President-Elect Joe Biden is predicted to win Pennsylvania (update: PA called for Biden!)

Biden Addresses the Nation
Update by Celebitchy: I’ll let Kaiser cover this when she gets in, but Pennsylvania was just announced for Biden, where he has an over 34,000 lead with 99% of the vote counted. NBC News and the AP have projected the presidency for Biden. Joe Biden has 284 electoral votes and will be the 46th president of the United States.

The latest Pennsylvania numbers have just come in, and as I’ve suspected for the past 24 hours, everyone wanted PA to be the state that handed Joe Biden the presidency of the United States of America. Pennsylvania is Joe Biden’s birthplace. It is the state which moulded him into the man he is today. And they will hopefully get to call it for their favorite son. Biden knew it too, he’s known it all along, he felt deep in his soul that he would win Pennsylvania. And here we go:

President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-Elect Kamala Harris will likely give speeches soon enough. Each individual news outlet will make their own decisions about when and how they call the race, and it’s worth noting that governors and secretaries of state are not “calling” or “claiming” their states for a certain candidate. It’s up to the media and to all of us to understand when someone has won. Joe Biden has won. Joe Biden will be the 46th President of the United States.

Also: I think Georgia is going to stay blue. I think Nevada and Arizona will stay blue as well. Which means that Biden will win the presidency with more than 300 electoral votes and with a 3 million-plus margin in the popular vote.

VERY deep sigh of relief!!! Waking up to this news was the balm I needed after a very hard day yesterday. I feel like I can take a deep breath again!!

WELCOME, MR. PRESIDENT-ELECT BIDEN, AND MS. VICE PRESIDENT-ELECT, HARRIS!! YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS AND WELCOMES YOU!!!!🍾
      🎈🎉👏🏻

    • Noodle says:

Now everyone be safe. Once it’s called I’m fearful the terrorists (Proud Boys, etc) will descend.

      • Libby says:

Crying too! I live in EU and I haven’t been able to get enough sleep for the past 4 days.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Two of them drove a Hummer to Philly yesterday, armed, to “disrupt” the counting. FBI got them. It WILL continue, but these little boys with their little mushrooms, playing soldier, are NO match for the C.A.T teams and the SS snipers. And after the way the Moldy Traitor treated the SS, I think it’d give them a lot of pleasure to take those twats out.

      • Noodle says:

@(theog), I read that story. I’m so relieved they got them. I have several BIPOC colleagues at work and they are really nervous and staying close to home. It just takes one rogue nut job to incite further race war violence.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Noodle, I know how you feel! I *am* afraid of all the crazies, just *waiting* for a chance to “get ’em” with a feeling of impunity… these a$$hats don’t realize their “Fearless Führer” doesn’t give two $hits about them, only what he can get them to do FOR him; they are literally that piece of toilet paper stuck to the bottom of his shoe, as far as he’s concerned. As I said, these Little Mushroom “Soldiers” are NO MATCH for FBI/SS sharp shooters who are fed up with being treated like crap by the Moldy Orange.

While there are 60M of them (not ALL radical, but you know what I mean), there are 250M of US… we WILL prevail!

      • Anna says:

But now that the FBI and other security orgs will be governed by Biden-Harris, we’ll see more protection than the last 4 years when 45 has used government security, ICE, and police as his own personal henchmen. I’m not saying everything will be perfect *at all* but at least we know that the ones in charge are on the side of justice and protection for the people.

Wiglet Watcher, I heard both Kushner and Mcanany have been deleting tweets. The rats are deserting the ship. No one wants the tell the furer he’s fired. Lol!

        Sofia’s
That’s great news! Let it all begin!

      • Rise & Shine says:

Bibi, yes. Did you all see the signs saying you’re fired and other things today that were posted outside the new security gate Mr. Trump had put up around the White House? My friend saw it and took pics and it is a thing of beauty. Hope the news outlets post it. It was wonderful!

    • LahdidahBaby says:

At last. The nightmare is ending, hope can raise its head once again. America can begin to mend, and the world can breathe a sigh of relief. Trump is out! A man of peace and unity will be our new President. AND we will have, for the first time in our history, a woman VEEP…a woman of color! Hallelujah!

Seriously .. did you see the article about a painting that was sent from the London embassy to US last year. Check his residences as well. I can see things being moved now.

Relief is all I feel right now. Well, relief and deep gratitude for all who worked and fought SO HARD to save our democracy. Relief and gratitude are wonderfully enough for now. Maybe I’ll reach a point of actual happiness when Biden/Harris are sworn in. I have champagne patiently chilling for that day.

I don’t think his hair is attached to his head, maybe drag him out by his feet instead?

  7. Sierra says:

    Yes yes 🙌🏽

Please turn blue North Carolina both the state and Senate seat.

    I want a totally blowout.

    • Lucky Charm says:

I don’t think NC will turn blue but it looks like GA is, and both GA senate seats will have a runoff in January, so we could have a chance to pick up those two seats and tie at 50. Which means VP Harris would be the Senate tiebreaker. 😊

  8. TheOriginalMia says:

Just got a little choked up seeing President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris. Wow. I think they will wait until later. They started preparing the stage in Delaware last night, so I’m pretty sure we are going to get the full production. I hope so. We need it as a country and they deserve it for running a great campaign. Let’s celebrate them. And us. Yes, there’s the 67M that voted for Trump left to deal with, but that’ll wait for tomorrow. Let’s embrace our future today.

  9. Case says:

Winning by a large margin is SO important so that Trump can’t contest it legitimately. So glad we got PA and will likely hold on to at least AZ and GA. Wow. A lot were close races, but flipping so many states IS a landslide we should be proud of. Yes, there’s a lot of work to do. But today, I’m finally proud to be an American again.

  10. Pamspam says:

I can’t hope or breathe until it’s done. Hope has hurt me so much the past four years.

    • Lady D says:

Can’t agree hard enough with your statement, Pamspam. I’m still afraid to believe it’s true.

      • Anna says:

Agreed. We’re all in a state of shock from these years of abuse. Trusting the outcome will be with both eyes open.

    • Jess says:

Ditto, Pamspam. I’m starting to believe it will happen but the fear and worry hasn’t left yet. Hopefully by the end of the day I can really let myself belief and celebrate.

    • Dazed and Confused says:

100% with you here. Until it is official, I won’t be able to relax, breathe, cry…all of it. I am far more hopeful than I was Tuesday and Wednesday, though.

The AP and Fox News called AZ for Biden putting him at 264. Other media outlets have him at 253. There’s no consensus, but the AP is well respected, and known to be neutral. I’m still holding my breath though and letting my anxiety and leftover Halloween candy get the best of me.

    • Wiglet Watcher says:

Right I’m watching AP too. He’s any 1 state away from the win. This is amazing!

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

FOX DID??????? CNN was JUST saying that Fox staff was told NOT to call Biden President Elect. One of the Murdock boys’ wife (Kathleen? Katherine? can’t remember) said that they will have to start taking responsibility.

      • Becks1 says:

The Fox decision desk was the first one who called Arizona, on Tuesday night/early Wed morning. The fox anchors didn’t like the call but the desk has not budged, lol.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Wow, Becks1, that is….something! I heard CNN this morning comparing Fox to state run TV. Never heard them actually *say* that before (though WE all *know* it).

  16. ILoveMusic says:

A president who won both the popular and electoral votes! What a concept. It still rankles me that my vote never counts because I live in a red state, but nothing is going to dampen my happiness today!!! Bye bye Donnie – can’t wait to watch you move from the White House to the courthouse!!!

    • Suz says:

Georgia is turning blue. Georgia! Your vote DOES count! And thank you for voting!

    • Lemons says:

Don’t think of it as your vote, but think of it as your voice! You are saying, “I am here, and I exist!” Someone will hear you and start understanding your values and morals and may decide that they will share them too.

Georgia has been red for a long time, but with an influx of students, tech, and minorities in the state, we’re slowly changing the demographics. We’ll be officially BLUE soon!

Georgians VOTE in this run-off election! I’ve already donated to Jon Osoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock. Please do the same if you can spare it!

    • Justwastingtime says:

I think we at least need to move to a system like Maine where you split the electoral votes by districts.

I am not even going to address the fact that my state is so underrepresented in the senate as a change is totally not going to happen given our constitution. That being said, the fact that California has the same number of Senators as Rhode Island and Iowa is just plain weird.

  17. Becks1 says:

Getting PA back is huge. Flipping GA and AZ is huge. Dems have been picking ourselves apart over the last few days but we had a GREAT final outcome in this election. We flipped two pretty solid red states, rebuilt the blue wall, and a lot of the other races are close enough to give us hope for the future.

    I’m so happy.

    • Case says:

Agreed. I know it wasn’t the initial blowout we expected, but damn. In the end, we did a great job. Record turnout, turning solidly red states blue. That is significant.

    • windyriver says:

My sister in Omaha is thrilled to have their votes for Biden really matter in a state that otherwise goes overwhelmingly red. Nebraska splits its Electoral College votes, and the district that includes Omaha went blue.

      • Esmom says:

This was huge, she should be thrilled!

      • Becks1 says:

That was exciting! Every single damn vote counts right now and Omaha going blue helps, it means we just need AZ and Nevada to hold blue, and then PA and GA are icing on the cake.

  18. Juliette says:

So happy & so relieved for all of you. Finally stable adults are back in charge. I’ll be raising a glass for you all tonight. Congrats from Canada!!!

  19. Mina_Esq says:

OMG…normalcy! Admirable First Lady! Boss of a Vice President! News cycles not dominated by unhinged President! Could it be? Are we dreaming? Will the POS Trump supporters ruin this for everyone with their petty Nazi protests?

i am so excited (All the way in south africa)

  21. MJM says:

    Tears. So relieved.

  22. MaryContrary says:

I’m happy but I am legit freaked out by Republican leadership continuing to support Trump on baseless claims of voter fraud. I am afraid that Barr is lying in wait for the dust to settle and start litigating for Trump. While Biden won the popular vote and the EC, there are still 63 MILLION people that voted for Trump and will potentially question the legitimacy of the election. Someone say something to put my fears to rest-because I just don’t think this is over.

    • sa says:

Yeah, there are too many Trump toadies in every branch of the federal government and in state governments, I won’t fully relax until it’s actually over.

      • Eleonora says:

This is why Democrats should vote every election, no matter how small.

If a tree has an election, best start voting.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

We can NOT relax! There are two races in GA that will be going to run-off and we NEED THOSE TWO SEATS!!!

    • Vote Science says:

One thing that may ease your mind! Everyone talks about Bush v. Gore in 2000 going to SCOTUS, but that was hinging solely on FL. Biden has at this point won by several states, even if he falls behind in AZ, which is still very possible. There would be little to no legal standing to challenge ALL of those states. And if it does go to SCOTUS, while there is a conservative majority there now, most of the conservative justices (Thomas, Gorsuch) are legalists and do not like to legislate from the bench. They tend to interpret the law literally, for better or worse. Gorsuch has also sided with the more liberal justices several times. ACB is an unknown quantity, but her vote isn’t enough if most other conservative justices aren’t playing along.

      • Becks1 says:

Also, Barrett now is in the spotlight after Trump’s campaign manager specifically made that remark yesterday about “hoping she comes through.” She doesn’t want to start out her SCOTUS career with a very suspicious ruling in favor of the orange cheeto.

But at this point, Trump’s lawsuits are being laughed out of state court, so I don’t think the Supreme court will be the slam dunk he thinks it is. (and some of those judges doing the laughing are Republican appointees.)

      • MaryContrary says:

True-I do remember FL very well. I guess I was naive to expect that once Trump was sinking, that Republican leadership would start to jump ship. But since they’ve never spoken up (with rare exception) to any horrible/untrue crap coming from Trump, and they can see that Trumpism has infected the country, I guess they’ll just continue to back him up :/

      • Vote Science says:

        @Becks1

Totally agree on the individual state cases, they were tossed out regardless of party (e.g. the conservative TX judge that threw out the GOP bid to discard 100,000+ votes). And I hate ACB’s opinions and views, but I don’t think she’s stupid. Her tenure on SCOTUS will far outlive Trump. What does she owe him now? She got her seat for life.

      • sa says:

I don’t worry about Bush v. Gore. That was not decided on actual legal grounds, but on O’Connor (the presumed swing vote) hating Al Gore. The Court knew it was a political, not legal, decision and even wrote into the opinion that it was not to serve as precedent.

But the precedent that is concerning is that the Court can choose a President based on their personal politics rather than the will of the people or any recognized legal theory. In this case, I actually trust that Roberts and Gorsuch would not subvert the vote for legally dubious claims. I do not have the same faith in Thomas, Alito, Kavanaugh, or Barrett. I would only need to be wrong about one of them (probably Gorsuch) for the Court to give it to Trump.

      • sa says:

“I hate ACB’s opinions and views, but I don’t think she’s stupid. Her tenure on SCOTUS will far outlive Trump. What does she owe him now? She got her seat for life.”

And yet the very first thing she did after being sworn in was go to a Trump campaign rally at the White House. So she’s already shown her partisan loyalty is still important to her.

      • sa says:

I’m not saying that there is any real argument for Trump to make to the Court, there isn’t. I think that it’s *possible* that 4 of them would not care how transparently self-serving his “any votes for Biden are fraud” argument is. I’m also not saying that it will happen, just that I’m not convinced it won’t. I don’t think it’s likely, but I’ve been burned over and over again when I’ve expected *any* integrity to their job from Trump enablers. So I no longer rule anything out.

    • Case says:

I was concerned about this until I saw state judges unanimously telling Trump to shut up. They’re not taking him seriously. He has no legitimate evidence. He won’t make it to the Supreme Court.

    • Veronica S. says:

I hope this hammered in for a lot of people how dangerous it is to skip midterm elections and state/local elections. We’re not anywhere clear to out of the woods yet. This wound is going to fester unless we maintain the proper vigilance required to treat it.

      • Ainsley7 says:

We should just make voting mandatory. Everyone has to submit a ballot either by mail or in person. If someone is against mandatory voting then they can leave their ballot blank or write in someone. Also, set districts according to geography and make it permanent. No more gerrymandering. There’s a good reason that republicans are all about voter suppression. They’d lose way more often without it.

    GOOSEBUMPS

  24. DeltaJuliet says:

Is anyone else terrified at the thought of what could happen between now and January 20? I have such dread about all the awful things Trump could do in the meantime.

    • Kersplasha says:

Yes that’s all I keep thinking. Won’t fully relax till January 21st.

    • Ellie says:

Yes, but let’s be happy today. Let’s have our day (we’ve been put through a lot these past for years and we deserve it). Once AP and CNN both call it, it’l be time to just drink champagne, hug, be grateful and finally breathe a sigh of relief. When tomorrow comes, then we can worry about the inevitable violence that Trump is going to drum up.

    • bluemoonhorse says:

Oh I personally think about a second Covid diagnosis for Trump and remain very happy and positive about the next few months.

    • Lucky Charm says:

My daughter thinks that he’ll just flee the country, leaving Pence in charge, so that he won’t be escorted from the inauguration in handcuffs.

      • bluemoonhorse says:

I’m thinking Lady Covid isn’t down with him yet. His Chief of Staff just tested positive.

  25. Other Renee says:

I need to be assured that all the inevitable recounts and lawsuits will not change the results. I need to know that the inevitable challenge to these results will never reach the Supreme Court because we know what would happen there. I won’t be able to breathe easily until President Biden and Vice President Harris are sworn in and the current occupant is dragged out and his belongings dumped on the front lawn.

    • sa says:

The front lawn belongs to us. They can dump him on the street.

    • bluemoonhorse says:

Trump can challenge, but he will have to pay for that challenge in each state he challenges. Also, the GOP are already backing away from wanting to challenge as this would upset their own votes. Which is exactly what I’ve been saying would happen for the last month here on CB.

      • GreenBunny says:

Also, he’s crowd sourcing for lawyers. Brahm Resnick on Twitter has emails sent that ask for lawyers from any state that practice any law to come to AZ at their own expense to work for free. That’s not the sign of someone that has competent lawyers. Also, this was sent out after the election so they clearly had no game plan set up. Also there’s a clip of Hallie Jackson on MSNBC stating that all the best names that are equivalent to Baker are never Trumpers on that front so they won’t do anything to help.

      • bluemoonhorse says:

@GreenBunny I saw this – which was hilarious – that Kushner started calling for attorneys like the day before the election. What an IDIOT. But this is the IDOT zombie presidency so what can you expect?

Biden lined up a team of lawyers as did Pelosi months back. Now Kushner thinks he’s going to find the best constitutional lawyers for FREE????

ROFLAMO. Thanks for letting me know this. It’s if FRIGGING HILARIOUS.

  26. JanetDR says:

I’ve been dawdling around this morning because I didn’t want to read that there was no movement on the election. So glad that I turned here first to you, Kaiser, for this very welcome news! • Eleonora says:

Love to read comments like this

    • Carisel says:

      A WOMAN VICE PRESIDENT!!!!

Also, an interesting little tidbit I just learned.
Abraham Lincoln was elected president 160 years ago today. There is a sweet symmetry to that.

  28. Kateeee says:

I so hate to be debbie downer (really really, because I cried at the unfamiliar rush of hope upon seeing this headline) but this is premature. All of these states will be automatically recounted before any respectable outlet calls it for Biden because the results are so close. Don’t expect speeches today because Biden will absolutely continue to respect the process.

All of that said, holy crap. Please let it stand.

    • Becks1 says:

This is why the states taking their time and being so careful is so important. It makes me feel more confident in the results and less worried that a recount will change the outcome.

    • Case says:

Recounts usually only change the count by hundreds, not thousands.

    • bluemoonhorse says:

That’s why Nevada, PA, and GA took their time. For a recount, the challenger must PAY for it – it isn’t free. And Trump doesn’t have money as we all know. Also, the GOP are not wanting these recounts as it contests their own wins. 😉 I am not concerned.

      • Kateeee says:

Then I’ll go back to crying! I can’t believe it. Now let’s help Georgia bring it all the way home.

      • bluemoonhorse says:

@Kateeee don’t believe anything Trump says. If he says something it is opposite of truth. When he says he will fight and challenge, haha he won’t. 1.) no money to do so; 2.) his GOP cohorts won’t back him on this (other than Lindsay Graham who is deranged); and 3.) he doesn’t have the energy (look at his latest press conference the guy practically stumbled out of the room to calls from a reporter about being a a sore loser).

This guy is done. Although his racist adoring public is not.

He will concede but say it was rigged. That will be his story line.

What will be interesting is if he actually shows up in January to pass the baton. I’m leaning to a maybe-no on this one. He’ll send Pence.

      • bluemoonhorse says:

@Kateeee it does look like that Georgia might do a recount due to state law, but don’t worry, that means more mail-in ballots will be counted (like from overseas military).

  29. Lizzie says:

This is wonderful. Please keep up good wishes/prayers for the Senate so Joe and Kamala can truly lead the country back from this abyss.

    • Amy Too says:

And prayers dont have to be to the Christian god. I’ve been praying to all the gods and goddesses, and the spirits of all the honorable dead who have gone before us and fought this same fight. I pray to and on behalf of the Earth and all her children, be they people, animals, plant, fungus, rocks and minerals, water, air, fire, and earth elementals. I pray for a Democratic win on all levels and I pray that trump and all his enablers and amplifiers will be bound from stealing this election, and that acts of greed, malice, corruption, fear/hate will fail. My mantra has been “Our Will is stronger. Our intent is honorable.” Our Will to win is based on love, hope, justice, liberty, democracy, all those positive qualities. Their Will to win is based in fear, greed, lies, and corruption. Our intent is honorable: we want to win truly and honestly by counting all the votes. They’re intent is to cheat and steal this election.

Our Will is stronger. Our intent is honorable.

      Pray, chant, wish, hope, visualize.

We are in Scorpio season. We’re between halloween and astrological Samhain. This is thought to be the time when our ancestors can hear and help us and affect change in our lives. It’s a magical and spiritual time. We just had a full blue moon on Halloween. These are thought to be powerful times. We can tap into that.

  30. grabbyhands says:

I’m trying to be excited and I AM happy, but I’ll feel better when an official declaration is made calling it for Biden. And I’m still expecting a shitstorm from now until Inauguration Day.

    • Suz says:

Best case scenario is that Dump flees the country or resigns so Pence can pardon him.

    • bluemoonhorse says:

I’m feeling more and more that Trump will slink off to Mar-a-Lago. Look at his last press conference – he could barely walk to the door.

      • Christin says:

He will bounce around his properties and possibly start campaigning again. Anything to bring in some dollars from someone else – taxpayers or anyone foolish enough to donate to his likely non-existent 2024 run.

      • bluemoonhorse says:

@Christin I do believe Letitia James (NY Attorney General) is going to have a January surprise for Trump and his family. He needs to be kept on the ropes.

  31. Ashley says:

I’m hopeful but still . . . The margin of his lead in PA and GA are still in recount territory. We need Biden’s lead to grow before we are safe.

    • Kkat says:

They are saying by the end of this Biden could be as much as 3 points ahead in Penn. So less likely a recount there

praying and hoping that his lead will hold!!!! I’m not even American, I’m an immigrant living in the UK. I remember 4 years ago, when I woke up, bleary eyed due to my 3 month old going through a growth spurt (it was Wednesday morning) and looked at my phone and the headlines declared dump at the president of the US and because I nearly got suck by the propaganda, I thought, maybe he won’t be so bad and I couldn’t understand how my friends in the US were heartbroken and crying. Then in the run up to his inauguration, red flags started popping up and wow, what an awful 4 years it has been to say the least not just for the US & the UK but in most of the world as well. The rise of the far right, racism, fascism amongst other things.
In the UK, we’ve gone through 2 Prime Ministers, Brexit and this current corrupt and self serving nut job who is hellbent on dragging the UK to the abyss in the midst of a pandemic.
I truly hope Joe Biden wins, if only to put a finger on the faces of the right wing leaders all over the world who support dump and his ilk.

    • Sarah says:

I agree with so much if what you’re saying here! Having spent the last four years saying to myself that at least we’re better off than the US, suddenly a move there is starting to seem, more appealing.

  33. Seth says:

Jesus. I feel hope? Hope? I can… breathe. I remember these things. It isn’t enough, not nearly… but… hope. Thank you thank you thank you thank you. So happy. Just going to let myself be happy today. Just going to enjoy this. It’s only going to continue to be awful and complicated and it shouldn’t be this slim of a lead but… hope wins. Thank you Kaiser. Thank you Celebitchy. You have been a light in dark places. Crying. We can do this.

  34. Seraphina says:

This is when we have to buckle up. Who knows what will unfold and we must hope for the best and expect the worst.

  35. MapleAngel says:

President Biden. Vice President Harris. All is right in the world.

  36. lolalola3 says:

I can’t celebrate yet. Wednesday left me too frazzled & heartbroken. I need more confirmation then I will open the 1 (ok, 2)… (ok, ok, I have 3, alright?? don’t judge me. it was on sale ) bottles of cheap champs in the fridge. But goddamn, the tension in my house for the last few days is just too much. I’ve aged 11 years in 3 days. HuffPo? Cnn? As soon as it’s confirmed, I’m drunk.

  37. Faithmobile says:

victory!! proud of democrats, proud of the spirit of John Lewis, proud of everyone who believed it was possible.!

  38. tee says:

i wish the rest of the media outlets would call it. this dragging out is annoying.

    • Case says:

They’re being as careful as possible waiting for votes to come in to call it. In normal years it would be an obvious call, but with that baby in the White House they want to be POSITIVE.

  39. CanadianK says:

Hi all, Canadian here (who would have guessed?). Can an American explain why it is so close? I just don’t understand how it was not a sweeping win after 4 year of rampant lying and disregard for the democratic system. It seems your rural has a huge disconnect from your cities. Most cities are blue and the rest is red. Is it lack of rural education that is playing a role?? Anyone have some hypotheses?

    • Becks1 says:

Well, there are lots of hypotheses, but I’ll try to offer a few.

      1) incumbents are hard to defeat, even BSC ones like Trump. the last presidential incumbent to lose was George HW Bush in 92, and before that it was Carter and Ford (I’m not really counting Ford bc that was a shitshow.) So it happens, but its harder than you might think.

      2) Racism – both the blatant, “I’m going to march with tiki torches and chant Nazi sayings” kind and the more subtle kind, the kind where white people think “the illegals are taking our jobs” or “my neighborhood is going downhill” bc a black family moved down the street. the classic “dog whistle” politics. That is a very strong force in the US.

      3) There is a strong feeling in many rural areas that the cities are full of “elite liberals” and cant connect with them – this feeling that someone like Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama just ‘doesn’t get it.” my MIL voted for Trump in 2016 and I assume this year because she felt he was more “down to earth” and “got it” more than HRC. (she lives in a very rural area of New Jersey). The fact that Trump isn’t down to earth is besides the point for the moment – its just that that’s what people are looking for. That was a BIG appeal of Bill Clinton – he could connect with the rural white voters.

and to a certain extent it is just different politics – different views on the role of government, taxation, etc. but I think that’s fading now because the Republican party doesn’t really hold to those ideals.

      • CanadianK says:

Thank you for your explanation! Wishing our neighbours to the south 4 years of prosperity. Can’t wait until we can come visit again (it’s going to be a long cold Covid winter)!

      • Becks1 says:

Also, just to point out like others have said, the electoral college gives more rural states a disproportionate impact on the election results, which is partly why the elections end up being so close when Biden is winning by 3-4 million popular votes. But the reasons for rural vs city being so divided and having such different voting patterns are varied and nuanced and there are many good resources out there for them. An interesting read for any so inclined is the Rise of Southern Republicans, by Merle and Earl Black, which charts exactly that…the rise of southern republicans, from pre civil rights to the early 2000s (book came out in 2002 I believe.) And part of that includes the growing divide between rural and urban. As we see here its not enough to say that the former Democrat strongholds flipped red. it was more complicated than that and we are seeing that play out now, especially as the southern states became more diverse AND barriers to voting for minorities were removed.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

Education plays a role, but the biggest problem is the use of the Electoral College system (look it up). It was devised in the late 18C to support the slave holding plantation states in order to bring them into the new United States. It has continued to be the root of much anti-democratic, anti-representative evil.

Rural areas don’t have a lot of votes relative to cities, but the Electoral College system favors them anyway, and land doesn’t vote – people do. The US has tried to pretend it’s about ‘balance’ but it’s not. It was always about racism.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

It IS about racism and xenophobia, but it’s also about the fact that the majority of Dems voted by mail, or dropped off ballots; Rs mostly voted on “the day” (fed by Moldy Orange’s inciting them). There are still a lot of places where all the ballots aren’t counted, almost 300 THOUSAND in GA were disenfranchised, a lot of Dems have been purged from the rosters (my nephew was among one in WI, and if we didn’t make him check, he wouldn’t have been able to vote!)… all these things contribute to not seeing the “Blue Wave” as big and strong as it should be.

    • Blair Warner says:

Canadian here too, and I can’t fathom it either. I understand the Electoral College system but truly thought we’d be seeing 65-70% of the popular vote for Biden – he’s a known entity, well-liked, experienced, non-objectionable, not Hillary, literally couldn’t be whiter – but instead, we see Trump winning six million more votes than he did in 2016? It’s baffling and just so depressing.

    • TeamAwesome says:

I can speak to a little bit about rural education because I’m an instructor at a community college in a rural area in a red state: we try, you guys. We try so hard, every day, to stress do the research, evaluate your sources, think it through. For every budding liberal I teach, and there are a few since I’m in the arts, there are three times as many conservatives. Pro life political ads are filmed against a backdrop of cammo and guns. My priest said Sunday he didn’t want to tell anyone who to vote for because of our non profit status. I assure you our neighbors at the Baptist church could not care less. A colleague’s English class was shocked to learn that the most votes didn’t mean you won. In our virtual presidential race debate the recurring questions from Republicans were all misinformation and Breitbart talking points. The struggle is real.

      • Esmom says:

Oh man, bless your heart. The battle against dubious sources must be especially frustrating because as wise and rational as you surely are, the pull of them is clearly just so strong.

      • Lady D says:

Speaking of Breitbart talking points, Steve Bannon has been kicked off Twitter permanently for suggesting Dr. Fauci and FBI Director Wray be decapitated because they weren’t pro-Trump enough.

    • cer says:

It’s also close because the electoral system is broke and outdated, and would be even without the GOP’s long-term policy of undermining the system.

    • bluemoonhorse says:

Another reason is voter suppression. The attack on the US Mail system, the belief that White Supremacists with guns would be at polls intimidating voters, Gerrymandering of districts to reduce the minority impact of the vote, and continual disinformation that the MSM reports as facts from the Trump camp, and social media (FB didn’t allow thousands of Biden ad buys the last week and continued Trump ads) all played a part.

There is also some deep ingrained racists in this country who don’t want to see their bank accounts dinged. Which shows how stupid they are as the Stock Market went down with Trump and goes up every time Biden gains. But racist, white Christians are pretty stupid people.

    • salmonpuff says:

I don’t think you can discount the fact that a lot of people here live in an entirely different reality from the rest of the world (and half the country). For example, my parents watch Fox News and my dad listens to Rush Limbaugh, and they truly, honestly believe that masks don’t work, the coronavirus is overblown, that socialism is “pure evil”, that the planet is warming because of a natural cycle that has happened before, that systemic racism doesn’t exist, that NPR is a far left news source…and on and on. When presented with actual facts, they brush them aside as lies because that’s what their news sources are telling them.

Absolutely racism is a huge factor (and why they’re so willing to believe scam artists like Trump and Rush Limbaugh). But it is impossible for us to even have discussions about issues because we’re living in two different realities.

    • Christin says:

I’ll provide a glimpse of voter thinking that I encountered yesterday. To clear my mind, I took a little drive to a beautiful rural town in the Virginia mountains. I stopped at a small produce stand to buy some locally grown apples. The man running the register was talking to a customer (also an older white man) as I walked in.

They were obviously discussing the election results pointing to Joe. One said he could not vote for any person who supported gay marriage. The other replied that his deal-breaker is abortion. He added that it might make him a bad person, but he just could not vote for a candidate of any party based on that one issue. The other man agreed – he felt the same.

These two men were saying out loud that ONE issue is their deal-breaker, no matter what other corruption or injustices are in front of their eyes, or their own self-interests. Their one-minute verbal exchange is not an isolated example of how some voters think.

      • bluemoonhorse says:

Yep it boils down to Gay Marriage and Abortion for many. I live in a Red State and that is what it is about. It’s why the younger vote (under 40) needs to be relentlessly and aggressively pursued.

      • Traveler says:

And the rest who really don’t care about abortion or gay marriage issues only care about their finances. They literally want an administration that finds every loophole for the rich to get richer, for taxes not to affect their pursuit of endless financial gain, for the cost of running and sustaining the country to be the burden of the middle-class. Money rules their voting………………to hell with the planet and its people as long as they are ok.

      • bluemoonhorse says:

@Traveler AGREE. Anti-Gay, Anti- Abortion, Gun Nuts, and money, is the GOP platform.

      • Amy Too says:

I absolutely believe there are one issue voters like this. I’ve actually seen some signs in my neighborhood that say “I vote Pro-Life. No matter what,” or something like that. But do these people not get that they themselves still have the choice to NOT get an abortion? Gay marriage being legal doesn’t mean they have to marry another man, and it doesn’t take anything away from their marriage to their wife, and it doesn’t make straight marriage less legal in any way? If it doesn’t affect you, why do you care? How many openly gay married couples are they encountering in rural Scuttlebug, Iowa where their closest neighbors are miles away? How many abortions are they personally being forced to witness?

And what makes me crazy about the “no gay marriage because it defies the sanctity of marriage” people is that so many of them are divorced or even on their third wife. The president is on his third wife. They’re fine with that. They want ALL THE LIBERTIES for themselves but not for anyone else.

And the gun nut people? No one is going to take your gun away unless it’s an illegal, unregistered gun, and we already have that law. A lot of Democratic gun control is stuff like background checks and closing loopholes that allow people who already shouldn’t be allowed to buy guns to buy guns. And maybe a ban on automatic/semi-automatic weapons. No one is taking your hunting rifle, shot gun, or hand gun. Are all of these guys secretly felons with a long and documented history of domestic violence or animal abuse (things that can flag you and slow down or prevent your gun purchase?) ? If not, no one is taking your gun. Even if they are, I doubt any new gun control laws would be retroactive. No one is coming to take your gun away. If you already have it, you’re fine. If you’re a “good guy” (as in “only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun”) then you’re going to continue to be able to buy guns.

A bittersweet victory, but at least a moment of respite. And then – back to work. We’ve got a lot of groundwork to lay over the next few years if we want to salvage this country.

  42. Andrew’s Nemesis says:

Biden is getting 68% of the new votes counted in Pennsylvania. Please God that this is the end of the Orange Mussolini. I’ve been praying for my American CB sisters, and the whole democratic world that has been tarnished by Trump’s appalling antics, for days. Bless you all.

  43. lemonylips says:

Go Biden! Go on USA, kick this orange monster idiot out! I’mma gonna have a drink. It’s 4 pm here in Croatia and sounds legit!

  44. Naomi says:

So relieved!!! Let’s remember it was Philadelphia/Black voters — NOT Scranton/white working class –who brought Joe across the finish line. All praise and gratitude to Philadelphians for PA going blue!!

    • ChillyWilly says:

Absolutely! Decent white folk (like me) have black folks to thank for this win for sure! We all need to stick together and keep on defeating the racist trash trying to take over OUR country!!

  45. Vava says:

I think this article is a bit irresponsible, to be honest. He hasn’t been declared the winner officially and yet this blog is making that proclamation. I’m all for Biden winning, but I’m also in favor of honest journalism…

    • Snuffles says:

Some news outlets are claiming it. Some are waiting.

    • Case says:

This is honest journalism! He is predicted to win PA – just math at this point. Once he wins PA, he wins the election.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

Well, first let’s remember that this is indeed a blog and not journalism. So the writer can say whatever she wants. If it’s her presumption Biden will be declared the winner, she can do that. If later facts prove her wrong, she can handle it. But she’s on pretty solid ground with the facts about the math of the votes, and in accord with most actual journalists covering the race.

If you really want to scold a self-proclaimed gossip blog for being “irresponsible” … be its guest. If anyone uses this as a news source, that’s on them. We each can decide how high we want to hold our hopes at this point.

    • Kaiser says:

      … you are asinine

    • teafortwo says:

Oh get a grip. This is a BLOG not a news site. But, if it makes you feel any better, Fox called AZ first, even ahead of the AP, and are right now reporting Biden ahead in both GA and PA.

    • bluemoonhorse says:

The reality here is that the remaining MAIL IN votes are trending Biden like 3 to 1. Not sure what there is not to understand?

      • Also Ali says:

        +1 Math FTW!

Once Biden took the lead, PA became his. It was just a matter of time.

Nothing is raining on my parade this morning.

      • Vava says:

The thing to understand is that you don’t declare a winner until the situation is OVER.

    • Leah says:

This is a celebrity blog, it’s not AP or the Washington Post.

They are currently counting the mail in ballots which lean heavily democratic. Trump told his minions to vote on Election Day, they did and those votes were counted first. Democrats who know the virus is a deadly mofo voted by mail and now their votes are being added.

He is 6 votes away from 270. Not that big of a jump.

    • Jaded says:

Are you saying AP and Washington Post political writers aren’t proper journalists? They do this every election, with accurate results. It’s OK to make educated assumptions on the outcome of elections, especially at the 11th hour when mail-in ballots, which are mostly Democratic, are flooding in and showing an uptick in votes for Biden.

We’re a pretty bright bunch here except for the occasional troll or MAGAT. Which one are you?

    • bluemoonhorse says:

LOL Fox and AP just declared AZ for Biden.

    • Katherine says:

@vava you… you do realize every presidential race is called without the vote being final? By reputable news sources? They use math not a crystal ball. The one time it was in issue was 2000 in Florida because it came down to such a specific problem making the votes close. That’s an extremely rare circumstance that had not happened before or since and is not happening this year. Biden is ahead with a growing lead in multiple places. Out of even recount range in most states. Decisions desks will start calling the race for him at any time based on their mathematical analysis. That even lay people can do with an excel spreadsheet if you wanted to. It’s not particularly complex. But here’s the kicker even once that happens they will keep counting votes. Every presidential election has the final numbers documented sometimes even months later. Usually after the person has been sworn in and everything. So this wait till it’s final preaching is a weird take. Math is your friend.

    • Lucky Charm says:

Numbers are all over the place! The AP 270towin shows him at 273 and has called PA. FOX shows him at 264 and called AZ and changed him to leading in NV, GA and PA. CNN still shows him at 253 and AK, AZ, NV, GA, NC and PA as too close to call.

  54. SpankyB says:

I was so sad when I went to bed on the 3rd. I was expecting to wake up to 4 more Trump years. I didn’t even turn on the news when I woke up, I didn’t want to see it. Not until I got to work did I get caught up and it was at that point that I knew Biden would win. Just a feeling. I’m glad it’s coming true.

At least Melania will be happy now. She won’t have to do the fucking Christmas decorations after this year.

  55. Midnight@theOasis says:

Wonder if there will be a spike in Covid cases since so many of Trump’s followers chose to vote in person on Election Day rather than do mail in voting.

  56. L4frimaire says:

I’m very relieved that Biden clinched it. And we have our first woman VP Kamala Harris! We’ve been so busy agonizing over this that we haven’t had time to realize how big this is as well as the major voter turnout. Everyone wants to do a Democratic autopsy because there wasn’t a huge blue wave, but look at Republicans and their egregious behavior. Do an autopsy on that and why an incumbent is losing by a huge margin, regardless of who he picked up. Also, vote by Mail should be permanent and limiting the vote backfired big time! Two competing things coming from Democrats and they are both right. Some pointed out using the word socialism and defund the police dragged down votes because it was too easy for opposition to manipulate their message. As someone said, don’t use those terms if that’s not exactly what you mean. You don’t have to be a socialist to push progressive reforms and changes. It’s the Democratic Party not the socialist party. Also, instead of just chasing moderate white voters, reward the base that has turned out for you. The black women, young people, progressives, city voters who turned up at the polls and did the ground work. If you show you will implement the changes they want, other voters will follow if they benefit as well. Even in states Biden lost, progressive measures like minimum wage increases and legal marijuana passed. Trump is finished, the courts won’t give him this election. He can temper tantrums all he wants, the power center has shifted. President Biden and Vice President Harris!

I hope when the day comes that Trump has to move out, the Secret Service drag him out kicking and screaming like the man-child he is. I’m sure nothing would give them more pleasure after dealing with him for the past 5 years.

Unfortunately, we still have many big problems in our country. Like the fact that half of it support a person like Trump. And there’s POS McConnell. So while I’m relieved that Biden will be president, I’m still so very sad that this is the country I live in. We need peace and unity.

“Ad astra per aspera” is Latin for “to the stars, through difficulties.” I first learned this motto in 4th grade, because it was on our state flag (Kansas). I have clung to this phrase in my heart throughout terrible times in my life. And no time has been more terrible for our earth, our country, and our fellow citizens than the past four years. But today I’m putting this motto down and claiming a new one–“Carpe diem.” Onward, Celebitchies!

  62. SJ Knows says:

    I have always voted Dem.

i.e. I’d vote for a yellow dog if he was the party candidate. And, I am proud to say the first POTUS candidate I was eligible to vote for was Jimmy Carter. A good and honest man, who was shafted by the political BS.

I pray for Biden and Harris to be strong, stay healthy and work damn hard to bring back basic rights and freedoms, to pull together against forces of hate and violence. I thought Obama had a full workload on his desk after Bush..but My God, Biden and Harris are going to need strong, solid, class A workaholics on their team to start shoveling the mess Trump has created.

I seriously hope that their teams are already holding battle plan meetings, calling up every qualified expert they can get ahold of.

I’m so old, I kinda wanna hear Tom Brokaw say “President Elect Biden has been confirmed across all 50 states as the winner, will be at work back at 1600 ASAP.” Really, Cronkite, Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, Anderson Cooper ALL of them Say it! 🙂

  65. Tia says:

Someone has obviously complained the BBC are only fact checking Trump’s statements. They’ve now started fact checking Biden’s as well. So far it’s going:

Biden says X…BBC: that’s true and here are the statistics to prove it

Biden says Y…BBC: that’s also true and here are the statistics to prove it

    Biden says Z….[and so on]

Somehow I don’t think that’s the result the complainers were hoping for. It’s a beautiful example of malicious compliance.

  66. Merricat says:

Trump insisted his supporters should vote in person. The mail-in ballots are predominantly left-leaning. Recounts won’t change anything in a significant way. Projected results are the norm, but news organizations are proceeding with caution because Trump is deranged.

    • Also Ali says:

Yes, and it is so frustrating. He’s going to continue to lie and deny the results regardless. Cowardly national media organizations.

      • Merricat says:

I think it’s more about making sure everything is done properly, rather than cowardice. It would be foolish to do otherwise with a lunatic who is looking for ways to cause chaos and confusion.

  67. SmittenKitten says:

I am hopeful but absolutely scared to allow myself to feel any kind of relief. This has been an EXTREMELY triggering event for me,the election. Having gotten out of an emotionally abusive relationship earlier this year,Trump reminds me a lot of my ex. The verbal jabs, the gaslighting, gaslight that, blame and finger pointing. Its been a really rough week emotionally. Im still traumatized from 2016. I just can’t let myself proverbially exhale until Biden is inaugurated. Not sure my spirit could handle another 4 years of Trump.

    • Wiglet Watcher says:

As I understand it all states give their final tallies and trump can challenge the counts in any state within a 1% difference at his personal and campaign cost. He spent all of that so he likely will try to sue the individual states, but he can’t because everything was done meticulously.

They can only cry about it. The AP is respected and unbiased. This is a done deal.

Now the SS and FBI with other orgs have ramped up security for the president elect and vp elect to be sworn in in what I’m sure will be months that feel like years.

I never looked at it that way. When my mum texted me the news and I looked at the map I thought “PA is the one that did this? It’s like everyone wanted PA to be the one to call it”. I was thinking it was because the other states had better Republican connections and didn’t want to be the “bad” guys. This makes so much more sense now. Could be a strategy too to ameliorate a narcissist. Considering all the slow Nevada memes I’m surprised this theory hasn’t been voiced as much. Oh well, those NV memes were great! The one with the little kid taken his time to get to the plate makes more sense now. He had a plan-he knew what he was doing!🤣
