Prince William apparently can’t believe ‘The Crown’ would dredge up the past…??

Meghan Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry, Prince William, Catherine Duchess of Cambridge at the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force, Buckingham Palace, London, UK on Tuesday 10th July 2018

Piers Morgan had a predictable hissy fit about The Crown Season 4. I wouldn’t even give him any air, but I actually read his whole diatribe and I found a couple of sections kind of interesting. Piers actually complimented the season and said that it was a great drama, although he (of course) nitpicked the historical accuracy. The monarchy and the royal commentariat really think they’re doing “death by a thousand paper cuts” on a prestige Netflix series, when all they’re doing is promoting it and getting more people to watch it. But! Piers explicitly quotes a “royal source” close to Prince William about the series, which is the closest I’ve seen to any comment from Kensington Palace. Thus far, it’s just been Buckingham Palace and Clarence House doing damage control on how they mistreated Diana. Piers also makes a completely convoluted argument about Prince Harry, which I’m including too:

The royals are incandescent?? Little wonder the Royals are said to be incandescent over it. Prince William, in particular, is reported to be enraged at the way his parents are being ‘exploited’ and ‘presented in a false, simplistic way to make money.’ A royal source close to him told the papers: ‘In this case, it’s dragging up things that happened during very difficult times 25 or 30 years ago without a thought for anyone’s feelings. That isn’t right or fair, particularly when so many of the things being depicted don’t represent the truth.’

Harry doesn’t seem to share William’s view: In fact, far from being outraged by Netflix making a fortune by rubbishing the royals like this, Harry’s response has been to join his wife Meghan in striking their own massive multi-million-dollar deal with them. By doing so, Harry is literally accepting money made from humiliating his own family, especially his own mother whose experience with the press he constantly holds up to demand greater deference for his wife Meghan. And now, as a storm of controversy grows over this appallingly hypocritical decision, he’s shut his eyes, stuck his hands over his ears, and buried himself into the sands of Santa Barbara in the desperate hope nobody will notice the astoundingly two-faced nature of his behaviour….If Harry had any integrity left, he’d tear up his Netflix deal right now and apologise to his family for colluding with the enemy in such a distasteful manner. But he won’t.

[From The Daily Mail]

The quote from a source close to William is so ridiculous, I actually believe it *did* come from William! “How dare Netflix make a popular, acclaimed, award-winning series about my family of public figures, WHAT ABOUT MY FEELINGS.” As for what Piers says about Harry… “Harry is literally accepting money made from humiliating his own family…” Piers literally makes HIS money from humiliating and smearing members of the royal family, so what’s his point? That’s the thing I don’t get about the royal commentators all having hissy fits about The Crown – Peter Morgan is merely dramatizing the same stories and narratives which have been driving the royal press pack for decades. It’s insane.

  1. Elizabeth says:

Piers just refusing to admit the obvious parallel between the hounding of Diana in the press and his own relentless hounding of her daughter-in-law 30 years later is the most hypocritical stance possible. Even he can’t actually buy that.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

He doesn’t. But he is banking on the hate he’s generated about Meghan to continue to blind his followers. He is now getting a bit more push back for his anti Meghan stance. He will carry on to save face but he knows that H and M have more powerful friends than he could ever imagine. His day of reckoning awaits. Karma will come for him in more ways than one.

  2. Kalana says:

Dan Wooten has come out in favor of the show. I think Piers is also Charles rather than William and Charles is trying desperately to find some kind of righteous indignation to be against the show.

Lol. Can’t you picture Charles walking around somewhere yelling about what does it take to get some sympathy?

Kate really has completely overdone it with the fillers. It’s like she has a plastic mold under her skin. The images of her in the red blazer were even worse. I think she lightened her hair temporarily as a distraction.

  3. Erinn says:

I see both sides of this. It’s a popular show and they’re going to create the storylines that they know are of most interest to people.

But my god, it’d be incredibly difficult seeing your parents marriage play out on tv- especially the stuff that happened while you either weren’t yet born or when you were too young to understand.

But there’s ALWAYS been massive inaccuracies in The Crown. They don’t shy away from that. The writer basically is like “well … it’s plausible” but it’s not accurate for plenty of scenes. There are so many articles written about the things that they got wrong – partially because yes, they are biased, but also because they’re making a drama series. They weren’t present for the actual events – this is a human making a script and having to streamline scenarios to fit into a certain amount of episodes. The thing that gets me though is that it seems like so many people take it as gospel. It’s a dramatization. So while we might be rooting for a comeuppance of certain family members – keep in mind they KNOW that’s what you want and they’re going to make sure things are laid out in a specific way. It doesn’t at all mean that it’s what happened – and there are plenty of times where things have been changed for the show.

Ultimately though – it MUST be incredibly awkward to be Harry and William. Say what you will about Will (he deserves plenty of shit thrown his way) but I can’t imagine seeing something as painful as his parents marriage being a show for people to ogle at and cheer over – especially when plenty of creative liberties are taken on this series. It would suuuuuck.

    • Kalana says:

But William also loves rubbing his parents’ bad marriage in his father’s face. He recreates moments to create a comparison between his family and his father’s choices. He’s not above making other people relive painful memories or shrugging off their pain. I don’t feel sorry for him about this.

      • MsDiMeanOur says:

William does what benefits him. and no one else.

right now he’s keen in playing the sympathy card to garner attention from the UK public.. so that he is again thrust into the spotlight. boohoo….

the never-ending drama of a narcissist.

      • Elizabeth Regina says:

To be fair he did inherit the worst traits from his parents. Diana’s flair for the dramatic and his father’s rages and jealousy.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

“Harry is literally accepting money made from humiliating his own family…”

Let’s not forget PwBT was MORE than happy to associate with Netflix and David Attenborough himself, to the point of not only cooperating/working with him, but holding a screening (complete with his & his named director chairs!). And he’d literally PEE himself if they offered him a deal like H&M got.

        So yeah…NOT buying this bullshyte.

      • Mac says:

William could just, you know, not watch it.

      • Wiglet Watcher says:

William has no card to play here. He drudges up his mother however and wherever he pleases for selfish reasons. He has skipped events that honor her before both publicly and privately. Unless he benefits directly he doesn’t appear to bother. And that is sad. I’m sure he misses her, but I believe that family plays whatever to their advantage.

      • Tessa says:

I remember how William turned down the invite to a book signing honoring Diana’s charity work, and the media found him partying blocks away during the event. Harry was out of the country at the time.

    • Lizzie says:

The casting was announced months ago so while William was promoting Netflix for David Attenborough he was well aware that his parents marriage would be part of season 4. Has he apologized? No of course not but let’s demand Harry should. Piers is gross.

      • Tessa says:

Where was William’s outrage when Penny Junor had a go at his mother in her books, and she is a friend of Charles and Camilla.

    • ABritGuest says:

To me this sudden outrage about the Crown’s accuracy is only an issue because its making some of the family look unpleasant in a way they aren’t used to in recent times. It was fine when it was largely making them sympathetic. Before the news was Queen, Eugenie, Zara, Wessexes all watched and loved the Crown. Even Anne said last year first episodes were interesting. If it was about feelings, where was this outrage when it was alluding to Philip possibly cheating or being a harsh father to Charles? If the Firm had kept that energy from the first season then this outrage would seem less opportunistic.

I can see why it’s hard to have this painful chapter dredged up again for all involved. But I would have more sympathy for the royals if they showed they had learnt from the past & didn’t actively collude with the press who spread the worst of the gossip about Diana & Charles, including using such press to brief against or leak false stories about other royals. Strong suggestions that Thomas Markle stories were part of a Faustian bargain. They didn’t care about Meghan’s feelings over that or all those leaks about wanting Harry back only but we should care about a dramatised tv series?

The Crown doesn’t even include stuff like Camilla wasn’t Charles only married lover, paedo allegations against Lord Mountbatten as well as Thatchers ruthlessness over miners etc. The writers even elected not to reference their closeness with Jimmy Saville.

I’m sure Peter Morgan, who claims he liaises with palace each season, will be back to making them more sympathetic in final seasons so they should relax.

      • Desert Lizard says:

ABritGuest, you put it all in perspective. Yes, this season is hard to watch bc we know they did, indeed, destroy Diana. Many of us watched it as it unfolded in real life and it was hideous but now, knowing how it all ended, it’s very painful to watch.

Just as I was beginning to think poor Will and Harry, I recalled how they have condoned (read that as contributed to) the way Meghan was publicly brutalized and how they insisted she bear it while rushing to Katie’s defense over botox and extensions. They truly sicken me. Now, my sympathy lies only with Harry.

You are right in that the show has left out events that could be even more devastating to Charles. I rather wish they had shown the other infidelities. It would make Camilla seem less special somehow and then the truth would be out for all regarding Charles’ idea of marriage as he waits to become leader of the CoE.

    • Suz says:

I often have to remind myself that this is historical fiction and not exactly what happened. Fiction filled in around some actual events. I know more about Tudor history than Windsor history from endless reading about that dynasty, but even when I’d watch the Tudors and KNEW the inaccuracies, I still had to remind myself.

    • Myra says:

This is the first time I can relate to him being angry. It was a difficult moment in his life and it probably took him years to forgive his own father. However, they all knew this season was coming. They probably thought that The Crown will continue to portray them through rose-tinted glasses. It’s like The Crown lulled them into a false sense of security before putting them on blast.

    • Maria says:

He’s happy to live at Anmer Hall where the van Cutsems facilitated the extramarital meetings between Camilla and Charles while Diana was ignored.
I honestly don’t think he cares about this for the reasons you and I would.

    • Anne Call says:

I agree. Incredible painful to have to deal with it and be reminded, especially her children be reminded, that this young shy women is dead now. I’m having some problem with that part of it. I’ll watch, but the whole thing is sad and I feel bad for both of the sons.

  4. lanne says:

This is the dude who tried to break into James Hewitts house to steal Diana’s letters. F him. Why does this incompetent fool even have a job? His behavior toward Meghan should have gotten him fired for stalking. He acted like a jealous toxic ex boyfriend. His antics make me side eye British media as a whole.

  5. Digital Unicorn says:

This is all about the Sussex Netflix deal and the money they will make from it AND about Willileaks and the UK rags not being able to control/use them – its really that simple.

At some point the UK tabloids are going to start dropping the payload on the Cambridges and the Middletons. Cain’s rose bush trimming will be the first thing, if not that it will another of his many dalliances.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

I agree. Willileaks is an opportunist. Leaking his ‘concern’ about his parents’ marriage being exploited by Netflix while at the same time instructing his PR machine to brief against his dad and brother. Sickening really. I am so waiting for all his activities to come to light. The press have no permanent friends. Only permanent interests.

  6. Sofia says:

The Crown is not Netflix’s only show nor is it the only show that makes it money. I mean, William worked with ITV for his documentary and they had a show called Spitting Image which mocked the BRF quite a bit.

    • BayTampaBay says:

The most recent Richard Attenborough documentary, that William promoted, was also a Netflix show.

    • MsDiMeanOur says:

there are quite a few netflix docu-series about Diana AND the BRF. this fuss is not worth the paper its being written on
again.. this is just the BRF trying to hide something bigger
is there something else about PeadoAndy that needs to be hidden?

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

He worked with ITV after his documentary was rejected by Netflix. Once again, Harry emerges triumphant and Wills couldn’t stand it. The ratings for the ITV show was so low, less than half of the ratings his grandmother got in fact. He needs to face the fact that he simply hasn’t got the it factor.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Ah i had forgotten that Netflix turned down WIllileaks – how very dare they, don’t they know WHO I AM. I AM KING BILLY THE BASHER.

I remember the vitriol that came out over the Oprah deal – haven’t heard anything about that in a while.

      • Nyro says:

All he ever had were pretty boy looks, which lasted all of, like, four years. William is that dude who peaked in high school and just can’t understand why the real world is not at all impressed with him.

  7. Oh says:

It is the same source that told him that William advised Harry to marry one of the dim blonde Young conservatives

  8. RoyalBlue says:

When the shoe is on the other foot it doesn’t feel as right eh Billy boy. It’s fine to send people to dredge up Meghan’s past, her old school friends, ex husband etc. and have smears posted all over the Daily Fail, but oh poor little boy in his feelings can’t face a little story in the press. playing the smallest violin over here,

  9. BlueSky says:

There are like half a dozen documentaries on Netflix about the royal family. The last one I watched was “The Windsors” I believe which really did not paint them in a good light, but yeah sure go off about a show that’s in its 4th season.

    • Harper says:

Yes, but The Windsors portrays Will as a good-hearted, albeit bumbling, air-ambulance pilot who is the savior to the monarchy. Charles is appropriately portrayed as an imbecile, Camilla a witch, and Kate as a gypsy. All okay with Will’s feelings.

      • SomeChick says:

I don’t understand what “as a gypsy” means. Can anyone enlighten me?

      • Harper says:

In the show, Kate comes from a family of gypsies, not the middle-class. Upon checking my facts, I found an old article that said Prince William loves The Windsors, especially the fact that they made Kate a gypsy. No enraged reaction to those inaccurate storylines!

  10. Becks1 says:

“colluding with the enemy” LOL give me a break. They don’t care that Harry and Meghan signed a deal with the big bad Netflix. They care what that deal symbolizes.

As for the quote – you know, I can believe this particular season (and the next two) are problematic for the royal family because they are bringing up things that the royals have tried for decades to gloss over. I can also imagine it would be painful to have something like your parents divorce hashed out in the papers and morning shows yet again (because lets be honest, its never really stopped being a topic of discussion.)

But this is the part of the downside of being royal. Your life is open for public consumption. Now we can argue the morals around that and around what should be off limits and what shouldn’t be, but after the past 2 years, William loses all right to make the argument that some things should be off limits, considering how he treated his brother and SIL.

    • MsDiMeanOur says:

      TWO MORE SEASONS?

you made my day! thank you

on that note… there is nothing normal or functional in the BRF. they need to be disbanded and the crown abolished. bunch of grifters who love attention.. that is all that they are.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

I wonder if in the last season the writers will cover the Sussex and Cambridge drama?!?!?!?

      • Sofia says:

No it won’t. Peter Morgan has stated he doesn’t like writing things that aren’t at least 20 or so years old and that he’s not going to be the one writing their story

Season 5 will most likely end in 97 and then Season 6 will go up to 2003 (Golden Jubilee)

      • Becks1 says:

That’s my guess too Sofia. It will be interesting to see if we’re right. Season 5 ends either with Diana’s death or funeral, and then season 6 ends up with the jubilee/Margaret’s death/queen mother’s death.

  11. HK9 says:

Bitch please. This is part of his family history, like all the other crap. He didn’t have to watch it. Those of us who are sensible, know that it was probably much worse behind closed doors, and that would be triggering, but hey, we commoners deal with trauma all the time, he’s not special in that regard.

  12. MellyMel says:

William should hush and count his lucky stars the show isn’t gonna show his love of Roses. Like literally everything depicted in the show has been “out there” for years and talked about in books, specials and documentaries. I really don’t get why the BRF are freaking out about this one show.

  13. GuestWho says:

William is the Prince of Irony. Sold his brother and his pregnant wife to the same tabloids that destroyed his mother, and he’s surprised that people play fast and loose with accuracy? A-hole.

On another note, and because I’m in lock down mode and cannot spread the news from the rooftops – I have a brand new granddaughter today!!!! She’s fat, healthy, beautiful, and apparently extremely loud.

  14. Snuffles says:

I would have a smidge of sympathy that it’s opening up old wounds but they ALWAYS turn it into “How DARE Harry sign a Netflix deal!! He must back out of it to make things right!”

This isn’t about anyone’s feelings. It’s always been about the Sussex’s Netflix deal which was the final mail in the coffin in their hopes of getting Harry back into the fold.

    • So agree Snuffles. Everyone from the Queen to nasty Piss Morgan could have complained at least 18 months or so ago when it was announced that Season 4 would go forward, the time period it would cover, and the fact they were looking to cast the part of Diana. What did we hear from any of them? Zip, Zero, Nada. Now all of a sudden they’re all loosing their minds over the show. This is mostly about Harry and Meghan’s deal with Netflix that clearly told everyone in the royal family and the Royal Rota Rats that Harry and Meghan were …..to quote Taylor Swift…..”never, ever getting back together” with any of them. Bullies just hate it when the victim escapes. In addition, this is a drama based on the malicious behavior towards their own which has already been revealed in countless documentaries and well researched biographies that have been in the public domain for years: Most of it much uglier and more vicious then The Crown presents. I’ve got zero sympathy for the lot of them! Oh, and by the way William, it’s called an historical dramatization which means fiction based on HISTORY. Must have had someone else sit in for you at Uni when they discussed the difference between the two.

      • Dee Kay says:

I super duper agree with your take, @Lowcountry. The outrage is about bullies resenting and despising their victims for permanently escaping their abusive control.

  15. Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

The incandescence of the BRF just might be able to serve as a carbon-free energy alternative. Bring it on!

  16. Harla says:

Wow, so much of the argument that Piers and the other royal reporters have about the Crown mirrors their own reporting of Meghan, unfair, not right and not representing the truth.

    • A says:

@Harla, I wonder if they know, that 30, 40 years down the line, they’re going to be the villains in this story? That none of these royal reporters will come off looking good?

  17. Ginger says:

The RF and media are SO pissed Harry and Meghan got that Netflix deal. When The Crown was announced, we all knew they would cover the Diana years. This isn’t a surprise. We also know how horrible Charles treated Diana. No surprise.

The media treated Diana like crap but Harry was expected to work with them.

    • Becks1 says:

Its the one time I’ve agreed with Dan Wootton, who said something about Charles treating Diana like crap and how THAT HAPPENED!!! (all caps too lol). and its true – we knew the Diana years were coming on the Crown, and we knew it would make Charles look bad because guess what, he treated her horribly and the whole marriage was just a disaster.

      • Nic919 says:

It felt wrong that I agreed with Wootton but the rest of them are trying to pretend the cheating didn’t happen. Diana was 19 and he was 32. You can’t explain the power difference away here. And it looks worse the more they try.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

That’s exactly it. I am however happy that this is playing out to a global audience. The BR think the world begins and ends with them. Thankfully historical archives of their own bullshit articles is now being used against them. The sheer hypocrisy.

      • Ginger says:

The British media are so upset because they have worked hard to push the narrative that Harry turned his back on the Queen and his country. Now people are praising Harry for leaving. They are scrambling. It’s glorious to see.

      • Myra says:

That’s a good point, Ginger. I’ve seen a lot of people expressing their understanding for the move so The Crown has really shattered this notion that Meghan isolated Harry from his beloved family. A timely reminder that even Diana, an aristocrat, was treated like sh*t by this family – Meghan never stood a chance.

    • Lizzie says:

We all know it was true but this reminds me of a certain president who relentlessly shouts that he won when he lost resoundingly.

  18. Amy Bee says:

This is all about Harry having a deal with Netflix nothing else. The press expected him and Meghan to struggle on their own and then come back after a year begging the Royal Family for forgiveness. That’s not going to happen and the press is angry about that.

As for Harry’s feelings about the Crown, no one really knows but I suspect that he may not be as angry as the others in the family are, especially after what he’s been through these last four years.

    • Noki says:

Its not even a deal woth NETFLIX ,its about Harry and especially Meghan making tons of money. They just cant stomach it,and boy did they under estimate Meghan. She is way too independant to wait around for their scraps.

      • Chrissy (The Original) says:

This! They were just waiting to whine about H&M’S needing to rely on Charles’ financial help forever. The Royals really underestimated the power couple that H & M are and that they don’t need his family at all. Also, it’s extra satisfying that Harry is getting the recognition for his work and his potential after being belittled and overshadowed by PWT’s BS after all these years. Freedom must taste so sweet to the Sussexes!

  19. tee says:

Why in the hell would Harry be loyal to a family that betrayed him and his wife every chance they got? And further, loyal to the extent that he’d be willing to sacrifice is livelihood? Well that’s completely nonsensical.

  20. JT says:

I know many people are saying that Netflix is opening up old wounds and that it is painful for the RF,(like they gave a damn about Diana) particularly Harry and Will, but were the wounds really closed? Since Diana’s death 20 years ago, the BM and the royals have been cashing in on her memory. The royals use Diana for good PR when they want to and destroy her when needed. All of these RR have continued to write about her, the same events in The Crown, for literally decades. Kate doesn’t help matters trying to recreate iconic Diana moments, like the presenting of the boys and other moments. Will continues to work with the exact same media that destroyed her. When was there a time when they’ve let her rest? The wounds have never and will never close because Diana was that iconic, even from the grave she outshines those idiots (which must kill them). And yes, The Crown is a dramatization but the core elements of the show, like their treatment of Diana, are all true. This is nothing but crocodile tears from the royals to the reporters who don’t like being called out. People have been posting receipts on Twitter and can see the truth. They’d do well to stick to their often brushed aside mantra never complain, never explain.

    • Becks1 says:

YES. “Diana” as a figure has never stopped being talked about in the press. The press and the BRF has never stopped using her for whatever reason it suits them. As you pointed out, KATE uses her memory on a regular basis. Kate has her engagement ring! Its not like the wounds ever closed.

      • JT says:

The outrage is meaningless. Hell, the royals cash in on themselves. How many documentaries about them have been released with their approval? How many sanctioned bios have been written? They just want to continue to smear Diana, making her out to be crazy, manipulative, and fragile to justify their poor treatment of her, just like they are doing to H&M. The royals want to be the only ones in control of Diana’s memory. They’re upset about the loss of control and that the truth is more damaging than the lies they’ve been spreading for decades. I personally don’t give a damn that Diana had to be conniving and ruthless, which many attack her for, she was only 19! Look what she was up against! I can’t believe people think that is a valid argument.

  21. Lizzie says:

I’d like Baldy to point out, and back up, just one inaccuracy about his parents in Season 4 of The Crown.
It’s all true. Actually it would have been worse if they had shown Diana throwing herself down the stairs while pregnant.
Baldy phoned his mother screaming about the tv interview, I guess he is still incandescent after all this time.

    • February-Pisces says:

Not only is it true, but I imagine that reality was 1000x worse. I think this season was still soft on them, it could have been way worse. I remember hearing Diana threw herself down the stairs when she was pregnant with William and the queen mum literally stepped over her to walk past her. I think Charles was lucky because the actor who played him was much more likeable than the real thing.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Reported that QM did. And Charles left her there to go riding, saying something to the effect that he wasn’t going to go in for her “stunts”. They’re all cold, selfish, self-centered SOBs.

    • Suz says:

I will defend teenaged William in a rage over his mother’s interview – I would have reacted the same way if my mother did an interview seen by the entire world about her loveless marriage to my father and revealing that she had an affair too. He was a kid, that had to be crushing to hear and humiliating that the whole world now knew his parents were a mess.
I go back and forth with him being upset about it now – of course he is – these are his parents! On the other hand, he does the same thing by running to the press to demonize his own brother and his brother’s wife. So. Not really feeling too bad for him now.

      • Tessa says:

Was he in a rage over his Dad’s confessing he was involved with Mrs Parker Bowles? And also admitting to his biographer he never loved Diana.

    • A says:

He knows it’s all true–and he knows it’s likely worse than what was portrayed on the show.

All of this outrage boils down to control, essentially. The royals are angry they can’t control the message here. They’re angry they’re not in charge of how the narrative is being shaped. The biggest boon Charles and co. received from Diana’s death was the ability to control the narrative all on their own, without anyone to counter that shit. They can put out their side to their heart’s content, and Diana can’t defend herself from beyond the grave. But unfortunately for everyone, she left enough of a legacy that it does that work for her. So Charles stays losing, as they say.

And with William, it’s the same thing. He can’t control the narrative. He doesn’t want his parents’ marriage discussed–unless it benefits *him* in some way. All of these people are essentially battling for how they can use Diana’s legacy for their own benefit. Charles wants to shape it so that it’s more sympathetic to him and Camilla. William wants to do the same thing for himself. The Queen and her camp either don’t care very much, or they want to defend their own treatment of Diana so that they can acquit themselves. But none of these people are concerned beyond their own selfish desires. They all only care about how things can be good for them. And that’s their primary issue with this show, because the primary beneficiaries are Diana herself, and the showrunners, who should get all the awards for the work they’ve done because they deserve it.

  22. February-Pisces says:

How many documentaries have itv and the bbc made about the royals? Too many to count. That doesn’t stop Charles and Willie working with them to show their own ‘documentaries’. Lol at the British media saying that Netflix are cashing in on royals. They really have no shame at their hypocrisy. I did this before but how many newspaper editors has Willie worked with, that hounded Diana when she was alive? These people are just salty that harry and Meghan have come out on top with their deal, whilst Willie got rejected.

I really hope the creators of the crown are taking note and decide to go a little tougher on the royals next season. It’s what they deserve. The crown did amazing things for the royals image, so they are incredibly short sighted to piss them off.

    • A says:

Charles worked on the most devastating and most revealing documentary of all, with Jonathan Dimbleby, where HE, on CAMERA, admitted to having an affair, while married to Diana. And that was ALL him. It wasn’t some show that made up that interview. HE did that. And he did that to try and defend himself in the media, and it backfired completely.

So to hear someone from his camp whinge about how this is all so exploitative, when it’s like…my fucking guy, what are you on about? You were okay exploiting YOURSELF when you thought you could defend yourself somehow, and you still do that! Why is it different when The Crown does it?

      • Mignionette says:

Charles did that interview to blow up his marriage and finally force the Queen to allow him to get a divorce.

That is how selfish Charles was, he did a TV interview that he knew his children would see, just so he could be with his mistress.

  23. equality says:

Just more hypocrisy. The “working” royals all support the tabloids that lied about and dissected H&M’s every move. These are also the same papers that FIRST told the scandals involving Charles and Di. It’s okay for the royals to work with the BBC (aired the Diana interviews and took advantage), ITV (royal parodies), Mail on Sunday, Daily Mirror (published the recordings to reveal Tampongate). Loyalty is only expected of Harry. And, previously to this season and H&M signing with Netflix, the royals were all laughing off the Crown.

  24. S808 says:

Boo fucking hoo. Diana has never ever stopped being talked about in British media so for RRs to slam The Crown is hilarious. We’ve known for MONTHS that The Crown would be diving into the Diana years. It was known info when William worked with David for his nextflix documentary so that argument is moot too. They’re just mad that thru Nextflix, Harry has achieved the independence none of them have and he wasn’t supposed to do that, especially within 1 year of leaving. And quite frankly I do not care about William’s feelings especially since he’s following his father footsteps of being emotionally abuse and a cheater.

    • A says:

Not months–years. We knew from the start of the show they’d cover the Diana years. Which is exactly why I find all of this just so funny and infuriating–where was the outrage about it all those years ago? And how is the show, which has had THREE seasons so far, only exploitative in its fourth?

  25. The Duchess says:

Be careful what you wish for, Baldy. They’ll be dredging up your affair next.

  26. Ariel says:

So i midway through season 4, and i do wonder if willie’s tantrums look like charles’ attitude toward diana. He only thinks of himself. He probably does get passive aggressive and upset when Kate steals his thunder. No wonder she is so dull. She is older than Diana, and was with him for many years, so she has learned how to manage his baby tantrums and their relationship. How to make him the star.
Seems like a lot of work to protect a fragile man’s ego.

  27. mercyme says:

With this one season of The Crown, Charles is seeing 20+ years of PR rehab go down the drain. “William’s” leaked outrage sounds more like Charles using one of his sons for cover to publicly whine about his feelings about how unfair and untrue this all is (to him). As we know from years ago, Charles is not above using his sons for cover to get his story out there and/or get positive PR off his sons’ backs.

William gets outraged easily over silly things but over this? I doubt he cares much now about how The Crown makes Charles look, especially since it’s not going to negatively impact William’s own PR. Then he might care. If William and/or Harry care at all about anyone depicted this season, William and/or Harry would likely only care about this exploiting Diana.

  28. Likeyoucare says:

Ooh willie, you shouldnt be worried about they were dredging the past. You shoud be worried about the crown dragging your future scandal.
Next season, they might be making about your teenager’s antic and your raging scandal that the BRF trying to burried.

  29. bettyrose says:

Ugh stop making my feel sympathy for them. My parents turned my childhood into a hot dramatic mess, and the thought of any of that being dredged up and displayed for public consumption is so horrifying. But of course their hot dramatic mess played out in the public eye and they regularly run to the tabs to report on one another, so it’s not like any of this is new to them. And yeah of course the cost of their privileged position is that it’s in the public sphere to be viewed and scrutinized (and I watch the hell out of the Crown. Except for S3, I plan to continue binding each season multiple times).

Eh, I take it back. Give me palaces and jewels and never-ending days in the countryside with my animals and I’ll live with having my family drama broadcast on Netflix.

    • A says:

@bettyrose, the thing is, they’ve been public figures their whole life. They’ve had to have given some thought to how contemporary portrayals of them are going to be. It’s unfortunate that this is the case, but they’re in a position where they know this, and have the means to do the prep to deal with it accordingly.

If someone shook up the story of my parents’ marriage (and every marriage has a story), made a movie of it without their consent, and misrepresented them and embellished shit in the process, they’d be angry, but the fact is, they didn’t sign up for that shit. I know this is a very victim-blamey thing to say, and I hate having to say this, but the truth is that details of the royal family’s private lives are out there for public consumption already. Some of that information is stuff the royal family has put out there on their own. Charles did a whole cringe interview with Jonathan Dimbleby where he let the man see his own private journals for material for a written biography. He puts his own life out there for public consumption. The lives of his mother and father, their marriage, have already been dramatized by the show. No outrage about that, somehow. But THIS, oh, THIS is somehow beyond the pale.

  30. Suz says:

Just stating the obvious, William’s jealousy of Harry’s popularity is just Charles v. Diana 2.0. It’s sad to see this recycle in the next generation.

    • Beck says:

They show the never ending cycle

The heir being arrogant and demanding
The spare feeling lost and acting out. Realizing they are more popular until they aren’t

Happened with Elizabeth and Margret, Charles and Andrew and William and Harry

    • S808 says:

Right down to claiming Harry has mental health issues. It’s why I have no sympathy for William.

  31. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

If I could have any job in the world, it’d be to help Celebitchy pick pics for bylines lol. I can only imagine how much fun it is, I’d be roflmao all day, every day.

  32. SO Dumb says:

When he says incandescent I hope he realizes everyone imagines him like Uncle Fester. Geez is the guy ever *not* mad?!

  33. DS9 says:

This argument is so tired and beyond self involved.

Why is the pain of the royal family, who made their own damned beds more worthy of consideration than the pain of virtually any ‘based on a true story dramatized depiction?

Chernobyl is just a recent, far more devastating, and yet I haven’t heard nearly half the bitching as we’re hearing from the Royals and their adjacent.

I can’t help but read all these hurt feelings and think of the situation going on in Ireland over the same period of years and wish these people would can it with their whining.

  34. Beck says:

While I don’t believe William said that- I have to be honest I wouldn’t blame him or Harry for being mad about this season.

This was their MOTHER, and probably the only person to give them love and affection until they met their spouses and it shows that their father and step mother tortured her, Charles comes off abusive in this.

I can see both of them not liking it and feeling like their mother’s pain is being exploited for viewers. They are public figures and historical ones at that so they really don’t get to say they can’t do the show but they can be upset and hurt by it.

I mean after they lost their mother they were left with that family and William has to deal with them. But I think it makes sense why he is so crazy about Kate’s family and Harry so much wanted to leave.

The queen and Charles are behaving ridiculously about this, but I think you have to give Diana’s sons a bit of a break.

I can’t imagine watching something like that about my mom.

    • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

@Beck This reminds me of something my nephew told me once. He’s been dealt a pretty severe hand in the mental health department. During the last good day I saw him, he told that being misunderstood and not listened to does more harm than the actual illness. That just about broke me. I can see how that may apply to Charles but in no way excuses his poor behavior.

Once again, not excusing Charles’s cruelty and abuse, but when has anyone ever listened to him or tried to truly understand him other than Camilla (who I doubt even put in that much of an effort)? I think that has led to him being in some dark places of the mind. Still, the whole situation with Diana should have been handled better and with the realization that she was in fact a person, not some brooding mare.

Had Charles truly sat her down when they were dating and honestly explained the situation. I think it would have saved a lot of heartache for her and the boys.

If Daisy and Henrik could sit down and explain their marriage to Fredrick and Joachim, Charles could have easily done the same.

      • Maria says:

NotSoSimpleTaylor – he could have done this, but he didn’t.
The problem was he didn’t want Diana to understand the situation.
He’d made up his mind what he was going to do. And I doubt he would have considered anything she said on the topic as relevant.

      • Tessa says:

Camilla was out for number one and she knew how to manipulate. She probably said things like OH nobody appreciates you Charles, and people should be paying attention to YOU not Diana who is not as BRILLIANT as you are. And this earned her power and privilege for herself.

    • Maria says:

I am sure part of their private feelings include what you said. But as far as a public response like this – this program is far from the first to depict this relationship and what happened. Diana’s death didn’t change the BRF into a normal healthily functioning family. The same crap went over afterwards that went on before. And that included them throwing William/Harry under the bus from time to time. Naturally, people are going to comment on that and it will be reflected in culture.

I doubt Harry is that upset since it appears that while his son being compared to a chimpanzee was not considered worthy of a press response, this television show, that nobody ever stated was 100 percent factual, is?

And William is upset because he is more like his father than he wants anyone to know.

      • Lizzie says:

Thank you Maria, I forgot about the silence from the rf when then chimpanzee pic was in the tabloids. In one episode Charles whines ‘ what does it take to get a little sympathy in this family?’ They are all spoiled brats.
I have to say that in the episode the queen tells Charles that he and Diana were somehow fortunate enough to be given every advantage in life and no one will have sympathy for them. I don’t know if she said it in real life but I wanted to shout Amen.

    • A says:

@Beck, they don’t have to like it. But they can also not watch it. And the show has exploited tons of royal family drama for views before. No one had any issues with it happening when it was focused on the Queen for the first three seasons, and there was so much there that was objectionable in those portrayals too. There was a whole bit in season 2 where the Queen, as a younger version of herself, fretted about being Queen, and wanted her sister to do it. That was a wholesale made up situation, but where was the outrage about that?

And again, in season two, the way they showcased Philip’s childhood–all of that was garbage. I felt really bad for the man. Who wants to see a version of the most painful, most tragic events of their life, on camera, and not only that, one that was replete with inaccuracies, and guesswork, and embellished for added drama? I couldn’t watch it, and I can’t go back and rewatch some of that now, because it was just too sad. But where was the outrage about that?

Why would Harry and William be okay with the way they showed Philip, or Margaret, or anyone else in the royal family, but suddenly be prickly about the portrayal of Diana, even though they knew this is how she would have been portrayed? They knew the show would have 6 seasons. They knew when season 1 came out, and everyone, including multiple members of the royal family, RAVED about it, on and on, about how good it was, etc. They knew the show would eventually talk about Diana. They know how the show approaches these stories, how it portrays people, how it tells the narrative. Knowing all this, to protest NOW, is just beyond stupid. This did not come out of nowhere for any of them, but they act like they were betrayed and stabbed in the back, when the truth is, they like it when it suits them, don’t like it when it doesn’t, and think no one should call them on their double standards.

If Harry, William, or Charles, don’t like this season, and find it exploitative or whatever, I’m sorry to say this, but they should have opened their gob back in season 1, and spoken up about how its an exploitative portrayal of the royal family back then. They should have anticipated what it would become, because none of it was classified. But they’re okay with certain exploitative portrayals, but not others? You can’t have it both ways lads.

  35. NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

If the royals are so offended, perhaps they should speak up and tell us what truly occurred instead of forcing propaganda revisionist history on everyone? Regardless of what was said, the royals should be grateful this isn’t far worse. Quite honestly, I see The Crown was being kind in how they portrayed Charles and Diana, moreso Diana since she isn’t here to defend herself.

There is so much worse that people could be reminded of when it came to how they treated her. The royals just don’t like it when this is brought up and people are reminded of how awful every single one of them were to her. I hope the courtiers ignore George and don’t require him to marry until he is actually ready to do so but that would require everyone to learn from their lessons.

  36. NYStateofMind says:

I think it’s fair to say that the show is, for the most part, pretty accurate. I understand not wanting to re-live it but it’s a series about their lives. Other than not watching, there’s no other way around it. If the family looks bad in certain parts that is just something they will have to sort out. It’s not as if none of it occurred. Sorry William, change the channel.

  37. Maria says:

I feel bad that I am absolutely CACKLING at how this 10 hours of television is erasing all the work of almost two decades Charles has been trying.

  38. A says:

“In this case, it’s dragging up things that happened during very difficult times 25 or 30 years ago without a thought for anyone’s feelings.”

The presumption here about the audience and their ability to have a working long-term memory is just beyond insulting. Do they think that everyone out here doesn’t have eyes and ears? Do they think we don’t know how delighted these fucking idiots were when The Crown first came out? How everyone was on the case of whether the Queen had watched it or not? What she thought of it? How everyone approved??

And these people knew, from the very fucking start, that this show would have six whole seasons. None of this information was kept from them either. They knew it would eventually get to a point where it would talk about the Charles and Diana marriage. So what’s with all the fucking outrage here?

As for Prince William–Matt Smith spoke, in an interview, about how he met Prince William at the line-up at polo one time, and the person introducing them mentioned how Matt Smith was going to be portraying Prince Philip on The Crown, and whether Prince William had any advice for him. William, apparently, leaned in and said, “Legend. He’s an absolute legend.”

So you mean to tell me, that THAT guy, who apparently saw no issue with dispensing trite advice to an actor on how to portray his grandfather, is now suddenly pissy about a show that he KNEW would have six seasons, and eventually cover his own parents’ marriage? REALLY?

Like, these people really think we’re all fucking idiots, don’t they? They think we’re dumb. Because I can’t possibly imagine how they’d put this shit out without any consideration for the fact that people a) have eyes, b) can READ, and c) have working long term memories. You have to be a peculiar brand of fucking dumbass to think the public memory is that short or that faulty.

  39. Le4Frimaire says:

The creators of the Crown have a good podcast out, where they talk to researchers, Peter Morgan, cast members etc. It’s very interesting and informative and explains how the sausage is made. The work these people out into the series is not a hatchet job and they themselves say they fictionalize or dramatize certain things. It’s television. As for Harry, he has nothing to do with it and the fact they can’t see the irony of them continuing to attack him the way they attacked his parents in the tabloids is just pathetic. They can’t stand the fact they can’t directly implicate him in this. The show may be shown on Netflix but it is a100%?British production, shot mostly in UK, with majority UK cast and crew. Interesting how he has not once said one thing against the actual show runners and creators behind the series, who actually lived in Britain. Piers could probably head to their house right now if he really wanted to have it out with the actual people behind the show. But it’s easier to go after Diana’s youngest son who lives in California, who was a baby while this all took place ,because he won’t subject his own family to soul crushing abuse in the name of “ duty “.

  40. Anya says:

Wow I just watched episode 7 and for me, that has been the most damning one yet – they really laid out there how tenuous the entire concept of hereditary monarchy is and the almost unbelievably cruel lengths the Windsors have gone to maintain it – even in some ways more than the Diana episodes. And wow when Princess Margaret’s Catholic friend asks why not leave, it felt like a huge endorsement of H and M!

  41. Alyse says:

I wouldn’t blame either son for being upset about it… surely they don’t want to relive or be reminded of their parents horrible history?

I’m quite sad watching it, with no particular attachment to the idea of the Royal family – it is super emotional knowing where it all leads.

The casting in this show is incredible though – Emma Corrin is KILLING IT

  42. Sass says:

These fools have ruined the word incandescent for me.
