I read and cover a lot of baby & birth/delivery stories, most of which I’m thankfully able to forget pretty quickly. But one story that’s always stuck with me was Teyana Taylor’s birth story for her first child, daughter Junie, in 2015. Teyana was heavily pregnant but she thought she was weeks away from her due date. All of a sudden, she was in labor on the floor of the bathroom of her home, and her partner Iman Shumpert had to deliver Junie because the baby was coming THAT fast. Like, he barely was able to talk to the 911 operator and he had to tie off the umbilical cord with his headphone-cord.
Well, it happened again. Teyana once again thought she was weeks away from her due date, and she and Iman threw themselves a baby shower in their Atlanta home. Just hours after the shower, Teyana gave birth in their bathroom. When Teyana’s babies want to come out, they get in their jet skis and bust out. It’s crazy. Iman posted this on his Instagram:
At 3:28 am on Sept 6th 2020 Rue Rose 🌹 decided that the baby shower thrown for her and mommy was too lit. She didn’t make the party but she managed to make the next day her birthdate!!! Now…when we buy homes, we always find a bathroom with great energy… but not in a million years would you be able to tell me we’d deliver both of our daughters in a bathroom without the assistance of a hospital! Our newest edition entered the world in the water and came out looking around and ready to explore! A healthy child. A little sister. Another daughter. Black love wins….again. Welcome babygirl…we love you! 🌹 @babyruerose
I’m really moved by this? I’m sure Teyana and Iman were like “okay we’re really going to have a birth plan with this one” and those babies are like “nah, I’m going to come out in the bathroom,” and Iman and Teyana just roll with it. I imagine that – because there seem to be zero complications – it’s actually really beautiful to just have your partner/husband deliver the baby so easily. I bet Iman was more prepared this time. And Rue Rose! Cute name.

BTW, he is her husband of nearly four years. They married in 2016.
A friend of mine had her second baby in her living room twenty minutes after getting back home from the hospital who tried telling her it was too soon. She had given birth before so she knew what advanced labor felt like. Luckily mom and baby were OK. Her mom assisted with the delivery.
That’s so frustrating. I had a lot of bladder/kidney infections when pregnant and one Thursday I was having the worst pains ever and when I called my doctor (whose office was an hour away) they just said it was my bladder spasming and to take my muscle relaxers. At my appointment the next morning I was in labor and 3cm dilated. Luckily they were able to stop the labor and my son was born at 35 weeks instead of 32 but I knew it was a weird pain!

Also: as a black woman, it’s probably safer that she had both babies at home. SMDH at American healthcare.
A close friend of mine grew up with Iman; he was a sweet kid and grew up into a sweet man. I’ve only met him a few times but I found him very charming. I’m a little surprised Teyana’s first birth was so quick, lucky girl!
