Lady Gaga did bags of cocaine & listened to The Cure

As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t really have a problem with Lady Gaga. I don’t think she’s as original or as groundbreaking as she thinks she is, but generally speaking, she seems pretty harmless. But one thing I do find funny is how everyone basically goes along with the idea that she’s “23 years old”. Really? I mean, she honestly might be 23, if she’s lived a really, really, rough life, but the girl looks like mid to late thirties to me. Now Lady Gaga is opening up about her rough life, though – and we may have an answer for why she looks older than the Grande Dame of Gristle herself, Madonna.

According to Gaga, she “did bags and bags of cocaine” back in the day (“the day” = 2005). Gaga says that all she would so is sit around doing coke and listening to The Cure. It sounds a lot like me when I was thirteen, minus the endless coke supply. Put in “bags and bags of chips” and that was my teenage experience circa 1992:

Lady GaGa has revealed her tough no-nonsense father save her from drug addiction. GaGa admitted spending long periods snorting cocaine alone in her cramped New York apartment, playing music by The Cure.

The Poker Face singer was giving a frank account of her abuse of the Class A drug – and admitted she thought she was going to die – before she became famous.

GaGa, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, said: ‘My father is a really powerful man, a telecom guy. So he looked at me one day and said, “You’re f***in’ up, kid.” And I looked at him and thought, “How does he know that I’m high right now?”

‘And he never said a word about the drugs, not one word. But he said, “I just wanna tell you that anyone you meet while you’re like this, and any friend that you make in the future while you are with this thing, you will lose.” And we never talked about it again.’

The 23-year-old began taking cocaine regularly in 2005 after dropping out of a music course at New York University to find fame.

“My cocaine soundtrack was The Cure. I loved all their music, but I listened to this one song on repeat while I did bags and bags of cocaine.’

She said: ‘I didn’t think there was anything wrong with me until my friends came over and said, ‘Are you doing this alone?’ “Um, yes. Me and my mirror”.’

‘But I was able to stop, because I was panicking more on the drugs than I was sober. So I’m fine now.’

However she admitted that she still likes to ‘party’. She told a US website ShockHound: ‘I can drink, and I’m not gonna say that I don’t party. But it’s not everyday, and it’s no longer a tool for my creativity.’

‘The label gets mad at me for talking about it – they say, “We don’t want people to think that you’re not a pop star.” But I am a pop star. I’m a pop star with a story!’

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine earlier this year, GaGa also said she used drugs to drive the inspiration for her futuristic hair and make-up.

She said: ‘It was quite sick. I suppose that’s where the vanity of the album [The Fame] came from.’

After her confession, GaGa was in good spirits last night when she appeared in a wacky outfit at a party hosted by Dr Dre in Berlin. She wore a latex dress, mask and a Marilyn Monroe wig.

[From the Daily Mail]

Sigh, I miss The Cure. Oh, look an official fan site! The last update was in May, though, when Robert Smith was hosting a two-hour show on Sirius. Damn. That would have been good. Oh, look, an epic entry in Wikipedia! Who would have thought The Cure would have such geeky, anal retentive fans? Oh, right. Robert Smith is God of the Goth Nerds. Whatever happened to my copy of Disintegration?

Anyhoodle, does anyone think Lady Gaga’s story is little strange? Strange, as in, I don’t really buy it. How did she afford “bags and bags” of cocaine? Why did she just do lines and listen to The Cure? Didn’t she have the energy to get up and do something else? Oh, well. We’re not going to figure this out today. Better to just spend a few hours watching old Cure videos. Hey, remember when the Cure-heads thought Robert Smith sold out with “Love Song”? It’s still a great song, by the way.

Here’s Lady Gaga at the Monster Cable party at Tube Station nightclub Berlin last night. Images thanks to WENN.com .

“Friday” is still one of my top 3 songs of all time.

  2. gg says:

The messy wig and the plastic cape were more baad ideas, Gags. But I adore the tulle dress in the header photo. She really needs a little help in the styling department, but I still like her.

  3. HEB says:

Yeah my #1 question about this is–how did she afford it?

  4. Dee says:

Just Like Heaven, The Forest… Ahh The Cure!!

  5. hatsumomo says:

    (smirk) Who didnt?

  6. Annicka says:

I don’t believe it because it’s Lady GaGa. I think the hardest stuff she’s ever done is a cigarette and a shot.

    She’s an idiot.

  7. ! says:

omg you guys she’s like sooo edgy.

  8. Livia says:

I’m still waiting for her to do something transgressive and original. Waiting, and waiting… [::falls asleep::]

  9. mollination says:

Wait – you’re not a pop-star if you do coke? I don’t even get what she’s driving at there.

I hate when people talk about their story like it is some momentous moment in OUR lives. Tell us the story and we’ll decide if its worthy of making waves or not. And doing coke isn’t note-worthy.

p.s. Coke doesn’t necessarily make me want to go out and be crazy with energy like you hear about. Sometimes I just want to stay in my house and organize a junk-drawer in solitude. lol.

  10. Popcorny says:

I trust nothing said by this Gaga except that whatever she says is to market herself. I think she’s a geek and a poser looking for “street cred”.
Her dressage is not shocking or compelling really, it’s cartoonish and sillyassed.
But, if I were trying to market myself, looking as plain as she does, I too would hide under props and things to distract visually.
I swear this Gaga’s success inspired that other desperate plain-jane (Lily Allen) to misguidedly hollow out her eye sockets with unfortuate metallic blue shadow.
“bags of cocaine” … yah, you so badass … bwah ha ha haaa.

  11. Victoria says:

Hmm…You can never see her face.

  12. soulwax says:

Her age is no secret. She’s 33. She was born on March 28, 1986 and has admitted her age on BBC TV.

  13. yadira says:

Funny, I was just listening to Joy Division. Not the same as The Cure but a one of the best groups ever!

By the way, I call drama and gaga

  14. hatsumomo says:

uh soulwax, I was born in ’85 and I’m 24. Making her 23.

  15. nonok says:

you’d have to be born in ’76 to be 33.
i don’t buy her ridiculous story. everyone i know who is off cocaine now says that it leaves an emotional hole inside… no one says “oh, i’m fine now”. Like, oh, I had Mono when i was sixteen, but i’m fine now. I hate when people lie about stuff like that because it demeans everyone elses’ battles and struggles.

  16. vale says:

The Forest… mmm. Plainsong too. It always takes me so far away.
For a while during my long distance relationship, Picture of You was a friend by my side. I’m not a diehard fan, but when I think back, The Cure was a big part of my life. Great in concert too.

  17. Cinderella says:

I’ll believe 33 over 23. If she were born in 1976, that would put her in her mid-teens during the Cure’s hey-day. It makes much more sense. I don’t believe the “bags of coke” story either. She’s trying way too hard and it makes her look goofy. I’d like to see pictures of her from her teens to see if she in fact was Stefan.

  18. Lola says:

I went to school with her, and unless she was lying about her age back in grade school then she’s 23. Love her or hate her, she’s 23.

  19. gg says:

Here you go, Cinderella, age 16:

and you just cannot purchase a butt like this, nor, perhaps, would you want to:

  20. ima says:

I don’t know if she’s telling the truth about the drugs or not…frankly I guess I don’t really care. BUT she did go to a reaaly fancy prep school on the Upper East Side and her family is very wealthy so perhaps that’s how she could afford them.

  21. Vermithrax says:

    Yeah who didn’t.

    Also vile.

  22. Ana says:

    Personally, I love Lullaby.

I too thinks she tries to hard. And also noticed that you can never see her face.

  23. Aspie says:

Yeah, I was born in 1976 and am 33 so if LGG was born in 1986, that would make her, um, 23.

Also, I hope she’s doing “fine” now (whatever that means) past her coke days and isn’t lying to herself about not having an addiction when in reality she may still have one. I hope not to see a repeat of Whitney Houston in her.

  24. corinne says:

Ughhhh, stop coppying others, Gaga. A number of celebs including Madonna talked about their “wild” drug pasts (liars!). Obviously, they did it to sound cool and get attention. She should focus on making better music and not just looking cool.

  25. yadira says:

gg: that second picture was disturbing. I felt uncomfortable for her having that leotard so high up in there. ouch 🙁

  26. jaundicemachine says:

That’s a rough 23. Not as rough as, say, a Lohan, but unconvincing nevertheless.

Seriously? 23?! I sort of feel bad for the blowhard. . . she doesn’t look a day over 35.

  27. Bex says:

Love Cats and Boys Don’t Cry – the music of a youth with lots of black eye liner..

  28. gg says:

I believe the older age explains a few things about her appearance, as well. I just figured that since she wasn’t, let’s use the term “pretty” just for the sake of argument, she was just doing what girls do – play up your better assets and hide whatever else you can. Hell I do that. Course, I’m 50 and ain’t trying to be 23. lol

  29. the original kate says:

wow…she did drugs alone in her room while listening to the cure. who didn’t?

  30. pdoggity says:

this is a lie….. she’s never said anything in an interview about cocaine…

    LIES LIES LIES

  31. ilias says:

Ahh man, this is b.s… Completely agree with those who say it leaves an emotional hole… an abbyss, I’d say… Used to do plenty of coke back at college in UK, both alone and in company… That was 6 years ago… But let’s all agree here – there’s nothing better (and worse) than having 10-20 lines carefully carved on a mirror and some beautiful music playing in the background… Shit, I’m 27 and i still can’t get over it, each time i visit London – i visit my dealer =)

  32. becky says:

Who are all of YOU to be making fun of HER?
    She’s the one making millions.
Your all followers, grow up and stop being like everyone else.
    Poor YOU.
    🙂

  33. ilias says:

becky, she’s making millions – but, for example, I am the one who s got a kid and a loving wife (who doesn’t look like she s 35) and a nice house on the countryside. I got a job that I love – I own and manage a restaurant and it brings me a decent ammount of cash. And there s no way in hell I d change any of that for a “life of a popstar”… SO… POOR YOU, actually, if you think thats what ppl dream about. Noone cares about you when that cash and fame is gone…

  34. I dont really get what Lady Gaga is up to. She is super unpredictable. (maybe because that is what her name depicts?) We can all just sit down and let her entertain us. Its her life.

  35. helen says:

shes totally lying about her age! and that picture from when she was 16, looks like it was a verrrrrry long time ago!! it has that rusty old look pictures get when they start to get really old. like the ones you see of world war 2. and heres a picture of when she was younger. probably late teens (by the way her age works out), and it looks like its in the 80’s. i mean, i know people can say that that may be the theme of her photo (because she generally does try to copy madonna alot) but she looks heaps older than 23!!

and to ilias, the one bragging about her “life”, sorry to break it to you but i dont really think anyone would admire or envy your life. not every woman wants to just be a mom with stretch marks, some people actually do have legitimate aspirations. lady gaga does live in the 21st century and maybe wants to live a glamorous life with her being her number 1 priority. not a kid.

  36. Joann says:

Helen, you’re generalizations are annoying. What does the 21 century have to do with anyone having kids? Just as people who have kids aren’t better than Gaga for being mothers, she’s not better than them because she’s childless. And how dare you say that women with children don’t have aspirations. Who are you to make that declaration? Newsflash: some women can multitask. They raise kids, have a family and a successful career all at once. Perhaps you’re the one who needs a wake up call into the 21 century if you weren’t already aware of that. But I guess life is more means more with your head is up Gaga’s behind. Lofty aspirations, indeed.

  37. jfernez says:

@illias “I am the one who s got a kid and a loving wife”

And at 27, is having a family necessarily THAT brag-worthy? I wonder if all your 20-something drinking buddies agree with your enthusiasm there, LOL. Plus it can be said that simply because you stopped using coke doesn’t mean ALL the fun in your life has to go!

But to be slightly more serious, that lifestyle isn’t one you necessarily have to pursue out of college like you did, if EVER if you don’t want. It’s not for everyone and it certainly isn’t for all of today’s 20-somethings. And don’t presume there isn’t plenty of time for that fairytale situation to fall apart either. You talk like it’s 1960 or something, ignoring today’s divorce rates. As far as your wife not looking 35, well don’t hold your breath there either, since popping out kids isn’t exactly known to keep women looking younger.

All that being said, I find Gaga to be nothing more than an insignificant phony. 🙂

I mean her name-dropping of superior artists has got to stop. Do we REALLY need to hear about some barely over 21 corporate clone popstress being “inspired” by Bowie, Queen, Depeche Mode or The Cure? Sorry Gaga, but non-fans (with enough sense) aren’t suddenly going to perceive you as being more “authentic” because you namedrop better artists. Most likely, we’re going to continue seeing a cheap Madonna clone. So keep their names out of your mouth, FFS. I won’t even get into the pathetic thing about drugs. She’s been reported more recently to be boasting about enjoying X, confused little attention whore.

  38. sue says:

Ugliness before our eyes: GAGA!! Someone please get her out!!!

  39. yasar acar says:

All that being said, I find Gaga to be nothing more than an insignificant phony. thanks for post :))))

  40. Lady Gaga is so brilliant!

  41. Pete says:

I wish she could further elaborate on the cure songs that she listened to, specifically the one she played on repeat. I love the cure but I listen to their music in moderation I don’t think I could handle a cure song on repeat.

It most certainly wasn’t Friday. Lovesong. or Just Like Heaven. It was probably one of their earlier songs.

  42. moda says:

I went to school with her, and unless she was lying about her age back in grade school then she’s 23.
