

    Maya looks amazing, c’mon.

    • FHMom says:

I love the dress. I just wish she didn’t have her mom’s Pulp Fiction hair. It’s distracting.

  5. AnnaKist says:

I like Cate Blanchett’s outfit. But I wouldn’t have recognised her if she wasn’t named in the caption. She looks very different. Why is that?

  6. Honey says:

I actually love the “old lady lampshade” dress!

  7. SomeChick says:

Those white pants are hemmed to perfection! That’s how you do the long pants look.

The red dress is too long in front. Hemming is not that difficult. I’m always agog at the too long dresses worn on the red carpet.

  8. Gobo says:

Gucci is so god damn fugly

I follow Vanessa’s make up artist, Jo Baker, on instagram. It’s really interesting that she posts the looks and the inspiration behind them. She also does Lucy Boynton’s looks, which tend to be more creative.

Kate’s blouse ruins the look for me, I don’t know why. However, I’m all for rediscovering things on your closet.
The others I liked, if Coppola’s dress had had a different neck it would have looked better for sure.

  10. Blerg says:

To me, Vanessa looks a bit like Annette Bening in that second photo.

That Gucci dress…and the perfect compliment underneath: a turtleneck.
It’s like the Earth shoe equivalent of a gown.

  12. Veronica S. says:

I’m going back and forth on whether I think a lighter blazer would be better, but I do like the contrast. She’s never a woman where the clothes wear her, that’s for certain.

That Gucci could be saved if they dropped some of the details. Maybe cut off the sleeves and cut down on the ornamentation?

The red Armani is stunning though. I think they did the hair up intentionally so the open back could show.

  13. Ariel says:

    Vanessa Kirby is divine.
And I don’t see chic when I look at Cate Blanchett. I see Sonny Crocket in Miami.
Maybe it’s just the 80s girl in me.

  14. Caitlin Bruce says:

I like Maya’s dress, and it fits her to perfection but that hair is down right awful. It reminds me of Taylor Swift and her awful barnett.

  15. pupax says:

Noooo Cate NOOOO, she either did something to her nose, or went overboard with some fillers. But whyyy, she was so pretty as she was. I hate that they think they have to do this to themselves. Ufff.
